This privacy policy (“Policy”) sets out how we, Joya Communications Inc. DBA Marco Polo (“Joya” or “we”), makers of the Marco Polo® video sharing app (the “Marco Polo App” or the “ App”) use and protect the personal information of individuals who use the App or visit Marco Polo websites such as www.marcopolo.me (the “Marco Polo Website”). We will collectively refer to the Marco Polo App and the Marco Polo Website as the “Service” or “Marco Polo”.

Privacy Policy

We have two basic principles when it comes to personal data:

We do not sell or use your personal information to show you third-party advertising. We only store the personal data that we need to operate our service, so that you can communicate with the people you have chosen.

This Policy applies to anyone who accesses the Service. By visiting the Website and/or using the App or Service, you acknowledge that the collection, use and disclosure of your information will be as described in this Policy.

So we are aware of the terminology we use, when we use the term “personal data” in this privacy policy we mean information that can be linked to you or could reasonably be linked to you, such as: or mobile number.

what we collect

Marco Polo is a communication service. In order to operate the Service, we may collect personally identifiable information that you voluntarily provide to us.

Basic Account Information

To create a Marco Polo account (“Account”), you provide your mobile phone number, name, email address, and optionally provide your photo, date of birth and month of birth. Only other registered Marco Polo users who:

already have your phone number in your phone’s address book,

are in a group with you, or

You invited to Marco Polo

can see your name, photo, mobile phone number, email address, birthday and/or month of birth. Note that users you have in their contacts will see you under the name they saved and not the name you gave Marco Polo. For example, your spouse will still see you as “love” when using the app if you appear that way in their phone’s address book. If you have chosen to provide them, we will record your birthday and month so that people you know will be reminded of your birthday.

Polo melds and seconds

Marco Polo is a cloud service. We may collect and store the content you create, including videos (or “polos”), photo polos, short video clips that you share with selected contacts (“seconds” or “video reactions”), and text messages. We store this personal data on our servers so that you can access your data at any time from any of your devices with the Marco Polo App, without having to rely on third-party backups or using up your phone’s storage. Our servers are located in the United States.

You can share your friends’ contact information stored on your phone with us. Marco Polo uses mobile phone numbers as a unique identifier so you can easily find and communicate with other people you know. We’ll ask your permission before syncing your contacts, and you can continue to use the app without giving it access to your contacts (although you’ll have a harder time finding people you know who also use Marco Polo ).

We do not store this contact information on our server. We only store contact information of people you invited to Marco Polo or with whom you chat on Marco Polo on our server. If you give us permission to access information about your contacts, which may include name, phone number(s), email address(es) and/or date and month of birth, we may notify you if one of your contacts changes is on Marco Polo and if one of your contacts creates a Marco Polo account.

We run an automatic algorithm on this contact information to suggest which of your contacts you want to connect with on Marco Polo. We use this information to suggest people to invite to Marco Polo, but we do not contact anyone in your phone’s contact list without your permission.

user support

If you contact Marco Polo support, any personally identifiable information you provide to us will only be used to investigate the issue and contact you regarding your query.

Additional technical information

We use third-party analytics service providers (as described in more detail below, including Google Analytics and amplitude.com) to automatically log information about you and your computer or mobile device and how you interact with the Service. For example, when you access the Service, we may uniquely identify your operating system type, browser type and language, the pages you view, time spent on a page, access times, internet protocol (IP) address, mobile device ID, mobile device serial number User ID, wireless service provider, and information about your usage and actions on the Service. Marco Polo collects this additional technical data to analyze usage trends and to give us more information about how people use the service in order to personalize and improve the user experience.

Cookies

The only cookies we use are those to operate and deliver our service on the web. We do not use cookies for profiling or advertising. The cookies we use are small text files that enable us to provide and customize our Service, thereby providing you with a better user experience. Your browser should allow you to control these cookies, including whether or not to accept them and how to remove them. You can block cookies with your web browser and continue using the service via the Marco Polo App without interruption, but certain functions on the website may be affected as cookies are required to function.

web beacons

We may log information on our Service or in our emails using digital images called web beacons. We use web beacons to manage cookies, count visits, and learn which emails are read and used by our users and which are not. We also use web beacons to determine whether you open or respond to our emails. Similar to cookies, we use web beacons to enhance your experience of our Service.

Tracking Options and California Do Not Track Disclosures. You are welcome to set your browser or operating system in such a way that this tracking is restricted or cookies are rejected. This does not change your experience in the Marco Polo App, but it may affect certain functions on the website.

Check the “Help” menu of your browser or operating system to learn how to change your tracking preferences or cookie settings. For example:

With Chrome:

Click Settings in the top right. Select “Privacy & Security” on the left. Then select your desired settings.

groups

Anyone can create or be added to a group in the app. The creator of a group automatically becomes the group admin, and by default, anyone in the group can add or remove anyone else in the group.

Group admins have the ability to create a unique group sharing link (anyone who has the unique group sharing link can join the group), make someone the group admin, duplicate the group, set the welcome message, and restrict the group as described below. One or more people can be group admins. Group admins also have the ability to delete content for all members of the group. The group admin can do this by pressing and holding a thumbnail, selecting Remove, and then selecting “Remove for me only” or “Remove for all group members”. If a group admin selects “remove for all members”, the polo will be deleted from our service.

In the group information section of the app, we provide group settings to restrict a group. When the Restrict a Group feature is enabled, only admins (not members) can edit the group name or chat tile, or add or remove members.

If the group admin leaves the group, another group admin is not automatically designated. Group admins must add another admin before leaving the group in order for there to be an admin of the group.

Sharecast

Sharecast is a feature of the App that allows a Sharecast owner to share videos or polos with Sharecast participants. Sharecast participants cannot see who the other sharecast participants are. Participants can reply to the Sharecast owner through private messages that cannot be seen by other participants.

Sharecast participants can join a sharecast either through a sharecast link shared by the sharecast owner or by receiving an invitation through the app. Anyone with the unique sharecast link can join this sharecast and access sharecast content in the app (if they have a Marco Polo account) or on our web platform. Note that if a Sharecast owner shares their link publicly, e.g. on social media, anyone with access to the link can join their sharecast or view their sharecast videos. A Sharecast owner can prevent people from accessing their Sharecast content through the link by selecting “Reset Link” in the Sharecast Link section of their Sharecast Settings. Sharecast owners can also remove participants from their sharecast.

Restrictions on saving Sharecast Polos

A sharecast owner can prevent others from saving or sharing polos shared in their sharecast by adjusting their privacy settings to restrict saving in the app. Privacy settings can be accessed and changed by:

Tap the Settings icon,

Select Privacy and

Toggle “Prevent people from saving polos I’ve sent them.”

Leaving a sharecast

A participant can leave a sharecast on the Marco Polo home screen by tapping the three dots to the right of the name of the sharecast they wish to leave and then selecting the Leave Sharecast option. The sharecast owner will not be notified when a participant leaves their sharecast, but the owner can see who is on their sharecast at any time in their sharecast settings.

Deleting a sharecast

A sharecast owner can delete a sharecast from the Marco Polo home screen by tapping the three dots to the right of the sharecast name and then selecting the Delete Sharecast option. This will delete the Sharecast content from our servers.

How do I delete someone?

How do I delete someone?

Deleting a person removes their access to all Polos in that conversation. However, the other person still has access. To remove their access to your sent polos, please see how to delete a polo.

If you want to delete someone listed under “Add friends”, Marco Polo simply displays your device’s contacts. To delete one of these, you need to delete the contact from your device and then reinstall the app so that that contact no longer appears.

Tap the three dots next to the chat tile. Tap Block/Delete Chat. Choose Delete chat

How To Delete a Video in Marco Polo

Marco Polo is basically Skype meets Chat. In other words, you send messages in video form to your friends and they reply in the same way.

But like any chat, sometimes you send a message that you’d rather not have. Marco Polo understands and allows users to delete video messages they sent through the app. So the next time you send an embarrassing polo to your crush, remember that a few simple steps can help you ring the bell.

Delete a video you sent

Step 1

Go to the conversation that contains the video or polo you want to delete.

step 2

Locate the Polo thumbnail in the list of videos below. Tap and hold this thumbnail.

step 3

Tap Delete this polo.

step 4

Tap Confirm Delete.

This will delete the polo from both sides of the conversation. In other words, you can’t see it anymore and neither can your friend.

Delete a video you received

Basically, follow the same steps as above to remove a Polo someone else sent you. The only real difference is that instead of the word “delete” you see the word “remove”. This is because you cannot completely delete a Polo sent by someone else. You can remove it on your phone but it stays on your phone.

Save a video before deleting it

You might want to delete a Polo before the recipient sees it, but you’re afraid you’ll regret it. There are ways to save these messages before deleting them. How you do it depends on whether you’re using an iPhone or an Android.

Keep in mind that you may not be able to save a Marco Polo video sent by another user if they have disabled their settings for this feature.

Android:

Android makes it easy for you with a simple “save video” option when you tap and hold a polo. Just follow the steps to delete your own polo and choose save video instead. Then go back and delete it if you still want it.

iPhone:

Apple makes it a little harder, but you can still do it. Tap and hold on your Polo just like above and do this:

Step 1

Tap Next.

step 2

Tap More.

step 3

Tap Save Video.

Note that you can only save a video that you have created yourself. You cannot save polos sent to you by others. You can also share your polos with friends or post them on social media via your iPhone using Apple’s share feature.

Delete the entire chat

Maybe you’re not just worried about a Polo. Maybe your entire video history with a certain friend is one giant cringe fest.

Step 1

Click the three vertical dots next to the chat you want to delete.

step 2

Tap Block/Delete Chat.

step 3

In the pop-up window, select Delete Chat.

This will not remove the polos for both of you. Your friend will still have access to the entire conversation. The only way to stop them from seeing polos you send is to remove them one by one.

Share who saw your video

If your motivation for reading this article is that you sent a Polo that you really don’t want the recipient to see, then act fast. Once they see it, there’s no more erasing it from their memory.

You can tell if someone has viewed the polo by opening the conversation and searching for the polo in question. If you see a small circle icon in the corner of the Polo with his profile photo inside, then he’s seen it. If not, then you still have time.

React fast!

But like any chat, sometimes you send a message that you’d rather not have. Marco Polo understands and allows users to delete video messages they sent through the app. So the next time you send an embarrassing polo to your crush, remember that a few simple steps can help you ring the bell.

What happens if I delete a Polo?

If you delete your own polo, it will disappear on your side and on the recipients’ side. However, if you delete a polo that someone sent you, that polo will only be deleted from your chat history.

How long are Marco Polo videos available?

Marco Polo videos will remain as long as the user is active and does not manually delete them as shown above. If a user is inactive for more than a year, the videos are automatically deleted. Users with a free subscription are subject to the video archive after 30 days, so your videos can be found in the archive folder. Those who pay for a subscription are not archived.

Can I recover a deleted video?

No, unless you have saved the video or it has been archived.

Can I block another user on Marco Polo?

Yes, you can block another user on Marco Polo from contacting you. If you delete another user, they will still have access to all of your messages and videos unless you delete them first.
