Revitalizing a Stuck Drive In the late 1980’s, a common problem, particularly with some Seagate drives, was what was known as “sticking”. After not spinning for a few days, the drive head stuck to the platter, preventing the hard drive from spinning up. I thought stiction was a thing of the past until I recently tried to boot up an old laptop computer that I hadn’t booted up in five years. I could tell that the hard drive in the laptop was not spinning. I had nothing to lose, so I tried my old trick of detaching drives – by vigorously rotating (shaking in an angular manner) the whole laptop. You can shake a removed hard drive much better than an entire computer, but shaking the computer was enough in this case. For PCs, it is best to remove the hard drive. Grab the hard drive as shown and shake it back and forth vigorously. The shaking should be a twisting motion rather than a back and forth motion.
