Since I was in the mood for scent, I grabbed supplies to make some DIY water bead air fresheners. Have you ever used water beads? They are tiny little balls of gel that expand in water. Many people use them to fill vases or make sensory play projects for children. Today I’m sharing an easy way to turn water beads into an air freshener!
DELIVERIES
1 TBSP. water pearls
2 glasses or mason jars
100% essential oil
Optional: leather strap and 2 small shells
STEPS
Place 1 tablespoon of water pearls in a large bowl. Fill the bowl with water and let the water beads sit and expand overnight. Once the water beads have expanded, drain the water. Fill jars with the water pearls and add your favorite essential oils. Start with 10 drops of oil and increase drops from there depending on how strong you want your jar to smell. If you want to decorate your jar, wrap a leather string around the top of the jar. crop. Using a sharp knife, carefully carve a hole in a small shell (make sure the shell is thin). Thread the bowl onto the leather cord and tie tightly around the top of the jar. Display your water pearl air fresheners in different rooms of the house!

In today’s post, I’m sharing one of my favorite ways to use essential oils without using a diffuser. This air freshener spray is easy to make, has many useful uses (which we’ll get to in a moment), and makes a great gift.
What’s in this spray?
This simple and customizable air freshener spray consists of just 3 simple elements. You can make my favorite version of this spray by following the recipe below, or choose your own unique ingredients to make your very own spray.

5 things to consider when choosing an air freshener
No, you can’t get a “real” new car smell: we all want that new car smell to last forever, so it helps to understand why new cars smell so good and why it’s difficult to replicate that particular smell. The “new car smell” actually comes from a combination of materials used inside a vehicle’s cabin. The chemicals found in the various pieces and parts like plastics and vinyl give off volatile organic compounds that create the scent that so many of us love. This also makes finding a proper air freshener difficult, but we’ll get into that below.
Cover up or eliminate an odor: Many air fresheners don’t actually act as odor eliminators, instead you may find that the scent sits on top of an already existing odor. If you have a serious car odor problem that won’t go away, it’s best to address the potential problem rather than cover it up. Then you can really enjoy a nice scent without it mixing with a bad smell.
Sprays and stationary air fresheners tend to work differently: again, this boils down to personal preference, but there tend to be gaps in performance between sprays and air fresheners left in your car at all times. Since I was in the mood for scent, I grabbed supplies to make some DIY water bead air fresheners. Have you ever used water beads? They are tiny little balls of gel that expand in water. Many people use them to fill vases or make sensory play projects for children. Today I’m sharing an easy way to turn water beads into an air freshener!
DELIVERIES
1 TBSP. water pearls
2 glasses or mason jars
100% essential oil
Optional: leather strap and 2 small shells
STEPS
Place 1 tablespoon of water pearls in a large bowl. Fill the bowl with water and let the water beads sit and expand overnight. Once the water beads have expanded, drain the water. Fill jars with the water pearls and add your favorite essential oils. Start with 10 drops of oil and increase drops from there depending on how strong you want your jar to smell. If you want to decorate your jar, wrap a leather string around the top of the jar. crop. Using a sharp knife, carefully carve a hole in a small shell (make sure the shell is thin). Thread the bowl onto the leather cord and tie tightly around the top of the jar. Display your water pearl air fresheners in different rooms of the house!
Makes 2 air fresheners.
These cans turned out great! The next morning after I made mine, my whole house smelled like a beautiful blend of patchouli and orange! Some of the essential oil will settle to the bottom of the jar. Just put the lid back on and give it a good shake every now and then to redistribute it.
The pearls will shrink over time, but you can add more water to rehydrate them. Once the water beads have absorbed water again, you can add more essential oil as well. These water pearl air fresheners are perfect for the bathroom or any room in the house that needs a little uplifting scent!

So first I got rid of all the junk and other random items that had accumulated in my car and then I looked for a way to make the inside of my freshly cleaned car interior smell good! I’ve never been a huge fan of these tree air fresheners because even though they smell great, they’re just SO POWERFUL! After a bit of searching and detective work, I came up with three different ideas for making my own car air freshener!
I haven’t narrowed down which ones I’ll use yet because I like them all! I think I’ll just flip through them every now and then just to keep it interesting.
Here’s how to make 3 different types of naturally scented air fresheners perfect for your car.
Clothespin air freshener
You need:

Place about 5 drops of your essential oil of choice on each clothespin. We used peppermint oil for its fresh and energizing scent.
Place your clothespins in a plastic sandwich bag along with a handful of fresh herbs (or not, it’s optional!) and seal the bag. We decided to add a handful of fragrant mint leaves to the pouch, which paired really well with the scent of the orange oil. The combination of orange and mint smells fresh, clean and invigorating! If you omit the herbs, use the sandwich bag to store your clothespins until you’re ready to use them.
To use your clothespin air fresheners, simply attach one or two to your car’s air vents. This is a perfect air freshener for someone who prefers something more subtle than traditional air fresheners, as the scent is only really ‘activated’ when you use the heater or air conditioning in your car.

Mason Jar Air Freshener
You need:

Pour baking soda into your mason jar until it is about 2/3 full. Add about 20 drops of your favorite essential oil or oils to the baking soda. We used equal amounts of lemon, lavender, and peppermint essential oils.
Place the lid on the jar and shake well to distribute the oils throughout the baking soda.
Next, remove the lid and using the flat disk part as a template, draw a circle on a piece of cardboard. Cut out the circle with scissors or a sharp craft knife and place it on the jar of baking soda.
Use the ring portion of the lid to attach the cardboard to the jar, then use the thumbtack to poke several holes in the cardboard lid. All done!
To use, place the glass in a cup holder in your car or tuck it under a seat. Make a fresh glass about once a month.
Felt & Foam Air Freshener
You need:

First you need to decide what shape you want your air freshener to be. We made a few different fun shapes – a sunbeam, a seashell and a flip flop! (If you need inspiration, there are pages upon pages of fun designs at the Silhouette Design Store!)
Once you have decided which design you will use, cut out your design twice; once with the adhesive craft foam and once with the craft felt. We were able to cut out both with our Silhouette Curio. (We referenced this tutorial by Sarah Hearts to learn how to cut felt with our Curio!)
When both shapes are cut out, peel the paper backing from the craft foam and glue it to the back of the felt piece.
Use a piece of yarn or string to make a loop at the top to hang it from.
The final step is to add your scent! You can either just put a few drops of essential oils directly onto the felt side or use a small spray bottle like we did. Spraying on the essential oils mixed with water will give you a more even distribution of the oils.
When you’re done, all you have to do is hang your new air freshener on your rearview mirror!
