How Can You Keep In Step With The Holy Spirit? The 135 Top Answers

Most of us will not come to the fair on Pentecost Sunday this year as our access is still somewhat restricted. We got used to that and found ways to celebrate at home in the local church.

It’s gonna be kind of crap.

However, the Holy Spirit is undeterred. St. Augustine wrote that Pentecost occurs over and over again. So the Holy Spirit always blows through! We just have to be attentive and open.

How can we open our hearts to “the Lord, the giver of life” (Nicaea Creed) so that we may receive what He desires to give and act on what He inspires in us? How can we make our participation in Pentecost particularly meaningful this year?

For tips, I called some charismatic Catholics I know (all St. Mary’s alumni) to see if they could help us. I admire the spiritual courage, openness and freedom they have. There’s something cool going on; a living faith, a living relationship with the Holy Spirit that makes me smile.

As I read, pondered and spoke about it, I realized that Catholic Charismatic Renewal is not a movement (although it is) but, as I have heard over and over again, “a stream of grace” and renewal in the Church, accessible for the whole family of God.

What is renewal in spirit? My friend Nan Prikryl calls it a “renewal of love”. She says it’s a graceful clarity of vision, a renewed love for God, a “nudge of the Spirit to love men.”

She describes beautiful experiences in prayer that changed her life. These weren’t particularly wild. These were times when she felt like she was being held close by Father, times when she was given a new understanding, a deep peace, she felt lifted and in communion with others as she sang. Love flooded her and made her cry tears of joy. She says the Holy Spirit “is tenderness and love,” and that is how its touch is known.

She says spiritual renewal is a renewed love for God, being open to what God wants us to see, receiving a deeper spiritual understanding of a scripture, a touch of creativity, an insight that helps to heal or even oneself to heal.

Nan explained that as human beings we sometimes need to feel loved by God in ways that we can feel physically or emotionally. Some have a feeling of inner warmth, a burning heart or burning hands, or an inner release that pushes them to overcome words and pray like a little child. Nan mentioned a sense of the sacred that moves her to sing in an inspired way, kick off her shoes, and pray prostrate. It is important to be in a safe, loving environment where the way you pray is okay.

She says this renewal makes us ever more radiant and inspired in our faith. “There should be something wonderfully attractive about our relationship with God, conveying love and joy, a sure sign of his presence.”

I know Nan well and that definitely describes her.

Kristy Kranly spoke about the Holy Spirit “giving a word” illuminating the Scriptures, guiding us and giving us new life, setting us free. Our minds are sometimes so busy that the Spirit steps in to shut off the mental chatter so our spirit can communicate with God’s Spirit in ways that are beyond the reach of the mind. At other times there is a gentle realization of God within us, or a new direction becomes clear. Maybe we have an inspiration to say a word to someone else.

Kristy said renewal of the Spirit is “awakening to a new sensitivity to God in and around you.” It doesn’t have to be extraordinary. She says, “Just because you behave differently than you expect charismatics to behave, doesn’t mean you aren’t filled to the brim with the Spirit.” God gives what he wants to anyone who opens up to him.

We can expect the gifts and fruits of the Spirit to unfold in our lives as we welcome Him into our souls and unwrap the graces bestowed upon us in the Sacrament of Confirmation. You know these: the gifts of “wisdom, understanding, counsel, strength, knowledge, and the fear of the Lord” (Isaiah 11:2); and godliness and the fruits “love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” (See Gal. 5:22-23)

According to Kristy, the first thing we should do is “raise our expectations” to prepare for renewal in the Spirit. Expect the Holy Spirit! We should prepare for everything to happen because the Holy Spirit is a creative genius.

I laughed because in my experience when I pray to the Holy Spirit I need to prepare myself because the world can be turned upside down. I told her that sometimes at Christmas I like to leave the door open for Jesus to come and that maybe I could do the same for the Holy Spirit. She called this a “sacramental act” in which we do something symbolic to bring a spiritual reality alive for us personally; like saying to God, “Let this be that.”

These things can add to our receptivity to the Holy Spirit, especially at Pentecost when most of us will be at home.

She suggested that listening to other people’s testimonies about spiritual renewal can increase our desire for what is key. God loves to grant that wish. “Come Holy Spirit,” we pray.

Then we can pray with Mary: “Let the word that you have given be fulfilled in me.” (Luke 1:38b NIV)

Kristy spoke about how charismatic prayer services often begin with music of praise and worship that encourages us to lay down our burdens and fully enter sacred space. Then the music and prayers will move from joyful praise to more intimate, quiet worship music that helps us get closer to the heart. The idea then is to slip into stillness together and within ourselves with God. Try this at home!

I also spoke to Molly (Millroy) Goldfine who said when she traveled with NET Ministries (a ministry that offers retreats for Catholic youth) the style of worship and prayer was absolutely charismatic. The preachers regularly prayed for one another, putting their hands on each other’s shoulders (of course always asking if the other was comfortable). These times were inspiring and fruitful for everyone involved.

I have experienced how much human touch can deepen the conscious contact with God when prayed for me or prayed for someone else.

I realized that I experienced the deep inner healing of the Holy Spirit over and over again. I have seen a deep connection and renewed spiritual flowering among my friends as we prayed together. Maybe I know a little bit about it. Maybe you do too.

Molly says what she associates most with Pentecost is finding the courage to go forth in love and service. The disciples hid in the Upper Room with an overwhelming task ahead of them, still frightened by the authorities, not sure what to do now that Jesus had ascended. Then, as promised, the Holy Spirit came mightily, enlightened them, the gift of tongues allowed them to carry God’s message to all. They suddenly had the courage to leave this certainty and do the extraordinary with bold trust. For Molly, this is the ultimate gift of Pentecost, the renewal, this courage to speak, to serve, to love like Jesus.

So perhaps we can prepare the way for the Spirit to come and renew us as we lay down our burdens and let go of whatever is holding us back. Why not forgive everyone and ask for forgiveness too? Why not let go of things we already know we need to do?

Clean up the deck! Expect miracles, get ready for change!

Perhaps this year we can pray for one another as families at home, inviting the Holy Spirit to truly renew, encourage, strengthen, heal and inspire us now.

Design your own little prayer service. If you have some of those Holy Land olive oils or even fragrant (and safe) essential oils around the house, use them. Anointing one another’s head, hands and feet with a prayer. We make this at my house and we love it. Lighting candles, burning incense sticks, throwing rose petals, reading the scriptures. Sing songs of the Holy Ghost, give each other words of encouragement or verses from the Bible that you feel compelled to share with them. Invite the Holy Spirit, “Fountain of grace…fire of love…sweet anointing from above” (Veni Creator Spiritus) to come among you. And are you serious?

Oh, and leave the door open.

One of the most used passages in Bible studies is Proverbs 16:9.

Why ? what is its meaning How important is it?

In ancient times, some of the knowledge of Israel was passed down through several generations as sayings and folk sayings. The only writings were the books of the law attributed to Moses.

Only at the time of David do the first scribes appear and record the events of Israel’s history 🇮🇱.

1) Who wrote Proverbs 16:9?

According to tradition and the book’s introduction (Proverbs 1:1), Jews and Christians ascribe it to Solomon, who is said to have received so much wisdom (1 Kings 4:30-32) that he became many centuries later proverbial in Israel.

It is now assumed that King Solomon wrote between the first half and three quarters of the book of Proverbs ✏️.

The rest of the book, as well as chapters 30 and 31, are attributed to other authors after the Solomon period.

There are even people who believe that Solomon actually collects the Proverbs, although this has not been proven.

a. Proverbs 16:9 KJV

The version reads:

“The heart of man devised his way; but the LORD directs his steps.”

The King James Bible takes its name from King James I of England who protected a group of Catholic Inquisition scholars to translate the Bible from Latin to English 🇬🇧.

It was published in 1611 and is considered the reference for modern English-language Bibles. It was written from the Greek and Hebrew manuscripts and other translations of the time were used to write it, such as the Queen Valera Bible.

b. Proverbs 16:9 New international version

The new version says:

“In their hearts they plan their way, but the Lord directs their steps”.

The New International Version was born by a group of scholars who wanted to translate Biblical manuscripts into modern English, with several revisions and better writing than the King James Bible.

The New International Version was first published in 1973. The entire Bible was subsequently available in 1979.

3) “A man’s heart has devised his way” meaning

To explain Proverbs 16:9, let’s break it down sentence by sentence:

For many, man is the only one who determines his future and his path 🔮.

We often think that there are multiple paths, that we have a multitude of options, and that each of them is good for what we want (Job 23:13).

We live in a society that asks you to walk your own path and take control of your life.

They reduce it to streamlining life like a calculator. It’s not all evil: We were created in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:26).

This means that we can think and plan our way 🙂.

We own our choices, for each of them has been received into our hearts as a desire (1 Corinthians 2:11) from which our life flows (Proverbs 4:23).

Some are obsessed with planning their lives (James 4:13) down to the last detail, while others don’t give it that much importance and leave it to “luck” 🍀.

We get angry when our plans go wrong (Matthew 6:21) and rejoice when unforeseen events come our way.

The evil is that because our hearts are deceitful (Jeremiah 17:9), we can turn to sin and follow evil ways if we don’t think well of what we want 😈.

The heart always justifies what we desire (Proverbs 27:19), and when evil it tends the Persian mind to think that our desires, however evil, may be right.

Thus the mind becomes a factory assimilating the evil desires of the heart.

4) “but the Lord directed his steps” meaning

Reducing my life to a calculator ignores the sovereignty of God, who has the final say (Jeremiah 29:11).

No matter how much we plan or do, see the present chaos, or strive to change something, in the end God’s will will prevail (Isaiah 46:10).

It is God who sustains our souls and weighs our hearts (Proverbs 21:2). We can plan, but it is God who directs our steps 👣 (Jeremiah 10:23).

If the plan is not in accordance with God’s will, we do not expect it to be fulfilled (Psalm 135:6). We can find our way under the guidance of the heart, even if it is bad.

But no one can escape God’s sovereignty or take a different path than God has prepared (Daniel 4:35).

Here is the contrast between what we plan and what happens: It is God who decides whether it will be done or not (Isaiah 43:13).

He exercises His own power (Job 42:2) to permit, annul, or facilitate our ways.

I’ll sum it up in one sentence: Man proposes and God decrees (Proverbs 19:21).

5) Proverbs 16:9 The message behind the verse

Even if man has many plans, right or wrong, in the end the will of God stands.

Many times we blame ourselves for the things we have done or given up, we are at a crossroads where we need wisdom or advice to make a good decision, but we don’t think about whether the result achieved is with can be reconciled with the will of God, who guides you life and way 🧭.

Instead of living stressed out or judging ourselves by having to make a decision, let’s open our hearts to Christ, entrust our way to him and wait for his answer, because he will know how to lead us 🙏🏻 (Romans 8 :28) .

Let the Lord guide your steps, for your ability to make decisions, no matter how good, are not always aligned with the will of God. Don’t let us lose our strength, trust in the Lord and He will know how to lead us on the way (Jeremiah 29:11). The key is to trust the Lord completely ❤️(Proverbs 3:5-6).

It’s a common assumption among humans that if you want to be someone, you have to find something to achieve. Most people do this by looking around the world to see who and what others admire most, and then setting their hearts on becoming or achieving that. The hope is that once they get that victory, they will be somebody, be happy, or even deserve some kind of redemption.

Even those who don’t have the self-discipline and drive to pursue their dreams spend their time wishing and dreaming, even if it takes the form of condemning their failures.

That’s the way of the world. It will result in either achieving the goals and being left with pride, or worse, emptiness when you realize the goal wasn’t worthy. Alternatively, it leads to failure and judgment, dejection and self-pity. Understanding that the Lord determines His steps will release a person from this cycle. Seek first the kingdom of God, and the Lord, who establishes your steps, will add everything to you.

In most places where the heart is mentioned in Scripture, it is not looked upon kindly. Jeremiah said: “The heart is above all deceitful and incurable. Who can understand it” (Jer 17:9)? Mark 7:21-22 says, “For from within, out of a man’s heart, come evil thoughts—sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, fornication, envy, slander, arrogance, and folly.” Simple following your heart might work for Disney, but it’s terrible advice for the believer.

#2 “…People plan their course”

It is right to plan to a certain extent; What’s for dinner tonight? When will I finish my work? But the kind of planning that isn’t good is the arrogant kind that wants its own way and has expectations of how things are going to go. This essentially takes on the role of God. James 4:13-17 calls it boasting about the morning.

#3 “but the Lord directs her steps.”

What will happen is what God wants. Seek the kingdom of God and His righteousness (Mt 6:25-34), don’t worry about tomorrow, live in His presence now and watch as He unfolds His perfect plan before you. That is, live by His standards in His Word and lay down your life for Him and for His kingdom. You can’t even imagine what he has in store for those who trust him.

Living our life with God in it makes things easier and gives us hope. We may not know it, but walking with God is so much better than walking without Him, and here’s why.

1. Walking with God makes things possible

The Lord never said that our life here on earth would be easy. We’re going to have tough times and we’re going to have our struggles. But our time here on earth will be worth it. We are here to share God’s love and light with others and spread the good news that He is our Savior. Walking with God may not make things easy, but it makes them possible. Walking with him gives us the assurance of his presence and power in our lives. Our God is powerful and with him all things are possible. We can endure trials and heartaches. Because of the resurrection power of Christ within us, we can overcome.

“I also will walk among you and be your God, and you shall be my people” – Leviticus 26:12

2. He is our comfort

The Lord always walks by your side. He goes through every situation with you. He loves and cares for you and will always be by your side. As you walk with Him, you will feel comfortable knowing that He is always there for you. He’s always with you when you need someone to lean on and a shoulder to cry on; He is always there with open arms.

“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no harm, for you are with me; your staff and your staff comfort me.” – Psalm 23:4

3. He will help you

No matter what you’re going through, God will help you. You can always call him for help. If you are frustrated and angry, give him a call. When you get upset and feel like you can’t go on anymore, yell at him. He will always be there to pick you up and push you forward.

“For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just like us – and yet he has not sinned. Then let us approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”—Hebrews 4:15-16

4. Going without him is an unnecessary struggle

If we don’t walk with God, we will struggle even more because we are completely on our own. We have to figure things out for ourselves and it’s going to be a lot harder than it should be. God is the light on our way. He will show us the way, but without him we must find our way through the darkness. Why fight when God can guide you?

“When Jesus spoke to the people again, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” – John 8:12
