Android VPN Options

VPNs allow devices that are not physically on a network to securely access the network.

Android includes a built-in VPN client (PPTP, L2TP/IPSec and IPSec). Android 4.0+ devices also support VPN apps. You may need a VPN app (rather than a built-in VPN) for the following reasons:

EMM config

You can configure many VPNs with an EMM console – make sure your VPN and EMM combination supports it. Using an EMM means that device users do not have to change complex settings. EMMs often support the following configuration:

Disable VPN system settings so someone using the device cannot change the configuration.

Configure VPN network connection settings, including installing authentication certificates.

Adding a list of apps that are allowed to use the VPN or a list of apps that can’t use the VPN.

Always-on VPN

Android can start a VPN service when the device boots up and keep it running while the device or work profile is on. This feature is called Always-On VPN and is available in Android 7.0 or higher. For more information, see Edit always-on VPN settings.

Block non-VPN connections Many EMM consoles (and the Android Settings app) allow you to block non-VPN connections. If you also enable Block non-VPN connections, only apps on the allow list will have access to the network.

Disallowed Apps You can choose which apps you don’t want to use the VPN by creating a list of disallowed apps. Network traffic from disallowed apps uses the system network as if the VPN weren’t running – all other apps use the VPN. If you also enable Block non-VPN connections, those unauthorized apps will lose network access.

If your EMM supports it, you can prevent device users from changing system VPN settings. On some versions of Android, this limitation prevents an always-on VPN from starting:

There are various methods and apps to keep some content on your phone more secure than the others, and on the Galaxy S6 Samsung has a built-in option called Privacy Mode. With a tap of a quick settings toggle and authentication, you can unlock data from a variety of Samsung apps that you’ve previously marked as private and keep them away from anyone who happens to have your phone. It’s not comprehensive and doesn’t cover all needs, but it’s worth knowing for casual use.

Understand and enable private mode

You can access privacy mode from your main phone settings, under Personal -> Privacy & security -> Privacy mode, or simply from the quick settings dropdown menu by long pressing the privacy mode button. Once you’re there, it’s a simple setup process where you turn it on and then choose an authentication method – pattern, PIN, password or fingerprints. These are the same methods available for locking your entire device, but private mode is a separate authentication and for that reason you should consider using a different PIN or password than your lock screen. If you opt for a pattern, you’ll need to provide a backup PIN, and if you opt for fingerprints, it can access your previously saved fingerprints.

Private Mode was designed to allow you to hide specific files in a handful of Samsung apps so that they are no longer visible when you are not in Private Mode. It works in Gallery, Video, Music, Dictaphone, My Files and Internet apps. For example, you can turn on privacy mode, go to gallery, and select some photos to hide – those photos will only appear in gallery if you’ve authenticated and entered privacy mode, and otherwise no trace will be seen.

This is really designed as a “for your eyes only” system and not one that hides the app’s content from the filesystem – for a true sandbox setup you’ll need something more like My Knox (opens in new tab). . Using private mode

Once you’ve set up privacy mode, it’s probably a good idea to move it to the top 10 options in the quick settings order so that it can be activated with just a tap. To turn it on, just tap the quick settings button and enter your PIN, password, pattern, or fingerprint. You’ll notice a small privacy mode icon in the status bar next to your network icons.

When private mode is on, you can use your phone as usual and have access to all your files – no apps should misbehave or restrict access. If you want to hide items so that they are not visible when exiting private mode, just go to any of the apps above, select the items you want to hide, tap the “More” button in the app and choose the new ones from the “Move to private” option. Anything you’ve selected will display a new Privacy Mode icon, indicating that it will disappear once you exit Privacy Mode.

You can set Privacy Mode to turn off automatically when you turn off the screen, or you can turn it off manually by tapping the Privacy Mode icon in Quick Settings again. When you exit private mode, there’s no indication that content is hidden in these apps – it just doesn’t show up.

An imperfect system, but it works

Private mode is hardly a substitute for a more complete system that hides entire apps and restricts access to their data with a proper sandbox, and when in doubt, it’s always best to secure your entire phone with a passcode and leave it to no one .
