How Much Taco Meat Per Person (Recipe For A Party)

Tacos are one of our favorite Mexican dishes as they bring a delicious blend of flavor and texture from traditional Mexican cuisine. However, since several fast food restaurants offer tacos on their menu, it’s easy to assume it’s junk food. However, we should remember that tacos can be a healthy meal as long as they are prepared properly. Being aware of what meat we’re using, how it’s prepared, and what ingredients we’re choosing allows us to enjoy healthy and tasty tacos. Otherwise, we may end up eating junk food, which, as we know, can have a very negative effect on our health. Here’s everything you need to know about how tacos can be healthy food.

Tacos can be healthy food and junk food

According to several nutritionists and health experts, tacos can be considered both a healthy food and junk food. This depends a lot on the ingredients used in our taco dish as well as how we prepare the tacos. An example of this is tacos sold in fast food restaurants. When our tacos are fried with lots of oil and overcooked with too much salt, spices, cheese and sauce with no veggies, they’re undeniably junk food.

On the other hand, if we eat tacos that are closer to the original Mexican recipe, namely tacos with thin slices of meat, salsa, onion, guacamole, and lime, we get healthy tacos. That’s because they’re typically low-fat, plus they offer a balanced mix of meat and veggies, all in a corn tortilla that’s also healthier than deep-fried hard taco shells.

Healthy and unhealthy ingredients for tacos

Of course, one of the most important ingredients in tacos is the protein that you add. You can opt for lean protein like that found in beef, chicken, and fish. You can also choose a vegan protein like tofu and beans. These protein ingredients are far healthier than, say, high-fat beef.

When it comes to tortillas, we should look for whole wheat taco shells as they are healthier than flour tortillas. As you can see, tacos can be a healthy meal if we are careful about the ingredients we use.

Vegetables are another key ingredient in tacos, and adding lettuce and tomatoes are pretty healthy choices. Salsas and guacamole are healthy topping options to consider as well, and skipping other toppings like cheese or sour cream helps us enjoy delicious and healthy tacos.

Ways to make tacos healthier

Tacos can be healthy food or junk food depending on how we prepare them. That’s why we need to make sure we’re using ingredients that not only add flavor to the mix, but are also part of a healthy diet. To make our tacos healthier, consider using lean protein meats like beef, chicken, and fish, or vegan protein like tofu and beans.

Whole wheat tortillas are healthier and tastier than flour tortillas or fried taco shells, so maybe we should stick with the former. Salsas and veggie toppings instead of sour cream or cheese are also excellent choices. The closer we get to traditional taco recipes, the healthier and tastier our tacos turn out to be.

Are tacos healthier than burgers?

While it may look healthy, if it comes smothered in mayonnaise or some other sauce, the hamburger isn’t as good for you as a taco. However, prepare a taco with the same lean meat and you’re going to come out with less fat and fewer calories.

How Much Taco Meat Per Person (Recipe For A Party)

It can not be denied. Americans love hamburgers and tacos. Like a lot. So much so that you could almost rephrase the old adage “American like apple pie” to “American like hamburgers and tacos” without ever missing a beat.

In fact, HuffingtonPost.com reported in July 2013 (from information collected by PBS.org in 2012) that Americans eat nearly 50 billion (yes, BILLION) hamburgers a year. That’s about three hamburgers for every person in the US. Single. Week.

According to website NationalTacoDay.com (which falls on October 4 this year), Americans ate 4.5 billion tacos in 2013. While that’s a little less than 10 percent of the burgers eaten, it’s still an amazing number of tacos and nothing to sneeze at. In fact, NationalTacoDay.com says 4.5 billion tacos weighs about 775 million pounds, the weight of two Empire State Buildings!

So here’s what we know so far: Americans typically eat more hamburgers than tacos each year. But that begs the question: which is better for you, a hamburger or a taco?

The speedometer! Final answer.

But it doesn’t take a nutritionist to understand why tacos are definitely healthier than hamburgers. Let’s start with the fact that hamburgers very often come slathered with mayonnaise, or “secret” sauce, on their high-carb bun. Not only does this add a significant amount of fat and calories, remember these are just the first two ingredients. Also, let’s not hide the fact that even if you make a hamburger with a lean beef patty, you’re still going to be higher in fat and calories than a taco.

It may look healthy, but if smothered in mayonnaise or some other sauce, the hamburger won’t do you as good as a taco.

However, make a taco with the same lean meat and you’ll come out with less fat and fewer calories. That is until you baste the whole thing in melted cheese and call it a day.

Of course, you can also skip the meat altogether and load up your corn tortillas with treasures from the garden or the sea. Fish tacos, for example, are packed with heart-healthy omega-3s and pair perfectly with a bold pico or a delicious mango salsa.

Speaking of pico, while you’re probably used to toppings like chopped lettuce and tomato, you can also choose to keep it fresh with a big helping of pico de gallo (aka salsa fresca). The combination of chopped tomatoes, white onions, lime juice, chopped cucumbers, radish, and even mango boosts veggie intake and helps make your taco a truly healthy meal. Wrap it all in a soft tortilla (which has far fewer trans fats than a hard taco fried in hot oil) and you have a very vegetarian lunch or dinner!

Throw in a side of black beans and you’ve got all the major food groups covered on one plate!

For a nutritious and delicious taco, visit your local Mattito restaurant—and don’t forget happy hour.

Which tacos are the healthiest?

If you’re looking for a healthy taco option, we recommend getting lean chicken tacos or seafood tacos. These protein options have less fat than red meats, but they’re packed with protein. Fish and shrimp also have vital nutrients, such as vitamin D and omega 3 fatty acids.

How Much Taco Meat Per Person (Recipe For A Party)

Tacos get a bad rap. They are often portrayed in the media as greasy, fried junk food. You may be wondering how something that tastes so good can be so bad for you? Well we are here with some good news. Tacos aren’t as unhealthy as they’ve been made out to be in recent years! Not all tacos are created equal, and the fast-food chain’s tacos that were introduced to mainstream America definitely don’t represent authentic Mexican cuisine. At Taqueros Mexican Restaurant, our tacos are made with real meat, fresh vegetables, and homemade tortillas. Tacos can be healthy, and here’s why:

the filling

There are countless fillings you can get for your tacos: barbacoa, carnitas, carne asada, pescado, chorizo, lengua and the list goes on. In most taquerias, the meat is carefully marinated and grilled. For example, Al Pastor is soaked for hours in a mixture of spices, chilies and pineapple before being slowly cooked on a rotisserie.

Unfortunately, many fast food places only offer one or two types of fillings, e.g. E.g. beef and chicken. After a certain Mexican grocery chain’s mysterious meat scandal, even fast-food restaurants have become stricter about using real meat and fewer fillers like wheat. While they don’t have as much flavor as traditional tacos, they’re still a good source of protein.

If you’re looking for a healthy taco option, we recommend lean chicken tacos or seafood tacos. These protein options are lower in fat than red meat, but they’re packed with protein. Fish and shrimp also contain essential nutrients such as vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids. If you’re not a big meat eater, there are plenty of restaurants, particularly in Mission Viejo, that serve vegetarian and vegan options. Beans, eggs, potatoes, soyrizo and mushrooms are tasty alternatives to typical meat products.

At Taqueros Mexican restaurant, and most other Mexican taco restaurants, the taco is served with a healthy helping of chopped onion and cilantro. These herbs cut the flavor of the hearty meat and add a delicious, aromatic flavor.

The tortillas

This is arguably the most important part of the taco that makes the taco a taco. There is a wide variety of tortillas or taco shells. To name a few, there are corn, flour, Dorito, and Spanish tortillas. Some restaurants serve double tortillas, some fry, and some do both! The taco is nothing without a soft, toasted tortilla to wrap the filling, onions, cilantro, and salsa together.

Most traditional Mexican restaurants serve their tacos on flour tortillas (with the exception of shrimp and fish). And as much as we love them, flour tortillas are refined carbohydrates. Although low in calories, they are quickly absorbed by the body and cause spikes in blood sugar and insulin. A healthier option is a corn tortilla or a whole wheat tortilla. These are complex carbohydrates that are higher in fiber and take longer to digest, keeping you fuller for longer. To make your tortillas soft yet crispy, grill them on the stovetop with a few drops of olive oil for a minute or two.

Stay away from fried tortillas. Fast food restaurants often use hydrogenated oils high in trans fats to cook their taco shells. This can lead to health complications such as high cholesterol, diabetes and heart disease when consumed in excess.

For a healthier hard shell, baked corn tortillas hold up just as well! Older tortillas tend to crisp up a bit faster, so wait until you’re near the end of your tortilla supply to start making your hard-shell tacos. Then just brush them with some olive oil and bake them in the oven. We like to add a pinch of paprika for a little sweetness.

The salsa

While salsa is relatively easy to make, it’s what really completes the taco. Most restaurants offer a variety of salsas, limes, and even pickles to add to the meal. Salsa is generally made with lime juice, tomatoes or tomatillos, onions, cilantro, chili, and other spices. Some of our favorites are salsa verde, pico de gallo, and chipotle salsa. If sugar or salt is added, it is very little because the ingredients in the salsa are already so flavorful. Overall, salsa is pretty healthy, so feel free to pile it on your tacos!

The only health issue associated with salsa is if it’s too hot! Spicy foods can irritate the stomach and cause indigestion. If you have trouble eating spicy saalsa on your tacos but enjoy the taste, slowly build your tolerance for it and eat in moderation.

Guacamole is a little less popular than salsa for tacos, but many people enjoy it. Because avocados are packed with healthy fats, fiber, and potassium, guacamole is generally quite healthy.

And there you have it! All the reasons tacos are a delicious, healthy meal when prepared right. Our tacos at Taqueros Mexican Restaurant are made with love from fresh ingredients and family recipes. We want our food to taste good and make you feel even better. Stop by our Mexican restaurant in San Juan Capistrano for a bite today!

How Much Taco Meat Per Person (Recipe For A Party)

Hi! How are you? It’s going great here! I’ve run and eaten and I own a cat so I have it all to myself… not too shabby.

However, I was in La La Land this morning and didn’t start my Garmin when I started running. I was running at a track I normally only use on long running days and I took a different route there so I didn’t really know how much I’d already run when I realized – 0.70 mile I’m guessing.

And running this trail got me thinking about safety again – I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately since I mentioned that three runners were attacked last month.

I usually run here on the weekends and there are lots of walkers, runners and cyclists. But today, on a random weekday morning, it was pretty quiet and I walked for a long time without seeing another person. It’s not smart to lead Monican!

Luckily I’m back home safe and talking to you nice folks, but now that I know this I’ll stick to more crowded trails on weekdays.

I’m sure Vegas was super happy I made it home. He loves to help me with my cool down exercises…

Crockpot Chicken Tacos

Yesterday I made Shredded Salsa Chicken in the Crockpot. This really is one of the easiest things you can ever do. It’s that simple, takes 2 minutes of “work” and is healthy. Boom.

(In the picture above I added carrots – I don’t usually do this but thought I’d change it up. It worked well as they were boiled and I mashed them up with the salsa and chicken to give it a pinch of vitamins adds, but didn’t really taste different.)

I usually use four chicken breasts for this recipe. Since my pack of chickens came with six, I baked the other two to eat on top of salads for lunch. It makes me feel like a meal prep superstar.

Once the chicken was done in the crockpot, I shredded it.

Another great thing about this method of cooking chicken is that it’s super easy to shred AND makes a lot of food. You can use this shredded chicken in tacos, burritos, enchiladas, on salads, in a bowl with rice and beans…

I made tacos with it last night and I’ll probably make enchiladas tonight.

Does someone else just put everything on a plate and make the tacos while they eat them? When we’re not making burritos, my family serves the food and then has tortillas on the side. This way you can rip off a piece of tortilla and grab some meat with it or make tacos.

However. To the title of this little post – tacos don’t make you fat….

I’ve seen a lot of jokes on Instagram about Taco Tuesday or the love of tacos being a problem.

The reality is that street tacos are pretty low in calories and healthy. An authentic Mexican street taco is on a small corn tortilla and has meat, onions and cilantro. They are served with salsa on the side so you can choose how spicy you want it. But they don’t usually have sour cream or cheese or guacamole.

A street taco has between 150 and 200 calories (approx). They’re often served on two tortillas, but you can skip one of those if you have crazy taco-eating skills.

But what can fill that little Mexican meal’s calories is what you drink…that’s probably the real harm of the diet.

Pair tacos with a light beer, skinny margarita, or a Paloma cocktail (or this random skinny cocktail I made before) and you’re done.

🔪 Step-by-step guide Start with quality raw ground beef. I like to use organic 93% lean 7% fat. Place the hamburger in a medium-sized skillet. Using a meat grinder and 5 curved blades, break the hamburger meat into small pieces. Place the pan on a stove set to medium heat. While the hamburger is cooking, stir with the meat grinder every few minutes to break up the hamburger. 2. When the meat is browned without pink, remove the pan from the heat. Prop the pan up slightly to allow the fat to drain to one side. Pull the brown beef to one side of the pan. Remove most of the fat with a large spoon. 3. Next, place a few pieces of kitchen paper in the pan to soak up any remaining grease. Discard the paper towel and repeat as needed. 4. Sprinkle in 3 tablespoons homemade taco seasoning mix and 1/3 cup water. Stir to coat the meat with the spice. 5. Simmer the meat and spices over low heat for 5 minutes. Stir every few minutes to keep the meat from sticking to the pan.
