When Crocs announced it would buy Hey Dude in December, Wall Street had doubts.

The stock immediately plummeted 12% as investors wondered why Crocs dumped $2.5 billion on a little-known Italian footwear company.

But Crocs might know something investors didn’t: Hey Dude, a brand known for its comfortable, lightweight shoes that come in biodegradable packaging, has quietly amassed legions of Gen Z fans.

According to Piper Sandler’s most recent semi-annual survey of teenagers in the United States, Hey Dude is ranked in the top 10 most popular shoe brands among teenagers for the second straight year. In 2019, Hey Dude ranked 54th among teens surveyed — by 2020 it had jumped to 17th. In December, Piper Sandler named Hey Dude as one of the fastest growing brands to be followed, according to CNBC.

Crocs CEO Andrew Rees told CNBC at the time that buying Hey Dude was a way to “add another brand that has its own icon” rather than diversify from Crocs’ ubiquitous clog.

The Hey Dude acquisition closed in February, and Crocs said at the time it expected the brand to bring in around $750 million in sales in 2022. Crocs plans to build Hey Dude to a $1 billion mark by 2024 by expanding its U.S. distribution and global customer base and adding new products to its lineup, the company said in an investor presentation.

In January, UBS analysts wrote that Crocs’ 2022 outlook should boost investor sentiment as “it should show the market CROX Hey Dude isn’t buying because its core Crocs business is slowing.”

So what makes Hey Dude so popular?

Founded in 2008 by Alessandro Rosano, Hey Dude started with a single style, a slip-on shoe called Wally.

Hey Dude fans say his shoes are light, supportive and comfortable – much like Crocs – and made with sustainability in mind. The shoes are made from recycled cork, plastic and leather and shipped to customers in cornstarch packaging.

Hey Dudes are sold online and at national retailers such as Journey’s and Buckle. The Wally and women’s alternative, the Wendy, retail for $60, while the brand’s more expensive boot styles range from $80 to $90.

It seems like part of the brand’s popularity can be attributed to TikTok — the platform hosts hundreds of video clients showing off their Hey Dudes collections.

“Love these! 10/10 recommend,” a user by the name of @sttepphhyy posted of his new Hey Dudes. Another user @naidelyy09 called Hey Dudes “the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever worn”.

Some fans have shared videos from their bridal and groomsmen parties wearing Hey Dude shoes to their wedding, while others have started customizing the upper part of the shoe with leather patches or branding.

Many of the videos are tagged with US states like Florida or Texas, which makes sense: Crocs’ Rees told CNBC in December that 95% of the company’s sales are made in the US and that the “core” of Hey Dude’s popularity is in the Midwest lies and the south.

“It hasn’t spread to shore as much as some other companies and this is our opportunity,” he said. “We think it has far more potential, both here in the US and around the world.”

I’ve picked up the most popular styles of Hey Dude shoes so I can try them out for myself and directly compare Hey Dude shoe sizes to other popular shoe brands’ sizes (using photos). Do Hey Dude shoes run large or small?

In my experience, Hey Dude men’s shoes fit true to size compared to other types of slip-on casual shoes. For women, Hey Dude shoes have a slightly looser fit than other types of popular slip-on shoes (but still pretty much the same). In general, for both men and women, I would recommend ordering your normal size for Hey Dude shoes. Sometimes these types of casual slip-on shoes have a snug fit compared to lace-up shoes as these slip-ons rely on a snug design to ensure a reliable fit as they do not use regular laces.

I’ve found this to be the case with the Hey Dude men’s sizes (sporty lace-ups run larger than the Hey Dude men’s sizes). But for women, I found the Hey Dude sizing to be very comparable to the sizing of lace-up athletic shoes, and in fact, I found the Hey Dude women’s shoes to be just a tiny bit looser than other popular casual slip-on shoes like Vans .

Do Hey Dude shoes run large or small?

As I discussed above, I found the Hey Dude Shoe to be true to size compared to other types of casual slip on shoes. But they run smaller than popular sporty lace-ups. This snug design allows for a reliable fit without regular laces.

But for women, I found the sizing very comparable to athletic lace-up shoes. For example, here is a size 7 Nike Air Max compared to a size 7 Hey Dude Wendy Sox:

The Hey Dude Laila shoes are what Hey Dude calls “boat shoes”. The overall appearance is very similar to the Hey Dude Wendy Sox shoes, except the tip area is closer to the toe.

Are Hey Dude shoes wide?

Yes, certain types of Hey Dude shoes are offered in a wide fit. For example, the Hey Dude Wally Sox shoes have several different versions. The Hey Dude Wally Sox Tri-Tone Shoes and Hey Dude Wally Sox Stretch Shoes are both listed as “Wide Fit”.

I own the Hey Dude Tri-Tone shoes which are among the shoes listed as a wide fit. To be honest, I don’t notice a significant difference between the Hey Dude Wally Sox Tri-Tone shoes (which are listed as a wide fit) and my Hey Dude Wally Sox Classics (which are not listed as a wide fit).

Below I have the Tri-Tone (left) versus the Classics (right).

In my experience, Hey Dude shoes have an average width. For example, I found them to be a little roomier compared to Vans slip-ons:

But what to keep in mind when buying Hey Dude shoes if you have wide feet is that the material is very stretchy and forgiving. For example, in the 9 second video below, I tried to capture how stretchy my Hey Dude shoes are:

Yes, hey dude shoes stretch. The material is very stretchy and forgiving, easily conforming to the unique shape of my foot.

Are Hey Dude shoes comfortable?

Hey Dude shoes are very comfortable to wear in large part because, as we discussed above, the material of most (but not all) of their shoes is a stretchy material that feels almost like a thick sock on the side of the foot .

But another reason Hey Dude shoes are comfortable is that they use thick memory foam insoles for underfoot comfort. In the photo below, I tried to capture how thick the memory foam insoles are:

Hey Dude shoes are also very light, which makes them comfortable to wear. The Hey Dude Wally Sox Classics for men weigh 0.45 pounds per shoe for a size 12 shoe:

Do Hey Dude shoes come in half sizes?

Unfortunately, Hey Dude’s shoe sizes are not currently available in half sizes. If you’re wondering if Hey Dude shoes run large or small, maybe you normally wear a half size and are now stuck between sizes.

The official Hey Dude sizing page advises customers, “If you normally wear half sizes, we recommend going up one size for the best fit.” I hope the Hey Dude shoe size comparison photos used on this page will help you find the right fit to find.

Suede has a soft grain that is best cleaned with a special brush, which you can purchase with a suede cleaning kit. If your shoes have a care label, use what the manufacturer suggests. Suede is also sensitive to water, so simple dirt and scuffs are best removed when shoes are dry.

If you don’t have a suede brush, use the emery board nail file to agitate the suede, then steam it with a kettle or iron. The heat should help open the pores of the suede and make cleaning easier.

If you won’t be wearing your shoes for a long time, wrap them in tissue paper and place them in a shoe box. Keep them away from excess moisture and light as suede can mold in humid conditions and bright light can discolor your shoes.

Scuffs, dirt and water

Use the suede cleaning brush to easily remove any dust or dirt that has built up on your shoes. Don’t go back and forth, brush in the same direction repeatedly. Sometimes simply brushing can improve the appearance of the suede. If the shoes are heavily worn, it can mean that the grain of the suede is being pushed in one direction. Lift the grain by vigorously brushing worn areas back and forth with a suede brush. For scuff marks that are too dull to lift with a brush, try scraping with a knife to lift the pile.

Scuffs and stains that don’t brush out can often be removed by rubbing with an eraser, a piece of crepe rubber (the crimped rubber used to make many shoe soles), or a special suede eraser. Apply moderate pressure and increase as needed.

Water can discolor suede, but properly applied water can also remove water stains. Use a sponge or dry cloth to soak up excess water. Gently pat until the suede is evenly wet, then allow the shoes to dry with a shoe tree or stuff the shoes with dry, colorless paper as this will absorb the water in the shoe and help the shoes retain their original shape. Do not use newspaper as excess ink can get into your shoes. After letting them dry overnight in a well-ventilated area, go over the shoes lightly with a suede brush as this will help bring the grain back to its original appearance.

To clean muddy shoes, allow the dirt to dry and then wipe off the excess mud without pressing too hard on the suede. Once the mud has set, you should be able to break off the larger chunks with your hands. Then use a suede brush to break up the remaining dirt particles.

Once they’re clean (or when you first get them), spray a coat of suede protectant spray on your shoes, as this will help prevent further stains and stains. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the product you are using.

Stubborn stains

To remove oil or unknown stains, use a suede brush to scrub the stain as you would a scuff. If the stain is particularly stubborn, consider using a nail brush and warm water to scrub. Grease stains are difficult to remove from suede and heavily soiled shoes may never look good again. Some recommend sprinkling cornstarch on wet oil stains and letting it dry overnight, brushing the starch off after drying, then steaming it with the steam of an iron to strip the oil from the suede.

More drastic measures may be necessary in the case of heavy soiling. If gum sticks to your shoes, put them in the freezer for a few hours. The gum will eventually harden enough that you can knock it off in large chunks, and the remaining mark can be buffed away with a suede brush.

Pick up blood stains with cotton balls and hydrogen peroxide. Slowly blot the stain with a peroxide-soaked cotton ball until blood comes out, then allow the shoes to dry and buff with a suede brush.

Get ink before it gets solid. If you spill ink on your kicks, grab a towel and try to wipe it up quickly. When it hardens, scrape off the stain with sandpaper. A cotton ball with rubbing alcohol can also help minimize the appearance of the stain. After removing as much of the stain as possible, allow to dry and buff any remaining stains with a suede brush.

Apply white vinegar to troublesome stains. If a stain is resistant to normal methods, apply a small amount of vinegar with a soft rag or towel before allowing to dry and then agitate with a suede brush. This can also be a good method for getting rid of salt lines.

For dry stains, brush steel wool vigorously against dry stains. However, note that you may need to roughen the rest of the shoe to get an even look after the stain has been removed.

If you can’t clean your shoes using any of the above methods, the chances of solving the suede color issues are extremely slim and can further damage your shoes in the long run. If you get it quick, you can prevent a water stain by patiently applying pressure to the right with a paper towel. If your shoelaces get dirty, you might be able to put them in the laundry, depending on what they’re made of.

Step 4:

Do not use the dryer for your shoes. Dry them outside or inside, but remember to keep them out of direct sunlight to avoid fading or damaging the fabric.

How to Wash Hey Dudes: A Quick Tutorial

Find a dirty pair of Hey Dude shoes that you want to revitalize. (We picked up a pair that had literally stepped through the mud!) Rinse off any big chunks of dirt to prepare for your washing machine. Remove insoles & shoelaces! If you want to wash these parts of your shoes, you should hand wash them with a mild dish detergent and then lay them flat to dry. You can also buy replacement insoles online. How to Wash Colored Hey Dudes: Wash them in your washing machine on Delicates, Hand Wash, or Easy. Add a very small amount of your favorite liquid detergent and wash in cold water only to avoid shrinking your shoes. Also, make sure you choose Slow Spin or No Spin if you can to reduce wrinkles! How to Wash White Hey Dudes: Spray them all over with Dawn Powerwash and then let that sit for at least an hour. You can then rinse the Dawn and gently scrub with a soft cleaning brush. Run half a full sink of warm water and mix in half a cup of Out White Bright. Place your white Hey Dude shoes fabric side down in the water and place something on top so all the fabric is completely submerged. Let them soak like this for at least two hours! After that time, just throw them in your washing machine and wash them alone in cold water without any other detergents. AIR DRIED! Using the machine dryer for your shoes will cause them to shrink or warp. We recommend drying them in a place that is not exposed to direct sunlight, as the rays can damage the fabrics. In my experience, regular Hey Dude shoes are average width, but I’ve found them to be very forgiving as the material is light and stretchy, even on many of their shoes. I would say the first thing to understand is that the material used in Hey Dude Wally Sox Classics and Hey Dude Wendy Sox Classics is very stretchy and forgiving and while the width of the shoe is just that, what I would call average I found The shoe is said to be very comfortable as the fabric molds easily to the unique shape of my foot.

Again, yes, Hey Dude makes wide fit shoes.

But it’s worth noting that when I personally tried a Hey Dudes wide fit shoe, I didn’t notice much of a size difference (if any) from their standard classic shoe. For example, below is my Hey Dude Wally Sox Tri-Tone on the left (which is listed as a Wide Fit) next to my Hey Dude Wally Sox Classic on the right (which is not listed as a Wide Fit):

For me the fit was exactly the same.

Overall, I found the width of the Hey Dude shoes to be what I would consider average. Comparing Hey Dude shoes to Vans loafers, I felt that the Hey Dude Wally Sox Classics had a slightly looser, wider fit overall:

But when I compared them to Crocs (which are known for their roomy fit), I found the Crocs shoes to be a lot wider than the Hey Dude Wally Sox Classic shoes:

That was also the case when I compared the Hey Dude Wendy Sox women’s shoes to a pair of Crocs Classics:

But I would like to reiterate that the material of these shoes is very forgiving and in my experience will stretch and conform to the unique shape of my foot. Obviously, every foot is unique, and yours might not be the case.

If you need a wide fit Hey Dude shoes, they have several options listed as wide fit (we’ll discuss these options later). But in my experience, when I tried one of these wide fit Hey Dude shoes, I found that the sizing was practically the same as the Hey Dude classics.

Are Hey Dude shoes comfortable for wide feet?

In my experience, Hey Dude shoes are comfortable for four main reasons:

They are stretchy

They use thick memory foam insoles

You are flexible

They are light

Hey dude shoes use stretchy fabric

First, let me point out that certain types of Hey Dude shoes do not use stretch material. But the most classic type of Hey Dude shoe (for example, the Hey Dude Wally Sox Classics and the Hey Dude Wendy Sox Classics) are made of a stretchy, lightweight fabric that feels almost like a thick sock on the side of the foot.

In the image below, I’ve tried to capture just how stretchy and forgiving the toe box of my Hey Dude Wally Sox Classic shoes is:

Hey Dude shoes use thick memory foam insoles

Second, Hey Dude shoes use thick memory foam insoles under the foot that really cushion the foot and make the shoes very comfortable to wear. In the photo below I was trying to capture how thick these memory foam insoles are:

Most of us raise our fingers or hands to our face countless times a day without even realizing it. But you might notice if your hands have a strange smell.

Bad or weird hand odors are usually temporary and go away on their own. “Hands and fingernails tend to pick up odors just from touching different things,” Miami-based dermatologist Anna Chacon, MD, tells LIVESTRONG.com.

However, certain culprits don’t just cause odors that are limited to your hands. Some foods, drinks, and medications can generally cause increased body odor, which you may notice on your hands. Less commonly, unpleasant odors can also result from an underlying medical condition.

Why do your hands smell bad and how to get rid of the stench? Here are six common causes of hand odor and what you can do about it.

1. You touched something smelly

Spicy foods like onions or garlic have a strong, sulfur-like odor that can linger on your hands after you touch them, explains Dr. Chacon.

You might also notice a musty or metallic odor after touching coins or other ferrous metals, which occurs when compounds in the metals break down in the presence of the oils on your skin, according to an older but widely cited October 2006 study in Angewandte Chemistry, Journal of the Society of German Chemists.

​Fix it:​ Washing with an antibacterial soap can help you fight odors for short-term medications like a penicillin cycle. However, if you’re struggling with hand odor caused by a medication that’s been prescribed for long-term use, talk to your doctor. It may be possible to adjust your dose or try a different medication.

4. You’re a heavy sweater

If your palms seem constantly plagued by smelly sweat or dampness, you could have bromhidrosis. The disorder, which is characterized by excessive sweating, can, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) can cause hands or other body parts to have an unpleasant odor when sweat mixes with naturally occurring bacteria on the skin.

Remedy: Bromhidrosis isn’t caused by poor hygiene, but not washing often enough can make the problem worse. 5. You have nail fungus

Do you notice a foot-like odor…on your hands? If the spark seems to linger particularly around your nails, you could be dealing with nail fungus or what doctors call onychomycosis. “It often smells like rotten cheese,” says Dr. Chacon.

Nail fungus is more likely to occur in the toenails, but it can also affect fingernails. In addition to that foul odor, fungal nails can appear thick, yellow or whitish, brittle or brittle, or have a distorted shape, according to the Mayo Clinic.

When the trimethylamine builds up in the body, it can be excreted through a person’s sweat, urine, or breath, according to the NLM.

Fix it: If you suspect a medical condition is behind your smelly hands, consult your doctor who can diagnose and create a treatment plan. There’s no cure for trimethylaminuria, but the odor can be managed by changing your diet and/or taking vitamin B12, probiotic supplements, antibiotics, or activated charcoal, notes the Genetic and Rare Diseases Information Center.

An unpleasant odor on your hands that lasts a day or two is probably nothing to worry about, especially if you’ve touched or eaten something with a strong smell.

But if you’re struggling with hand or body odor that you can’t explain or that doesn’t seem to be going away, call your doctor. The intense odor could be a sign of an underlying condition that needs treatment, says Dr. Chacon.
