Launched as a Taco Bell exclusive in 2004 (back when Mtn was still a “mountain”), Mtn Dew Baja Blast has since inspired decades of chain-exclusive Mtn Dew flavors, including two this year alone: Mtn Dew Legend at Buffalo Wild Wings and Mtn Dew Purple Thunder at Circle K. But Baja Blast has remained popular over the years, and has been released in retail stores semi-annually during the summer since 2014.
For Summer 2022, that means both Baja Blast and Baja Blast Zero Sugar are returning to store shelves nationwide for a limited time, along with a couple of new iterations: Mtn Dew Baja Mango Gem and Mtn Dew Baja Gold. The former is billed as a “colorful tropical mango-orange flavor,” while the latter is “a bright island pineapple flavor.”

Ricky Reilly (@rickyreilly3) chose the former, and his home remedy Baja Blast has been viewed more than 1.8 million times since he uploaded it last Sunday.
The appeal — or perhaps the scandal — of Reilly’s DIY Baja Blast recipe lies in its simplicity. “I was told the other day that the Mountain Dew that you can only get at Taco Bell, the Baja Blast, is actually just regular Mountain Dew and Blue Powerade,” he says. “Let’s put this shit to the test.”
Reilly fills half a glass with Mountain Dew, then adds blue Powerade until the color approximates that of a Baja Blast in the store. He sips his brew “in the name of science” and then looks at the camera with surprised satisfaction.
“I’m not a dewologist, but I think we may have cracked the code here,” he says.
Not all viewers were convinced.
“Since powerade is a coke product and mt. Tau is Pepsi, the answer is no,” commented @demolition_redneck. In fact, PepsiCo bought Taco Bell in 1978, and the company only serves Pepsi products.
Other people thought Reilly’s ratio was wrong or that his tonic was missing an ingredient.
“Mix 2 parts Diet Dew and 1 part [Blue] Powerade and that’s spot on,” commented @theweendoat.
“60% Mountain Dew, 30% Blue Powerade, 10% Sprite,” said @urkiddinglol.
Scores of viewers were also confused by Reilly’s claim that Baja Blast can only be found at Taco Bell, claiming the drink will be available in stores “forever.” However, Reilly said he could not find it in his native New Hampshire.
A supposed Pepsi insider appeared to come to the rescue in the comments section.
“Brother actually I work for Pepsi and it’s not these two here in NH btw it’s Mountain Dew and Voltage mixed,” wrote @definitelynotthatguy. “And we will start selling in bottles from May to August.”
