Launched as a Taco Bell exclusive in 2004 (back when Mtn was still a “mountain”), Mtn Dew Baja Blast has since inspired decades of chain-exclusive Mtn Dew flavors, including two this year alone: ​​Mtn Dew Legend at Buffalo Wild Wings and Mtn Dew Purple Thunder at Circle K. The Claim: For years, Mountain Dew contained a dangerous chemical that is also used as a flame retardant. This ingredient was recently removed.

For years, claims have circulated online that Mountain Dew lemon-lime soda contains a dangerous additive called brominated vegetable oil, which is also used as a flame retardant.

A particular Facebook post from April 2017 by user Betsy Ball Clark has garnered more than 1.1 million shares over the past three years. The article continued to be read and disseminated in May of this year.

“BVO is a toxic chemical that is banned in many countries because it competes with iodine for receptor sites in the body, which can lead to hypothyroidism, autoimmune disease and cancer,” Clark’s post said.

A key ingredient in BVO, bromine, is a “toxic, caustic chemical” that has been linked to serious organ damage, birth defects and other medical problems, the post said.

Clark’s post cites an online article — the link no longer works in the Facebook post — that says Mountain Dew is “flame retardant.”

BVO is a patented flame retardant for plastic and has been banned as a food additive in Europe and Japan. Soda binges have led to medical problems in some patients, the citation said.

Clark updated her post this month and said she emailed PepsiCo Inc., which makes Mountain Dew, and received confirmation that the company had removed BVO as an ingredient in Mountain Dew.

Clark did not respond to a request for comment.

What is brominated vegetable oil?

Brominated vegetable oil has been used as a food additive since the 1930s to prevent ingredients in sodas and other beverages from separating.

Robert McGorrin, a professor of food science and technology at Oregon State University, said that BVO acts as an emulsifier, particularly in beverages that use citrus oils, to keep the citrus oils from floating to the top of the beverage.

“Rather than they kind of converge and ring at the top — form a film on top of the soda — they’re evenly distributed throughout,” he said.

However, the additive is banned in some countries due to concerns about possible health risks if ingested in large quantities.

The product originally carried a “Generally Recognized as Safe” designation from the US Food and Drug Administration, but that designation was removed in the 1970s. The FDA has held the position since 1977 that BVO is “tentative” safe to use provided it is used in amounts less than 15 parts per million.

McGorrin said most beverages that contain BVO use it in much smaller amounts, e.g. B. 8 parts per million.

In 2014, Coca-Cola Co. and PepsiCo announced that they would remove brominated vegetable oil from their soft drinks. The announcement came as public pressure to remove the additive, in part because of a Change.org campaign started by Mississippi teenager Sarah Kavanagh in 2012. Her campaign began when she began asking PepsiCo to remove BVO from its Gatorade products.

Despite both companies announcing it in 2014, reports last year indicated that the ingredient remained in Mountain Dew.

But this ingredient was recently removed. Nutritional information published on PepsiCo’s product information website no longer includes brominated vegetable oil as an ingredient. PepsiCo did not respond to a request for comment on when and why it removed the ingredient from the soft drink.

Is brominated vegetable oil really a flame retardant?

For years, BVO has been compared to brominated flame retardants, leading to claims like the one mentioned in the post that Mountain Dew contains “flame retardants.”

But the reality is more nuanced, said Christopher Reddy, a scientist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution who has studied brominated flame retardants and other brominated compounds.

BVO could be used – and has been patented as a flame retardant, he said. But the fact that it’s patented doesn’t mean it’s in common use or related to the vast majority of other brominated flame retardants.

The usual brominated flame retardants used differ from the food additives, he said.

“Bringing all brominated flame retardants together as a single entity when considering how they can interact with people and the environment is incorrect,” he said.

McGorrin said that the common brominated flame retardants that are used have chemical compositions other than BVO. Equating the two would be like comparing Splenda, a sweetener, to bleach, as both contain the element chlorine.

“People just hear the word ‘brominated’ and think of all the negative connotations that the word bromine carries,” he said.

In response to articles comparing BVO to flame retardants, the Bromine Science and Environmental Forum – an industry group representing companies that manufacture brominated flame retardants – issued a statement stating its member companies “Never use BVO as a flame retardant have marketed”.

“Aside from the fact that both contain bromine, there is no direct link between brominated vegetable oil and brominated flame retardants,” the statement said.

Is Brominated Vegetable Oil Safe?

Brominated vegetable oil has been controversial for years, and questions about the additive’s overall safety have continued to be raised.

American Beverage Association spokeswoman Danielle Smotkin said in a statement that BVO is “safe, FDA approved and listed as an ingredient when used.”

However, some scientists have recommended further research into the ingredient over the past decade. An Environmental Health News article published in Scientific American in 2011 states that there have been a few cases of patients requiring medical attention for bromine-related symptoms such as memory loss and nervous disorders after drinking large quantities of soda – more than 2 liters had per day – that contained BVO.

Walter Vetter, a food chemist at Germany’s University of Hohenheim who has studied brominated vegetable oil, told Environmental Health News that “scientific data is scarce” regarding BVO and merits further investigation.

Charles Vorhees, a toxicologist at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center who studied the effects of BVO more than 30 years ago, also told Environmental Health News that chemical assessments have improved over the years and he believes BVO is becoming more common should be investigated.

The New York Times also reported in 2012 that some limited studies on BVO in humans and animals found tissue accumulation of bromine.

Reddy told USA TODAY that he believes there is still a gray area in scientists’ understanding of BVO.

“We know we drink it,” he said. “But I don’t think it’s fully understood where it goes when it passes your teeth, how long it stays in your body, and whether it breaks down in your body – whether it causes significant damage to the body or even chronic damage.” ”

He said the stories cited in articles like the Scientific American often stem from acute use, significant amounts drunk at one time. But drinking smaller amounts over time might be different.

“I haven’t seen any data that really works with differences like that,” he said.

Katherine Zeratsky, a registered dietitian at the Mayo Clinic who has written about the use of brominated vegetable oil in beverages, agreed that she believes there isn’t that much research on accumulation over time.

She said she believes drinking soda in moderation, such as one can a day, is unlikely to have any harmful effects. The concerns come when a person drinks larger amounts.

“There are concerns that — particularly with this additive and many others — your body has to process it somehow,” she said.

Zeratsky said she advises people to avoid large amounts of BVO-containing beverages.

Our verdict: partly wrong

The Facebook post claim that brominated vegetable oil is no longer in Mountain Dew is true. The use of brominated vegetable oil has declined over the years as major companies have eliminated the additive from their beverages in favor of other emulsifiers.

However, experts agree that a blanket comparison of the additive to the flame retardant has few nuances. It has been patented as such, but is not the same as the widely used brominated flame retardants.

Experts also say that it’s also not conclusively proven that drinking the amount of brominated vegetable oil found in soft drinks leads to all of the negative health effects mentioned in the post. However, scientists agree that more information is likely needed to further the understanding of the ingredient’s ability to accumulate in the human body over time, and that some people who drink large amounts of soda at one time have experienced side effects.

This caution is reflected in the FDA’s categorization of BVO as being allowed in certain amounts on a “tentative” basis, as well as the banning of the ingredient in some overseas countries.

Ah yes. I wonder why chicken laced with a toxic substance is banned from the UK (and the European Union in general…). Could it be that it’s poison and actually has been shown to cause cancer? Maybe that has something to do with it.

Anyway, arsenic-tipped chicken is something you’ll find in the US as it makes your blood vessels appear pinker – and therefore fresher. Although the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says levels of arsenic used are too low to harm humans, E.U. has none of it.

2. Puffer Fish

Although puffer fish are considered a delicacy in Japan, they have gained a frightening reputation as one fish contains enough venom to kill 30 adults! Because of this, chefs need special training before even thinking about preparing the fish. And even the Emperor of Japan is forbidden to eat it!

Because the fish can be deadly if not properly prepared, the puffer fish is banned throughout the European Union. All the more reason for us to travel to Japan, right?

Not only does it look a bit coarse, but the “meat” is more likely to carry pathogens since it’s pulled from the bone. None of this escaped Jamie Oliver’s notice. He successfully waged a war against McDonald’s to ban it from their burgers in the US. Thankfully we don’t have any issues with it here in the UK as the EU has banned it entirely!

Considered a real delicacy in Korea, sannakji is a true art in every sense. It consists of nakji (a small squid) cut into small pieces and then served immediately. The only problem with this is that there is a high risk of choking. Or suffocation. Neither are very desirable outcomes after a good meal. Your Mountain Dew contains flame retardants. This lime-green hued soda (and other bubbly, citrus-flavored pops) won’t keep your insides fireproof, but it does contain brominated vegetable oil, a patented plastic flame retardant that’s banned in foods across Europe and Japan.

Brominated vegetable oil, or BVO, which acts as an emulsifier in citrus-flavored sodas, is found in about 10 percent of sodas sold in the United States.

“After a few extreme soda binges — not far from what many gamers regularly consume — some patients required medical attention for skin lesions, memory loss, and nerve disorders, all symptoms of overexposure to bromine,” according to a recent article in the environmental news.

PepsiCo., owner of Mountain Dew, declined to comment on the brand-specific issue.

But most safety studies conducted on animals use very high doses of BVO, up to 200 times the amount allowed in US soft drinks. As the old adage goes in toxicology, the dose makes the poison, said Dr. John Spangler, professor of family and community medicine at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. Even drinking too much water too quickly would cause water intoxication, he said.

The Food and Drug Administration limits the use of BVO to 15 parts per million in fruit-flavored beverages.

“Bromated vegetable oil is considered safe by the FDA for use as a flavoring adjuvant in fruit-flavored beverages due to a large safety margin between the expected human exposure from its use and the highest unobserved side effects from multiple long-term animal studies conducted with this substance ‘ an FDA spokesman said in an email to ABCNews.com.

“The 15 ppm (parts per million) dose was set well below the limit with no observed effect,” Spangler said.

“Nonetheless, BVO accumulates in the heart, liver, and adipose tissue,” Spangler said. “New studies are warranted to update the old studies, especially given that the patterns of soft drink consumption have changed so dramatically over the past three decades.”

U.S. consumers have long wanted their food to look and feel a certain way, said LuAnn White, director at Tulane University’s Center for Applied Environmental Health. And so in our food, additional colourings, chemicals and preservatives are used to get a certain appearance.

“The marketing of a lot of food has led a lot of people to expect a certain look from food that isn’t necessarily the color that the food really is,” White said. “Some food additives are useful for maintaining food quality, but many colorings don’t necessarily serve a useful purpose beyond marketing and appearance.”

Despite the worrying-sounding ingredients, experts agreed that the biggest killer is the excess sugar and calories found in most sodas.

“By contrast, diabetes and obesity are also very serious diseases and unfortunately far more common, and they cause far more deaths than bromism ever did,” said Dr. Marcel Casavant, chief of pharmacology and toxicology at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Ohio. “For that reason alone, the dose of sweeteners in these products is more dangerous than the dose of bromine.”

A 20-ounce bottle of Mountain Dew contains 290 calories, 77 grams of sugar, and 91 milligrams of caffeine.

“None of us should add too much sugar to our diet; even small doses might be ‘too much’ for some diabetics and some obese people, while most of us can handle a little more,” Casavant said.

While it’s easier to draw attention to a chemical, the more dangerous problem is the high calorie count of sodas, White said. The example of video gamers should draw attention to the sedentary lifestyle that is now so prevalent in the US, White added.

“Obesity is the underlying cause of many of the chronic diseases that plague the US population,” White said. “This is by far the greater health risk. PepsiCo. and the Boston Beer Company have officially launched a line of spiked Mountain Dew drinks, Hard MTN DEW.

The official release adds Baja Blast to the flavor palette, which featured only Black Cherry, Watermelon, and Original Mountain Dew when the canned beverages were first announced last August.
