The study included 134 patients with advanced chronic kidney disease and metabolic acidosis, a condition caused by low levels of bicarbonate. The patients were randomly divided into two groups, one of which took a small tablet of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) daily.
The decline in kidney function was about two-thirds slower in the patients taking sodium bicarbonate than in other patients. Rapid progression of kidney disease occurred in 9 percent of patients taking sodium bicarbonate, compared with 45 percent of other patients, the researchers found.
The study found that patients taking sodium bicarbonate showed improvements in several nutritional parameters, and although their sodium levels increased, there were no issues related to higher blood pressure. These patients were also less likely to develop end-stage renal disease requiring dialysis.
The results appeared online July 16 in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.
“This cheap and simple strategy has the potential to translate into significant economic benefits, quality of life and clinical outcomes,” said researcher Dr. Magdi Yaqoob of the Royal London Hospital in England in a press release from the American Society of Nephrology.
Low levels of bicarbonate in chronic kidney disease patients can lead to other health problems, said Yaqoob, who added that a “simple remedy like sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) can be very effective when used appropriately.”

For the cosmetic dentist Dr. Rhona Eskander, owner of Chelsea Dental Clinic, the main problem with this hack is that people diagnose themselves and decide that something is wrong with their teeth. “It’s enormously risky to diagnose yourself,” she says. “Why are your teeth yellow? Do you suffer from gum disease or receding gums? If so, you can do more damage with home remedies – please see a dentist.”
