What is devotional to God?
What is a devotional? Unlike devotions, a devotional is a book meant to help guide your time with God. So in your devotions, you may read a devotional, but you don’t have to. Many devotionals have Scriptures in them and also the author’s explanation of the passage or spiritual encouragement.
What does devotional mean in the Bible?
1a : religious fervor : piety. b : an act of prayer or private worship —usually used in plural during his morning devotions.
What is a devotional practice?
Thomas Aquinas defined devotions as external manifestations of devotion, an (inner) relationship between the believer and God. “The devotions we have for God’s saints, dead or living”, he wrote, “do … From: devotional practices in Encyclopedia of the Middle Ages »

What is the purpose of devotionals?
The general purpose of a devotional is to encourage spiritual growth. Not all spiritual journeys are the same, so different devotionals serve different purposes. This includes individual devotions, group devotions, or family devotions.

Devotions offer a format
Most devotionals contain a simple but effective format. For example, today’s devotional begins with a scripture. The scripture is the root of devotion and a starting point for reflection. The Reflection Is the Body of the Devotional is a reflection written by an author to help the reader focus on God’s Word and teaching. A daily devotional ends with a prayer related to Scripture and reflection.
Devotions provide a purpose
The general purpose of a devotional is to promote spiritual growth. Not all spiritual journeys are created equal, so different devotionals serve different purposes. These include individual devotions, group devotions or family devotions. Some people prefer to log their spiritual devotions to document their spiritual growth.
Devotions provide time for daily prayer and meditation
Most devotions involve some sort of seasonal or calendar rhythm. Daily devotions are an example of this. They are helpful because time for meditation and prayer is built into the format. Some people prefer shorter devotions and others find deeper reflections more appropriate. You need to find a rhythm that will keep you stable on your spiritual journey. Considering the daily devotions? We have a few suggestions available online.
Devotional helps you draw closer to God through study and reflection, but finding the right one is important. I suggest trying the Today Devotional. Otherwise, there are hundreds of devotionals out there to explore—printed and online. Whichever devotional you choose, may God bless your time of study and reflection.
What is the difference between Bible study and devotional?
Remember that a Devotional is created by someone, somewhere and subject to their particular way of thinking. Whilst a personal Bible study is focussed on a section of the Bible which the Holy Spirit will have prompted you to choose for study. Some Devotionals suggest just one or two verses as ‘The Reading for the Day’.
The Word Before Work by Jordan Raynor
Reading your Bible, whether from cover to cover, chronologically or according to some other schedule, should be part of your devotional time, i.e. the time you spend with God, praying or simply “sitting at His feet” and listening to Him as Mary (Luke 10 Vs 38-42) You can find out more about this in the article Reading the Bible – Why should you do that?
When it comes to devotional and Bible study, today we are blessed with access to so much information on the Internet. And you can find many schemes, plans and ideas for them online. But how to choose what to do can be a problem. So let’s start with what is meant by each term
Definition of devotion
This used to refer to a book, pamphlet, or monthly magazine that contained a Bible passage for the day. A few thoughts on the topic of the reading and a short prayer. Today it often refers to a list of Bible readings for a set period (number of days/week/month) on a topic, e.g. B. Christmas, Discipline, Taming the Tongue, etc.
Definition of Bible Study
Studying a portion of the Bible using a prescribed method to gain deeper understanding and insight into the text. Learn more about God and mankind and the divine plan of salvation etc. Bible study can be entire books, chapters, or verses. As well as character studies, word studies, or subjects traced throughout the Bible. Other approaches consider historical, geographic, and cultural background studies.
Worship vs. Bible study
As you will see, a devotional is different from a Bible study. Remember that a devotional is created by someone, somewhere, and dependent on their particular mindset. While a personal Bible study focuses on a passage of the Bible that the Holy Spirit will have asked you to choose.
Some devotionals suggest just a verse or two as the “reading for the day.” Not only can these verses be taken out of context, it also implies that a few verses is enough to “feed” you for the day. And the stage of life you are in right now may mean that this is all you have.
However, they can increase the value of the read by exploring the wider passage around them. If you can meditate on the passage for the day, great! If you use the verses for the day to create a verse mapping, even better! (And here comes a crossover…….If you do a verse chart, you’ve completed a Bible study!)
You have added value to this brief read by inviting God to speak to you through His Word and to give you lasting nourishment.
Avoid becoming overwhelmed by Bible study
A devotional Bible reading can be short and complete. But in Bible study, the approach must be different. You may be able to complete a study in one day if you choose one of the shorter methods. The more intensive the study, the longer it takes. So you need to approach it more like an ongoing project that needs to be completed over multiple sessions (possibly days/weeks) rather than a one-off quick fix!
It’s all too easy to get overwhelmed with a Bible study when time is short, which is why here at Honey Bible Study all the methods are broken down into steps. And many of the studies are linked because they build on each other. The simple illustration below shows how this works
For more help, you can read how to choose a Bible study HERE
Finally
Using a devotional and conducting a Bible study are not the same. They both have a place in the Christian life and time must be set aside to do them. How much time you have in your current life stage will have a big impact on what you want to do. But remember
Doing something is better than doing nothing
God will honor the time you take to spend with him
Anyone can study the Bible—you don’t need a degree or a pastor!
Anything you read or study in the Bible will enrich your Christian life, heart, and soul
If time is extremely limited, at least try to read your Bible and pray every day. If that means using a guided selection for reading, then by all means look for the best devotional you can find.
If you have time to read from a Bible reading schedule, choose one that fits the time you have available. But if you can, try to set aside some time each week for a Bible study

Why do Christians do devotions?
A devotional helps you break things down by providing selected scripture passages, easy to understand teaching, and even suggestions for prayer. Learning more and more about God each day will help you deepen your relationship with him.
The Word Before Work by Jordan Raynor
You grow spiritually
If you have a desire to grow spiritually, try incorporating devotion into your daily life. Devotionals are a great place to find inspiration for your spiritual journey. Different readings make you ponder the Word of God and encounter thoughtful teachings on important spiritual issues. Devotions also encourage you to spend time in prayer. While each individual day may not seem particularly impactful, the cumulative effect will cause you to grow and mature as you make time with God each day. The more we connect with God, the more we will understand what he says about himself, his kingdom and his people.
you get to know god
God created us to be in relationship with him. When sin corrupted the world, we were separated from God, but He never stopped wanting to be in relationship with us. As fallen humans, we want to know our Creator and we should strive to become more like Him. What better way to get to know God than by studying His Word? However, the Bible can often raise questions and sometimes be difficult to understand. A devotional helps you break things down by providing selected scriptures, easy-to-understand doctrines, and even suggestions for prayer. Learning more and more about God each day will help you deepen your relationship with Him.
You gain a deeper understanding of the Bible
The Bible is a long and complex work, but no other book is filled with so much life-giving truth and teaching. Attempting to study large portions of the Bible at once, or just visiting its pages occasionally, will never lead you to a deep understanding. It takes both time and dedication to study God’s Word. The more time you spend studying and thinking about it, the better you will understand its message. Just like in school, the best way to learn is every day.
You begin to apply the teachings of the Bible
One of my favorite devotionals (besides Today) is Jesus Calling by Sarah Young. She took the time to listen to God and write down what she thought He was saying. This approach created a personal devotional that reads as if God were speaking directly to you. One of the things I like most about it was how easy it was to apply the different lessons to my daily life. Doing these devotions helped shape my daily worldview. Recently, Today published a more narrative month of sanctification devotionals. I suggest you check out Becoming More Holy: The Story of Ron. Read through the month and find out how it can help you apply God’s teachings in your life.
you find peace
Perhaps the most immediate benefit of devotion is a sense of peace. At times we all feel hopeless, overwhelmed, anxious, or lonely. Reading a daily devotional that is applicable to your situation can bring much-needed peace from God. Hearing of God’s grace and love for you is something you can always find comfort in. Devotions help us to remember that no matter what happens in the world, God is in control of everything.
Yes, daily devotions may seem daunting, but the benefits are worth it. If you are looking for opportunities to grow spiritually and find comfort in a relationship with God, make an effort to read daily devotionals.

The Word Before Work by Jordan Raynor
1. Keep your Bible and prayer journal nearby
Bibles and prayer are essential tools in your Christian journey. These items should always be easily accessible so that you can record your prayers or read scriptures whenever you have a free moment. If possible, consider putting a miniature Bible in your purse or downloading a Bible or prayer app to your phone. If you’re stuck in line or in the waiting room, ditch Facebook and read your Bible instead. Who knows, it might even remind you to have patience and be thankful for slowing down in your routine.
2. Make time for prayer
Whether you use a planner or smartphone app to block out time for work, school, and other necessities, you should also set aside a specific time each day for prayer. This time should be entered into your planner or recorded on your phone, ideally with an alarm to remind you it’s time to start. By setting aside time for prayer, you are telling yourself that it is an important part of your day. Conversely, a careless approach to prayer allows you to justify yourself when you keep forgetting to pray.
3. Join a prayer group
If you’re finding it difficult to hold yourself accountable, consider starting a prayer group or joining an existing one. This group can commit to addressing a variety of concerns, including current events and issues in members’ personal lives. By praying together, members of your group will form strong bonds, which can prove helpful when things get difficult. If joining an in-person prayer group is proving difficult, consider joining an online group. Many forums and chat rooms are available to Christians looking for like-minded people who make a regular commitment to prayer. The online version can often prove more convenient with busy schedules.
4. Commit to praying with your roommate or significant other
Another great way to build accountability into your routine is to commit to a daily prayer session with your roommate, significant other, or friend. This prayer session doesn’t have to be long; five to ten minutes immediately after waking up and before bed. Praying with a roommate is the perfect way to strengthen your relationship with each other and with God. Likewise, your relationship with your girlfriend, boyfriend, fiancé or spouse will benefit greatly from prayer sessions together.
5. Practice your faith at work
Balancing work and school is a struggle in itself, so including prayer in the mix may seem impossible. While other students at a Christ-centered university are bound to respond enthusiastically to prayer, it can be a more sensitive issue in the workplace. However, it is possible to let your faith guide you in your work. As stated in Peter 4:10, “Each of you should use whatever gift he has received to serve others as faithful stewards of God’s grace in various forms.” Think carefully about this, as do your day-to-day duties Help you serve Christ and strive to always be a good example of His love.
6. Remember to pray before meals
One of the easiest ways to incorporate prayer into your routine is to make a habit of praying at every meal. You can do this even if your diners choose to forgo a pre-meal blessing. Just pause before you eat to thank God for the meal you are about to eat while acknowledging the hard work of everyone who made your meal possible.
Integrating faith into everyday life does not have to be a challenge. All it takes is a commitment to strengthening your relationship with God. No two Christians practice their faith exactly the same way, so find a routine that works for you – and stick to it.

How do you structure a devotional?
The best devotionals focus on a single point. Use 100-200 words to illustrate the point: a personal story, an anecdote, a conversation, a statistic, an object lesson, an interesting fact, a pithy quote, a question, or other engaging means.
The Word Before Work by Jordan Raynor
Use a 3 piece structure
As you learn to write devotionals, you will find that most of them follow a standard three-part structure.
Each of the three parts of a devotion has a special function.
Scripture: A short passage from the Bible forms the basis of the devotional. It communicates a principle that is also affirmed elsewhere in Scripture. The illustration: The body of devotion, which represents an authentic life situation and connects it with the principle. The Takeaway: This element, also called an “application,” gives the reader a thought to ponder, a prayer to pray, or an action to take in order to apply the biblical principle of devotion.
Why does the 3-part structure work?
It’s easy
You’ve probably heard of “The Rule of Three,” in which three is a cornerstone structural number. The human mind is trained to process information in patterns.
Three is the smallest number by which we can organize information in our heads. Therefore, in eighth grade, one learns language skills, how to write an essay with an introduction, three points, and a conclusion. Pastors use a standard approach to biblical teaching in the form of a 3-point sermon.
So when thinking about how to write a devotional, use a simple three-part structure. The message of devotion sticks more easily in the memory of the reader.
It is logical
Devotions relate Bible truth to real life. What better way to structure a devotional than to present a Bible verse, an example of how it was lived, and then a way to apply it? The three-step process makes sense.
How to write devotionals:
More about each of the 3 parts
The font
The most effective devotionals use a short scripture, usually 25 words or less. More than that will be too long for a reader to comprehend. Longer passages can muddy the water and make it harder for you to extract that one point you’re trying to make.
The illustration
The best devotions focus on a single point. Use 100-200 words to illustrate the point: a personal story, anecdote, conversation, statistic, lesson, interesting fact, succinct quote, question, or other appealing means. (More on different types of illustrations.) You can even point out something interesting about the passage itself or provide a retelling that offers a different insight. Conclusion: Use the illustration to connect Bible principle to real life.
take that away
This element challenges you to apply and live the lesson of devotion—the point. A good snack gives you an opportunity to live differently as a result of reading the devotional.

How do you publish a devotional book?
- Pray and ask God for direction.
- Choose a Format to Present Devotional.
- Target Audience.
- Keep it short and simple yet impactful.
- Build an author platform.
- Research steps for publishing your devotional.
- Decide when you will launch your devotional.
The Word Before Work by Jordan Raynor
Devotional writers should have a pure heart and right motive (James 3:8-11).
Here are ten steps to writing and publishing a devotional:
brainstorming
Brainstorm topics that people are always asking you for help with or that you are most passionate about. You cannot write a devotional or do anything related to inspire others if you do not know what you are sharing. Do people admire your trust in Christ, your devotion to prayer, or your cheerful personality? Think about it, write about it.
2. Pray and ask God for guidance
Nothing is worth relying on your own understanding. You may even miss the mark and what God is directing you to because you have failed to talk to Him about His desire for the direction of the devotional that you are going to write – you most likely will. As a Kingdom author, remember that you do everything for the glory of God, which means that His leading is more important than your preferences. Pray about it.
3. Research the topic
Research scriptures that relate to the topic you are going to write about. You want to give readers the best of what you can offer, and research complements what you offer. Regardless of how easy you find the topic or how much you’re certain you already know, may humility take its course, there’s no harm in research.
4. Choose a format for presenting the devotional
Choose how to write, format, and present your devotional for the purpose of your audience. Remember, don’t just write, write and remember your audience — make sure everything you write is appropriate for your audience.
5. Target Audience
Decide on your target audience, it will help a lot. Knowing your audience can give you an idea of what your writing style should be, what colors and images you should use, and even what font to use when writing your devotional. Not to mention that knowing your audience will help you understand how to market the devotional.
6. Wait to edit
Start writing your devotional without editing. Writing and editing at the same time can often lead to overthinking. Overthinking can result in overwriting, signing, or not writing at all. Wait until you have completed your work and then edit it. Sometimes writing and editing at the same time can stifle your creativity.
7. Keep it short and simple, but effective
Worship doesn’t have to be part of it, once something is breathed in from God it will have an effect.
6. Create an author platform
As a writer, build a platform for yourself on platforms where your audience is. Share your content, share who you are.
9. Research steps to publicize your devotional
Do you have a strategy you use when writing a devotional? Not just a step-by-step process in your writing, but an order of how you want your message delivered to your audience.
10. Decide when to start your devotional
Deciding when to begin your worship is critical. It will help you plan properly and execute well for the success of your book.

How do you format a devotional book?
The basic format calls for a suggested passage of Scripture (usually 5 to 12 verses), a title, one printed-out specific verse from the suggested reading, and an anecdote or story that shows how that biblical lesson applies today.

Devotional books appear thematically on:
teenagers
men
Women
grandparents
college students
veterans
teacher
athletes
And pretty much every other ethnic group you can think of
Devotionals are used by a variety of media, including high circulation daily devotional guides such as The Quiet Hour, The Upper Room, The Secret Place, The Word in Season, Devozine, Pathways to God, and Wesleyan Church (These links will take you to the Submission Guidelines.)
More than 25 devotional quarters publish 365 new entries each year. Of course, these need fresh material every year.
Publishers of vacation Bible school and Sunday school materials often include devotionals for teachers and students. Many independent and denominational magazines (such as The War Cry and The Baptist Bulletin) conduct devotions in each of their issues.
Some publishers produce not only devotional books, but also devotional desk calendars and greeting cards.
This market also needs to be replenished annually. Publications cannot simply recycle devotions they conducted in the previous year. They depend on freelance writers to provide hundreds and hundreds of fresh, insightful new ones.
What you should bring with you
Devotional writers should have a pure heart (James 3:8-11). With humility, kindness, and spiritual sensitivity, you can create something that can transform a reader’s thinking and behavior.
They also need a focused mind (Ps. 1:1-3; 73:28). A concise and powerful message needs to be reduced to 150-175 words. This requires clarity.
And you must have a burning desire (Jeremiah 20:9). Ask for God’s guidance to say the right words to someone who may be reading a devotional that will be published a year after you write it.
God is the Alpha, but He is also the Omega. He knows what pains and needs people will have in the future, and He can use you to prepare materials today to help people in difficult times tomorrow.
You will not get rich by writing devotionals. In fact, you might have to write half a dozen to see more than $100. That’s why it’s important to write them in batches to make it worthwhile for you – not that you’re just doing it for the money.
You can rework and resell your printed devotionals as radio devotionals for about the same fee. And you can collect your devotionals and publish them as a book and receive an advance payment and royalties.
But aside from the pay, you can also enjoy the deep gratification when readers tell you that your words have changed their minds about having an abortion, suicide, or divorce.
Meet readers where they are
People turn to devotions to satisfy deep needs. Some have lost friendships, been divorced, suffered criticism, betrayal, or the death of a loved one. They need the balm of God’s comfort.
Others seek closeness to God. Their prayer life is slack, their testimonies weak, and their church attendance sporadic. You have to find the way back to Jesus.
Some just want to grow spiritually or find a better way to share their faith. Their devotion may be their only connection to the Bible throughout the day.
A harried mother might read one just before bed.
A busy teacher can read you during lunch.
An executive can read one during breakfast.
The writing method
If you choose a scripture as your anchor text, read it in different translations. Pray and meditate on this until you are sure you understand the verse in context.
Stay relevant by offering an illustration that today’s reader can relate to. Connect modern challenges and questions to long-standing solutions from God’s Word – and make the connections obvious and logical.

The stuff of a good prayer
Your reader gives you a few minutes, and in return you must provide compelling copy that offers new insights. Be sincere and honest, not cocky or admonishing.
Good devotional writings say, “Walk with me for a few minutes. Investigate something with me.”
Keep your style appropriate for your audience. Writing devotionals for teenagers is not the same as writing for seniors.
Although your anecdotes and illustrations should be drawn from your own life, the lessons should always be drawn from Scripture.
Present God’s wisdom in a package your reader can identify with.
Stick to tangible images, things the reader can see, touch, smell, hear, and taste.
Be specific but concise. Make every word count.
Use visual nouns, expressive verbs, short sentences and active voice.
Five basic patterns
Learn these and you can use them immediately:
1. The self-examination
Draw on personal experiences and use anecdotes to draw valuable lessons. Such devotions often begin with:
“When I was in high school…”
“When I was fishing alone one morning…”
“In my first year at camp…”
The remembrance always has a moral or application that ties in with the scripture chosen.
2. Reports from an external observer
Here you tell what happened to someone else. Real names may be used or changed with permission as long as the story is true.
Often these devotions begin with a sentence like:
“When my great-grandmother first came to America…”
“My best friend just got his driver’s license…”
“Most people don’t know that George Washington…”
3. You interact with other people
Share something you learned from a friend, colleague, or family member. Start with a sentence like:
“My son taught me a lesson one day when I was taking him to school…”
“My boyfriend could always make me laugh…”
“One day my college history professor told me…”
4. The observation lesson
Use a tangible object to parallelize an event or circumstance. Jesus often used this format, using things like a mustard seed, a Roman coin, a lamp, and a bushel or tower as metaphors.
Object lesson devotionals quickly help the reader see the parallel between the subject and the lesson. “Trees killed by salt water brought in by a tsunami will still stand tall and take up space, but they will not bear fruit. People who come to church every Sunday and take a pew but do nothing all week to share their faith are like those trees.”
5. The double meaning phrase
Take a familiar line from an advertisement, story, song, or poem and turn it into a Christian message, like “A day without sonshine is a gloomy day.”
One devotional writer compared the strict discipline of being a U.S. Marine to the discipline Christians should adhere to, calling the devotional “Corps Values vs. core values”.
Development of a devotional diary
Because much of what we observe and say has the potential to become material for a devotional, keep a journal of ideas, thoughts, and feelings. Start today by answering:
Has God used a specific Bible verse to change your life? How has it affected your prospects?
Has God brought a person into your life to change your direction? How did someone like Philip with the Ethiopian eunuch suddenly enter your life as a teacher, friend, mentor or leader?
When has God shown himself to you in dramatic ways? Have you received an answered prayer regarding a health issue, financial need, or spiritual awakening that has proven it to be working in your life? Note the details.
Has God ever rebuked you and straightened you out when you were spiritually wayward? Explain how you felt God’s chastening and correcting hand.
Has God used a deep pain in your life to make you sensitive to others or to show you new ways to be effective for those you serve?
As you answer these questions, you will discover that your life is a source of great lessons to share.
Brainstorm for more devotional topics
As you make entries in your devotional journal each day, try to remember:
A sad or funny experience you had in the past year
Things you learned while traveling
Challenging relationships with people at work, home, or school
Something you are an expert at
An article in a newspaper or magazine that intrigued you
An editorial or column that you strongly disagree with
An unusual experience or new challenge you have recently faced
An opinion based on years of experience
Something surprising or insightful you recently learned from TV or a book
A new perspective gained through a sermon
Social trends that concern you
An event that restored your faith in humanity
Something related to science, nature, weather, or time that amazed you
A trip to a museum that sparked a new appreciation for nature
A new job that has challenged you
A family picnic or class reunion that gave you a special perspective
Letters or journals you recently discovered
A poem or song that keeps coming to my mind
Volunteering that helped you see the suffering of others
A friend’s illness or accident that alerted you
Avoid blind spots
Although certain publications use devotionals aimed at teenagers, working women, or seniors, most of the devotionals you write will be read by a broad spectrum. So remember:
People live in many different financial and social circumstances.
The different beliefs of many denominations and theological traditions are valuable to people and must be respected.
Some readers have limited education. So keep things simple but not condescending.
People in other countries may not understand your slang and pop culture references.
It is usually better not to write devotionals that cause controversy. So avoid topics like infant baptism, ordination of women, or speaking in tongues.
The basic format
Before submitting a devotional, obtain the Guidelines for Authors of a Publication and copies of the publication itself. Follow the guidelines closely.
Your name, address and phone number should appear on every page. However, some publications also ask for your e-mail address.
The basic format requires a suggested scripture (usually 5 to 12 verses), a title, a printed specific verse from the suggested reading, and an anecdote or story that shows how that Bible lesson applies today.
The author’s byline usually appears at the end.
Some publications require that you begin or end with a prayer or thought for the day.
Length varies, from as short as 75 words to as long as 225.
The guidelines indicate the preferred method of submission.
Some editors like hard copies to be sent to the publication office. Some like email delivery. Some accept both.
Most publications buy first rights, which is important because you can then reuse your devotions in books.
summary
Devotional writing is a great way to get into nonfiction writing, make money, and have a positive impact on thousands of readers. Your experiences and those of others are rich sources of ideas.

Then list what aspects of spiritual growth could result from each of these experiences (learning to pray more effectively, learning to share the good news with others, developing humility, etc.).
2) Start a devotional journal.
3) Try writing a one-page devotional and submit it to one of the devotional markets listed in The Christian Writer’s Market Guide.

Jewish Guide to Morning Prayer
Morning prayer is a Jewish culture that has been around for ages and shows no signs of disappearing any time soon.
Fashion Ani
Traditionally, Jews begin each day with a short two-line prayer called Modeh Ani, which refers to God as the only living king.
Usually, prayer is a reflection of death because it is believed that the soul leaves the body to spend the night with God. It is a prayer of thanksgiving to God for bringing the soul back into the body and letting the individual see for another day.
This Jewish prayer is said first thing in the morning when a person wakes up and is still in bed. And that is why God’s proper name Adonai is not used in this prayer. The Jews believe that it is inappropriate to pronounce the name of God before ritually washing one’s hands.
Perhaps someone has touched some unclean things during the night because he is unaware of it and therefore needs to wash it off before praying to God after getting up; and pouring water from a cup over their hands two or three times in a row.
Here is an example of a Jewish morning prayer to guide your day:
Modeh Ani Lefanecha
Melech Chai Vekayom
Shehechezarta Bi Nishmati
Bechemla
Raba Emunakha
English:
I thank you,
living and eternal king,
for you have graciously restored my soul to me;
Your loyalty is great.
Simple images for morning prayers, quotes
This is a very typical example of a prayer to say in the morning for yourself, your family and loved ones.
I’ve condensed this morning prayer from Psalm 91 into a beautiful quote that you can use to say blessings and protection for your day:
Because I dwell in the secret place of the Most High, I will remain under the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord: He is my refuge and my stronghold: my God; I trust in him.
Verily, he will deliver you from the fowler’s snare and from the troublesome plague.
He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you shall trust: His truth will be your shield and shield.
You shall not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day;
Nor for the plague that walks in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasted at noon.
A thousand fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right; but let it not come near you.
Only with my eyes shall you see and see the reward of the ungodly.
For you have made the Lord, who is my refuge, Most High, your dwelling place;
No calamity shall come to me, and no plague shall come near my dwelling place.
He will give His angels command over me to protect you in all my ways.

Psalm 25:5
Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior and my hope is in you all day.

What are Devotions: 5 Devotional Examples to Grow Your Faith
Split

If you have been in Christian Protestant (and especially evangelical) circles for any length of time, you may hear the word “devotions” or the phrases “quiet time” or “daily devotions”. Most Christians use these terms to refer to the time they spend in prayer, Bible reading, meditating, and often journaling. This is the time a follower of God takes to strengthen their faith by spending time with God.
What does it mean to engage in daily devotions?
“Doing devotions” simply means when you begin to build a practice of meeting with G-do regularly into your life. What that means specifically is as diverse and unique as the people of faith who practice it.
A person may simply pray and meditate on a single verse of Scripture. Another can do a thorough Bible study with colored pencils and notes and Bible concordances. Yet another Christ follower can use a journal Bible to create a beautiful creative work of art. Someone else may say, “I met God today as I walked.”
There really is no wrong way to “do devotions” as long as you connect with God.
What Does the Bible Say About Daily Devotion?
You won’t find the words “devotion or quiet time” in the Bible, but the theme of regular encounters with God runs throughout the Bible.
Psalm 42:2 “My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?” Mark 1:35 “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up and left the house and went to a lonely place where he was praying.” Colossians 4:2 “Pray, watch and give thanks.”
Although Bible study is a big part of encountering God today, remember that at the time the Bible was written and for much of human history, followers of God did not have access to a Bible to take home read. So much of the encounter with God was through prayer and meditation on memorized portions of the Bible, and reading the Scriptures was a shared event.
What an amazing gift we have in the 21st century to have not just one, but literally hundreds of versions of Bibles, study notes, and helpful books to help us grow in our faith – many of which can be added to ours in just a few minutes Smart devices will be called a few seconds. Stunning!
What is a devotional?
Unlike devotionals, a devotional is a book designed to help guide your time with God. So in your devotions you can read a devotional, but you don’t have to.
Many devotionals contain scriptures and also the explanation of the author of the passage or spiritual encouragement. Many of them last a whole year and can be repeated many times. Some build on each other, but many you can join at any time and still have the same impact.
5 of my favorite devotionals to strengthen your faith
100 Days to Brave — Short, uplifting bites that encourage courage in your everyday moments. This devotional actually led us to move to Indiana!
New Morning Mercies – A little longer but full of great wisdom! I like this one because it has additional Bible verses for you to study if you want to dig deeper.
Jesus Calling – A Great Thing for Those New to the Faith! Beautifully written as if Jesus were speaking directly to you.
Grace for the Moment – One of the first devotionals I read. Simple and encouraging place to start growing your faith.
Letters to the Thirsty – Written like a letter from a spiritual mentor.
Examples of devotions
One of my favorite questions I’ve asked my Christian friends lately has been: What do you do during your worship or time with God? I love seeing the variety of answers and how God treats each of His children in a unique way!
I was also encouraged by the realization “I’m not the only one”. I’m not the only one who likes to sit quietly, I’m not the only one who likes to walk and talk to God, I’m not the only one who writes down her prayers.
I hope you will consider these devotional examples to be descriptive rather than prescriptive. You don’t have to try to replicate exactly everything someone else is doing, but you can have the freedom to follow the Spirit’s leading and grace when you’re making devotions imperfect.
My example for short devotions or quiet time:
Open up in prayer and ask God to speak to me and pour out all worries, concerns and events. Read from 100 Days to Brave.
Ask myself, “What does this mean for me today?” Close in prayer for any special needs I have. Turn on the worship music as I head to my next thing of the day, be it washing dishes, showering, or commuting to work.
(This would probably take 10 minutes or less.)
My example for longer devotions or quiet time:
Open up in prayer and ask God to speak to me and pour out all worries, concerns and events. Read the daily “assignment” from The Bible Project, a reading plan for the Bible in a year. Write notes, questions, or “aha moments” in the margin of my journal Bible or journal. Listen to the accompanying podcast. Use my journal to answer prayer and write down my thoughts. Conclude with prayer and listen/sing to the worship music.
(This would probably take 20 minutes or more.)
Example of Ally’s devotions:
Six days a week I go to a quiet place to meet with the Lord, and on the seventh day I rest longer. I often wake up from my alarm clock, but sometimes it wakes me up and invites me over early. These are the best days.
For the last year I’ve asked God to give me a supernatural hunger for His Word and He has filled me! Typically, our time together begins with a conversation. I write down my praises and prayers and ask him to let me see his character as I search his word. Then I move on to reading through the chronological Bible of Scripture, followed by a daily podcast called The Bible Recap that covers that day’s reading. As I read, I write down how I see his character and goodness and all the promises he makes to his people and to any specific people in the Bible.
Throughout the day I seek His Spirit, His voice, to see how He wants our day to unfold. I try to return regularly to His voice and His presence directing our steps, and if the day permits I try to sneak away with Him in the afternoon to read more by human authors about who He is and what He is about lives of others has done believers.
Finally, a couple of times a week in the evenings, I try to go deep into a book of the Bible through inductive study. Daily Grace Co. has some excellent studies to help with this process and they’re nice to look at too 🥰 . Matthew 5:6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
Example of Kim’s devotions:
My morning time with God begins with curling up in front of the fireplace with a blanket and coffee. It’s my place. ❤️
I’m currently working my way through Job with the Bible Recap podcast. I read the daily scripture first and then listen to the synopsis, it’s easy and straight forward.
Some mornings I start with that, other mornings I stare into the fire and just think. I don’t have a lot of mental space during the day, so I just let my mind wander, linger and land on what it needs. As a “thinker and feeler” it was important to me this time to present my inner thoughts to the Lord, to talk to him and to process life together. Sometimes I fight, sometimes I cry, sometimes I just sit and know that He is with me, silently strengthening me for the day ahead.
I also enjoyed My Heart, Ever His: Prayers for Women by Barbara Rainey and will read a prayer before engaging with the scriptures, or sometimes as the only meditation of the morning.
Worship music also plays a big part in my daily focus on the Lord. In the car, getting ready in the morning, doing laundry, cooking dinner, etc., it’s my little “pick-me-up” and helps me focus my thoughts on Him in the midst of seemingly mundane tasks.
Example of Bethany’s devotions:
As a young adult, I fell in love with inductive Bible studies. I choose a book of the Bible to go through, print it out without chapter titles or headings, and go through it piece by piece, coding and tagging key words so I can see patterns and other observations in the Word. Sometimes I use a book from the Kay Arthur New Inductive Study Series as a guide. I’m reviewing Psalm 119 with my church family right now.
This year I also tried something new and bought a chronological Bible. I go back and forth chronologically between inductive study and reading through the Bible. I enjoyed seeing the different books and passages mesh together in ‘real time’.
When it comes to prayer, my attention span is about the length of a toddler at Disney World. 🤷🏻♀️ I’ve found that if I want to have an intentional conversation with God, I have to write it down. Journaling allows me to be intentional in my prayers. I use this space to process what I’m studying in the Bible and to bring the things that are going on in my life to the Lord.
I am working on being less all or nothing in my time with the Lord. When I’m having a busy morning or don’t manage my time well and don’t have enough time for my routine, I tend to skip it altogether. I am working on remembering that my time with the Lord is not about my routine but about my heart’s intentions. Rocking out some worship music during a run or going for a walk and enjoying the sunset have been some of my most unexpectedly intimate times with God!
Other sources for quiet time and Bible study:
The Bible Recap: It was absolutely NOT intended that 3/4 of us mentioned using The Bible Recap. It’s a Bible plan in the Youversion Bible App with a daily podcast to help explain the reading. There’s also a book summarizing the daily podcast if you prefer the written word to the audio!
Bible Study Resources: Love this huge list of other resources for digging in the Bible and strengthening your faith.
Inductive Bible Study: I’d love to do a post on this type of Bible study soon, but until then, this book that Bethany referenced is a great read and this post gives a nice overview!
The Claiming the Promises Bible Study: This immersive, dedicated Bible study includes a worship playlist to accompany each day of study.
What happens if you miss a day?
nothing friend
You connect to God in a different way throughout the day and try again tomorrow.
There is no devotional police. God is no less in love with you than on the days you spend long with him. His love is unconditional and has nothing to do with your performance.
I have extended devotionals probably 5 times a week. Sometimes I wake up late and don’t have time for my time with God, but I listen to worship music to realign my faith as I prepare for my day. Generally, once a week I try to go for a long walk without music or podcasts and just think and talk to God.
A daily prayer time is the key to growing your faith. The more time you spend with God, the more your relationship will grow, your trust will deepen, and the more beautiful your time together will be.
Do you have a daily devotional practice? Tell us in the comments what your time with God is like!
