Combination skin is a skin type that is both oily and dry. People generally find their skin oily in the T-zone of their face and the rest of the area. Forehead, nose and chin are the three areas that tend to be oily, while cheeks and jawline tend to be dry. If you notice oiliness and dryness in the above areas, you have combination skin.

According to the needs and necessities of women, several types of foundations are introduced in the market. After analyzing your skin type, make sure you choose the most suitable foundation for your combination skin.

1. Serum Foundation: The serum foundation contains a serum in its ingredient list. It has a liquid-like texture and a serum-like formula that blends seamlessly into your skin. It is a perfect makeup product with skin conditioning properties.

2. Liquid Foundation: For a streak-free finish, liquid foundation is a makeup product that you must choose. They are enriched with SPF and moisturizing agents to leave your skin soft and supple.

3. Powder Foundation: It helps to mattify your face and gives your skin an airbrushed effect. If you want to lighten the makeup base, a powder foundation is for you.

4. Foundation Sticks: Foundation sticks are valued for their blendability. They will help you achieve an even and even natural makeup base.

5. Cream Foundation: Cream foundations have a thick texture. For an even finish and good coverage, a cream foundation is just what you need.

6. Mousse Foundation: As the name suggests, mousse is neither too thick nor too runny. It has a perfect consistency, is airy and light.

Any foundation should be a natural looking foundation. A luminous foundation or a matte finish foundation are the two main categories to choose from depending on your skin tone, quality and texture.

Each sumptuous bottle of Orchidée Impériale The Foundation Concentrate by Guerlain contains 30ml of luxury liquid foundation. Offering smooth and even coverage, this product covers imperfections without forming cakey lumps.

It might not come in a huge range of colors, but if your skin tone matches one of its shades, you’ll be delighted. Finally, this foundation brightens skin, reduces the appearance of wrinkles and glides on smoothly for full coverage in just a few drops.

But this liquid foundation costs $162, which is more expensive than many of the world’s most expensive lipsticks!

Why it’s expensive

Guerlain has been making quality cosmetics since 1828, making it one of the oldest active cosmetic brands in the world. As a result, its reputation as one of the best makeup and skincare providers dates back more than a century!

This brand awareness allows Guerlain to set above-average prices. Import duties also add to the high cost of Guerlain liquid foundations as these products are imported from France.

9. Serge Lutens Compact Foundation – $175

Serge Lutens Compact Foundation could be a fantastic choice if you are looking for a classically elegant powder foundation. The sleek black case is understated and understated, and the pressed powder is interchangeable.

With ten skin-matching shades to choose from, this powder is one of the most tolerable. And unlike cheaper powder foundations, this option leaves no sticky residue.

Instead, it leaves your skin looking and feeling smooth, silky and absolutely flawless. Even so, each case costs $175.

While purchasing replacement powder squares can save you some money over time, the initial investment is comparatively high.

Why it’s expensive

This is designer makeup, so it’s only natural that it has a designer-level price tag! But the quality of this powder foundation is why it’s so expensive. Few powders offer the level of seamless and even coverage that this product offers.

8. Valmont Poudre de Teint Précieuse – $185

Although La Maison Valmont is known for making some of the most expensive liquid foundations, this Swiss brand also offers exquisite powder foundations. Their Poudre de Teint Précieuse is perhaps the highest quality of these powders, and it’s undoubtedly the most expensive.

Each .35 ounce container costs $185. It contains a square of powder foundation, an elegant sponge for application and a wide mirror. Although compact enough to fit in a purse or purse, this powder foundation would look stunning on any bureau or vanity.

Why it’s expensive

This foundation offers even coverage, with or without a liquid foundation base. It lightens and never clumps, resulting in a smooth texture imperceptible to the naked eye.

When you wear this foundation, your natural beauty is allowed to shine through. This is difficult to achieve, especially with a powder. And with ingredients like olive squalene (essentially olive oil), this product can rejuvenate and nourish dry skin.

Those looking to achieve a flawless look with a powder foundation may struggle to find better quality results than those offered by this product. As such, it’s an expensive option.

7. Sisley-Paris Sisleÿa Le Teint – $195

French luxury cosmetics often cost a pretty penny. This is partly because they are imported products and partly because of the impeccable reputation of well-established French cosmetics brands.

Sisley-Paris is a fantastic example with half a century of fine cosmetic manufacturing experience. Her liquid anti-aging foundation Sisleÿa Le Teint is one of her most expensive products, selling for $195 per 30ml tube.

Each shade consists of a laundry list of ingredients, including many natural plant extracts. But is that the main reason why this is one of the most expensive anti aging foundations?

Why it’s expensive

Import charges play a small role in the price of this product. But the reputation and quality of the ingredients might be the real reasons this liquid foundation is so expensive.

Sisley-Paris has established itself as a trusted supplier of luxury cosmetics. Their primary focus is on anti-aging makeup and skincare products, making them popular with adult, middle-aged, and retirement buyers.

Because Sisley-Paris products are always in demand, prices are unlikely to fall anytime soon.

6. Valmont l’Elixir des Glaciers Teint Majestueux – $220

La Maison Valmont’s l’Elixir des Glaciers collection consists of some of the most expensive foundations in the world. Teint Majestueux (literally majestic complexion) is no exception.

This liquid foundation comes in shades ranging from pale porcelain to sandy beige tan and has a satin finish. It can bring dry skin to life and give it a natural, healthy glow.

Each 30ml bottle of Teint Majestueux costs $220, a far cry from the $15 options available at your local beauty salon.

Nevertheless, this liquid foundation is available in skin-friendly shades. Consider investing in some of the most expensive nail polishes in the world to complete your look!

Why it’s expensive

The main reasons for this liquid foundation’s price tag of over $200 are the import costs and the high-quality ingredients. Finally, this foundation contains liposome RNA to keep skin healthy and supple.

It’s also brimming with triple regenerative DNA. These ingredients make it one of the most effective anti-aging liquid foundations. Since anti-aging cosmetics are in high demand, the prices for such foundations are almost always above average.

5. La Prairie Skin Caviar Essence-In-Foundation – $235

The Skin Caviar foundation line from Swiss cosmetics brand La Prairie consists of some of the most expensive products, including the Skin Caviar Essence-In-Foundation.

Well, at first glance, this foundation might look like a powder. But it’s a liquid foundation in a sleek, round snap-on case (mirror included).

This remarkable packaging makes it easier to apply the perfect amount of foundation without producing wasted droplets. Each container costs $235, making this liquid foundation one of the most expensive in the world.

However, it is not the most expensive Skin Caviar product.

Why it’s expensive

What happens when you infuse skin care products and cosmetics with caviar extract? You get an expensive product that you can sell for hundreds of dollars!

Not only does this liquid foundation contain caviar water, but it also helps protect your skin from UV damage. It has an SPF of 25, making it an excellent choice for those looking to hide blemishes while reducing future symptoms of sun damage.

4. La Prairie Skin Caviar Powder Foundation – $245

La Prairie’s Skin Caviar Powder Foundation is $10 more than the last Skin Caviar Foundation and is a fantastic concealer setting product. It’s also a worthwhile alternative to liquid options, especially for those with oily skin.

But at $245 per container, it’s one of the most expensive foundations available. Still, each snap case comes with a handy mirror for touch-ups on the go.

After indulging in the gorgeously smooth feel of this powder foundation, why not spritz on one of the world’s most expensive perfumes? This can help you look, smell and feel like a million bucks!

Why it’s expensive

Like other La Prairie Skin Caviar products, this foundation is expensive due to its premium ingredients (including caviar extract). In addition, it is an import product from Switzerland, which also contributes to the high price.

Finally, there is the issue of compatibility. While only some skin types are compatible with liquid foundations, almost every skin type pairs well with powder foundations.

3. Clé de Peau Beaute The Foundation – $250

Photo source: Clé de Peau Beaute

You’ll be forgiven for thinking this tiny jar of foundation is a beautiful jewel. Its lustrous, faceted case and reflective lid resemble a gigantic diamond set with gold. But the real magic is in this opulent looking container.

This liquid foundation offers sheer coverage that’s never sticky. It’s essentially an airbrushed finish in a jar.

Ingredients include vitamin E (for healthier skin), chai hu extract (an anti-inflammatory), and hyaluronic acid (to reduce the appearance of wrinkles). So not only does this foundation help cover unsightly areas, it can also reduce their appearance long after you’ve removed the product.

Still, a single 27ml container costs $250, far more expensive than the average liquid foundation.

Why it’s expensive

Clé de Peau Beauté’s foundation is expensive because it’s made of quality ingredients. These components moisturize and rejuvenate the skin, making this a natural choice for those looking to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and blemishes.

This foundation not only helps you to achieve a fresh, even skin tone, but also offers a certain level of UV protection. However, these qualities are not the only reasons for the incredible price of this product.

Branding also has an impact as Clé de Peau Beauté is Japan’s top luxury cosmetics brand. As you might have guessed, this also means that every container is imported from The Foundation, increasing the cost.

2. La Prairie Skin Caviar Concealer + Foundation – $275

Applying makeup can be time consuming, especially if you use concealer. Luckily, some foundations include concealer, which shortens your routine and makes the application process a hassle-free affair.

La Prairie Skin Caviar Concealer + Foundation offers the same high-quality coverage as their powder products. But thanks to its liquid state and added concealer, it’s a practical alternative to powders.

However, it’s also more expensive, costing $275 per 30ml bottle. Still, that price could well be worth it, especially when you consider the added SPF protection.

Why it’s expensive

Foundations that serve multiple purposes tend to be more expensive than simpler, single-purpose options. This product acts as a concealer, foundation and mild sunscreen!

It also contains caviar extract, making it a luxurious alternative to traditional store-bought foundations. And unlike other high-priced foundations, this item comes in over a dozen skin-friendly shades.

Overall, it’s a challenge to find a higher quality multipurpose foundation that is more compatible. However, this is not the most expensive option.

1. Valmont l’Elixir des Glaciers Teint Precieux Votre Visage – $280

The most expensive foundation in the world is l’Elixir des Glaciers Teint Precieux Votre Visage by Valmont. This expensive liquid foundation is another high quality foundation from the Swiss brand.

This premium foundation comes in four shades ranging from Light (Ivory in Shanghai) to Tan (Amber Beige in Florence) and retails for $280 per 30ml bottle. Marketed as an effective anti-aging beauty product, it contains skin-soothing ingredients like sea buckthorn and echinacea (coneflower).

But is the hype really worth the high price?

Why it’s expensive

There are a few reasons why this foundation is priced close to $300. First, it is an imported product from Switzerland. Imported products are always more expensive than domestic ones due to transportation costs and import duties.

Second, this foundation has an excellent reputation as one of the most effective anti-aging liquid foundations on the market. Its exceptional ingredients, including skin-healing liposome RNA, don’t come cheap.

Plus, you only need a few drops of this foundation for full coverage. These properties make La Maison Valmont l’Elixir des Glaciers Teint Precieux Votre Visage an expensive product.

Where are the most expensive foundations sold?

If you want to experience the soft feel and exceptional coverage of one of these premium foundations, you won’t want to visit your local department store. That’s because some of the world’s most expensive foundations are only available in luxury department stores, such as:

Sak’s Fifth Avenue

Neiman Markus

Harrods

mountain village of Gutmann

Luckily, you don’t have to stop by in person to snag the most expensive foundations. You can order online instead. In some cases you can also order the foundation directly from the manufacturer (e.g. Valmont, La Prairie, Clé de Peau Beauté).

Therefore, investing in the most luxurious and premium makeup has never been easier!

What is the most expensive foundation in the world?

If you want to try the world’s most expensive foundation, you should choose Valmont’s l’Elixir des Glaciers Teint Precieux Votre Visage. This liquid foundation is available in small 30ml containers and four different shades.

This foundation promises to be one of the most rejuvenating beauty products around with ingredients like sea buckthorn, echinacea (coneflower) and rosa moschata (musk rose). But of course, the only way to know if Valmont’s claims are valid is to try this foundation for yourself!

A foundation can make or break your entire makeup routine. It forms the basis for everything that comes after it. If you don’t choose the right color for your skin tone or the best option for your skin type, you won’t love the look. Don’t worry, I’m here to help! I’m sharing the best of the best clean foundations, having tried numerous brands over the last almost 10 years and I’ve narrowed it down to just 9 foundations. As we know that application is key, I also share all the tips and tricks on how to prep your skin and apply to get the most natural look possible.

Why is choosing a clean foundation so important?

Aside from your actual skincare products, your foundation will cover most of your actual skin, allowing for better absorption of potential toxins. You also have to consider that for most of us you will be wearing it 8-12 hours a day many days of the week. And then add that you might not even know what’s in the ingredient list of your beloved foundation… oops!

It’s so important to lower your toxic load by choosing more natural and organic skincare and makeup products!

And if you look at the actual ingredients in traditional foundations, you might find that a natural brand is the way to go. And for all beauty products, one brand that claims to be “natural, green or clean” isn’t enough. I recommend actually reading the label on your products.

Here are some of the hitters for toxic ingredients found in foundations:

While this list may seem overwhelming to look at (and this isn’t even an all-encompassing list of toxic ingredients to look out for), it’s actually designed to help you feel empowered. Those who know better can do better. You can always start with one product at a time to switch. And with my Top 9 Natural and Clean Foundations, you’ll have one less toxic cosmetic product in your home!

Application tips for natural foundation

You can get just the right foundation for your skin, but you end up hating it because you’re applying it wrong and with the wrong tools. Believe it or not, tools make a world of difference when applying foundation and getting the result you want.

Besides the tools, it is also important to prepare the skin before applying the foundation. No matter how good the formula, foundation won’t look good if your skin is dry or flaky.

How to prepare your skin for your foundation

Exfoliate the skin – You don’t need to exfoliate before applying foundation every time (which can irritate the skin), but 1-2 times a week is ideal. Exfoliating your skin removes the dead skin leaving you with the newest and smoothest skin. No more weird dry spots where your foundation is clumping in one area. The peeling creates a smooth surface that your foundation can also adhere to. Some of my favorite scrubs are Josh Rosebrook’s Active Enzyme Exfoliator, Tata Harper’s Radiance Mask, and Pai Virtuous Circle Eco-Bead Exfoliator.

Apply an Oil or Serum – Once your skin is smooth, I always recommend applying an oil or lotion before foundation. This allows the foundation to glide on better and look natural and flawless. Have you ever tried applying foundation to dry skin? Not nice right?! It doesn’t slide any further and ends up looking blotchy. After applying an oil or lotion, wait a few minutes for it to absorb. I like to brush my teeth while I’m waiting.

Apply a foundation – A foundation is a great addition to your makeup routine. It can really help create a seamless canvas. Even after using an oil or face lotion, a primer can be that little extra that takes your foundation look to the next level. I recommend primers because they can really help seal pores. As you probably know, no matter how big or small your pores are, if you wear liquid foundation, it can usually seep into the pores. Not the look we want. That’s not all foundations, they also help your makeup last longer by blocking out the day’s dust/grime. They help fill in fine lines and wrinkles by creating a smooth canvas for your entire complexion. I heard a makeup artist say it acts like drywall for your face, filling in the gaps where needed and creating an even canvas. Especially if you get one with silicone in it. I know there has been some controversy about silicone being a mask and causing breakouts, but I disagree. I think it really depends on your skin and how you tolerate silicone. Some of my favorite clean beauty primers are Beautycounter’s Glow First Primer, Exa’s Just Start Smoothing Primer, and Vapor’s Essential Day Primer.

Using the right tool to apply your foundation is essential to achieve the most natural look!

How to apply your foundation

Use the right tool to apply – Depending on the type of foundation you choose, it’s important to use the right brush or tool. Many times people get the wrong finish from foundation because they use the wrong tool.

Here’s a cheat sheet for using the right tool for the finish you want:

Mineral powder foundations

If you want a lighter finish, use a Flat Top Brush to apply. Tap some mineral powder into the cap and swirl your brush in the product. Then tap off excess on the cap and apply.

for the application. Tap some mineral powder into the cap and swirl your brush in the product. Then tap off excess on the cap and apply. If you want an airbrushed look with medium coverage, use a damp makeup sponge to apply. Put some mineral powder in the Mineral Foundation cap. Then simply dip a damp beauty blender into the powder and apply/apply.

for the application. Put some mineral powder in the Mineral Foundation cap. Then simply dip a damp beauty blender into the powder and apply/apply. If you want heavy/full coverage, use a makeup sponge and mix your mineral foundation with a little water. First, tap some mineral powder into the cap, then use your fingers to add some water until you reach a nice consistency that’s not too dry or wet. It should resemble a liquid consistency. Then apply with the beauty blender.

liquid foundation

If you want medium coverage, use a Flat Thin Foundation Brush. I apply some liquid foundation to the back of my hand and then dab the foundation brush in and make a light dabbing (aka tapping) motion all over my face. Excessive rubbing irritates the skin.

This brush puts more product on the bristles giving you a full coverage look. Apply some product to the back of your hand and dip the brush into it. Apply in a dabbing motion across your face and in downward motions.

Compact cream foundations

I’ve found that when medium to full coverage is desired, the best application for cream compact foundations is with a flat, thin foundation brush. It helps the foundation blend seamlessly into the skin. I use a dotting motion and downward motions.

stick foundations

These are easy to use. Just take the stick and sweep it over parts of your face. From forehead, cheeks, chin and nose. Then use a makeup sponge to blend.

BB Creams/Tinted Moisturizers

These are much easier when it comes to application. Because they’re not as heavy, it’s easier to use and much more forgiving. You can apply it with your fingers, but always wash your hands before applying. I also like to use a Beauty Blender and a Flat Top Foundation Brush. Makeup Sponge for a lighter application and Flat Top for a heavier application. If using your fingers, apply around the T-zone and outwards.

Tips and tricks to make foundation look more natural

Always start in the T-zone and fade out. This is generally where people have redness and discoloration. It also helps the foundation look more natural as the product thins and blends better as it is blended.

A stick foundation is a great option when you just want to spot cover specific areas of your face and achieve a more natural look.

Use a liquid foundation, which can look more natural overall. It blends into the skin more easily and can create a second skin effect.

Moisturize skin! Ensuring skin is hydrated can give you an overall dewy, natural look instead of a cakey, pasty look. Hydrated skin always looks smoother and more youthful.

Less is more. Always start with less product and then gradually work your way up. You can always add more, but it’s harder to take away.

The 9 best natural and clean foundations of 2022

*I wanted to share that all the photos have the same light, maybe a little different due to the weather that day, but the same window, lighting and morning time. I’m also very pregnant, 37-38 weeks in the photos, so if my face looks puffy or I look tired, that’s why! 🙂

I actually prefer this over Ilia’s Vivid Foundation because it doesn’t feel greasy to me and the longevity is great. It’s a liquid but then after a while it sets and you end up with a great long lasting foundation. It really feels and acts like your skin but I still feel like it gives my skin great coverage. A very light foundation. It offers light to medium coverage depending on how much you apply. Comes in a glass pump bottle. It blends so well with your skin leaving a natural look overall. Get it here!

I wear the shade 3.5 in winter and the shade 4.0 of Kosas Tinted Face Oil in summer.

Skin type: Ideal for dry/mature skin

Available shades: 16

My shade: 3.5 in winter and then 4.0 in summer

I love how fresh my skin feels. I thought I wouldn’t like it because I didn’t think it would provide enough coverage for me, but there is actually a good amount of coverage! It makes my skin glow. It’s true to the name, very similar to a face oil in texture but then it has tons of pigment to make it a foundation. I’ve gotten so many compliments since wearing it! People always say my skin is glowing. I take it! Light to medium coverage. It’s very moisturizing overall. Ideal for people with dry skin. A very buildable cover. Get it here!

I wear the shade 123S in Vapor Beauty Soft Focus.

Price: $48 for 30ml

Skin type: Ideal for dry skin

Available shades: 19

My tint: 123S

Such a great all-round foundation! This feels just like your skin when applied and doesn’t feel like you’re wearing a heavy foundation at all. You can definitely build it up if you want. It’s medium to full coverage. It gives you a little shine, no matte finish at all. Feels really soothing on the skin with some great skincare ingredients like Frankincense, Myrrh and Lotus. Ideal for dry skin as it feels very moisturizing. Really easy to use too. No sticky or greasy feeling at all! Get it here!

I wear the shade 440/Katey in the Exa High Fidelity Foundation.

Price: $38 for 1.1 ounce

Skin Type: All skin types

Available shades: 43

My shadow: Katey/440

This foundation is very buildable and you can make the coverage really light or heavy depending on what type of look you’re going for. It has a semi-matte finish. Ideal for those with oily skin or dry skin. It’s moisturizing but not overly moisturizing. I love that it comes in 47 shades! That’s what really makes it so great that every skin tone can find its exact color match. It doesn’t feel heavy but can provide great coverage overall. If you feel like you couldn’t find your exact color, check out Exa. Get it here!

I wear the shade 2.5 in the Crunchi Foundation.

Price: $50 for 30ml

Skin Type: Ideal for all skin types

Available shades: 11

My shade: 2.5

I tried Crunchi’s original formula for their foundation a few years ago but they’ve since reformulated it and it’s better than ever! It has the perfect blend of a satin and semi-matte finish that will give you a flawless look no matter what your skin type. It still feels moisturizing, not too wet from a formula. I love how it glides on and really covers up my redness but still feels like my skin overall. Small things have a big impact! You don’t have to use that much to get really great coverage. I’ve had many people with acne say they don’t have flare-ups using this foundation, as well as some with rosacea who get good coverage but no flare-ups. Get it here!

I wear the shade 340 with self tan and 310 when I don’t wear self tan in the Beautycounter Skin Twin Foundation.

Price: $50 for 30ml

Skin Type: Ideal for all skin types

Available shades: 18

My shade: 340 with self-tanner and 310 when I’m not wearing self-tanner

If you’ve been around for a while, you know I LOVE this foundation. Definitely a popular liquid foundation in clean beauty. It has such a great texture and feels moisturizing yet provides the coverage I crave. Overall a great medium coverage meaning it looks like your skin but better. It contains a lot of hyaluronic acid which really helps plump up the skin and make it appear smooth. I also love the longevity of Skin Twin, it still looks great after a full day of wear. Check it out here!

I’m wearing the shade Atelier III in the Westman Atelier Vital Skin Foundation Stick.

Price: $68 for 0.3 oz

Skin Type: Ideal for all skin types

Available shades: 21

My shadow: Atelier III

This was the first Westman Atelier product I tried and fell in love with. It’s unlike any clean beauty foundation I’ve used. It’s creamy and gives your skin the perfect balance of coverage and shine. It offers a dewy finish that looks like your skin but is enhanced. The foundation is in the form of a stick. You can apply directly to your skin or pick up the product with a brush and then apply it to your skin. I’ve done both and prefer to use the Westman Atelier Foundation Brush to set the product and then apply it to my skin. But I’ve seen Gucci – the founder – do both – it’s whatever you prefer. The special thing about this product is that it is not only a foundation, but also a concealer in one. So you don’t need an additional product. Something I’ve learned to love about it. While the foundation stick might seem pricey at $68, you don’t need to buy a concealer either. It’s a foundation with buildable texture. So if you want more coverage, you can simply apply more product to your skin. You can also use your fingers to blend. This has worked for oily skin and dry skin. This is the first stick foundation that I really loved! Get it here!

I’m wearing the shade Sand in the Juice Beauty Phyto-Pigments Flawless Serum Foundation.

Price: $44 for 30ml

Skin type: Ideal for dry and oily skin

Available shades: 10

My shade: sand

I discovered this foundation last year and I love it! It feels like a serum and is so nourishing and moisturizing on the skin. It really is almost like a skin care product with ingredients like vitamin C and vitamin E as well as resveratrol-rich grape seed and fruit stem cells. It’s just so soothing on the skin. It offers excellent coverage (medium to full) and leaves the skin looking fresh and youthful. It also doesn’t settle in fine lines! My sister who is 43 years old with oily skin loves it as much as I do with my dry skin. Get it here!

And there it is! After years of trying different clean beauty brands, these 9 foundations really stood out from the rest. You’re sure to find one that works for you.

To say that we’ve spent at least a decade searching for the best full coverage foundations would honestly be an understatement at best. We don’t use the same foundations we used when we were teenagers, and with good reason. We always want to find something better – something that doesn’t wrinkle, something that lasts all day, something that properly covers redness and blemishes and blurs our complexion.

Whether you’re looking for the best full-coverage foundations for everyday wear or fancy events, we’re now confident enough to recommend our top 10 to you. We’ve tested, we’ve researched, we’ve trawled through ingredient lists and reviews, and now we know—it’s here. Flawless skin could be just a purchase away!

How we picked the best coverage foundations

As we mentioned, personal use definitely played a role in our decision-making, but we also did a thorough research into real user testimonials, trusted brands and retailers, skin-friendly ingredients and the best skin types for each.

We also consulted the Environmental Working Group (EWG) website to find out which foundations are the safest — and least safe. Of course, we also avoided tinted moisturizers and BB creams for this list as they tend to be much lighter in coverage!

The 10 best covering foundations

1. Liquid Foundation by Mineral Fusion

Hypoallergenic hero

This super clean liquid foundation is EWG approved and claims to offer full coverage while being “undetectable”. Full coverage doesn’t have to be sticky! We also love this choice for its super skin-friendly ingredients. It’s also vegan and cruelty-free!

Advantages:

Contains vitamin C

Naturally UV resistant with light reflecting minerals

Disadvantages:

Matte finish is not for everyone

Available from: Target, Amazon

2. Urban Decay Cosmetics All Nighter Liquid Full Coverage Foundation

For rainy springs and sweaty summers

Urban Decay’s All Nighter Setting Spray is famous and a celebrity favorite (a choice of Lizzo!), so it only makes sense that the foundation from the line is just as iconic. It’s waterproof and abrasion resistant, ready for rain, sweat or splashes!

Advantages:

Oil-free and ideal for oily and combination skin

Buyers call it a “holy grail”

Disadvantages:

The color palette could be more comprehensive

3. Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Foundation

A personal choice

This is the foundation I currently use when I want full coverage! If you want a pore-blurring, skin-plumping look, this is the way to go. The moisturizing ingredients make this liquid foundation a safe bet for dry skin, and we’re always happy to see over 40 shades available – plus a handy color matching tool!

Advantages:

Sweat-proof, moisture-proof, waterproof and transmission-proof

May even help reduce wrinkles

Disadvantages:

One of the more expensive picks as the brand is very popular with celebrity makeup artists

Available from: Charlotte Tilbury, Nordstrom, Sephora

4. Maybelline New York Super Stay Full Coverage Powder Foundation

Our top powder selection

Contrary to popular belief, powder foundations can also be full coverage! You just have to find the right ones. This powder with a matte finish is highly pigmented and promises 16 hours of flawless wear. Oily, combination, and normal skin types will find that powder is the way to go!

Advantages:

On sale for under $5 at Amazon and Walmart (at time of publication)

The creamy texture is easy to blend

Disadvantages:

Requires a brush or makeup sponge to apply

Available at: Amazon, Walmart, Ulta

5. Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Foundation

The reliable favourite

If you’ve been into makeup for a while, you’ve probably heard tons of good things about this foundation. And it lives up to the hype! It’s oil-free, fragrance-free and aims to deliver full, matte coverage that doesn’t move for up to 24 hours. This is an award winner with almost 7,000 reviews on Sephora’s website alone!

Advantages:

56 shades

Disadvantages:

$46 for 1 fl. oz.

Available from: Sephora, Ulta, Nordstrom, Dermstore

6. NYX Can’t Stop Won’t Stop Foundation

We’ve listed a few foundations that we’d recommend for oily skin, but we absolutely adore this affordable favorite — our top pick on our list of the best drugstore foundations for oily skin. It offers full, matte coverage for up to 24 hours, is non-comedogenic and is a proclaimed “high achiever” when it comes to shine control!

Claims to be waterproof, transfer-proof, moisture-proof

Nothing for dry skin

Available at: Amazon, Ulta, Target

7. Kevin Aucoin Foundation Balm

Our choice for dry skin

Don’t worry – we haven’t forgotten dry skin types! Have you ever tried a foundation balm? It could be the key to silky soft skin. This is enriched with Hyaluronic Acid and Vitamin E to keep skin supple and rough patches at bay. It’s also from a Kim Kardashian-approved brand!

Feels weightless

Disadvantages:

One of the more expensive picks

Available from: Sephora

10. Tarte Face Tape Foundation

The foundation version of your favorite concealer

Tarte Shape Tape Concealer is arguably the most well-known out there for its incredible coverage, so why not add foundation as well? It’s powered by Snow Mushroom to hydrate skin while providing a natural matte finish, and contains Apple Fruit Extract to protect skin from free radicals!

What product is the cornerstone of every celebrity makeup artist’s kit? Foundation, endowment. “For the most natural look possible, the foundation should always blend seamlessly with the skin,” says make-up artist Laura Mercier, founder of the cult brand of the same name and pioneer of the “flawless face”. But how do stars achieve that perfectly glowing, red-carpet-ready skin in the dead of winter, amid a grueling schedule of long-haul flights, award shows and press parties? Using charged, groundbreaking formulations that do more than just cover and conceal. Below, six celebrity makeup artists share the basics they use for an award-winning complexion.

1. Kosas Tinted Facial Oil

“One of my favorite products for the winter months is Kosa’s Tinted Face Oil,” says makeup artist Marissa Machado, who used a mix of shades four and five on Rami Malek at the Golden Globes to slightly even out the tone and create a natural skin feel of warm, sun-kissed skin. The serum-like formula contains three types of mineral pigments in a base of six active vegetable oils to instantly even skin tone, minimize pores and eliminate imperfections. “It’s not just hydrating; It’s super light so your skin never feels sticky. It’s the perfect coverage with the most natural finish.”

2. Westman Atelier Vital Skin Foundation

“I want skin to look like skin, so I love a blendable, creamy formula,” says makeup artist and founder of Westman Atelier Gucci Westman, whose clients include Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon and Gwyneth Paltrow. “I always use at least two shades of Westman Atelier Vital Skin Foundation to ensure I’m creating an individual complexion story – whether it’s on myself or on my clients.” (Westman used shades V and VI for at her recent wedding Paltrow). Formulated with phytosphingosine to lock in moisture, reduce the appearance of fine lines and fight redness and inflammation, and plant-based squalane to restore skin’s suppleness and flexibility for a dewy, fresh finish.

3. Chanel Ultra Le Teint

Makeup artist Kara Yoshimoto Bua, known for her iconic red carpet looks, used Chanel’s Ultra Le Teint Flawless Finish Foundation, a liquid matte foundation that stays put in even the most polluting conditions, for Rachel Weisz and Saoirse Ronan for the Golden Globes. “Take a few pumps and mix by rubbing hands together first. then blend upwards and outwards to create a veil across the face, jawline and neck to create a satin-like porcelain finish,” she advises.

4. Laura Mercier Flawless Lumiere Radiance-Perfecting Foundation

Laura Mercier’s Flawless Lumiere Radiance-Perfecting Foundation is formulated with brightening Vitamin C and Silver Ear Fungus Extract (which is 400 times more moisturizing than Sodium Hyaluronate) to plump up skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It appears more radiant, clearer and more even – tightens the skin over time, so your skin is radiant and moisturized even without makeup. “It gives you a perfect natural glow and looks radiant no matter what light you’re in,” says Mario Dedivanovic, whose clients include Kim Kardashian, Kate Bosworth and Ariana Grande.

5. Dior forever

Actresses Emily Blunt, Michelle Yeo and Zoey Deutch are all fans of the Dior Forever 24-hour wear high-perfect foundation with ultra-hydrating, antioxidant-loaded wild pansy and rose fruit extracts. “Whatever relationship women have with their makeup, everyone wants that perfect, raised complexion that foundation gives them,” says Creative Director Peter Philips. The new Forever Foundations are available in two versions: velvety matt and radiantly luminous. “The matte finish evens out the complexion and conceals imperfections and fine lines, while the shine is more versatile: in soft light it catches the light intermittently, in sunlight its presence is more powerful.”

6. Beauty counter Skin Tint Hydrating Foundation

“What’s amazing about this product is that it makes your skin look like skin while the hyaluronic acid it contains acts as a moisture magnet,” says Christy Coleman, chief artistic officer of the clean beauty brand, which used Skin Tint in Honey at Connie Britton for the golden globes. “It’s also fully buildable and blends easily, so you can go from light to medium coverage while evening out skin tone.” Also presenter Maya Rudolph used Skin Tint in Tan that night.

“I was introduced to the L’Oréal True Match Foundation early in my career,” said makeup artist Lisa Aharon. “It offers an incredible range of easy-to-blend colors covering the lightest to the darkest, warmest to the coolest skin tones. It’s my first drugstore foundation pick for medium coverage with a naturally radiant finish.”

L’Oréal’s True Match Foundation is available in over 40 different shades, making it easy for everyone to find the perfect combination for their skin tone. The formula is moisturizing and formulated with provitamin B5 and vitamin E to keep your skin looking radiant and healthy. It also contains SPF 17 to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.

The cult favorite Maybelline Fit Me Foundation is available in over 40 different shades, offering variety for every skin tone.

“I found it to be such an easy formula to apply and great for everyday use,” said Australian makeup artist Tobi Henney. “It doesn’t take too much powder to set and it has an incredible color palette.”

The formula minimizes pores and contains smudging micro-powders that clear pores and absorb oil for a naturally matte and flawless-looking finish.

If you’re looking for a full coverage foundation that doesn’t feel too heavy, try this L.A. Girl Foundation.

“This one looks great on camera and is buildable – even if you only apply a thin layer, it’s still full coverage,” Bybel said. “You don’t have to build too much on it and it’s matte, which I always love.”

L.A. Girl’s Pro Matte Foundation is made with a paraben-free formula with added antioxidants to help hydrate your skin and improve its appearance. It’s high definition and durable to create a full coverage finish that’s comfortable enough to wear all day.

“This foundation lasts 24 hours and is perfect for girls on the go. You have to blend her quickly, but she’ll help you go from day to night,” Henney said.

Available in a wide range of shades, this Revlon foundation promises to keep your makeup “flawless all day.” It offers a matte finish for up to 24 hours, contains hyaluronic acid to keep your skin hydrated, contains SPF 15 and is oil-free.

“For a dry skin type that’s also looking for SPF, I love Physicians Formula The Healthy Foundation SPF 20,” shared Aharon. “It’s enriched with my favorite moisturizing ingredient – hyaluronic acid – and offers lightweight but buildable coverage.”

This formula is designed to be long lasting, breathable, and offers medium to full coverage with a healthy satin finish. The formula’s brightening complex and hyaluronic acid hydrate, brighten and improve the appearance of your skin tone. It also contains vitamins A, C and E for an extra antioxidant boost.

This foundation from Burt’s Bees is another great powder option that’s expert-approved.

“Oily summer skin can really benefit from an easy-to-apply powder foundation like Burt’s Bees Mattifying Powder Foundation,” said Aharon. “I appreciate the brand’s clean and vegan formula along with its versatility. The sponge allows for more complete coverage, while using it with a brush over your moisturizer gives you a light evening skin.”

This foundation controls shine with buildable and blendable coverage to give you a smooth and even skin tone and blur imperfections. The formula is lightweight, non-comedogenic and ideal for oily skin.

“Personally, I love using a matte foundation, but matte foundations in general are always better for people with oily skin,” Bybel said. “If you have something super wet on your oily skin, you’re just going to end up looking like a disco ball, which nobody wants. It’s oil-free, sits on your skin, and won’t clog your pores.”

CoverGirl’s Clean Matte Liquid Foundation leaves your skin looking poreless and is designed to give a fresh, shine-free base to enhance your natural makeup look.

Where do pecans originate from?

Originating in central and eastern North America and the river valleys of Mexico, pecans were widely used by pre-colonial residents. Pecans were favored because they were accessible to waterways, easier to shell then other North American nut species and of course, for their great taste.

The history of pecans can be traced back to the 16th century. As the only large tree nut that grows naturally in North America, the pecan is considered one of the most valuable North American nuts. The name “pecan” is a Native American word of Algonquin origin used to describe “any nut that requires a stone to crack”. The Algonquins were a North American tribe on the Ottawa and St. Lawrence rivers, where pecans were a staple during the winter months. Today, hundreds of pecan varieties are still known by their Native American names such as Cheyenne, Sioux, Choctaw, Kiowa, and Creek.

Native to central and eastern North America and the river valleys of Mexico, pecans were widely used by pre-colonial residents. Pecans were favored because they were accessible to waterways, easier to shell than other North American nuts, and of course, their great flavor.

United States Presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were known as early proponents of pecans. After a trip south, Thomas Jefferson returned to Virginia, where he shared his holdings of pecans and seedlings with George Washington. Both men planted and grew the trees on their personal property. Thomas Jefferson once wrote home from Paris to get a delivery. At the end of the Civil War, it was well documented that Union soldiers were bringing pecans back to their families from the front lines, once again spreading this great American nut across the nation.

Today, the US produces between 80% and 90% of the world’s pecans, with an annual crop of about 300 million pounds. Outside the US, there is some production in Mexico and growing production in South Africa. Nut harvest for growers usually begins in mid-October. Historically, Georgia has been the top pecan producing state in the US, followed by Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma. Louisiana typically ranks seventh or eighth on the annual US production list. The typical tree grows 75 to 100 feet tall. An irrigated, managed acre of pecan trees can produce up to 1,000 pounds of pecans.

A rich source of energy, pecans contain health-promoting nutrients, minerals, antioxidants and vitamins essential to well-being.

Where do most pecans come from?

The United States is the world’s leading producer of pecans, and Georgia is historically the leading pecan-producing State, typically accounting for about 33 percent of U.S. production. In 2015, Georgia’s pecan crop is forecast at 100 million pounds (in-shell), an increase of 32 percent over the 2014/15 harvest.

Pecan trees, a species of hickory, are the source of the only commercially produced tree nut native to the United States. The United States is the world’s top pecan producer, and Georgia is historically the top pecan-producing state, typically accounting for about 33 percent of US production. For 2015, Georgia’s pecan crop is forecast to be 100 million pounds (in shell), a 32 percent increase over the 2014/15 crop. New Mexico has the second highest production, with the 2015 harvest expected to reach 72 million pounds (in shell), which is 26 percent of the US harvest. Texas rounds out the top three states producing pecans with a 2015 production forecast of 37 million pounds. Texas producers have more acreage of native pecans and seedlings than of improved varieties, and production in that state has been more variable from year to year than in New Mexico or Georgia, as compared to the nearly 40 percent drop in production in 2015 shows the 2014 harvest of £61 million. Why are pecans so expensive?

Pecan farmers say bad weather and demand from China are forcing prices up. The price of pecans is going up, up, up, which may mean that if you’re planning a pecan pie for Thanksgiving, the time to buy them is now. The reasons behind that escalating price all come down to natural forces: supply and demand and weather.

The enigmatic pecan: why so expensive and how to pronounce it?

The price of pecans is going up, up, up, which may mean that if you’re planning a pecan pie for Thanksgiving, now is the time to buy it. The reasons for this escalating price all lie in the forces of nature: supply and demand and weather.

According to Randy Hudson, a fourth-generation pecan farmer, China can’t get enough pecans. Its Hudson Pecan Co. in Ocilla, Georgia, ships 80 to 90 percent of its pecans to China. And he suspects that a total of 10 to 15 million pounds of pecans, or about 7 percent of US production, will be shipped from the US to China this year.

The Chinese, says Hudson, are hungry for all kinds of nuts. Their growing economy means they are more willing to pay higher prices, and that drives up prices everywhere.

Demand is also moving faster than pecans can grow. “You don’t just plant pecans, it takes 10 years,” from planting to harvest, Hudson tells Melissa Block of All Things Considered.

In addition, “the most important thing is the weather,” says Hudson. South Georgia, home to many of the country’s pecan orchards, experienced two of its wettest springs and summers on record last year, “leading to real problems with disease.”

Pecans are currently around $9 a pound in the US, but according to Forbes.com, pecans can be as high as $11, even $12 a pound, in grocery stores by the end of November.

And speaking of pecans, is there a correct way to say the word? (After all, there are several different takes, including pee-kahn, pi-kahn, and pee-kan.)

Not really, says Grant Barrett, co-host of A Way with Words, the public radio show about linguistics.

“It’s always had a variety of pronunciations,” Barrett tells Block. “We find it for the first time 300 years ago in the diaries of French and Spanish explorers in the New World. And from the beginning the spelling and pronunciation remained unfixed.”

A dialect poll of the word pecan found that in the US, nearly 30 percent say pee-kahn, 21 percent say pi-kahn, while only 13 percent had pee-can.

What do pecans grow on?

Pecans grow in orchards or groves of trees. Groves are groups of trees that grow naturally while orchards are planted by humans. Trees, whether in grooves or orchards, can live for many years with thorough management by expert and dedicated pecan growers. Orchards are ideal to grow and sell pecans commercially.

Pecans are one of Mother Nature’s greatest gifts. The United States is the world’s leading producer of pecans, which account for 80% of the pecans produced worldwide.

There are over 1000 types of pecans, all varying in taste, appearance, and overall quality. Some are slightly drier with a nuttier flavor and texture, while others have a buttery flavor. In general, all pecans have a similar buttery and nutty flavor.

Where are pecans grown?

As the largest producer of pecans, the United States grows pecans commercially in fifteen states. The following states are home to some of the largest pecan farms: California, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Mexico, and Texas. Georgia and Texas are the leading states in growing pecans.

Where did pecans start growing?

Most people think that pecans come from the southern parts of the United States. However, many people are surprised to find out that they were first known to Europeans. Native Americans consumed and traded pecans long ago. However, it was Europeans who popularized the use and sale of pecans in the 16th century.

The first Europeans to find pecans were Spanish explorers then living in the southern parts of the United States. They began trading pecans to other regions of the world, and then pecan farms and orchards gradually began to grow in certain states of the United States.

How are pecans grown?

Pecans grow in orchards or clusters of trees. Groves are groups of trees that grow naturally, while orchards are planted by humans. Trees, whether in grooves or orchards, can live for many years if carefully cared for by experienced and dedicated pecan growers. Orchards are ideal for growing and selling pecans commercially.

It takes seven to ten years for a pecan tree to produce nuts. However, once the tree begins to provide a full supply of nuts, it produces pecans for a very long time, in some cases more than hundreds of years.

When harvest season comes, farmers may need to plant more new trees in their orchards. Trees take 10 years at most to fully mature and bear fruit, but the farmers make every effort and use their expertise to create the best conditions for the trees to grow big enough. They give gallons of water and maintain the quality of the soil to ensure its fertility. They plow the land and spread the fertilizers before planting new pecan trees. You also need to take care of the land to avoid damage from insects or pests.

Wrap up

Pecans are grown commercially in fifteen states, with Georgia, Texas, and New Mexico being the largest producers. The US alone produces 80% of the world’s pecans with about 500 different varieties.
