Happy with your current phone but not with your current network? Thanks to the Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act, it’s perfectly legal to unlock your phone and switch to a new provider.

Unlocking your phone is legal but some restrictions may apply as they say. Your phone must be paid for in full, whether you’re on an installment plan or letting a two-year contract expire. If you have a prepaid phone, cellphone providers can’t block you for more than 12 months.

In addition, the phone you want to unlock must not be reported lost or stolen and your account must be in good standing.

We’ll cover how the four major carriers in the US – AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon – handle unlock requests. Before we get to the cellphone providers, though, it’s a good idea to check if your phone is locked.

Find out if your phone is already unlocked

You may not need to ask your carrier to unlock your phone. Verizon, for example, largely sells unlocked phones.

The surest way to check if your phone is unlocked is to call your current carrier and ask. If you’re not up to the task of navigating customer service and you have a GSM phone (uses a SIM card), you can swap out a SIM card from another provider to see if it works. If you can make calls or send text messages with the new SIM card, your phone is unlocked.

Now let’s look at the straps.

Verizon

Verizon states on its Device Unlocking Policy page: “We do not lock our 4G LTE devices and no code is required to program them for use with another carrier. We do not lock our 3G devices, with the exception of our non-iPhone 3G World devices.”

In other words, if you have a recent iPhone with 4G LTE service, you don’t need to unlock your phone. If you have a locked Verizon 3G World Device phone, you can use the unlock code 000000 or 123456 or call 800-922-0204 for assistance.

Verizon’s 3G prepaid phone-in-the-box phones can be unlocked after 12 months of use.

AT&T

With AT&T, you can avoid calling customer service and use the device unlock portal to unlock your phone.

Although the law states that a provider cannot block prepaid phone customers for more than 12 months, AT&T cuts this service time in half. For AT&T prepaid or GoPhone accounts, you can unlock your phone after six months of use.

T Mobile

T-Mobile will unlock your phone but limit you to two unlock codes per service line within 12 months.

With prepaid plans, you can unlock your phone after 12 months of service. You can also unlock it if it had more than $25 in refills for basic phones or $100 in refills for smartphones.

If you have an Android phone, you can use T-Mobile’s Device Unlock app to request T-Mobile to unlock your phone. Others will need to contact customer service at 877-746-0909.

sprint

Sprint automatically unlocks recently used phones. Sprint will automatically unlock any phone released after February 2015 once the installment plan is complete or the device is otherwise paid off. Sprint adds a constraint, in addition to the usual things about your account being in good standing and your phone not being reported as lost or stolen: even if you prepaid your phone in full, it must be active on Sprint’s network for at least 50 days before you can unlock it.

For older phones, Sprint will send you an unlock code when you’ve paid for your phone in full. It will notify you if you are eligible for the unlock code. You must contact Sprint Customer Service at 888-226-7212 to obtain the unlock code.

For older (read: non-LTE) phones, you need to consider that Sprint and Verizon are on the CDMA network, and AT&T and T-Mobile use GSM. These two 3G networks are not compatible with each other. To further cloud the picture, Verizon 3G phones are not compatible with Sprint 3G and vice versa, although both use CDMA. However, in general, swapping a SIM card from one unlocked GSM 3G phone to another will be successful (AT&T to T-Mobile or vice versa).

Switching a 4G LTE phone to another carrier is less complicated as all carriers with LTE are on the same page for their 4G coverage.

In the end, it’s a good idea to check with your intended new carrier to make sure your phone is compatible before attempting to switch.

An Android phone without a SIM card can still be used as a WiFi-only device to send messages, make phone calls, surf the web, and do almost anything that can be done on a smartphone with an active cellular plan.

Use an Android phone without a SIM card or phone number

Smartphones and SIM cards are like Siamese twins and it is difficult to imagine one without the other.

However, getting a SIM card also means signing a contract, paying monthly fees, taxes, and other fees to use the network of service providers.

If for some reason you don’t want to subscribe or spend money on a cell phone plan, you can still use your Android phone as a WiFi only device.

Even without an active SIM card and phone number, your phone can send and receive messages, surf the Internet, use Google Maps, play videos, watch movies, and perform other tasks over the free WiFi network.

1. Activate Android phone without SIM card

The first hurdle to overcome to start using an Android phone without an active cellular plan is to activate your device without using a SIM card.

When you start setting up a new or factory reset Android phone, you’ll be prompted to insert the SIM card, but most Android phones let you skip the “Insert SIM card” prompt and complete the setup process.

Just press the power button to start your phone > dismiss the “Insert SIM card” prompt > select language > select your WiFi network > enter the WiFi network password and follow the instructions to complete the setup process.

2. Use VOIP apps for text messaging, voice and video calling

Without a SIM card, your Android phone doesn’t have a phone number associated with it that other users can use to contact or call you.

However, there are many popular VOIP apps like WhatsApp, Google Voice, TextNow, Telegram and others that can be used to send text messages and make voice and video calls.

Perhaps the most popular among these is WhatsApp, which allows its users to make free voice and video calls with anyone located anywhere in the world.

Although WhatsApp verifies its users using a phone number, it is still possible to use WhatsApp without a phone number or SIM card.

3. Use Chrome browser to surf the web

It is very likely that your Android phone already has the Chrome browser installed. If not, you can download and install Chrome app on your Android device from Google Play Store.

4. Project movies and videos from Android phone to TV

If you’re like most users, you probably want to use your smartphone to seek entertainment, learn new skills, and acquire knowledge.

These requirements can be easily met by YouTube, which comes preinstalled on most Android phones.

In addition to YouTube, you can download Netflix, Amazon Prime and others from the Google Play Store to meet your entertainment needs.

If you have a Chromecast device, you can project movies and videos from Android phone to the bigger screen of your home TV.

5. Use Google Maps offline

What is the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP)?

The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) is the latest federal benefit program operated by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to provide low-income Americans with rebates on monthly broadband service and connected Internet devices.

The ACP offers rebates of up to $30 on monthly broadband Internet access (or up to $75 per eligible household in tribal areas) and up to $100 on certain connected devices.

ACP services and devices are subject to consumer eligibility, carrier participation, product availability and FCC/Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC) approval. The ACP was launched on December 31, 2021 and replaces the Emergency Broadband Benefit (EBB) program. Subscribers enrolled with EBB on December 31, 2021 can keep their EBB perk for 60 days and must upgrade to the ACP perk on March 1, 2022 if eligible.

How to use your network unlock code

The Network Unlock Code (NUC), sometimes referred to as a Network Unlock PIN (NUP) or Network Control Key (NCK), allows you to unlock a cell phone from its original network.

If you haven’t received a NUC, you can request one.

There’s a lot to do when you get a new SIM card. It could be paired with a new phone with a plan, it could be a smaller SIM card that fits in a new phone, or you could make a change and switch carriers, or even replace a broken SIM card.

The last thing you want is for it to get overly complicated and left with no reachable phone. It can get overwhelming, but as long as you keep an eye on the activation process, you can get it done in no time.

Quick Steps: Activate a new SIM card

Insert the new SIM card into your phone and let the phone turn on. Activate your new SIM card with the associated activation key (this is included in the package). You may need a valid ID. Use this key to activate the SIM card online. To do this, you need an internet connection (use a computer or your WiFi). Wait some time and it should activate shortly.

Make sure you read the instructions that came with your new SIM card carefully in case an extra step is required.

What does a new SIM card do?

Your new SIM card will connect you to your new plan and carrier if you’ve switched to another carrier. With the SIM card, you can send and receive text messages and make and receive calls.

SIM cards do not affect your phone’s memory data. The only data your SIM card references is the mobile network data you use to access the internet with your phone without a WiFi connection, e.g. B. at home or at work. SIM cards do not reset your phone.

Is my phone unlocked?

If your phone is not unlocked i. H. it is paired with your current plan and only works with your current cellular network, you cannot switch to a different SIM card. This is where getting a postpaid or prepaid plan could be very valuable.

Most phones are now sold with the network unlocked, even if bought with a plan, so that’s unlikely to be an issue. However, prepaid phones can still be tied to your provider – you can check with the telco you bought your phone from if you are unsure.

Are new SIM cards free?

Typically, SIM cards come bundled with prepaid, postpaid, and bundled phone plans, so the price is included in the total sale. However, you can buy SIM cards in shops – including supermarkets and department stores – or buy them online and have the card shipped to you. They cannot be physically printed as they are a small chip that is inserted into your phone.

What types of SIM cards are there?

There are three types of SIM cards. Standard SIM, Micro SIM and Nano SIM sorted by size in descending order. Newer phones use the nano SIM, while older phones use the standard and micro SIM.

Regardless, when you get a new SIM card, you usually initially get a standard SIM that can be converted to a smaller size, so for phones compatible with micro or nano SIM.

Some phones support eSIM technology, which does not involve a physical SIM card and uses built-in SIM technology instead. However, your provider must also be eSIM-enabled for this.

How to activate your new SIM card

We’ve put together a few steps to help you make sure your SIM card is up and running in no time.

Note the numbers

Your SIM provider has a detailed explanation of what to do when you receive your SIM card in the package. Usually it comes with a SIM number. This will come in handy later after your SIM card is in your phone – you don’t want the SIM card in your phone without knowing the numbers!

If you have your SIM card replaced by a professional, they should have done it for you and all you need to do is activate the SIM card.

Register your SIM card online

Sign up for your SIM provider’s online service. This can be done through a search engine or through the service’s app on your phone. Just make sure you are connected to the internet.

Make sure you know your access data and have your SIM card numbers ready. An option to activate the SIM card should appear. Now enter the numbers and you should be prompted to activate the card.

Insert the SIM card into your phone

SIM cards must be inserted into the phone to work. It’s usually a process that doesn’t require that much effort, and depending on where you buy your phone from, they can usually do it for you.

If not, all you need to do is take the SIM key that came with your phone or just straighten a paper clip and stick it in the little hole on the side of the phone where the SIM card goes in. This will open the phone SIM tray where you can insert the card. Make sure it’s the right way round!

If you have your SIM card replaced by a professional, they should have done it for you and all you need to do is activate the SIM card.

How long does it take for a SIM card to be activated?

The time it takes to activate a SIM card can vary widely depending on the reason for the change – most activations take between 15 minutes and four hours. If it still doesn’t work after this time, try turning your phone off and on again.

If it still isn’t activated after that, try reinserting the SIM card. If all of that fails, contact your SIM provider. They have an online access portal where you can talk to someone over the internet if you can’t reach them on another phone.

Tell people about a new phone number

After installing your new SIM card, you should contact everyone close to you and tell them about it. If you have a physical phone book, easy! If you relied on your old phone’s address book, you may have backed it up to cloud storage.

With iPhones, that’s easy to do if you’re also switching from an older model to a newer model: just make sure you have your Apple ID. If you’re using an Android, you should have all your old contacts saved in your Google address book – they should be saved with your account.

Choose the right plan for your SIM card

What is the best phone plan? It’s whatever you see as good for you. Changing your SIM card is a good time to see if you have a plan that works for you. It might be time to see if other providers have perks you want.
