A ramp or jack Loosen all nuts on all four wheels, but do not remove them completely. Jack up the front of the car first so that the front wheels are off the ground. Remove the nuts on the two front wheels, and then remove the wheels completely. Be sure to keep the nuts in a safe place so you don’t lose them before you need to put them back on. Once the wheels are removed you can see the dirty and probably rusty calipers. Spritz some brake cleaner on a toothbrush and start scrubbing the calipers clean. You will need to apply several rounds of brake cleaner to fully clean the calipers. Do not spray the cleaner anywhere directly on the calipers, instead spray the toothbrush and apply the cleaner that way. You may have to spend a short amount of time cleaning the calipers. The longer you spend on this step, the better the overall effect will be when you’re done. After scrubbing the calipers clean, remove the front retaining clip and cover the bleed valve with tape. Make sure you completely cover the valve with tape as you don’t want to get paint on this part. Once the valve is covered, also tape off the brake hose connections. You need to protect these when you spray paint the caliper. Take the piece of stiff cardboard and cut out a piece in the shape of an upside down letter L. The L should be big enough so you can place it over the bracket that will hold the caliper in place and protect any parts of the car behind it. Take one of the plastic tote bags or the plastic wrap and cover the rotor to protect it from the spray paint. You will find that you have to spin the rotor to catch the plastic between the pads and the rotor wheel. Otherwise, there will be gaps on the rotor that are not covered by the plastic, and if paint gets in those places, you can seal the pads to the rotor, which will stop the brakes from working. You may need to use a few pieces of tape to hold the plastic in place. Spray the caliper with slow and even strokes. Take your time to create smooth and even layers as this gives the best look once you are done. It doesn’t matter if you get paint on the side of the pad that contacts the caliper, but take extra care not to get paint between the pad and rotor. This is the benefit of removing the calipers entirely, but as long as you have taken the necessary precautions to completely cover the rotor, there is no need to remove the calipers from the vehicle. Allow the paint to dry before removing the plastic and cardboard. Proceed to the next wheel and repeat the process again. You’ll need to remove the jack stands from the front of the car and raise the rear end instead once you’ve painted the front calipers. Make sure the paint is completely dry before reinstalling the wheels. After you’ve painted all four calipers and swapped out the wheels, take your car for a ride and test the brakes. If you find any problems, contact a local workshop to have the brakes checked.

To be honest I painted my rotor hats on my previous 911. I have never used high temperature paint and have never had any problems in the race either. Not too ****, but the head temp sensor was recessed in the head within a 1/4 inch of the inner surface. Do not forget that the cylinders and heads are heat-vented, the walls are coated with Nikasil, and the pistons and heads are constantly in contact with oil that cools the engine, not to mention the constant flow of air provided by the cooling fan. The center of the explosion will reach high temperatures, but the surfaces will be cooled. Most of the heat is dissipated as exhaust and I would think that the manifolds would generate more heat on the engine’s outer surface. That doesn’t bother me as much as the brakes because they’re under constant pressure. Since the rotor is not in direct contact with the caliper, the pads act as an insulator and the best brake fluids boil at temperatures between 450 and 550 degrees. I would assume these temperatures will not be exceeded for any length of time, which is still safe. So my guess would be that the steel piston would be exposed to a temperature of less than 500 degrees F in strenuous racing conditions in contact with the pad under strenuous racing conditions and additional cooling and airflow would help minimize this for longer periods, so I was guessing around 400 degrees. In my shop I cast aluminium, magnesium and bronze and I can tell you that a molten aluminum crucible can have a temperature of 1400 degrees and if you place a thermocouple within half an inch you will only get temperatures less than that register half that of the metal temp. Assuming the same is true for a 1200 degree rotor, the caliper will be exposed to less than 600 degrees of radiant heat and should not, with the airflow, raise the caliper’s core temperature above the fluid’s maximum boiling temperature.
