To be honest I painted my rotor hats on my previous 911. I have never used high temperature paint and have never had any problems in the race either. Not too ****, but the head temp sensor was recessed in the head within a 1/4 inch of the inner surface. Do not forget that the cylinders and heads are heat-vented, the walls are coated with Nikasil, and the pistons and heads are constantly in contact with oil that cools the engine, not to mention the constant flow of air provided by the cooling fan. The center of the explosion will reach high temperatures, but the surfaces will be cooled. Most of the heat is dissipated as exhaust and I would think that the manifolds would generate more heat on the engine’s outer surface. That doesn’t bother me as much as the brakes because they’re under constant pressure. Since the rotor is not in direct contact with the caliper, the pads act as an insulator and the best brake fluids boil at temperatures between 450 and 550 degrees. I would assume these temperatures will not be exceeded for any length of time, which is still safe. So my guess would be that the steel piston would be exposed to a temperature of less than 500 degrees F in strenuous racing conditions in contact with the pad under strenuous racing conditions and additional cooling and airflow would help minimize this for longer periods, so I was guessing around 400 degrees. In my shop I cast aluminium, magnesium and bronze and I can tell you that a molten aluminum crucible can have a temperature of 1400 degrees and if you place a thermocouple within half an inch you will only get temperatures less than that register half that of the metal temp. Assuming the same is true for a 1200 degree rotor, the caliper will be exposed to less than 600 degrees of radiant heat and should not, with the airflow, raise the caliper’s core temperature above the fluid’s maximum boiling temperature.
