Should I use a natural hair dye?

Firstly, if you are dealing with dry hair then a plant-based product might help. “Most traditional hair dyes use ammonia, resorcinol, paraphenylenediamine (PPD) and paratoluenediamine (PTD),” says Olivia Crighton, hairstylist and director of Glasshouse Salon. “These [ingredients] can increase the PH of your hair above normal and the ammonia can damage your hair condition.” But that’s not all.

Conventional hair dyes are known to break down the protein in your hair while wicking away moisture, explains Crighton. “This prevents the cuticle from closing effectively, which can result in lackluster hair that can appear dull, have reduced color retention, and you may find your color fades more quickly.”

Additionally, ammonia (which gives hair dye that unpleasant odor) and resorcinol, a common coloring pigment, are highly toxic in nature. Studies in the past have linked these chemicals to skin and eye irritation, and in extreme cases, respiratory problems.

“After all, paraphenylenediamine (PPD) and para-toluylenediamine (PTD) are petroleum derivatives,” warns Crighton, which should be used with caution. “Permanent hair color often contains high percentages of these ingredients that are irritating to sensitive skin types.”

1. Think about how you wash and care for your hair

Certain ingredients in shampoos and conditioners can affect how well natural hair dyes are absorbed by your hair.

“You don’t want to use silicone shampoo,” says Eric Bone, International Director Sustainable Innovation, Hair Metiers, L’Oréal Research and Innovation. “Silicone shampoos are heavy and prevent the color from getting onto your hair.”

Silicones also create an artificial barrier around your hair strands and can inhibit color absorption. Stick to natural shampoos and biodegradable products to get the most out of your hair color.

“They’re very gentle on the hair fiber,” says Bone, “should be a good complement [to the color] to condition your hair.”

2. Don’t be afraid to ask for advice

Again, consulting a professional stylist can lead to better color results. Although there are natural dyes on the market, they all work differently depending on the hair color – so while they work well on blondes, darker colors may not produce results.

The condition of your hair can also make a big difference in how well the color adheres to your tresses. But if you think you can’t get natural color because of your frizzy roots or dried-out ends, think again.

“Any product you put on your hair depends on the condition of your hair and whether or not it’s damaged,” says Bone. “For example, if you have very thick hair, it’s a bit harder to pick up the color than if you have slightly damaged hair – it’s easier.” Who knew?

4. Look for natural ingredients

“Many brands are now introducing ingredients like beetroot and henna as alternatives to chemical dyes,” says Francesca Dixon, senior creative colorist at Hari’s Hairdressers.

“Be aware that some of these are color enhancers rather than dyes,” says Dixon. “You can still achieve a great overall color, but they don’t penetrate the cortex of the hair, so many aren’t as permanent as a chemical dye.”

Newer natural hair coloring formulas also use specially sourced Asian powders to color the hair. Cassia powder, henna powder, indigo leaf powder, alma powder, and neem powder can all be combined in a variety of ways to create pastes that change your hair color.

And where previously hair dyes took 3 hours to set, these powders can naturally lighten hair in 30 minutes to an hour. Although you can leave the salon in an hour, beware of harsh chemicals two days after, as the color will take some time to set.

“If you go for darker shades where you have a greater concentration of natural indigo dye, you would go through a process that would take several hours for full color development,” says Bone.

“It can take up to 48 hours which is why we say you have full color development on the darker shades. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t wash your hair during this time, as the dye particles are already in your hair and will be oxidized by hair oxidation to give the final color.”

Now that you know a little bit about each type of Adore hair dye, it’s time to delve into how to use them. Directions for use will vary depending on which specific hair dye you choose, so make sure you’re following the correct directions. Let’s get into that!

Adore and Adore Plus semi-permanent hair color

Adore semi-permanent dyes are extremely easy to apply and you will be convinced after reading this section. Here’s what you need to do to get the most out of your coloring session:

Do a skin allergy test. Two days before dying your hair, apply a penny-sized amount of dye to the inside of your elbow. Wait 48 hours and see how your skin reacts. If there are signs of irritation, wash off the color and do not apply to your hair. Examine your scalp. Make sure your scalp isn’t injured or irritated. Using the dye on an affected scalp can make the problem worse. Gather your supplies. To color your hair, you will need the color, a plastic mixing bowl, clarifying shampoo, a coloring brush, a comb, petroleum jelly, clips, a plastic cap, and towels (optional). Shampoo your hair. To get the best possible dye adhesion, your hair needs to be clean. So wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo. Dry your hair with a microfiber towel. Protect your hairline. Apply petroleum jelly (or other barrier cream) around your hairline, ears, and the back of your neck. Be careful not to get it on your hair. Put the color in a mixing bowl and mix briefly with your coloring brush. Divide your hair into 4 to 6 sections and secure each section with a clip. Using the coloring brush, apply the hair dye section by section, starting ⅛ inch from your scalp. Afterward, comb your hair through to ensure even product distribution. Cover your hair with a plastic cap and leave the color on for up to 15 minutes for Adore and 25 minutes for Adore Plus. You can take this a step further and sit under a hood dryer. It will help the color last longer. Rinse thoroughly. Take a few minutes and rinse your hair thoroughly. Then shampoo to remove color residue. Do not use a clarifying shampoo for this step. A moisturizing shampoo will do. This step is optional for Adore Plus colorants.

Dip dyeing process for human hair wigs and extensions

To dye wigs, closures or bundles you need to do the following:

Add a bottle of Adore hair dye to about 32 ounces of boiling hot water.

Mix the color and water thoroughly with a plastic spoon, then dip your hair into the mixture.

Gently agitate the hair in the water for an even end result.

Adore permanent hair color

The instructions for permanent hair dye are slightly different. Here’s what you need to do:

Observe these precautions. Avoid using Adore hair dye if your hair or scalp is damaged. Open sores, uncontrolled rashes and natural scalp sensitivity count. If you suffer from skin problems, using the dye can make the situation worse. Do your skin test. Two days before coloring your hair, mix together a pea-sized amount of hair dye and developer and apply to the inside of your elbow. Check for skin irritation after 48 hours. If your skin is red, irritated, or itchy, do not use the color on your hair. Do a strand test. If you want to get a little taste of what your hair color will look like, follow these steps to do a strand test: Section off a tiny section of your hair and apply some tape to one end. Mix the hair color according to the instructions on the packaging and apply to the hair. Wait for the color to be processed. Wait up to 18 minutes and check the strand every now and then. Rinse the strand of hair thoroughly and then air dry. This is what your hair will look like. Shampoo your hair 24 hours before coloring. Separate your hair into sections using a wide-toothed comb or your fingers and secure each section with a clip. Mix up the color. Using the materials included in the kit, add equal parts hair color and developer and mix them with a coloring brush. The mixture should be smooth after blending. Apply the color. For an all over head application, apply the color to the gray hair in sections and then apply to the rest of your hair. Comb through your hair to ensure even coverage. For a touch-up, apply the color section by section to the new growth only – be careful not to apply it to your previously colored hair. Set a timer. After applying the color, set a timer: 7-8 minutes for non-grey hair. 17 to 18 minutes for gray hair. Rinse, shampoo and condition. When the time is up, rinse the color out of your hair, shampoo with your usual shampoo, then use the provided conditioner pack. If your hair is feeling really parched, consider using a deep conditioner as well.

Major things I did over the weekend: 1) watched Mad Max: Fury Road and 2) recolored my hair.

Yes, my hair is finally pink again. After it faded almost to blonde I figured it was time to recolor it and that I might as well snap some pics and post a little tutorial.

what you will need

1. Dye

You really only need one dye. I have three bottles here because I had a little bit of the lighter pink color left that I was going to use up and I like to mix a bit of purple with my pink.

I’ve been using Creative Image’s Adore for a while just because a bottle is pretty cheap (around $6) and the dye is pretty saturated so a small amount goes a long way. But I’ve also used Jerome Russell Punky Color and got good results.

The colors I used this time were Pink Petal (192), Purple Rage (116), and Pink Rose (82).

2. Conditioners

You mix dye with conditioner when you want to make the color lighter or when the dye you are using is a concentrated liquid like Adore dyes are. Don’t waste your money on any of those pastelizers or thinners that dye companies are trying to sell you. Any white conditioner will do the same.

3. Mixing/applying accessories

If you buy a dye kit, it will likely come with a small brush for mixing and applying the dye to your hair. If you don’t have one of these brushes, no problem. I usually use my hands to apply color to my hair and you can just use a plastic spoon to mix the color.

Make sure you have a plastic container to put your paint in. I use an empty plastic stained glass jar from Punky Color, but you can use something like a Tupperware container or plastic bowl.

If you want to avoid getting your skin dirty, wear plastic gloves when applying your paint and apply petroleum jelly to the skin at your hairline. However, color stains will fade after you’ve washed your skin a few times, so don’t worry about it too much.

4. light hair

I’m sorry but if you want to dye your hair a light color, it has to be blonde first. Otherwise, you’ll end up with just a muddy brown color or no noticeable color change at all. For most of us, that means bleaching. I bleach my hair myself, but if you’re nervous about it, just let a professional do it for you. Bleaching can be really bad for your hair if you don’t know what you’re doing.

the process

1. Mix your dye. Add a generous amount of conditioner to your container and slowly mix in the color until the mixture reaches a shade slightly darker than your desired hair color.

2. Apply the color to your hair. Once you have your beautiful conditioner-dye blend, start scooping it out and onto your hair. As I said, you can use a paintbrush to do this, but I’ve found it’s easier and faster to just use my hands. Make sure all of your hair is completely covered!

3. Wait. Most dyes will tell you to only leave it on for an hour, but I’ve found that’s generally not long enough for the color to apply evenly and last more than one wash. I usually leave the color in my hair for 2-3 hours but since I was stupid and applied my color late at night I just slept with it on during that time. The harm people talk about when coloring their hair comes from the bleaching process, not the color itself. Most unnatural dyes, like Adore, Manic Panic, Punky Color are herbal and will not harm your hair, no matter how long let the color sink in. And since you mix your color with conditioner, the longer you leave it in, the softer your hair will be!

I would recommend wearing a shower cap while you have dye in your hair. It keeps the color from drying out and creates some heat, which will help the color penetrate your hair better. Also, it reduces the chance of discoloring everything in your house.

4. Rinse. When you’re done leaving the color in your hair, rinse out with cold water – don’t wash out with shampoo. Shampoo and hot water are the enemies of colored hair.

Results

So the finished product. The dye was applied fairly evenly, with some patches being slightly darker or more orange than others. That’s probably just because I had an uneven color as a base. Not the dye’s fault. Also, I kind of like it when dye comes out a little unevenly – it gives it some dimension.

When it comes to my hair color, I’ve been pretty much a human-sized mood ring for the past five years. I got bored and switched shades every few months, from red to teal to purple, until finally last year I landed on my absolute favorite – pink. What can I say, the ROY G. BIV hair color spectrum is exactly how I want to express myself. The only problem? Maintenance is a real pain in the ass. Temporary color expires every time you shower, so your vibrant cyan can quickly fade to a sickly seafoam green within a few washes. Money down the drain, literally. Unfortunately, if you want to keep your colors bright and deep, you often have to reapply.

Since I don’t color my hair myself, it gets a little tedious. Sure, I’m brave when it comes to hair coloring, but I’ve seen too many do-it-yourself disaster bleach jobs and what Manic Panic doesn’t know is that I’m just not skilled enough to double-process my own hair. I’m willing to spend some money for professional salon coloring and peace of mind, and I’m fortunate to have the resources to devote to it. Aside from the color fading temporarily, I’ve spent more than I expected on touch-ups every four to six weeks. It was a real conundrum: how do I keep my favorite hair color without spending a fortune?

It turns out that necessity is indeed the mother of invention. My fear of mounting salon bills and impending bankruptcy (okay, a bit dramatic, but you get the picture) inspired me to experiment with ways to extend the life of my paint. I’ve had a few hits and misses over the years, but through trial and error I’ve honed my strategies. Below are my tried-and-true, expert-approved tips for pushing bold temporary paint to the limit.

1. After applying fresh color, wait at least 72 hours before shampooing.

When I first dyed my hair blue-green, I made the rookie mistake of shampooing the next day. My badass teal faded faster than a celebrity engagement. Lesson learned. Next time I waited a few days before the first post-dye wash. My color seemed to lock in and last longer. It turns out there’s a reason for that. “It can take about 72 hours for the cuticle layer to close and lock in the hair color,” says Y. Claire Chang, M.D., a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist at Union Square Laser Dermatology. “If you wait a full 72 hours to wash, you’ll see a significant difference in how long your color lasts,” adds hairstylist and salon owner Eva Scrivo. Now I wait at least three days—sometimes a full week—before washing them after a salon visit that gives my light shade Pink Palazzo (by Aloxxi) time to fully absorb.

2. Don’t wash your hair every day.

It’s common sense: if you lose color every time you wash your hair, wash it less often, you lose less color. On average, I wash mine twice a week and opt for dry shampoo to soak up oils. Sometimes, however, there is no substitute for dipping your head under a jet of rushing water. Between shampoo days, when I’m really itchy to rinse my scalp, I wash with a conditioner that’s specifically formulated for color-treated hair, as it’s gentler on the color than shampoo. My favorite is the Pureology Hydrate Sheer Conditioner. It is 100 percent vegan and silicone-free. Bonus tip: In general, it’s best to avoid silicone-based products, which take the shine out of color-treated hair, says Scrivo.

3. Rinse your hair with cooler water.

The temperature also plays a role in the water. Super hot water can damage the outer cuticle and make your hair more porous, says Dr. Chang. The result? Fresh hair color can easily escape through your wide open pores. To avoid fading, I wash on cooler temperatures. This is my least favorite part of the process because I love the feeling of having hot water pouring over my head. In the dead of winter, I shampoo and condition my hair with lukewarm water in the sink, then hop into a scorching hot shower with a shower cap on. In the warmer months, however, a lukewarm conditioner feels quite refreshing.

4. Try a color-applying product.

To extend the time between salon visits, one of my tricks is to use a color-depositing product. From root concealers like Rita Hazan’s Root Concealer Touch-Up Spray Temporary Gray Coverage to color-enhancing conditioners like Overtone, there are plenty of inexpensive DIY options to refresh your hair’s hue.

In my opinion, the holy grail of all coloring products is Viral Colorwash, a shampoo that not only prolongs the vibrancy of your hair color but also adds pigment. Spirit. Goes. Boom. When I first used this shampoo and saw my hair transform from faded pink to hot fuchsia, I literally did a happy dance. So how does it work its magic? The shampoo contains dyes that brighten and intensify the color with each wash. what’s more If I really want to liven up my pink, I just wash it twice. Just wear rubber gloves when shampooing; The dye is highly saturated and will stain your hands a little. Even though the Viral formula is sulfate-free and peroxide-free, I still find it a bit drying, so I alternate washing with AG Hair’s sulfate-free Color Savor Shampoo.

5. Avoid heat styling.

I rarely blow dry my hair mainly because I’m lazy and it’s time consuming. However, when it comes to extending hair color, doing nothing has its perks. Similar to rinsing your hair in hot water, “heat styling also opens up the hair’s cuticles, allowing the color to fade,” explains Scrivo. It turns out I was protecting my pink palazzo all along without even knowing it. But, as Maya Angelou said to Oprah, “When you know better, you do better.” Since I can’t avoid heat styling entirely (I’m a fan of a good wand and hair full of waves), I have to go with one Prepare heat protection product. I’m thinking of trying Tresemme’s Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Spray. It’s received more than four-star reviews from more than 400 Ulta buyers, and at a budget-friendly $5.49, it won’t break the bank.

6. Minimize your hair’s exposure to the sun.

You may love those adorable sun-kissed highlights you get every summer, but if you’re a fuchsia hair freak like me, the sun isn’t your friend. Since I was 30 I have become a vampire and avoid the sun at all costs to maintain healthy skin. But our hair is not immune to sun damage either. according to dr Chang can cause excessive sun exposure, including UVA and UVB rays, to damage your hair’s proteins and break down its pigment, leading to dryness and discoloration.

“Think about what usually happens to curtains and furniture left uncovered in a light-filled room,” says Scrivo. To prevent fading from sunlight, I cover my head when I know I will be in the sun for an extended period of time. I like big-brimmed hats on the beach and lightweight bandanas when jogging.

At the moment you might be thinking of no sun and cold showers; This color care business is all work and no fun. Temporary color is certainly not for the casual, but if you follow these strategies, I promise your color will stay as bright and badass as it was the day you left the salon.
