Trevor: Hello, my name is Trevor Malloy and I work for a company called 3S Chemicals. We are a chemical diving company that removes paint and rust from classic cars for people to restore.

The customer starts with the complete dismantling of the vehicle.

And then we take it and dip it in our alkaline paint stripper and they stay in the tank for about a day. We take it out every other day and then pressure wash it until all the paint is gone because there can be different coats of paint, you have your paint, then you have your primer, you have your putty, undercoat.

Once everything is removed, it goes into the acid bath. Our acid bath is specifically designed to remove rust, nothing more. And we pull it out every other day too. And it will be neutralized after being poured into our alkaline bath. That way the acid doesn’t rust further as the acid easily attacks the metal.

Then it is pressure washed until all rust is removed.

Once all the rust is removed, our third step and chemical is our water-based rust preventative. And we dip it in the water-based rust preventative to stop further rusting until you’re ready to paint.

I think chemical dipping is the most thorough method to remove all paint and rust from a car body. It gets to places physical media can’t reach, like sandblasting or media blasting. How do you apply Plasti Dip?

Plasti Dip is usually sprayed from a rattle can, but is also available in gallon buckets, which is cheaper than multiple spray cans when dipping larger areas. You can mix paint from multiple buckets and spray with any paint gun compatible with Plasti Dip.

Some wheels are prone to rot and corrosion and there are a number of ways to treat this. Some companies “blast” or “grit blast” wheels to remove all paint and corrosion.

We find this to be a tough process and can cause pitting; That’s why we now use the latest techniques, where we remove all paint and corrosion in an acid bath. This is done at our depot. Due to the strength of the acid used, we are unable to do this through the mobile service. You can have your wheels painted in the original color or if you want a change we can mix any color you want. If you have a specific color you would like, you can provide us with a color code and we will match it. The steps for deacidifying and powder coating are as follows:

At Diamond Alloys we believe in providing a superior finish to our commercial and retail customers. Achieving a good finish can depend heavily on the preparation of the wheel prior to painting. Many wheels arrive at our London Alloy Wheel Reconditioning Center with a great deal of corrosion caused by water and particularly salt water which will attack the alloy if the protective paint layer is damaged by curbs or spalling.

These images show what alloy wheel corrosion looks like, which can be quite advanced if not dealt with quickly, and will most likely contribute to the loss of air in your tires. However, you do not have to spend a lot of money to buy new alloy wheels. Although this damage looks bad, it can be removed simply by soaking in an acid bath. The alloy needs to stay in acid for some time depending on the excess and our trained technicians can assess this. Acid is dangerous, so we recommend that you let experts like us do this task.

Once the corrosion has been removed from your alloy wheels it is washed off and then goes to our prep room where any damage is repaired. After this stage we would powder coat each wheel to ensure a smooth and even finish is achieved before any color or diamond cut is applied.

Applying lacquer is a very important step as it gives the alloy a protective layer to prevent water from getting onto the metal and causing further corrosion damage.
