New research from find-a-tradesperson platform Rated People shows homeowners’ desire for renovations has gone through the roof in 2021. Almost half (49%) of UK residents have renovated their homes and the demand for tradespeople has increased by 32% in just one year. Nearly two in three tradespeople (62%) say last year was “the busiest year they’ve ever had”. In fact, demand for home improvement has increased by 50% compared to when the pandemic began in 2020.

Findings come from the Rated People Home Improvement Trends Report 2022 and the study shows that 77% of UK handymen saw increased customer demand in 2021 and nine in ten (89%) say demand increased in 2021.

But they have also been beset by a range of challenges – nearly nine in 10 tradespeople (89%) say their costs have increased in 2021, 84% have had material supply issues and just under half (44%) have had staff shortages.

As a result, four in five tradespeople (83%) have had to increase their prices and almost two-thirds (62%) have had to postpone or cancel orders.

More than one in three tradespeople (43%) also said the challenges of the past year had led to increased stress levels, and a quarter (25%) said they felt drained. But one in three UK tradespeople (34%) also said the opportunities presented by increased demand led to an increased sense of motivation, and a quarter (27%) said they felt more job satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment recently to have had year.

Not surprisingly, Covid was a major cause of disruption in 2021, but the main reason for cancellations and delays was actually material shortages, with 44% of tradespeople saying they had to postpone or cancel work due to supply issues.

There are numerous opportunities to train to become a plumber in the UK. Whether you are a school leaver looking for an apprenticeship or an adult looking to retrain as a plumber, in this article we will explain the various options.

Can you become a plumber without a degree?

You can do an apprenticeship as a plumber at:

Completion of a traditional apprenticeship

Completion of a fast track plumbing course

Works as a fellow plumber

Traditional plumbing apprenticeship

The traditional way to get started is a classic four-year apprenticeship as a plumber. To do this, you must be employed by a plumbing company that gives you access to on-site work experience.

Training is typically delivered in block classes over the four years, with one week of theory and practice and two weeks of working alongside a plumber, repeated throughout this four year programme.

As a rule, in the third year of your apprenticeship you will complete an apprenticeship on the subject of home heating, which will enable you to become Gas Safe Registered at the end of your apprenticeship.

The last year of your training is all about gaining professional experience, which you use as a “time out” after successful completion.

Advantages:

The training is sponsored, so it doesn’t cost you anything.

You have a long study and graduation period.

Lots of experience working with a local tradesman.

You earn a small income while training.

Disadvantages:

It takes four years to qualify, which means it takes longer to reach your earning potential.

There aren’t many companies left that can afford to hire trainees.

Opportunities are usually only available to students aged 16-21.

Some of the curricula covered are not always required, e.g. B. Lead work.

Fast track courses for installers

There are a variety of fast track plumbing courses available for students who want to quickly train to become a plumber. These courses are not as in-depth as traditional apprenticeships, but cover the key components needed to start your plumbing career.

In general, this is the best option for those who cannot find an apprenticeship.

The City and Guild Accredited Level 2 Diploma in Plumbing Studies is the most popular option for fast track plumbing courses and takes 8-10 weeks to complete.

Advantages:

The training is accredited and teaches you the basics to qualify.

The training takes only 8-10 weeks, so you can start making money faster.

Anyone over the age of 16 can take the course.

The training will prepare you for later further training, e.g. e.g. registration as Gas Safe.

Disadvantages:

You must pay to complete the training.

The course will not be as in-depth as traditional training.

There is no on-site work experience.

They are not trained to work with gas.

Works as a fellow plumber

If you know someone in the industry, you could start out as a plumber’s assistant or “buddy” and pursue on-the-job training. This path is not typically recommended as it will not get you qualified, but can be a good way to start your career in plumbing.

Advantages:

Start earning right away

Gain useful on-site plumbing experience

Disadvantages:

Won’t qualify you

You will not reach your true earning potential

How long does it take to become a plumber?

Plumbing training may vary depending on the options you choose. A traditional apprenticeship takes up to four years, while a fast track plumbing course can last anywhere from 4 to 16 weeks. If you also want to work on gas equipment, the training will take around 6 months if you choose the Fast Track course.

What does a plumber do?

In this role you could be:

Measure and plan to provide cost and time estimates

Cutting, bending and connecting pipes and fittings

Installation of water, sewage and heating systems

Find and fix bugs

Servicing gas and oil fired central heating and radiators

Installation and repair of household appliances such as showers and washing machines

Dealing with emergency calls such as boiler failures or clogged drains

Attaching weatherproof materials, joints and sheet metal to roofs, chimneys and walls

How Much Does a Plumber Earn?

The average wage for a plumber is £15.80 an hour. This depends on your experience, your location and whether you have the qualifications to work on gas appliances.

According to the National Careers Service, the average starting salary for a plumber is £15,000 a year, rising to £40,000 a year with experience.

However, it is not uncommon for some installers to earn over £100,000 a year. The Daily Mail wrote an article about a plumber working for Pimlico Plumbers who made £210,000 in one year.

Pimlico Plumbers owner Mr Mullins estimates that around a dozen of his 225 tradesmen make £200,000 or more a year and around half earn £100,000 or more.

What are the working hours of a plumber?

It is estimated that a plumber typically works 37-40 hours per week. However, self-employed people often find that their working hours can be significantly longer. To attract the top earners, you need to work outside of normal hours and do emergency work like burst water pipes or boiler failures.

It’s not uncommon for installers to charge upwards of £100 an hour for after-hours emergencies.

Here’s what Pimlico plumbers charge:

Monday-Friday 7am-6pm: £105 per hour

Monday-Friday 6pm-12am: £140 per hour

Saturday-Sunday 7am-6pm: £140 per hour

Saturday-Sunday 6pm-12am: £160 per hour

Are plumbers in demand?

It’s Britain’s worst kept secret that plumbers are in high demand. A study by HPM Magazine has shown that a shortage of skilled workers and poor training opportunities are the most pressing concerns in the industry.

More than half (56%) of those surveyed said that skills shortages are the number one threat facing the plumbing industry today. Still, more than four-fifths (86%) of plumbers would recommend it as a career, thanks to the abundance of work and high levels of job satisfaction.

Why is there a high demand for plumbers in the UK?

Leaving specialists:

Many qualified and experienced installers are of retirement age. While good plumbers still exist, many of the experienced plumbers are retiring.

Lack of Funding:

A lack of investment is partly responsible for the lack of apprenticeships. Traditionally, there have been many opportunities to find an apprenticeship, but cutbacks and lack of funding mean fewer apprenticeships are advertised each year.

Career choice and perceived stigmatization

Craftsmen who are about to retire grew up in a different world than their successors. Those who choose to get an education are not perceived by society as being as successful as those who have completed higher education. It’s fair to say that the plumbing profession carries a negative stigma.

Career development for plumbers

You can advance your career as a plumber by completing your ACS Gas qualification, which allows you to become Gas Safe Registered and work on household gas appliances. The Skills Training Group gas heating installer course can train installers to become gas safety qualified in just 18 weeks.

You can also become certified with the Oil Firing Technical Association (OFTEC) by completing the OFTEC Skills Training Group Oil course, which will enable you to install, maintain, and repair oil-fired equipment.

Brits search Google for local handymen over 700,000 times a month, and now a new study has revealed which of the trades are most in demand.

The study, conducted by IronmongeryDirect, the UK’s largest retailer of specialty hardware, analyzed search data from across the country and found that plumbers are the most sought-after.

Every month Brits conduct 162,415 searches for plumbers, which is 23% of all online trade enquiries.

In fact, plumbers are the most sought-after tradespeople in 82 of the UK’s top 100 cities.

The most popular trades across the UK are:

A banker left his job to start a successful plumbing business – because he could make more money as a handyman.

Alex Taskun was working as a banker and was making $90,000 when he decided the job wasn’t for him and went to Cambodia to work as a plumber.

When he returned to Australia eight years later he founded GT Plumbing which he grew into a booming business earning him a six figure salary.

According to contract website ServiceSeeking.com.au, plumbing is one of the highest-paying trades in the country.

Data found in the 2020 Tradie Rich List revealed the most lucrative businesses, with plumbers with an average salary of $110,000 topping the list.

At 41, Mr. Taskun attributes his successful business and six-figure salary to putting in the long hours and building rapport with his clients.

He said the key to his success is that he refuses to advertise on Google and works hard, sometimes working more than 16 hours a day.

“The hours I put in are really tough, 16 hours a day, seven days a week,” he told the Daily Mail Australia.

“Sunday doesn’t matter, holidays don’t matter. There’s a difference between people who work 38 to 40 hours a day and people who work 16 hours a day.’

But he wasn’t always a successful businessman.

When he was 29, he decided to quit his nine-to-five job as a $90,000 a year banker and volunteered in Cambodia to help people affected by drinking bad water got sick.

“On the Vietnam-Cambodia border, people were drinking from groundwater, getting sick and getting cancer, so I took up plumbing work,” Mr Taskun said.

“You can treat water and give them access to clean water.”

The 41-year-old was working as a banker when he went to Cambodia to volunteer and help people who became ill from drinking bad water

Mr. Tuskan decided to change his career when he volunteered in Cambodia

Splitting his time between Australia and Cambodia, he worked as an unpaid volunteer for eight years before returning three years ago.

“I went back to Australia three years ago… I couldn’t do it anymore because of all the trauma, I’ve seen too much,” he said.

Mr Taskun said he works with subcontractors but they typically work eight hours a day, five days a week.

The business owner said one of his biggest challenges is finding good apprentices because there’s a “perception that you can just finish tenth year and become a plumber because they make good money”.

But Mr Taskun said there’s a lot that makes a plumber: “You can die from cross-contamination of the water, we can cause carbon monoxide poisoning”.

“We are intelligent people, we study for seven years.” he said.

Mr. Taskun pays his top-level employees between $80 and $90 an hour, which works out to $720 a day.

He said the key to his success is that he refuses to advertise on Google and works hard, sometimes working more than 16 hours a day

Mr. Taskun doesn’t pressure his employees to work long hours since his subcontractors work eight hours a day, five days a week

But its entry-level employees are paid up to $450 a day, which can still add up to more than $100,000.

The 41-year-old said being a plumber takes a lot of self-discipline.

“It must be an obsession. I work 16 hours but I don’t feel it because I love what I do,” he said.

“If you love what you do and you’re good at it, it helps with discipline and puts a lot of things in perspective. You are much more patient and you can learn how to turn a bad situation into a good one.’

Mr Taskun said he lives a much more flexible lifestyle now that he is his own boss and his family and friends would understand when he had to leave dinner early for an emergency call.

When asked what advice he would give to those considering the trade, he gave an important warning: “You have to be able to take the bad smell.”

He said that although he deals with feces every day, some of the worst odors are grease and grease.

“I was once asked by a millionaire what I love about my job, literally, when a motherfucking volcano came out of its drain, and I told him, ‘No matter who you are – everyone is equal,'” Mr Taskun said.

“We see the same thing every day. day in, day out It puts things into perspective.”

Mr Taskun also warned that plumbers must work well under pressure, be willing to dig and will thrive if they get along with people.

“It will help you with commitment, you need a good support network,” he said.

But they have also been beset by a range of challenges – nearly nine in 10 tradespeople (89%) say their costs have increased in 2021, 84% have had material supply issues and just under half (44%) have had staff shortages.

As a result, four in five tradespeople (83%) have had to increase their prices and almost two-thirds (62%) have had to postpone or cancel orders.

43% also said the challenges of the past year caused them to feel elevated levels of stress, and a quarter said they felt drained. But one in three UK tradespeople (34%) also said the opportunities presented by increased demand meant they felt more motivated and more than a quarter (27%) said they did had higher job satisfaction and an increased sense of accomplishment last year.

Material and staff shortages

Unsurprisingly, COVID was a leading cause of disruption in 2021, but the number one reason for cancellations and delays was actually material shortages, with 44% of tradespeople reporting they had to postpone or cancel work due to supply issues.

Supply problems were felt throughout the industry. Plasterers were hit the hardest, but almost all trades were hit by bottlenecks. Between 75% and 96% of the 10 most affected trades found it difficult to obtain the materials they needed, including 77% of installers.

In 2021, too, many craft businesses experienced staff and contractor shortages, with the main causes being COVID isolation and the shortage of skilled workers.

Increased costs mean increased prices for homeowners

Nine in ten tradesmen (91%) expect costs to increase this year, and 91% of heating contractors plan to increase their prices in 2022.

Brits search Google for local handymen over 700,000 times a month, and now a new study has revealed which of the trades are most in demand.

The study, conducted by IronmongeryDirect, the UK’s largest retailer of specialty hardware, analyzed search data from across the country and found that plumbers are the most sought-after.

Every month Brits conduct 162,415 searches for plumbers, which is 23% of all online trade enquiries.

In fact, plumbers are the most sought-after tradespeople in 82 of the UK’s top 100 cities.
