One of the best ways to improve your screenwriting skills is to spend a lot of time exploring the structure and format of great films. Thankfully, there are plenty of great scripts out there on the internet, many of which are free to download.

Break your writer’s block! In the following post, we have listed 9 websites where you can find free screenplays from a variety of movies.

Simply Scripts is a great script database where you can find scripts for film, television, radio, musicals, plays and unproduced projects. From Interstellar to Singing’ in the Rain, you’ll likely find the screenplay you’re looking for here. There’s a reason Simply Scripts is at the top of our list!

The Internet Movie Script Database is another great place to find scripts for movies old and new. IMSDb even allows users to sort by genre, making it easier to locate just action or comedy movies. Scripts can also be rated on IMSDb, which is nice as sometimes scripts found online are fake and not the actual script used for the film.

Weekly Script releases a new script every week for your reading pleasure. Rather than relying on having the largest library, the Weekly Script gets its charm from curating great scripts. The site is also incredibly easy to navigate and minimal. In the words of the author “If you can’t find your way around on this page, you shouldn’t be on the web!”

Screenplays for You is a screenplay database – no frills, just screenplays. SFY has hundreds of screenplays spanning decades of filmmaking. Most of the scripts found here are shooting drafts, which means they are formatted as the script looked during production, and not a reproduced script that was written after the film was released.

If you are a screenwriter, John August is a great person to know. His site has scripts, schedules, breakdowns, and blueprints for reference. You won’t find many scripts, but the ones available are all of high quality. John August is also the host of the Scriptnotes podcast, where he joins Craig Mazin to talk about screenwriting and scripts.

If the Weekly Script wasn’t enough for you, you’ll love the Daily Script. The site has one of the largest collections of scripts online, as well as an extensive collection of television scripts.

In accordance with the Daily Script, Movie Scripts and Screenplays is a factual website with scripts, links and… that’s it! The site doesn’t seem to be actively updated, so go elsewhere if you’re looking for an up-to-date script.

If you like horror movies then Horror Lair is the place for you. Horror Lair has hundreds of screenplays that all fall into the horror genre. Try it if you dare.

You already know NoFilmSchool as a great place to find filmmaking news and information, but did you know they’ve also started sharing scripts? NFS author Christopher Boone has been writing articles with links to film scripts for the past few weeks, and the list is getting pretty long. You can see all 2014 screenplay articles on the NoFilmSchools website.

What is the theme of the best man?

Much of the book centers on Archer’s relationships with his male role models. They all bring something different to his life and help him grow into a good young man. The story is funny, poignant, and heartwarming. It’ll give younger readers a lot to think about while also entertaining them.

The Best Man Holiday

I’ve read a lot by Richard Peck over the years and this book was the first to disappoint me. First off, unless you’re very liberal about gay marriage, you won’t like this book. It may only be a side story, but if you insist that marriage should follow God’s plan of one man and one woman, you will not want your child reading this. It definitely feels like an LGBTQ-oriented book to indoctrinate kids that gay marriage is okay because it’s all about “love.” If that’s what you’re looking for, you’ll probably like it. More disturbing was the depiction of bullying at school. Is this really how schools are now? When children are tied up in the bathroom??? Oh man. The adults at the school were incompetent, which is common in a children’s book to make it seem like a ‘kid’s world’, but given the shocking (to me) abuse of the bullies, I was genuinely concerned. Not for me. Not for my children. I recommend reading.

The Best Man is a very entertaining romantic comedy.

The Best Man Holiday

I was surprised to see how little attention this film drew despite its amazing cast and intelligent script. Character-based scripts walk a delicate line, but somehow most seem to get unworthy praise (St. Elmo’s Fire, The Big Chill). Not to sound like a self-righteous broken record, but I genuinely think “The Best Man” was passed over because it happened to have an African American cast. It was immediately labeled a “black” movie before anyone bothered to watch more than the trailer, which is a shame because what everyone missed out on was a good movie.

Characters range from classic (Morris Chestnut’s Lance) to surprisingly fresh (Terrence Howard’s Quentin), all with vastly different personalities but believable connections. (Am I the only one who’s tired of using the “went to college together” excuse for why some movie characters are friends when the “cool rebel” isn’t really hanging out with the “prude nerd”?” etc.)

Not only does the film have refreshing takes on the characters’ interdimensional relationships, it’s not afraid to go honest with the characters, pointing out each individual’s flaws… they have depth, soul, contradictions, just like REAL PEOPLE! Great! The themes are universal; Friends, Love, Mistakes, Forgiveness. The dialogue is funny, but not overly made to sound like “movie dialogue” that nobody speaks in the real world.

And while the race of the characters doesn’t matter in this film, I applaud Malcolm D. Lee for writing a film with black characters, all of whom are successful, independent, and intelligent. Nobody raps or deals drugs, nobody blames the man for setbacks. The characters actually represent the MAJORITY of the black community, just regular people going about their lives. How refreshing given the Hollywood stereotypes that America’s white suburbs believe that every successful black man is a rapper or basketball player and everyone else is a criminal or janitor. It’s a shame this movie didn’t make any money, maybe then we’d see more of that trend, movies that are script based rather than race based.

Although I loved it, this film probably won’t change your life. It’s not one that will ever be considered one of the greatest films of all time (although I think it took bold steps to close the film’s racing gap). And I’m not saying it’s an absolute must for everyone. But for discerning viewers with maybe a little taste and hunger for something different, I suggest you treat yourself to something you probably haven’t seen in a long time: a simply good movie.

What is IMDb short for?

The Internet Movie Database (IMDb) is an online database containing information and statistics about movies, TV shows and video games as well as actors, directors and other film industry professionals.

The Best Man Holiday

The Internet Movie Database (IMDb) is an online database of information and statistics about movies, television shows, and video games, as well as actors, directors, and other motion picture industry professionals. This information may include cast and crew member lists, movie release and box office dates, plot synopses, trailers, actor and director biographies, and other odds and ends.

Information on IMDb comes from a variety of sources, such as filmmakers, film studios, on-screen credits, and other official sources. However, much of the information comes from IMDb users themselves, who can submit facts in a wiki format. Unlike traditional wiki sites, IMDb always authenticates information before it appears online – although bugs do crop up, and the site allows users to report potential bugs so they can be fixed.

Users can also rate movies and TV shows on a scale of one to ten, which are then used to create a weighted average of all user ratings displayed on the movie or TV show page. Also, these ratings are used to compile IMDb’s top rated and bottom rated lists of movies and TV shows.

IMDb was first released in 1990 by Col Needham, a computer programmer, as a set of scripts that allowed users to search a list of movie credits compiled with the help of a USENET group. The database was incorporated in 1996. In 1998 Internet Movie Database Ltd. a subsidiary of Amazon, which uses it to advertise the films and DVDs it sells on its main website.

In 2002, IMDb launched its paid subscription service for film industry professionals, IMDbPro. IMDbPro allows actors, directors and other professionals to manage their IMDb page, upload their resume and access richer information not available on the free version of the site.

In addition to the IMDb website, the company offers a mobile app available for iOS, Android, and Amazon Kindle Fire devices. The website has also been translated into German, French, Spanish, Danish, Finnish, Hungarian, Italian, Polish, Portuguese and Romanian.

Send your script: How to get your script in the right hands

And it’s complete. Your screenplay, your magnum opus, is finally complete and ready to be turned into a major film. But where to send? After all, you can’t just write “Hollywood” on an envelope.

Have you written a story just begging to be told? Is that document on your laptop a surefire bet on sweet Oscar gold?

If you’re confident in the script you’re writing but don’t know which paths to take to make your dream a reality, we have some tips for you.

Write a great screenplay for a movie

Before you try to sell a script, make sure it’s as good as it can be. Let your friends and family read it and accept the feedback they give.

Note that we said “great” not “good”. There are thousands of good screenplays by writers who are already in Hollywood. Those trying to break into the industry need to sell a top-notch product.

Before Ben Affleck and Matt Damon were famous movie stars, they worked on the screenplay for Good Will Hunting, which earned them an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Unfortunately, it probably won’t happen that way for you.

The chances of your first screenplay becoming an instant hit are, to put it politely, slim.

Submitting a great script is not directly related to the production of the film. What’s more common is that your great script is put aside while you’re hired to write or present other projects.

For this reason, it will always do you good to have one or two high-quality scripts lying around.

Get an agent

We get it; You want your script to get into the hands of as many producers as possible. But sending unsolicited emails with your manuscript is the quickest way to the trash.

Producers receive many scripts. Most studios do not accept unsolicited scripts or even have the option to submit them. The best thing you can do is get some kind of representation.

A literary agent has the right contacts to get your screenplay into the hands of Hollywood professionals. An agent doesn’t guarantee that your script will be produced, but it will increase your status and get your script known around town.

Another possible option is to start writing in a separate space and work your way into Hollywood.

Often, first-time screenwriters don’t come from obscurity, but enter the industry by writing novels, plays, or articles for magazines. A literary agent will also help you in this endeavor.

It’s a blow to your confidence, but you have to be a household name before Hollywood is willing to look your way. If your name is linked to a best-selling novel or is in the running for a Tony, it will definitely amplify your signal.

Sign up for the blacklist

This is only an option for those who are serious about getting their scripts into the hands of producers as it will cost a lot of editing.

The Black List is an annual survey of unproduced screenplays treasured by Hollywood executives. Being blacklisted improves the chances of your scripts being detected astronomically.

Since 2005, when the Black List poll was first conducted, 400 of the Black List screenplays have been produced. And since Hollywood only releases about 300 films a year, that’s a pretty good success rate.

Blacklisted screenplays also have a proven track record of bringing home the gold. Of the last 10 Best Picture winners, four were Blacklisted finalists.

The Blacklist currently has an online community where writers can submit and host their scripts to be read, professionally critiqued, and even purchased if they pique someone’s interest.

However, submitting your script and keeping it on the blacklist site costs money. Non-guild members pay a monthly fee of $30 per script kept on the site. For $75 you can get a review from a professional reader.

The reviews are the most useful part of the Black List. Critics will read your script thoroughly and give you hints about its feature film potential. This critique will help you determine if screenplay writing is the right field for you.

Get to know some producers

An often overlooked first step to getting your script in the hands of the right people is knowing the right people. Film festivals are the closest thing to a careers fair in the film industry.

Once you’ve finished a screenplay, go to a film festival and see if you can rub elbows with some of the directors, producers, or even actors from the films featured. Give them a brief synopsis of your film and have your contact details ready.

Never give a producer a printed copy of your screenplay. That only makes you want to be picked up by security. Be personable and have a pitch that people will care about.

Become part of the industry

A surefire way to meet people in the film industry is to work in the film industry. Getting into the lower reaches of Hollywood is far from impossible, even if you don’t know anyone.

Now make no mistake: your first job in the industry will not be a glamorous one. Chances are you’ll be holding a boom mic or tending to the craft food service table. These jobs are nothing special, but they are important.

In addition, they give you the opportunity to get some recognition for your hard work and maybe talk to the people who make things happen.

Make your movie

We’ve said it before: the chances of this script being made into a film are high. But it’s far from impossible.

If you have more questions about how to get your work noticed or how to tell if your script is ready for the big leagues, keep reading our blog.

Remember, no matter what path to success you choose, it won’t be easy. But putting in the effort to produce your script will pay off when you finally see it on the big screen.

In that time, it has amassed a wealth of screenplays. These range from new scripts to classic and everything in between.

At the top of the site, they have categorized the numerous different types of scripts that they have available on their site. This spans film, TV, radio, anime, Oscar winners and non-English films:

This app can be downloaded from the Apple App Store and has an extremely large selection of movie scripts for you to read.

The benefits of using this app? Now you can access your phone with just one touch and download PDFs of your favorite screenplays.

It offers a whole new experience when reading scripts and is extremely convenient on the go.

Weekend Read is a simple but brilliant free app. But what really sets it apart is its rotating library of film scripts, drawn from a variety of sources but all curated by professional screenwriters.

The clue is in the name and that sneaky extra letter. IMSDb aspires to be the IMDb for movie scripts.

billing itself as

“The biggest screenwriting resource on the web!”

, there are hundreds of scripts that can be found here.

All are presented in HTML format, which is not so easy to download but comfortable to read and browse in your web browser.

This site claims to be “the largest movie script resource on the web.” So, with that claim already, it is important that you check this site out to see if it offers what you are looking for.

The website is visually user-friendly.

On the right side of the page is the Recent Releases section, which lists the latest movies and screenplays that you might want to read. Have you just been to the cinema and seen a film that you liked? This is exactly the kind of place where you can just go to the homepage and find the script for it.

There is a search bar on the left side of the screen where you can type the title of the movie you are looking for.

Additionally, there is both an alphabetical section and a genre section underneath. Additionally, the genre section is extremely easy to understand and follow.

action

comedy

family

horror

romance

thriller

War

adventure

crime

fantasy

musical

science fiction

Western film

In addition, they have also created a TV Transcripts section underneath which includes:

futurama

His field

South Park

Stargate SG-1

Lost

The 4400

Finally, there is an international area below it – however, only French transcripts are currently stored here. Nonetheless, for those interested in French cinema, this is an important and rare resource.

Another website to check out is The Daily Script. Similar to the previous sites, this one is extremely user friendly and has sections depending on what you are looking for.

The scripts on the website are industry standard and are presented in industry standard format. In some cases, they may provide multiple drafts of some scripts for viewers to follow the writing process.

While The Daily Script is no longer updated with the frequency its name would suggest, it has still amassed a very respectable collection of movie scripts.

The date and version of the draft are given where possible so that work in progress can be compared with the finished film.

The BBC is one of the premier destinations for great TV drama and comedy. The Writers Room site is full of valuable, practical advice, opportunities, and even a window where they accept unwanted material. It is in itself an abbreviation for new and exciting writing.

The script department isn’t bad either. There are plenty of these from across the UK channel’s history, with the ability to search by drama, comedy or children’s scripts and also sort by date. This extends across film and television, as does the BBC itself.

The Writer Development section is divided into two subsections: Drama Room and Comedy Room. In these two subsections there is a large amount of resources and articles designed to help you with script development and your journey into the industry.

With the Writer Development section, there are also live links to discussion groups and a TV drama writer program.

The site aims to provide resources for aspiring writers and those interested in the development process.

TV scripts are quite distinct, from their structure and storytelling to the specifics of the format.

This website has a great collection of material from popular shows. Go beyond just reading pilots to compare scripts from different episodes across the run of a show.

This is an important tool because the writing can often be varied across a series, with different authors, writing styles, and writing intentions (to convey drama, suspense, tragedy, comedy).

Several exhibition Bibles are also available.

These are detailed documents that lay out everything a show should be and keep the writers on the same page. They provide a fascinating and instructive read on how a television series is created from the ground up.

Similar to the BBC website, this website also has a career-focused approach. It focuses both on providing TV fans with the scripts of the television shows they love and on providing aspiring writers with scripts to learn from and incorporate into their own work.

tv writing says:

“These scripts are here because the only way to learn how to write a television script is to read LOTS of other television scripts, and there aren’t many places where you can do that.”

The website is very interested in interacting with and helping its visitors. They welcome people who submit their own texts for review, having already analyzed and learned from the scripts on the site.

The website itself is easy to use and navigate. Similar to the previous sites, there is a toolbar at the top of the site, divided into the following sections:

home

UK TV

US drama

US comedy

bibles

How do I get a screenwriter?

Visit the writing department of local colleges and universities. Meet with teachers and professors to find the best screenwriters from the student body and offer them an internship or part-time job writing your story into a screenplay.

The Best Man Holiday

You have a great story and you want to see it on the big screen one day. The characters are believable, the locations are within a reasonable budget, and the plot is full of twists and turns. The only problem is that you can’t write – especially in screenplay format – and need to find someone to pen it for you. Luckily, there are a few ways for you to find the perfect, prolific screenwriter to bring your original story to life.

Advertise online and in print publications. There are sites like Craigslist where individuals can advertise screenwriters for free. Find out about movie releases and the methods and costs you can use to place an ad for your search. Some of them can be expensive but are well worth the cost if you find a qualified individual interested in working with you. Many film and screenwriting associations also have websites that allow free ads to be placed.

Attend screenwriter meetings and film meetings. If you live near a big city, there are usually many writers groups that meet regularly and they are a veritable gold mine when looking for professional and aspiring writers. Before doing so, call the club’s contact person or president and let them know what you are looking for. She may have some suggestions for you to follow up on before you arrive at the meeting. Ask for an opportunity to talk about your search and requirements; There will almost certainly be a person looking for a chance to prove themselves in the film industry.

Contact film agents, actors, directors, producers and anyone else involved in film. They know reputable writers from their previous film work and current associations who may be able to help you tell your story in a personal and professional way. Their input is particularly helpful as they have first-hand experience filming specific screenplays and know the quality of a person’s screenwriting skills.

Make an appointment with the head of your local or state film commission. The purpose of this state or city office is to encourage and support filmmakers in writing and producing films in their area to create jobs and area growth. They work closely with everyone in the community involved in the film business. The Best Man Holiday

Write and deliver an awesome groomsman speech with this foolproof advice.

Congratulations – you are the best man. It’s a good feeling when one of your loved ones asks you to be their right hand man for the wedding. But aside from the fun and harmless best man duties, like planning an epic Bach party or smashing the dance floor, your final (and arguably most meaningful) duty is delivering a heartfelt best man speech. Whether you’re a public pro or getting nervous just thinking about it, increase your chances of making your best man speech a success by using our helpful tips, ideas and examples for inspiration.

In this article:

How long should a best man speech be?

In general, keep the speech no longer than five minutes and at least three minutes. That’s enough time to say something meaningful before guests get too nervous. Of course you should adapt your speech length to the event. Speaking at a last-minute wedding may require a short speech, while a formal affair may require a longer toast.

5 tips for a best man speech

If you have the honor of being the best man, you’re probably wondering how to write a best man speech. The good news is that there are several great best man speech tips to increase your chances of success, says Dominic Bliss, wedding writer and author of Being the Best Man for Dummies. Check out these helpful tips below to minimize pre-speech jitter and ensure smooth delivery.

1. Plan ahead.

The first tip in our guide to writing a best man speech is to start ahead of time. (Don’t hesitate.) “Start writing a best man speech at least two months before the wedding,” says Bliss. “As the wedding approaches, there are many events — suit fittings and a coed shower maybe — that might keep you from getting your writing done.” Brainstorm and jot down any stories, jokes, or quotes that you want to include in your speech. The more time you have to prepare your groomsman speech, the better. So you can be fully present at upcoming wedding celebrations.

2. Be real.

Whether the wedding guests are strangers or family members, it can be nerve-wracking to deliver your best man speech with all eyes on you. To ease the awkwardness, share anecdotes and stories about the relationship you have with the couple. Everyone loves a bit of nostalgia – and guests get to know you better.

With that said, stick to your normal behavior while delivering your speech. You don’t have to change who you really are for a fictional person speaking publicly. If you feel more comfortable cracking jokes during your speech, do it. If you’re better at being sentimental and don’t mind leaving everyone bleary-eyed, go for this approach. Remember that the couple chose you to speak at their wedding because they felt you could add something special to their big day. As long as you give a heartfelt speech, the newlyweds and guests will love it.

3. Know what topics to avoid.

There are a few topics that should be left out of the best man speech. No matter how funny you (and even the groom) might find them, someone will definitely be offended or put off if you mention:

negativity about marriage in general.

past relationships.

Previous marriages/divorces.

Alcohol, Drugs, Gambling.

“Adult” humor or any other mention of sex.

After all, your best man speech should celebrate the newlywed couple and their love, rather than cause future friction.

4. Write it down.

Even those with great memories will feel more confident with a written speech — or at least a few bullet points to keep you on track. Nerves can mess with your memory, so don’t think you’re a loser if you have to bring notes with you. (Even CEOs do this at corporate events.) Bliss suggests using small note cards instead of a piece of paper because they “don’t flap around.”

These days, many groomsmen will want to read their cell phone screens for convenience, but wedding planners discourage it. Your phone screen lighting can ruin wedding photographer photos and distract guests. Instead, practice writing down your speech — it’s pretty comforting.

5. Practice – with an audience.

This tip is a must when it comes to how to write a best man speech. Even if you think you’ve got it all covered, practice speaking out loud at least three times. If you’re alone, record a video and watch the replay to get a feel for how your speech is going. (Are you saying “um” between each sentence? Are your gestures a little robotic?) If your friends can’t offer personal criticism, “send it [the video] to a close friend who won’t be going to the wedding and who will give you an honest feedback,” says Bliss.

Finally: Don’t mumble. A great groomsman speech becomes boring if it’s monotonous or if the guests are struggling to understand you. Speak confidently and slowly.

How to write a best man speech

Writer’s block is no excuse for putting off the best man’s speech. All you have to do is follow our best man speech guide, which is a tried-and-true template to get you started. Obviously, you don’t have to include every element in your speech; Instead, tailor it to the couple, the event, and your relationship with the groom.

Best Man Speech Outline

We’re guessing the thought of creating a flawless groomsman toast from scratch is feeling pretty overwhelming right now. Start by drafting a rough outline (trust us, creating a rough outline is a lot tastier than the thought of writing a full-blown speech). Here’s a great best man speech template to follow:

Have a killer opening line.

Thank the other speakers.

Congratulate the newlyweds.

Say a few kind words about your friend’s new spouse.

Make a joke about the groom.

Read messages from guests who didn’t make it, if any.

Quote a few famous lines or a poem.

Make a toast.

Speech ideas for the best man

To find the best groomsman speech, focus on the groom’s personality and the times they shared. Go through old photos, share memories with family and mutual friends, or even ask the couple for ideas for the best man’s speech (if you don’t want your speech to be a surprise). Consider these questions as you write your speech: Will the groom mind if you poke fun at them a little, or are they more serious or sensitive? Is there a heartwarming story you can tell that others might not know about? Which people will attend the wedding and what kind of humor will they enjoy?

introductions

Begin your speech by addressing the audience and thanking them for attending the wedding. Here’s an example: “Hello everyone. On behalf of the newlyweds I would like to thank everyone for being a part of their amazing celebration.” You can even smear the crowd by saying how pretty everyone looks tonight.

Once you’ve addressed the audience, give the previous speaker props to introduce into your speech. If you know your speech has a sillier vibe, now’s your chance to warn your audience about the change in direction. Here’s an example: “Let’s leave it to the amazing maid of honor’s amazing speech. If you liked how thoughtful and sweet her speech was, you better get your tissues ready for this one!”

Next, express your gratitude to the couple’s parents. Thank you to the couple’s parents for not only raising incredible adults and, when helping pay for the wedding, throwing such an amazing party. Here is an example: “First of all I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the parents of the couple for raising such amazing people who I am fortunate to call my best friends such a great celebration for all of us to enjoy tonight.” ”

Finally, introduce yourself and how you know the groom or the couple. This is a great opportunity to slip in a fun story or memory you have with them that can guide you into the rest of your speech.

jokes and one-liners

If you want to give a funny groomsman speech, consider taunting the groom. “Every groom is going to have some funny trait or quirk that can be ridiculed,” says Bliss. “As long as it’s something everyone can appreciate, it’s sure to get a laugh. Avoid obscure innuendos or inside jokes. They want older guests and those who don’t know him that well to see his funny side too.” Be strategic about your jokes, too. Joke about the groom, but leave your new spouse alone.

Bliss advises that you “start with a killer opening line” so you can grab everyone’s attention and set the mood. A good one-liner is short but sincere. It should be a short, humorous phrase that can get guests laughing for a while – this will give you time to shake off any nervousness about public speaking.

Conclusions

Concluding your best man speech is the easiest part. Just raise your glass and offer a toast wishing the couple a lifetime of happiness, excellent health and success. Your toast can include a final joke or a wedding quote of you and the groom’s favorite movie. Anyway, take this opportunity to sincerely express that you wish the newlyweds well.

Sample speeches for the best man

Here are a few examples of best man speeches that you can use as inspiration for your own speech:

Funny groomsman speech:

“Hi! For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Sam, the best man. I’ve known (the groom) since middle school, which means before we learned what a mullet was and what wasn’t a good look for both of us.

(Groom) and (Spouse) have told me that there are some topics I should avoid in this speech, so… [Look at the cue cards, then shake your head and dramatically open all but one of them fall to the ground.] [reading from the remaining cue card]…(groom) really is the best friend I’ve ever had. He has done so many wonderful things that it would be difficult to name them all… Hey Michael, I can’t read your handwriting here!

But seriously, it’s all true. This guy is a great friend – the best I have – and I am very proud to stand by his side today.

(Spouse), I was hoping to be the best looking person in the room today, but obviously I failed miserably. You look beautiful. I’m so happy for you both.

May you always find joy in the little things, like Xbox and Star Wars, oh wait no, that was (best man) and I in middle school. Find joy in each other and have a life of happiness together. Let’s toast the newlyweds!”

Short and sweet best man speech:

“As the poet Dante once said, ‘A little spark is followed by a great flame.’ When (groom) met (spouse) there was a little spark, I know because I spoke to him the next day.

From the way he talked about (spouse), this girl/boy he spoke to at a party, I could tell that spark was something special.

You two are amazing together. Long may the flame burn – and may sparks continue to fly.

To the newlyweds. Cheers!”

Best man speech for brother:

“On my fourth birthday, my parents gave me a brother…I wanted a puppy.

But seriously, as a kid (groom) I wanted to do whatever I did. He always followed me. He used to sneak into my room and play with my Matchbox cars. Our parents were able to get him to eat his broccoli by making me eat my broccoli.

It wasn’t until I went to college that he went his own way. He started volunteering. He’s found a job he loves, an apartment that’s pretty killer, and of course he’s found (spouse).

(spouse) you are beaming today and making my brother so happy. Thanks a lot for this. He’s a good guy. For me he is the best person you can have by your side.

I’m so happy you two found each other. I mean it when I say I’m getting a sister today.

And I’m glad I didn’t have a puppy. i love you little brother

Happy birthday to you both. I wish you a life full of love and happiness together. Let’s toast the newlyweds!”

Did Jordan and Harper sleep together?

One night in college, Jordan and Harper had nearly slept together, so both she and he now wonder if they can make a go of it while Harper’s in New York City, even though Harper has a girlfriend named Robin in Chicago. During the bachelor party Saturday night, Lance finds out what happened between Mia and Harper.

The Best Man Holiday

In THE BEST MAN, a young black writer nearly fails at his best friend’s upcoming Christian wedding. Although this film has a positive, pro-Christian ending that quotes biblical truths, it also contains plenty of profanity, some sexual content, and pornographic half-nude dancing at a wild bachelor party.

Romantic worldview about human nature with ultimately moral and Christian elements about romance, marriage and divine love, plus some strong pagan sexuality and lifestyle choices that at times become anti-Christian or undermine the Christian witness in the film; 121 mostly strong profanity, 5 strong profanity, 13 mild profanity like “My God”, several racial epithets and rough talk about sex; angry groom lunges at man, beats best man and almost throws him off roof; brief but covert fornication, implied fornication, couples begin to love but are interrupted, lap dancing and half-naked dancers perform erotic dances and other lewd acts; upper male nudity, women in skimpy nightgowns or underwear and rear female nudity; alcohol use and intoxication; Smoking; and visual and verbal references to prostitution, writer airs dirty laundry in public via novel, man decides to cheat on girlfriend, Christian man gets angry twice and gossips.

THE BEST MAN is an adult romantic comedy reminiscent of THE BIG CHILL starring William Hurt. Instead of a funeral reuniting old friends, a wedding reunites young black writer Harper Stewart with his college buddies.

Taye Diggs of HOW STELLA GOT HER GROOVE BACK plays Harper, who is the best man at his friend Lance Sullivan’s wedding. Lance is now a Superstar Athlete for the National Football League. To his chagrin, Harper learns that his friends are passing around an advanced edition of his book UNFINISHED BUSINESS, a thinly disguised, bombastic reminder of their college days. Harper is terrified Lance will find out he had a one night stand with Lance’s fiancé-to-be Mia when she found out Lance was cheating on her with all the college floozies that lavished attention on Lance when he was a star athlete in college was.

One of the turning points of this story is that Lance was, and still is, a committed Christian trying to get his agnostic friend Harper to accept God. Fortunately, Lance recognizes the hypocrisy in his former lifestyle. In a flashback to their college years, Lance asks Harper to read the Bible and pray with him so Lance can mend his broken relationship with God. Another twist is that Harper is dying to sleep with his girlfriend Jordan, one of the bridesmaids. As a highly motivated professional like Harper, Jordan works for Black Entertainment Television. Jordan and Harper almost slept together one night in college, so now she and he are wondering if they could try while Harper’s is in New York City, even though Harper has a girlfriend named Robin in Chicago.

During Saturday night’s bachelorette party, Lance finds out what happened between Mia and Harper. After throwing Harper across the room and almost off the balcony, he calls off the wedding. This interrupts Jordan and Harper’s planned tryst. Harper must now decide how to get the wedding going again. He also has to decide whether to choose Jordan or Robin, who flies to New York on Sunday.

THE BEST MAN is a slick, entertaining romp that, despite plenty of strong profanity and sexual immorality, comes to a satisfying ending that extols the virtues of religious commitment and marriage. The positive ending almost saves the rest of the film. For example, one figure quotes Paul’s definition of love in 1 Corinthians 13, and another figure says that there is nothing greater than love “because God is love.” Another line of dialogue at the end is the glorious exhortation to “love one another as God loves us.” Although Harper and the filmmakers sometimes obnoxiously mock Lance’s Christian beliefs in the earlier part of the film, the story’s resolution confirms those beliefs. In fact, Harper urges Lance to pray to God about the wedding before telling Mia he wants to call it off. Even Harper’s sexually promiscuous and cynical friend Quentin sheds a tear when the vows are exchanged. Her other boyfriend, the serious Murch, seems to reform one of the half-naked dancers, Candy, when he invites her to the wedding.

Before the positive ending, however, there is the bachelorette party, where the strong sexual nature of the half-naked dancing involves many close-ups of almost full rear female nudity. Apparently, the filmmakers believe there is a market for such vulgar sexuality, especially when done to a melodic beat, but that kind of attitude has caused too much heartache and uproar in society. The half-naked dancing adds immensely to the strength of the film’s sexuality and nudity ratings. THE BEST MAN also has plenty of swear words, including many uses of the “f” word and five strong profanities. If the film’s noted producer, Spike Lee (DO THE RIGHT THING), had as much real intelligence or social sensitivity as he claims, he would not have allowed such dangerous, sordid material to see the light of day.

None of this detracts from the talent of the cast, however. The main cast and their supporting colleagues do an excellent job. Terrence Howard almost steals the show as Quentin, but Taye Diggs pulls off a nice lead, especially when he’s fighting Morris Chestnut as Lance. Helping deliver the goods among the women are Nia Long as Jordan, Sanaa Lathan as Robin and, most notably, Monica Calhoun as Mia. Calhoun’s no-nonsense honesty shines through her warm eyes. Lathan plays a pivotal role in the film’s happy, uplifting ending. Without a strong performance from her at this point, the film would have been less entertaining.

Due to its strong pro-Christian ending, THE BEST MAN does not deserve a spot in MOVIEGUIDE’s Hollywood Babylon section. However, its profusely lewd language, sexual innuendos and pornographic semi-naked dancing clearly earn THE BEST MAN a big red flag of extreme caution, even for adults.

Who cheated in best man?

9. Morris Chestnut—the pro-football-playing, serial-cheating groom-to-be Lance, who almost can’t handle finding out that his bride-to-be Mia (Monica Calhoun) cheated on him once—admitted to Essence.com in 2009 that he still didn’t know what he’d do if he had been in Lance’s shoes.

The Best Man Holiday

It’s been 20 years since Mia and Lance said their I-Do.

And while her journey down the aisle in 1999’s groundbreaking romantic dramedy The Best Man was a back and forth, there was little doubt that no matter how the chips fell, the ending would be satisfying.

Why? For the journey had been so damn pleasant!

It’s just nine years from an article in the New York Times that said “In Hollywood is Black In” following the release of Do the Right Thing, the adult story of friends who started with a You Can’t Go Home Again Getting Together for a Wedding Twist and lots of laughter was a box office hit that also reminded studios that there was a severely underserved market for more everyday stories told by Black filmmakers and starring Black actors.

It wasn’t ahead of its time – in fact, it was both long overdue and following in some sacred footsteps, but The Best Man launched careers and led to greater representation in multiplexes.

It’s what you want, boy

It’s what you need baby

Of what you really want

That’s a secret

cooped up for years

Exclusive guy

For eyes and ears only

You held onto it for so long

You burst into tears

The letters slowly spill over

the site like a world premiere

All right, the nonsense

The obvious cause

the effects are unclear

The punishment for crimes of

the heart could be heavy

Although to keep it on the rock bottom

is a heavy cross to bear

You deep now, submerged

With no sign of air

Still your sunken heart thumpin’

like stepping into the noose

When on the surface

It all turns into a circus

That’s why you’re nervous

And you have a right to it

It’s what you want, boy

It’s what you need baby

The Best Man Script

Year: 1999 Director: Malcolm D. Lee Written by: Malcolm D. Lee (Author)

Script Summary: Harper, a writer about to explode into the mainstream, leaves his girlfriend Robin behind and makes his way to New York City to serve as best man at his friend Lance’s wedding. There he reunites with the rest of his college circle.

The Best Man Holiday

Rated R for Speech, Sexual Content, and Brief Nudity.

Running time: 2 hours and 3 minutes.

Yes, this is a film set in the week of Christmas and centered around a character who is very religious, but writer-director Malcolm D. Lee gets a bit too heavy-handed with his infusion and use of divine influence. Lee may have an overly bloated runtime. There are certain things here that weren’t necessary and I didn’t see the point of, especially at the end when Lee tries to cram a lot of events into that final act. Maybe it was a tempo problem or Lee was just trying to juggle too many things. This sequel attempts to juggle 10 characters. All but one of the characters are from the previous film, so I understand why Lee includes them. But honestly, three characters could have been eliminated, and it wouldn’t have hurt or detracted from the main story. This story focuses on the friendship between Harper Stewart, played by Taye Diggs, and Lance Sullivan, played by Morris Chestnut. Lance and his wife invite Harper and his wife and a few other friends over to their New York mansion for the Christmas holidays. Since the film is set in real-time from the last film (1999), it’s strange to see that Harper and Lance are still dealing with the subject from that film almost 15 years ago. It’s understood the two haven’t actually spent much time together since then. The invitation to Christmas seems to come out of nowhere. There’s a reason, but even when Harper arrives, the problem is still being felt. Harper is concerned and Lance is angry and/or bitter. The problem is that in the previous film, Lance found out in advance of his wedding that his “best man,” Harper, was having an affair with his then-wife-to-be, Mia, played by Monica Calhoun. Harper actually took Mia’s virginity. Not only did he do that, but Harper is a writer and has written about the affair and his friendship with Lance in a book. When Lance found out, he exploded. The two got over it back then, or at least that’s what was assumed. This movie is proof that Harper and Lance couldn’t get over it. You can be in the same room together. They can talk and laugh, but obviously there’s still a lot of tension between them. The added tension comes from the fact that Harper hasn’t published a book in years and is running out of money because his wife Robyn, played by Sanaa Lathan, is undergoing expensive fertility treatment. She is now eight months pregnant, and his agent tells Harper the only way he can support his wife and upcoming baby is to write a bio about his friend Lance, who is at the time hugely popular and wealthy football player for the New York Giants. But given what happened to Harper’s last book, Harper knows it won’t be easy to convince Lance to let him do it. During the holiday celebrations, Harper secretly tries to gather information about Lance’s life and career for his book. Things get complicated when Harper’s boyfriend, for whom he had some romantic feelings, Jordan, played by Nia Long, shows up with her boyfriend Brian, played by Eddie Cibrian. Brian stands out as the only white guy in a mostly African-American cast, despite loving Jordan. It doesn’t examine what Jordan does for a living or how deep her relationship with Harper is. Knowledge of the first film is required for full understanding. Diggs and Long do a good job of conveying that depth through their performances, but knowledge of the first film is still required. The same applies when, in an emotional moment, the song “As” by Stevie Wonder is performed by Anthony Hamilton and Marsha Ambrosius. If you haven’t seen the first movie, you’ll miss the meaning of this song. Lee gives a little visual synopsis of the first film above, but that’s not enough. It sets the stage, but it’s still not enough. Therefore, including certain characters in the film is tantamount to fanservice. This refers to the characters of Julian and Candace, played by Harold Perrineau and Regina Hall, respectively. I like both actors but their characters don’t add anything to the main story. They add humor, but the real comic relief, of course, is Quentin or Q, played by Oscar nominee Terrence Howard. He’s refreshing because he’s the only character who’s completely honest and says whatever’s on his mind, often without filters or inhibitions. His female counterpart is Shelby, played by Melissa De Sousa. Both of them are about sex and celebrity, or at least sex and social media. But as Act III rolls onto the screen, Lee rushes through a host of events designed to recreate the fate of Harper and Lance’s friendship. Still, things get muddled. A soccer game on Christmas Day is particularly messed up. I really didn’t get the point from the filmmaker’s point of view or why everyone was pushing Lance to do it from the characters’ perspective. During the football game, Lee makes Chestnut take a Tim Tebow after a touchdown. He then has the camera on a jib or crane and raises it above Chestnut’s head while raising his hands in the air and thanking God. Later, Diggs’ character challenges Harper to his faith and belief in God, but that’s not enough to offset Lance’s awe. The implication that God facilitated the touchdown and that it was divinely delivered is ridiculous. I’d say this movie is better than all of the Tyler Perry movies combined, even though it works on a pretty parallel level. For example, this film isn’t all that dissimilar to Tyler Perry’s (2007). Writing and characterizing is so much less preachy. It’s not perfect, but less preaches. Four stars out of five.
