EXETER, N.H. – A game popular with high school seniors worries police departments.

Exeter, N.H. police urged students to stop playing the game “Assassins” on Tuesday, citing a potential threat to the safety of students and others in the community.

“A major concern is that participants in the game could present themselves as suspicious or armed persons, or cause suspicious activity to third parties which may trigger a civil self-defense response and/or a police response,” Exeter Police said.

Typically played towards the end of the school year by high school seniors, the game involves teams of students tracking down and shooting at each other with water guns. Players sometimes wear black or camouflage clothing and find hiding spots near bushes or behind shops when “hunting” their targets, police said.

A student playing the game sparked confusion in Braintree, Massachusetts last week as police searched for a suspect fleeing a traffic stop in nearby Brockton.

Braintree Police said a report of a person hiding behind a shed was met with a strong police response.

“It was determined that the person hiding behind the shed was playing a high-level assassin,” police said.

Police said the water guns may resemble real guns. They urge families to discuss the possible consequences of the game with their children.

“Our collective fear is that something tragic could result,” Braintree Police said.
