Even better, they can be moved around like any other piece of furniture at any time without damaging your walls. Although it sounds easy to work with, there are still a few tricks to decorating with crooked mirrors.

Below are 5 considerations you need to make

1. Lean your mirrors against tables, bookshelves, or mantels. This has the benefit of breathing life into that boring, unused space above your furniture.

2. Mirrors reflect more than just you. Lean it in a place where it can also reflect something attractive and add dimension to a lifeless space. This includes furniture, accents, art, and even a window with a great view of the outside.

Place the mirror on the rubber grip surface to prevent slipping

One thing that startled me was the mirror sliding out on the hardwood floor. To prevent this we used a rubber drawer liner under the mirror.

I’ve seen gripping pads made specifically for furniture, so that’s a good option too.

Regardless, I think it’s a good idea to keep the mirror from slipping in case it gets a slight bump while passing by.

After we had pinpointed exactly where the mirror would go, I cut a strip of drawer liner (which felt like a rubber handle) to fit under both sides of the mirror.

Jason, my husband, held up each edge of the mirror while I attached the rubber strips.

Attach furniture straps to mirror and wall

We used QuakeHOLD! Furniture straps to secure our mirror.

The process was pretty easy. We followed the directions in the box and they worked like a charm.

The kit comes with two heavy-duty nylon straps that you attach to the back of your mirror (or other heavy furniture). This glue is very sticky so I think you can rest assured it’s safe!

One end of the strap attaches to the back of the mirror, the other end screws into a wall stud.

Unfortunately we could not reach a wall post. But using heavy duty drywall anchors did the trick.

If you don’t feel comfortable using just the glue, screws are provided to attach the straps to the back of the mirror (or furniture).

You follow the same process on the left and right side of the mirror.

It really is!

Our hallway is dark so I thought about using chalk paint to brighten up the frame of this large mirror! I did exactly that with a mirror in our basement and it turned out really pretty.

How to hang a heavy mirror

Prepare for success with the right tools and accurate measurements. Then gather the important details needed to choose the best installation hardware for hanging a mirror.

Step 1: Determine mirror weight and mounting hardware

Look up a mirror’s weight in the product specifications, or simply weigh the mirror on a bathroom scale. Mounting hardware is included with most new purchases. Look for D-rings, wires, clips, or cleats (also called French cleats) attached to the back or included in the box. If your mirror does not have mounting hardware, you will need to install them first.

Step 2: Know Your Wall Type

Homes that are newly built or recently renovated typically have drywall, while many older homes have plasterboard. If you’re not sure which type you have, try pushing a thumbtack into the wall. You can easily stick the thumbtack into drywall, but not into plaster. masonry, such as B. Brick is another wall type you may encounter that will affect how you hang a mirror.

Step 3: Identify studs and potential obstacles

Leveling tips for different types of hardware

Brackets: This type of mounting hardware is the easiest to make. Measure from the top of the mirror to the bracket and the length of the bracket. Transfer these measurements to the wall. When you’re ready to install, start with the middle screw so you have something in place, then align before inserting the remaining screws.

D-rings or keyholes: Measure from the top of the mirror to the top of the D-ring or keyhole. Then measure the distance between the two attachment points. When transferring these measurements to the wall, pay particular attention to the leveling of the two attachment points.

Wire: Measuring for wire is a bit trickier as you have to determine the attachment points yourself. We propose two points so that the weight is better distributed. With the mirror leaning against the wall or face down, lift the wire to make it taut and identify two points that distribute the pressure evenly across the wire. You don’t want them too close together; For a large mirror, start at about 12 inches (a standard ruler length) and adjust from there. Once you find the two points, measure the distance between them and the distance between the stretched wire and the top of the mirror. When transferring these measurements to the wall, be sure to level the two mounting points.

Hanging a heavy mirror on different types of walls

Although it’s preferable to hang a heavy object on a stand in the wall, stands aren’t always exactly where you want them. Instead, use wall anchors to mount a heavy mirror. The weight of the mirror and the type of wall it is hanging on are the deciding factors in choosing the right wall anchor. It is best to choose a fastener that can support more than the required weight. Most fastener packaging tells you how much weight the product can hold, what type of wall it should be used on, and how to install it (including drill bit size, if needed).

D-rings, keyholes, and wire-mounted mirrors can all be hung from an anchored screw. Just remember to stick out a quarter or half inch. The brackets, on the other hand, must be in place before screws can be installed.

How to hang a heavy mirror on drywall

When screwing into a stud, you only need a 1¼” screw or 1⅝” screw for secure mounting through ½” drywall. If you’re hanging a heavy mirror on drywall without a support, you’ll need drywall anchors that can support the weight of your mirror. Check out sleeve expansion anchors for lighter weights. Drill a pilot hole to install, then insert the anchor and tap or screw, flush to the wall. When you drive the screw into the anchor with either a screwdriver or a drill, the anchor will spread and wedge firmly into the wall. Self-drilling drywall anchors work similarly, but can handle heavier weights and do not require a pilot hole or drill for installation.

Mollybolts and Togglebolts are cavity wall anchors that also work in drywall. Toggles are recommended for the heaviest items on both drywall and plaster.

How to hang a heavy mirror on plaster

If you’re screwing into a stud, you probably only need a 3″ screw. This will allow the screw to go through 1 inch of plaster wall and 2 inches deep into the stud. If you are hanging a heavy mirror on plaster without bolts, your best choice is a hollow wall anchor, such as B. a toggle bolt that expands and secures behind the plaster wall. In addition to selecting the correct weight capacity, the length of the cavity wall anchor is important as the bolt needs to extend past the wall so it can expand behind it.

Molly Bolts are medium duty hollow wall anchors. To use, drill a pilot hole and then tap the entire screw – sleeve and screw – into the hole until it is flush with the wall. Tighten the screw in the wall to spread the anchor. Once you’ve fully tightened the screw, you can back it out a bit to make room to hang the mirror. A metal toggle bolt is the strongest wall anchor available. Start by drilling a pilot hole, then screw the toggle onto the stud so the wings open toward the wall (not away from it). Slide the toggle (wings folded down) through the pilot hole. The wings open once inside. Pull the bolt towards you to secure the wings to the wall. Screw in the screw and tighten the wings.

How to hang a heavy mirror on brick and other surfaces

As with plaster and drywall, brick requires a wall anchor when installing a heavy mirror. Check out plastic sleeve anchors that work well for masonry, or a wall sleeve anchor for really heavy decoration. How to hang a frameless mirror

Many frameless mirrors rely on mirror clips attached to the top and bottom of the mirror (and sometimes the sides).
