Method 2: Pump air into the water tank using the Schrader valve

Here we explain how to use a simple hand pump (or an air filled cylinder) to bring the air charge back into a water tank.

The procedure outlined below works to add air to either type of water tank: a bubble type tank with trapped air (photo below) or a bubbleless steel water pressure tank. Our photo on the left shows an air inlet valve located on the tee at the bottom of the water tank.

This method of adding air to the water tank is for water tanks that do not use an internal bladder.

If your water pressure gauge isn’t changing steadily as water (or air) enters or leaves the water tank, try tapping the gauge lightly. If it still doesn’t work,

6. Turn on the power to the fountain pump again.

If the pressure in the water tank is below the cut-in pressure of the pump, the pump starts running immediately. If the pressure in the water tank is above the cut-in pressure, nothing will happen until you drain some water (and pressure) from the water pressure tank.

7. Turn on a nearby, convenient plumbing fixture (such as a kitchen sink or washbasin).

If you closed the main water valve between the water tank and the building in step 2, open that valve before attempting to run water.

Let the water run in the house until the fountain pump starts. Turn off the water at the faucet again and let the pump run until it reaches its cut-off point. At this point, both your water tank and building plumbing will be at cut-off pressure.

Turn the water on again at a suitable point and let it run. Notice how long the water runs or how much water runs before the pump turns on again. We’re looking for a 20-30 second setback time before the fountain pump turns back on when a typical kitchen faucet is running.

7. Evaluate the results. Add more air if needed.

If the drawdown cycle (time before the pump turns on again) is still too small (just a gallon or two is not enough) or timed (just a few seconds is certainly not enough time), then you should give the system more supply air.

8. What if you add too much air?

As long as you haven’t pressurized the water tank to unusually high (dangerous) levels, if the water tank is overfilled with air, excess air will usually leak out of the tank through the home water supply lines and fittings when it’s next run.

Repairing a Leaking Water Tank Air Inlet Valve: Tips for Water Tanks with Leaking Air Inlet Valves

If you tampered with this valve when there was no pressure on the water tank (perhaps you pushed the little pin at the top of the valve), water or air may leak out of the Schrader valve when you try to turn it back down to put pressure on the tank.

Usually you can stop this water or air leak by simply pushing down on the small valve stem pin and releasing it a few times. This measure can successfully remove deposits that may have been on the valve seat.

The special tool, sometimes simply a special valve stem cap, has a protruding tip with a slot in it that is used to unscrew and remove the old valve (located at the bottom of the valve stem itself and ending with the little pin you see if you look up into the valve stem) and screw in a new valve stem insert.

The replaced internal water tank air valve stem part (valve stem core) can be purchased with different spring rates for different pressure ranges, but given that the pressure range of a typical water tank is 20-70psi (like a car tire) almost any standard tire valve stem core would work well as a replacement, if your valve stem won’t stop leaking.

Mike, an air valve stem is interchangeable, I would try that first.

Also check for abnormal system pressure (an unsafe condition). But if the tank’s internal bladder has burst – another explanation for finding water on the air pressure adjustment valve – then you most likely need to replace the tank. You know this condition because the tank gets soaked and heavy and eventually the boiler TP valve drips (another unsafe condition).

Can I use any CO2 for beer?

Food grade CO2 can be used to dispense beer, keeping it from going bad as fast as it does with hand pumps (Atmospheric Air). So some of your keg-beer shops will have it. All Pop Distributors will have it too since its required for both BiB and premix systems, but they tend to cost more for the same CO2.

Meat is actually packed with CO2 as well as various gas mixtures. Some inhibit bacterial growth, while others slow oxidation and the loss of the bright red color. Nitrogen is commonly used with CO2 to achieve this in “counter ready” beef packaging. Pork sausage is protected with a mixture of 20% CO2/80% N2. Gas companies sell product lines specifically for meat, and the segment is often referred to as Modified Atmosphere Packaging or something similar. CO has applications in this area, but the dominant gases used to protect meat products are CO2 and N2.

Also, CO2 comes from the same bulk tank and through the same lines into the gas packaging facility. Bottles are commonly exchanged for service, whether industrial or beverage. They are usually kept in continuous operation by convention as this facilitates crop production, but this is not required.

Quality control is done in two ways. The first is the selection of the final source gas. For example, if you want to use CO2 for drinks, the gas comes from an ethanol plant. The CO2 plant is located on-site where ethanol is produced and passes through the raw product, which is essentially a by-product of ethanol production. The CO2 is refined to a desired level and includes the removal of moisture and the expected known impurities from the ethanol plant. It is then liquefied for easier storage and transportation. As the CO2 is generated, the production stream is continuously sampled to meet specifications. The CO2 plants produce products to meet the demand of the largest customers, therefore any plant that produces CO2 for beverage applications and supplies, for example, to Coke, produces products that meet this specification. So it certainly fulfills what you need it for as well. The truck transporting the product will likely be owned, but this is not required. A similar situation exists for medical O2, USP quality. The facility makes it, ships it in any old O2 truck (they’re all super clean anyway) and puts it in the same tank that we fill with weld and cut grade industrial oxygen. (It has always interested me that medical grade oxygen, USP, has a lower minimum purity requirement than industrial oxygen. There are strict controls over the USP filling process that protects patients using the gas, but the specification is in the Usually the lowest percent cleanliness. ) Plant piping is selected for pressure and cleanliness and may be brass of a particular type, stainless tubing or even monel. (Acetylene plants use black iron pipes.)

CO2 is sourced from other plants, some of which may contain ammonia as a trace contaminant, as well as other bad actors. As expected, beverage product does not come from there.

So the first control is exercised when we choose the source of the gas. The next check comes from conventional gas quality instruments such as the use of gas chromatography, IR spectroscopy, flame ionization hydrocarbon analysis and trace O2 analysis. So, a company’s offer may name a variety with similar nomenclature, but the specifications will be different.

The quality is controlled by selecting the sources and then doing the analysis. If you want to know what you’re getting, ask for a data sheet for the gas, which states the minimum guaranteed purity for any CO2 sold under whatever grade by the gas company. This is a catalog specification only. If it’s from a gas company like Praxair, Air Liquide or Linde, this information is easy to find on their websites. If you source a product from a retailer, the good guys will easily offer that too. If they can’t get a better source, then who can. NuCO2 is a national beverage gas supplier that was bought by Praxair some time ago and specializes in Bev Carb. In general, it’s best to tell your gas supplier what you’re going to be used for and ask what type you should be using and why. A good example is Praxair’s Wersite and Beverage Carbonation.
