Why can’t I mirror with Smart View on Android 11 or later?

Samsung recently removed the ability to use Smart View with non-Samsung branded devices, e.g. B. a Samsung Smart TV or speakers. This means that many Samsung users with Android 11 or later cannot mirror with Reflector.

We found a workaround that has proven successful for most users. This involves re-enabling the Google Cast feature on your Samsung device and using Cast instead of Smart View to mirror to Reflector. Follow the steps below to implement the workaround.

Step 1

Download the free Quick Settings app from the Google Play Store and install it on your Samsung device.

Launch the Quick Settings app and select Multimedia.

Tap Cast and select Enable tile. When a window appears describing the Quick Settings pane, tap OK.

Quit the Quick Settings app and open the Quick Settings taskbar expanded view: Swipe down twice from the top of your device screen.

Note: Please make sure the tray is pulled all the way down and you can see more than one set of icons.

Tap the three dots icon to see more options.

Choose Button Order.

The cast icon will now appear as an available option. Tap the Cast icon and drag it to the taskbar.

The cast icon now remains in the quick settings bar. Tap on it to open the cast menu. Select the name of your Reflector-enabled device when it appears in this menu. Your Samsung device will now connect to Reflector via a cast connection.

There are other streaming sticks on the market, such as Flipkart’s MarQ, Airtel’s Xstream, although the Google and Amazon sticks are the most popular.

Apps like Netflix, YouTube, Disney+Hotstar, Amazon Prime Video all support Google’s Cast feature, which allows you to play the content straight from your phone and mirror it to the TV.

There is a screen mirroring option on the Amazon Fire TV Stick to display your smartphone screen on the TV. It is available in settings. Enabling this will mirror your smartphone’s screen on the TV and allow you to access other apps on the big screen. One thing you need to make sure, however, is that the Chromecast or Fire TV Stick and phone have the same WiFi connection so the content can be streamed from your phone to your TV.

These streaming dongles are a useful gadget if you don’t have a smart TV and just want to cast content from your phone to your TV without too much hassle. They also support screen mirroring, where the entire smartphone screen is displayed on the TV. And they work flawlessly with an older TV, giving you the joys of a Smart TV.

Wireless Casting: Using the TV’s built-in features

As mentioned earlier, most of the new Android TVs or Smart TVs that have come out recently already support Google’s Cast feature. So in this case, you don’t need a dongle to connect your Android phone to the TV. Just press the cast option on your smartphone and it should connect to the TV wirelessly. Make sure both are on the same WiFi network.

Smart View is an easy way to mirror content from your Samsung phone or tablet to a larger display.

Most new Samsung mobile devices have Smart View built in. You can also download the Smart View app if it is not a native feature on your device.

Sounds great right? But there’s a catch: Smart View only sends content to certain compatible receivers, like Chromecast, Fire Stick, or Samsung’s own smart TV. How to mirror your Samsung phone or tablet to your computer with Smart View:

Step 1

Download and install Reflector on your Mac or Windows computer. Open reflector. Make sure your Android device and computer are connected to the same WiFi network.

On your Android device, swipe down twice from the top of the screen to reveal the quick settings bar. If Smart View isn’t on this page, you may need to search for it or swipe to the second page of tiles on the taskbar.

Android 11 with basic OneUI 3.1 Core

The Galaxy A03s comes standard with the core version of One UI 3.1 and Android 11. There aren’t too many massive differences between One UI 3.1 and One UI 3.1 Core, but we’ll go through them just in case as few of our readers probably know them by heart.

The core version of One UI trims some apps and services to free up system resources and disk space on the launcher. What didn’t make the cut – the Samsung Pay service (GPay is available), KNOX features and Secure Folder, Easy Mode, Bixby Assistant, Windows Link service and the Good Lock app for advanced customization. Samsung’s Game Launcher, Music Share and Smart View are also unavailable. However, we suspect few people will miss these on such a basic phone.

The Galaxy A03s does not support always-on display. The default lock screen has two shortcuts – dialer and camera, but you can choose different apps. The lock screen has a wellness widget – you can now track how much time you’ve spent on your phone without even unlocking it.

Unlocking the screen with the side-mounted fingerprint scanner is a breezy experience – the reader is always on and offers excellent accuracy and speed.

Another notable change is that dragging the notification shade covers the entire screen below, even if there is only one notification card or no notifications at all. Previously, part of the screen below the last notification was still visible, just dimmed.

Android 11 includes the nifty notification history feature. It’s accessed via the settings menu, so it’s not within immediate reach, but it’s there for those times when you’ve dismissed a notification too quickly and can’t seem to find what it was about. Just make sure you enable it as it is disabled by default.

All default layout tweaks and toggles for the quick panel and taskbar are honored. Android 11 has a new method of handling notifications for instant messenger apps called Bubbles, and One UI 3 adopts it as well. This is in addition to a previously available similar feature offered by Samsung called Smart Popup View. You’ll find these settings in the “Floating Notifications” submenu, where you can alternatively turn off both and opt for the old-school card-only interface.

Android 11’s slick multimedia controls have found their way into One UI. You get the active audio playback apps in a stack just below the quick toggles, and swiping sideways switches between apps.

The media screen was already available on One UI 2.5 before Android 11 and offers similar functions for selecting the output device. The volume control has also been revamped, and now the four sliders are vertical instead of the horizontal ones of One UIs in the past.

The settings menu has received a subtle but meaningful overhaul. Subcategories are made more readable through the use of a period separator and additional intervals, while recent searches are now shown as bubbles instead of a list. Additionally, there’s a newly added feature for searching settings by hashtags – for conceptually related things found in various places in the menu.

The One UI dialer app lends itself to numerous customizations. There are two different call screen layouts to choose from. You can also set a wallpaper or video for this screen, although it will be the same for all your calls – you cannot have a different one per person.

The Android experience with One UI is pretty simple and familiar. Samsung’s excellent theme support and rich online choices are also present. The same goes for the system navigation options, with some tweaks and layouts for gestures, as well as old-fashioned button controls, even in the really old original style, with the back button on the right.

The Galaxy A03s also offers many additional additional features, such as the edge panels user interface. However, Android Auto support is built right into the Galaxy A03s.

The Galaxy A03s comes with Samsung’s own gallery, internet browser and notes app. Microsoft’s Office, OneDrive and Outlook apps, as well as all major Google apps and services, are pre-installed.

Overall, as we said, there are a few omissions here and there as we move further down the Galaxy A lineup. However, in our opinion, no cut is really big or that detrimental to the overall One UI experience. Fans of Samsung’s special Android experience should still feel in good hands here.

Performance and benchmarks

The Galaxy A03s runs on the entry-level Mediatek Helio P35 chipset. Its octa-core CPU only uses Cortex-A53 cores, four of which are clocked at up to 2.3GHz, the other four at 1.8GHz. It’s better than the Snapdragon 450 equipped smaller galaxies like the A02s/M02s which get a 1.8GHz cap for all 8 cores.

The GPU is the PowerVR GE8320 GPU, which is also found in other Helios – for example the G25 and G35 – and consequently in quite a few budget devices.

The Galaxy A03s is available in different RAM/storage configurations – 3GB/32GB, 4GB/32GB and 4GB/64GB. Our test device is of the most basic configuration – 3 GB RAM + 32 GB eMMC 5.1 storage.

As expected, the Helio P35 didn’t fare well on the benchmark results with only A53 cores – GeekBench took forever, and the only phone that’s worse than the A03s is the A02s due to the lower CPU clock.

The Galaxy A03s offers good performance stability when running benchmarks for long periods of time, as it doesn’t generate enough heat to force the chipset into throttling mode.

The performance itself is best described as acceptable for an entry-level phone, but to be honest, at this starting price of €160 we expected a bit more. The phone is slow across the board, and you can feel it everywhere – even when scrolling the UI.
