STEP 1: Plan your business

A clear plan is essential to success as an entrepreneur. It will help you grasp the ins and outs of your business and uncover some unknowns. Some important issues to consider are:

Luckily, we’ve done a lot of that research for you.

What are the costs of opening a drive-in cinema?

You’ll need around 10 to 14 acres of land ready to be built on, or you might find an abandoned drive-in that’s for sale. You can’t use old projection equipment as the industry has moved to a digital platform in the last decade. Expect investments of between $250,000 and $1 million to develop the property, including construction of a projection house, concession stand, sound system and playground.

How many hectares do I need to lease or buy? The typical drive-in theater requires between 10 and 14 acres of land. This should allow up to 500 cars to park at your theater. You also need to consider the space required to route cars off the street and through the box office. Some locations have zoning regulations to prevent traffic building up along the street or highway leading to the theater.

What kind of projector do I need? As most movie studios have started releasing movies exclusively in digital format, digital projectors have become essential for successful drive-in cinemas. This will be one of your major expenses as digital projectors typically cost between $75,000 and $150,000 per screen and require professional installation and calibration. Barco, Christie and NEC are the three most important manufacturers of cinema projectors today. Since not all old films are available in digital format, if you want to show classic films you might want to buy a 35mm projector as well. These are often used.

How much does a projector screen cost? A quality projection screen for your drive-in theater can cost anywhere from $50,000 to $250,000 depending on your region and specific local needs. Most screens are made of steel and anchored in concrete. In general, you need a professionally designed and installed screen to meet wind load requirements.

How do I get an FM station to play the audio? The most common way to handle audio in a drive-in theater is to use an FM radio station. To use this system, you must select an unused FM frequency and connect your FM transmitter to your projector’s audio output. This allows you to deliver movie audio to customers through their car stereos. You must also have a supply of portable radios that you can rent out to those who cannot get sound through their car stereos. You need a different radio frequency for each screen. To remain FCC compliant, you must purchase a Part 15 FM transmitter.

What are the running costs for a drive-in cinema?

Your paycheck is going to be a big expense. Film rentals are a manageable expense as you can opt for second edition films at a much lower price. They will place weekly orders for supplies. Lot maintenance also takes up a large portion of your expense table.

How much does it cost to license a new film? The cost of licensing a new film varies from film to film. The license fee is typically paid as a percentage of total ticket sales, with a minimum fee required. It’s typically around 50%, but new releases by big names often fall into the higher end during opening days or weeks, with the fee gradually decreasing over the course of the cinema.

How much does it cost to license a classic film? The cost of licensing a classic film also varies by film, but is generally lower than new releases. Second editions and classic films can be good options for drive-in theaters as they are often easier to come by than new releases. However, you must consider demand in your region and the profitability of older films, even given lower royalties.

How do I get the license to show films? Cinemas obtain licenses to show films through film distributors. As this process can be complex, it is best to hire a booking agent to assist you in the early days of running your theatre. Over time, you may choose to take on this responsibility yourself. As a small theater it can be difficult to book new releases. Because many studios have special requirements when it comes to letting their films to the cinemas. A new release is often only rented to a cinema that can play the film seven days a week. If your drive-in theater isn’t open every day or only has one screen, meeting these requirements can be difficult. If you are in close proximity to an indoor cinema, these cinemas usually get priority as they can show the films day and night.

Who is the target market?

Your preferred customers will be someone looking for an old-fashioned cinematic experience. Drive-in films reached their peak popularity in the 1950s and 1960s. Therefore, many of your customers will seek a sense of nostalgia for entertainment during these times. Matching the theme of your theater and decor to such a historical period can help satisfy the wants and needs of your customers.

How does a drive-in cinema make money?

You generate income by selling tickets to your films and by selling concession products. Most of your profit comes from food and drink sales, as film distributors handle a significant portion of ticket sales for new films.

How would I manage ticket sales? Your specific box office setup depends on your location. You can choose to sell from a single window or set up multiple entry lanes to handle more traffic. Some theaters even use carhops to sell tickets from window to window. Although many older cinemas maintain a cash-only system, many film distribution companies today require electronic sales to accurately track ticket sales and receipts.

Do I charge per vehicle or per person? Film studios charge an entrance fee per person for new films. However, you may consider holding per-car specials for classic film runs during slow times.

How much can you charge customers?

The average ticket price per person is about $10 each, with reduced prices for children and seniors. You may want to offer a car load price of $30-$40. Concession items sell for between $4 and $10. If they offer alcohol and a full menu, expect to pay $12-$20.

Can you do business with local restaurants to deliver to parked cars? While it is possible to make arrangements with local restaurants to cater to your moviegoers, it may not be cost effective. Because concessions account for such a large portion of your theatrical profits, it can be counterproductive to give such a large portion of those profits to outside companies.

How much profit can a drive-in cinema make?

You can only earn 10% of each ticket sold by showing new releases during the Blockbuster summer season. Concession items offer a 50-80% profit, but your operating expenses will eat up all those extra dollars. If you sell out all season, you could have a total win of $100,000 to $150,000.

How can you make your business more profitable?

The key to success is filling up your drive-thru every time you open the gates. Running obscure or old movies that don’t bring customers may be fun, but it’s not profitable. New trends for the film industry are centered on offering premium services to regular customers versus offering bargain tickets to increase profits for every truckload that buys admission.

To register for taxes, you must apply for an EIN. It’s really easy and free!

You can purchase your EIN for free through the IRS website, by fax, or by mail. If you want to learn more about EINs and their benefits for your LLC, read our article What is an EIN?.

STEP 4: Open a business bank account and credit card

Using dedicated commercial bank and credit accounts is essential to protecting personal wealth.

When your personal and business accounts are mixed, your personal assets (your home, car, and other valuables) are at risk if your business is sued. In commercial law, this is referred to as penetrating the corporate veil.

Additionally, by learning how to build business credit, you can get credit cards and other financing on your company’s behalf (instead of your own), better interest rates, higher lines of credit, and more.

Open a commercial bank account

In addition to the prerequisite for applying for business loans, opening a business bank account is:

Separates your personal wealth from your company’s assets, which is necessary for personal wealth protection.

Facilitates bookkeeping and tax returns.

Recommended: Read our Best Banks for Small Businesses report to find the best national bank or credit union.

Open 30 net accounts

Net 30 accounts are used to establish and build business credit and increase business cash flow. With a Net 30 account, companies buy goods and pay back the entire balance within 30 days.

NetMany Net 30 credit providers report to the major credit bureaus (Dun & Bradstreet, Experian Business and Equifax Business Credit). This is how companies build business credit so they can qualify for credit cards and other lines of credit.

Federal business license requirements

There are federal regulations about what can and cannot be added to food, sold as food, and processed with food. Attached is a Food and Drug Administration resource that describes the process of starting a food business: How to Start a Food Business

State and local business license requirements

Certain government permits and licenses may be required to operate a drive-in theater business. Learn more about licensing requirements in your state by visiting the SBA’s reference to state licenses and permits.

Most businesses are required to collect sales tax on the goods or services they provide. To learn more about how sales tax affects your business, read our small business sales tax article.

Information on local licenses and permits:

Check with the regulatory office in your town, city or district

Get support from one of the local associations listed in the US Small Business Association’s Directory of Local Business Resources.

Does this business violate sound regulations? Although FM radio transmission has significantly reduced the overall ambient noise of drive-in theaters, it can still create a lot of noise when large numbers of people are accommodated in their vehicles. Noise ordinances vary significantly from place to place, so you’ll need to check your specific location for applicable regulations. It is also important to remember that even if no restrictions are currently in place, you may be faced with new regulations in the future if your theater is generating disruptive noise levels. This is especially true if your theater is in close proximity to residential buildings.

How do I get a license with Pepsi or Cola to offer soda pop? In order to offer Pepsi or Cola products in your theater, you must enter into a distribution agreement with one of these companies. To begin the process, visit either Coke Solutions or Pepsico Partners to submit a request to serve their products. Someone from the company will contact you to work out a contract. You should consider contacting both companies to see which offers you a better deal.

Do I need licenses to serve food? Any business that serves food must have a catering license. The details of this requirement vary by state. Often the cost depends on your specific business and the number of people you want to serve. Check with your local business office for requirements in your state.

May I serve alcoholic beverages? Although alcohol sales in movie theaters are becoming increasingly popular, this issue is more complicated in drive-in theaters. Most drive-in theaters prohibit guests from bringing in alcohol and do not sell it. The theaters that offer alcohol at their concession stands usually require it to be consumed in the concession or bar area. If you wish to serve alcohol in your theater you will need a liquor license that allows you to serve alcohol outdoors.

How many bathrooms do I need? Restroom requirements vary by state, but most are based on the customer capacity you are carrying. For example, you may need to have one bathroom for every 40 guests. Be sure to check the specific requirements in your area, including those related to accessible toilets. There are also toilet requirements when it comes to employees. For example, OSHA requires businesses with 16 employees or fewer to have a restroom for their employees.

Can I only have one entry and exit or is that a fire hazard? Specific exit requirements depend on the local zoning laws in your state or municipality. Many require at least two exit points.

occupancy certificate

A drive-in store generally doesn’t have a large stock left. Businesses operating from a physical location typically require a Certificate of Occupancy (CO). A CO certifies that all building codes, zoning laws, and government regulations have been met.

If you want to rent a location:

The landlord is generally responsible for obtaining a CO.

Before leasing, confirm that your landlord has or can obtain a valid CO that applies to a drive-thru business.

After a major renovation, a new CO often needs to be issued. If your place of business is being renovated prior to opening, it is recommended that you include a note on your lease agreement that rent payments will not begin until a valid CO is issued.

If you are planning to buy or build a site:

You are responsible for obtaining a valid CO from a local government agency.

Check all building codes and zoning codes for your business location to ensure your drive-in theater business is compliant and able to receive a CO.

food regulations

When selling food you need a permit from a local health department. All companies that offer food must pass a health inspection. Tips for a good health check

STEP 7: Get business insurance

Just like with licenses and permits, your business needs insurance to operate safely and lawfully. Business liability insurance protects the financial well-being of your company in the event of damage.

There are different types of insurance policies created for different types of businesses with different risks. If you’re unsure of the types of risks your business might face, start with general liability insurance. This is the most common coverage small businesses need, so it’s a great place to start your business.

Find out more about general liability insurance.

Another notable insurance policy that many businesses require is workers’ compensation insurance. If your company will have employees, there’s a good chance your state will require you to have workers’ compensation insurance.

How to Promote and Market a Drive-In Theater

It’s a good idea to develop a weekly updated website that talks about the latest releases, offers trailers, lists menu options and maybe offers online ticket sales. You need to make sure your cinema is listed on major online ticketing outlets such as Fandango and Movietickets.com. Spread the word about the new location by attending local festivals, fairs and conventions. You may also wish to sponsor local arts and food festivals.

How to get customers to come back

With so many options for watching movies, you need to offer a unique experience. Some drive-ins now offer beer, wine and even fine dining. The latest projections and sounds often attract enthusiastic moviegoers. Families will appreciate bouncy castles or supervised play areas so mom and dad can enjoy the show without having to keep an eye on the kids.

6 drive-in theater ideas that maximize fun at minimal cost

Summer is on its way. Wahoo!

It also means that now that the kids are home and don’t have homework to do, it’s time to start planning affordable family home nights. But that seems to be getting harder and harder, especially with inflation raising the price of seemingly everything, including entertainment.

That’s why you should consider the nearest drive-in cinema.

Drive-ins aren’t just a relic of the past — you might even have one in your backyard. A family of four can watch a movie with snacks and drinks for around $30.

Check out this database from DriveInMovie.com to see if there is a drive-in movie theater in your area. Next, here are some hacks to ensure you get the most out of your drive-in cinema experience.

Tips to help you have a great time at your local drive-in movie theater

I know what you’re thinking: “What could be so difficult, parking a car and seeing a friggin’ screen?”

Well, it’s not difficult. But if you want to be comfortable and have as much fun as possible, here are eight tips for your first drive-in experience, courtesy of guests and staff at the Silver Moon Drive-In Theater in Lakeland, Florida.

And since safety precautions can change suddenly, check with your drive-in theater before going for site-specific updates.

1. Get there early and get a spot near the exit

The drive-in cinema has regained popularity as a cheaper and more socially secure alternative to the traditional Movieplex. Silver Moon’s website specifically asks you to get there early.

First, you don’t have to sit in a long line of cars burning up that precious gas. And second, you can snag a parking space near the exit to avoid the slow-moving trailer after the dual function.

2. Bring your own radio and extra batteries

Here’s the scene: you’re out with the man of your dreams, who’s blown away by your choice of a classic date night. But when the movie is over, you turn the key to start your car and hear that dreaded clicking sound. Your battery is empty.

Don’t let this happen to you; Bring a portable radio with extra batteries. You need to stream the movie’s audio through a radio, and using your car stereo will drain your battery.

Even if you plan on putting chairs in your pickup truck bed or behind your vehicle, you’ll need a portable radio to hear the movie anyway.

Alternatively, you can charge your car battery by turning on your car every half hour or so and letting it run for a few minutes.

3. Bring bug spray

Bugs are a nuisance part of life in the summer.

You’ll be out for a few hours – whether you’re sitting outside on your lawn chairs or just sitting in your car with the windows down – so pack the bug spray to ward off the pests.

4. Plan a whole evening

Check your local drive-in cinema’s website when planning your movie night. Many offer deals for double or even triple features for a single ticket price. It’s a full night of entertainment, so be sure to bring the kids’ pajamas and pillows in case they fall asleep before the last show.

Pro Tip Many drive-ins don’t allow outside dining. Call before you go to ask if you can bring your own snacks.

5. Wear comfortable clothing

Here’s another drive-thru perk: no one will judge what you’re wearing.

Pull out your pajamas for an extra-comfortable drive-thru experience. Or dress up like one of the Avengers.

6. Bring cash just in case

Remember when people actually paid for stuff with those green paper things?

Drive-ins evoke feelings of nostalgia for much simpler times. It could also mean easier times for your wallet. Bring some cash just in case.

Now that you’re a drive-in movie connoisseur, all you need is a cherry red 1950s convertible and you’re ready to go to the movies. Just kidding.

Everything you need to know about a drive-in date night. How to find one, plan one, rock one and what to wear for that movie date night!

It’s been years since we’ve had a drive-in date. Thanks to the closure of our local drive-in cinema, this was not in sight. But due to popular demand for social distancing date ideas, we’ve reopened several across the Phoenix Metro. I bet wherever you live you have options too! I’m so excited we were able to do a drive-in date!

Why are drive-in dates the best?

Socially distanced activities for couples that still allow you to get out of the house

They usually contain double the function for double the fun

Drive-in dates are often cheaper than a cinema date

They advertise a little more PDA since it’s a little less public. Seriously, that’s how cuddles are socially acceptable in the cinema!

You can enjoy the privacy of your vehicle

Cinema concessions can often still be purchased

It’s an intimate date night or a total party of a group date, you can choose to go either way!

How do I find a drive-in cinema near me?

Google will be your best friend here! Lots of new places have popped up this year, and it’s the best place to find out where movies are near you. Also check with your local theatre, some are doing outdoor movies with their regular concessions and restrooms open right now.

How much is it?

This will vary by theater and region. But most places either charge by vehicle and I would expect to pay $20-$40 per car. Or they charge per person in the vehicle. I’ve seen $8-15 per person in Phoenix. Considering what it would cost to see a double feature, it’s still a lot!

Drive-in movie car setup

There’s no wrong way to do this, but you do have a few options for your car setup.

First, you can park facing the screen. You stay in your car or sit on the hood and watch the movie side by side. When the weather is too hot or too cold, let the air run and enjoy the interior of the vehicle any time of the year.

Secondly, you can bring camping chairs and sit in front, behind or next to your car.

If you have a truck, a drive-in movie makes a great date night in the back! We borrowed my parents’ truck and parked it with the back of the truck facing the screen. It offered plenty of space and a great view with the tailgate down! We also parked sideways so we could take friends to a party. It had been years before we were officially dating, but it was a fun option for a group date!

Finally, if you have a hatchback, you can reverse park and sit in your trunk or in the back seats. We are SUV owners and this is our favorite thing to do! When the weather is nice, this is an easy car date idea that we can pull off and really enjoy!

What to bring to an outdoor cinema date

It doesn’t take much to make that date night happen! You literally need a ticker and your car to get in. But here’s a list of some other things to consider to have a really great outdoor movie date!

Meal!

We love supporting the local theater but at this time and season bringing food is a good choice! Pack a dinner, grab some to-go and prep dinner and a movie.

We used the flashlight on our phones several times to set things up and go to the bathroom. If you don’t have one on your phone, I highly recommend bringing one!

Cuddling in the cinema

The number one reason people love drive-in theaters is the cuddle factor! If you’re going on a first date, I’d set aside some space and see how things go. If you’re an established couple, plan a setup that allows for cuddles! If necessary, borrow this truck or SUV.

I would also recommend going in cooler weather. We’ve just been on the hottest day of the year and even with the air conditioning on, it wasn’t the best snuggling at the movies. When it’s cooler, you’re ready for some more physical touch. Just remember to be polite and stick to cuddles or a private make-out session.

What to wear to a drive-in movie

As a girl who loves dresses and skirts, I will tell you that this is the time to be team pants/leggings! First of all, there are often bugs, so be sure to keep your legs covered. But getting in and out of truck beds, SUV hatchbacks, or leaning over car consoles lends itself to pants or leggings.

Look for comfortable clothes that make you feel cute! A solid pair of comfortable jeans and a top that you look and feel good in is our top pick for what to wear to a drive-in movie.

Park where directed to park. If there is no one to guide you, park in designated spaces about 3 meters away from other cars next to you.

As soon as you park, turn off your headlights. Drive-in cinemas are set up in such a way that the lights shine into the eyes of others or bounce off the screen.

Be quiet. Yes, you’re outside and have more distance, but most people can still hear your commentary or sing-along time. Be polite!

Clean up after yourself. Don’t leave litter or dirt behind.

Stay 10 feet away from other cars. A little space is a good thing, especially when you’re social distancing. But much more than that restricts vehicles and is a little rude.

Can I shoot my own outdoor drive-in cinema?

Absolutely! In fact, we highly recommend it! We have a whole post about our outdoor cinema setup and we are planning to do a group drive in movie date with our exact setup! It was one of our favorite purchases and one we use often!

Another tip: take a picture! It’s a sweet date night that you will remember fondly!

In 2014, Bianchi’s son Glenn invested $1 million in renovating the old Paramount drive-in theater. Today, the twin 22-metre-high screens and state-of-the-art digital laser projection allow 21st-century families to step back in time to classic film magic.

4 essential things to take to a drive-in movie theater

The key to a successful family trip is preparation. If you’re going to a drive-in theater, there are a few things you should bring with you. The exact items you should take with you will depend largely on your family’s needs and preferences, but a good place to start is with a spacious bag. There are weekend bags and holdalls for women that can hold many items for your night at the drive-in movie theater.

When choosing a bag for the theater, look for a roomy bag with compartments. You don’t need a suitcase; a zippered bag or an open tote should be sufficient. Even a backpack works when packing drive-in items. Here are some ideas for packing your movie night essentials:

Comfortable pillows or pillows

To ensure you and your family are comfortable, bring some pillows or cushions to sit or lie on. Even if you stay in your vehicle during the movie, you can increase comfort with extra padding underneath you. Children can use pillows if they want to lie down during the movie; You can even create a makeshift bed in the back with a personalized pillow and throw blanket.

Pillows filled with goose down feel airy and luxurious and are available in different sizes. If you or your family are sensitive to feathers, opt for alternative down pillows filled with memory foam or another quality material. Pillowcases come in multiple colors and prints; As mentioned, some can be monogrammed with a name or initials for a customized touch.

An extra layer of warmth

It’s a good idea to bring blankets to the drive-in, especially on chilly nights. You might even want a blanket to stay warm in an air-conditioned vehicle. There are throw blankets for kids and adults; They come in different sizes and many colors. Choose from materials like sherpa and chenille – there are also lightweight cotton blankets that are ideal for summer. Faux fur blankets are another option, or you can opt for a super soft, luxurious cashmere blanket.

It is also advisable to carry a packable jacket for yourself and/or the children. These jackets fold into a small square so you can carry them in your holdall or canvas tote bag. If rain is forecast, you might also want to bring a rain jacket and/or rubber boots. An umbrella is another essential item to leave in the trunk of your car so it’s there when you need it.

Clean clothes for the children

If you have a baby or toddler, consider bringing a change of clothes to the drive-in. While you may not need it, it’s good to have a backup outfit in case of a spill or diaper leak. Choose an outfit that is comfortable and easy to put on. You could pack a pair of girls’ leggings with a tunic top. Girls’ polo shirts are also a comfortable choice – look for lightweight, breathable fabrics with a stain-resistant finish.

Another outfit idea is one of your kid’s favorite graphic tees to wear with jeans for girls or boys. If it’s too hot for jeans, you can bring a pair of shorts with an elastic waistband. Be sure to bring an outfit that your child will enjoy wearing. You might even want to pack a pair of children’s pajamas—especially if you’re watching a double film or planning to go out late.

A selection of snacks

Pack lunch boxes for each family member so everyone has snacks they like. Finger foods are a great choice simply because you don’t have to worry about packing utensils. Fruits and vegetables with a sweet or savory dip are always a good snack choice, whether you prefer grapes, berries, carrots, celery, or other produce.

Popcorn is a traditional cinema snack; Pop your own at home and bring it with you in a zipped storage bag. Throw in some chocolate chips or candy to add the element of sweetness. Other snack alternatives include pretzels and chips. Give everyone an insulated water bottle filled with their favorite drink; The insulation keeps the drink cold throughout the movie.

Pack for convenience and comfort

These are just ideas of what to bring to the drive-in; Create your own portable movie night kit based on your needs and preferences. Fill your ladies holdall or other type of holdall with items to make the evening more convenient and comfortable; You might also want to stock your purse or purse with cards, cash, your ID, and whatever else you need for the evening.

Can you sleep in the back of a pickup truck?

Most truck beds have ample space for a couple of people to sleep in for the night. In many cases, you can even fit an air mattress, sleeping bags, and/or pillows in this space.

How to Make a Drive In Movie Theater Truck Bed Couch: 10 Steps

The cover used to protect the bed of a pickup truck — also known as a tonneau cover — seems like the closest thing to a comfortable place to sleep when camping or traveling. But many still wonder about the effectiveness and safety of this practice. So can you sleep under a tonneau cover in the bed of your pickup truck?

As it turns out, you can definitely sleep under this cover, and it has several advantages including affordability, safety, convenience, and comfort compared to sleeping in a tent.

Suitable mattress cover to prevent… Please enable JavaScript Suitable mattress cover to prevent outgassing

In this article we will examine in detail the logistics of sleeping under a truck tonneau cover and when it is most beneficial. Read on to learn more about the pros and cons.

When can you sleep under a tonneau cover?

People most often resort to sleeping under a tonneau cover when they are traveling and need a place to sleep in a pinch. If you drive a pickup truck and are on a cross-country camping trip, for example, you may find yourself in a position where you cannot find a campsite to set up camp for the night.

Or maybe you can make it to your campsite but don’t have enough time to set up your tent before the sun goes down.

When these situations arise, finding a safe and logical place to sleep for the night is imperative, and fast. This is where a pickup tonneau cover comes into play. Most truck beds have enough space for a couple of people to sleep in for the night. In many cases you can even place an air mattress, sleeping bags and/or pillows in this space.

However, one thing to keep in mind when sleeping under a tonneau cover is that you need to consider your airspace. By completely covering the truck bed with the tonneau cover, you cut off your access to fresh oxygen while you sleep. As a result, most people lower or lower the door to their truck bed to let in fresh air.

Benefits of sleeping under a tonneau cover

It’s extremely beneficial to sleep under a tonneau cover if you have to spend the night in your pickup. Here are some of the key benefits.

It’s cheap and sometimes free

If you can find a Walmart lot, you can park your truck there for the night for free. It’s perfectly legal and a common way to camp in your vehicle if you can’t find a good campsite.

Additionally, if you want a safer environment with possibly more amenities (e.g. a paid pass-only campground with bathrooms), you can sleep under your tonneau cover at an affordable price.

Even campgrounds like KOA sites charge a modest $30-$60 per night where you can safely park your truck and sleep. You get access to bathrooms, showers, convenience stores, and other amenities.

It can be more convenient than tent camping

Sleeping in your truck bed can also be more comfortable than camping at night. In a tent, you don’t have to worry about tipping over and feeling the hard ground dig into your back and sides. But under a tonneau cover you have a flat and smooth sleeping environment, where you can even place blankets and pillows.

Disadvantages of sleeping under a tonneau cover

There are also some disadvantages to sleeping under your truck’s tonneau cover. Consider the following before you do this.

You still have to find a parking space

When you’re driving in the middle of nowhere, you might have a hard time finding a Walmart where you can park your truck for free. Additionally, some campgrounds don’t allow visitors to sleep right in their cars, requiring you to pitch a tent instead.

When it comes to sleeping under a tonneau cover, you may be in trouble as you can’t just park anywhere and sleep.

It’s only safe to a certain extent

Unfortunately, although you are safe and protected from the elements by sleeping under a tonneau cover, you are not safe from intruders or animals. The bed of a pickup truck isn’t exactly like a cab or RV where you can lock the door at night.

When you sleep under a tonneau cover, you expose yourself to the possibility of someone or something getting inside while you sleep.

Conclusion

You can absolutely sleep under a tarpaulin if necessary. While it’s not the ideal place to sleep or camp for the night, it’s a handy bed if you have a pickup truck.

What size mattress will fit in truck bed?

What size mattress will fit in a truck bed? A full or “double” size mattress will fit in just about any size truck bed and is a great sleeping option for 2 sleepers. A full size measures 54″ wide by 75″ long. An all foam full size mattress can easily be cut with a pair of scissors to fit a short truck bed if needed.

How to Make a Drive In Movie Theater Truck Bed Couch: 10 Steps

It can be difficult to find a “real” mattress that fits in your truck bed. The inflatable mattresses are great, but can often deflate over time and are not as comfortable as a foam or innerspring mattress. The Wanderlust mattress is available in a variety of sizes. Simply measure the length and width of your truck bed between the wheel wells. Then choose a mattress size that fits best. For extra short truck beds, you may need to take a saw and cut off a few inches of foam (very easy to do) if you want to completely close your truck bed. The Wanderlust mattress is made of dense support foam and a top layer of memory foam. It also has a zippered cover that can be easily unzipped and removed for cleaning.

10 Tips for a Great Drive-In Movie Experience

It’s been a long month, to say the least. You’re probably ready to get out of the house for a fun night out while still practicing social distancing. Because you know, technically we’re still in the middle of a pandemic. Luckily there are some fun and COVID-19 safe activities like visiting an old-fashioned drive-in cinema, as cinemas are either still closed or just a little too close to be comfortable.

Going to a drive-in cinema is actually new for many people. Drive-in theaters gave way to mega-box complexes with plush race car seats and giant 70-foot screens across the United States. The good news is that family drive-ins have made a comeback since COVID-19 shut down cineplexes. Lo and behold, the drive-in had the good stuff along with the original big screen, which was between 50 and 100 feet wide. And the comfortable seats are your own real racing car seats! Or truck or sedan or whatever vehicle you drive. And you can be your own concession stand! No more need to smuggle in movie snacks!

But you should be prepared with the right stuff to make your drive-in experience the best it can be, whether it’s a date night, a family trip, or a gathering with friends. And we’re here to help with a few tips and ideas.

Make great memories of your evening at the drive-in movie theater

Take your favorite snacks and drinks with you

It’s a retro outdoor take on the full movie experience, so be sure to bring the right selection of snacks and drinks. The drive-in theater may have a discounted section, but it doesn’t hurt to make sure you have your favorites. You know the usual suspects: M&Ms, Milk Duds, Sour Patch Kids, Gummy Bears, and don’t forget to pop some popcorn before you go. Fill the cooler with your favorite soda, water and juice boxes when taking the kids out. Think how much you can get for what you would have paid at the cinema!

Pro tip: some drive-ins charge an additional fee if you bring your own food and drinks. Just like the indoor version, the outdoor theater still makes money from the snack bar, the snack stand or the food trucks.

Pocket some money for concessions

It’s easy to forget and show up somewhere without cash when we’re used to never carrying anything. Maybe they take credit cards, maybe not. Better safe than sorry.

Pack the blankets and pillows

You might as well get comfortable, right? Whether someone is getting tired or you want to snuggle up under the covers while watching a double film of A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, you’ll be ready when the evening chill sets in. Also, it gives you another layer of protection against bugs.

Wear long pants and sweatshirts

Again the bugs and the evening chill. Both can ruin your night if you don’t protect yourself.

Dig up the old radio or download a radio app

Drive-ins used to have a picket array with speakers to hear the movie. Now you can simply tune in to the radio station that the drive-in cinema will use to broadcast its sound. Instead of draining your car battery, try bringing a battery-powered radio with you or using a radio app like TuneIn on your phone and connecting to some good Bluetooth speakers.

take some chairs

If the car is a little cramped for the crowd you’re bringing or you want a better view, you might want to lug around the camp chairs that appear in the parking lot in front of the car, or a blanket to spread out in the back of the truck.

Insect repellent and other personal items

The film will start at the same time as the mosquitoes and other bugs start their night. They will be drawn to any lights you have on and eventually they will find you even in the dark. Make sure you bring insect repellent along with hand sanitizer, tissues, plates, cups and napkins.

Check the weather and game times

Sure, going to the drive-in movie theater on a whim can work, but at least check the weather forecast and see the listed showtimes. And check out the theater’s policies and rules so you can show up like a pro. You might find a fun dual function. But those nights can get long, especially if you bring kids.

bring garbage bags

Instead of cleaning the car when you get home and tired, throw everything in a garbage bag or your empty Gopuff bag to keep things clean and tidy.

If you are taking children, charge the devices and bring them with you

If they get bored with the movie, the kids need something to keep them occupied while you finish watching. Take the iPad, iPod, portable DVD player or whatever else works. And don’t forget your earplugs or headphones when watching Inside Out if you plan on listening to Black Panther!

Simple Steps to Make a Comfortable Truck Camping Bed

The hustle and bustle of the city can get overwhelming, so it’s nice to be able to pack up and head out. Sometimes you just want to disconnect from all the technology and reconnect with Mother Nature, relax and enjoy the beauty that surrounds you. Camping is one of the easiest, cheapest ways to do this — and romantic if there are two of you. One way to make it even easier and more relaxing is to set up a comfy truck camp bed for your adventure.

To make a comfortable truck camp bed, use a quality air mattress and sleeping bag and place a mattress topper or memory foam mattress topper on top of the air mattress. Install a canopy or RV cover on your truck for protection from the elements, or replace a canopy with a truck bed tent.

Make sure the truck tent or canopy is well insulated and has no places where cold or rain can get into your truck camp bed. As for the floor of your truck, the type of mattress you choose will ensure that you are insulated against the cold and hard truck floor. Read this article on “Thermal Resistance of Air-Inflated Mattresses” to find out how mattress size, thickness and inflation affect an air mattress’ temperature.

Can you sleep in the back of a truck?

When camping, the truck bed, with its solid metal walls and floors, automatically gives you a certain level of safety and security. It also lifts you off the ground, which has many benefits.

To sleep in the back of a truck, use an enclosed canopy or a specially designed truck tent along with a comfortable air mattress and warm bedding. For cold camping, the air mattress can be replaced with a memory foam mattress.

When it comes to beds to use in the back of a truck, you have a wide range of air mattresses to choose from. You can be comfortable while saving a lot of valuable space. We’ll show you how to inflate an air bed in our step-by-step guide, so be sure to read this article. Plus, you can store them deflated and inflate them when you’re ready to set up camp. Fortunately, there are now mattresses designed and contoured specifically for truck camping, like these from Amazon. Also read our related article: Is an air mattress good for your back?

If you are camping in a cold place you might opt for a memory foam mattress as it offers the best insulation and needless to say the comfort it offers. Read our article on the benefits of mattress pads to learn more about their cushioning and motion isolation capabilities. Another option is a sleeping bag, but make sure it’s of high quality and has synthetic insulation for a peaceful and warm night’s sleep outdoors. Last but not least, you can opt for a mattress topper as it saves a lot of space and is very comfortable, but it’s not the best choice if you plan on camping for more than a few days.

What size mattress fits in a truck bed?

To find the best truck camp bed mattress, you need to know the inside dimensions of the truck bed. You should measure the length from the center of the tail to the front of the tailgate and up. Then measure the width of each side of the bed and don’t forget to measure between the wheel wells.

The most common air mattresses that fit in the bed of an average sized pickup truck are Full (54″ x 74″), Full XL (54″ x 80″), and Queen (60″ x 80″). Use a shorter 5.25ft air mattress to fit in a short truck bed.

If you prefer a memory foam mattress for the support and comfort it provides, it can be customized to perfectly match your truck camp bed. See our memory foam cutting article if you would like to cut the topper to a custom size. Memory foam can be rolled up but takes up more storage space than an air mattress.

Here are some examples of truck types and mattresses that are suitable:

How to make a comfortable truck camp bed

There are easy-to-follow steps that will help you build a comfy truck camp bed that’s ready for your next quick weekend getaway. Your choice will depend on your destination and the robustness of the campsite you want to enjoy.

To make a comfortable truck camp bed, first cover the truck bed to protect it from the elements. Second, choose an appropriate mattress size that will fit in the bed of your particular truck. Third, place an air mattress or memory foam mattress in the back of the truck. Finally, add a mattress topper along with warm linens or a sleeping bag, pillows, and a blanket.

Step 1. Use a truck tarp or tent to cover your truck bed

Some people already have a canopy or truck skin for the back of their truck. This offers excellent protection, privacy and plenty of space for your truck bed.

If you don’t have one or prefer more space, especially for your head, you might want to opt for a truck tent. A truck tent is easy to set up. It attaches to the side rails of the truck bed or attaches to the wheel arches, giving you plenty of space. It can be stowed compactly to save space.

Truck tents also act as barriers against the sides and bottom of your pickup truck. They are inexpensive and come in a variety of sizes to fit short and medium truck beds. Although most truck tents are water and snow resistant and have some excellent insulating properties, a tent or tarp is not as effective as a hard shell canopy in extremely cold weather.

A tarp can function similarly to a tent but does not provide protection from the sides or bottom of your truck bed. However, it offers protection from unexpected rain. When choosing a tent or tarp, remember to choose the right one to cover your truck camp bed. You can check out this truck bed tent or camping tarp on Amazon.

Step 2. Choose the right size truck camp bed

There are three main sizes of truck camp beds, but the exact dimensions vary from truck to truck.

Short truck beds are typically 5-5.8 feet long

Standard truck beds are 6-6.5 feet long

Long truck beds are 8 feet long.

The exact size of a truck bed varies depending on the model of truck. For example, the Ford F150 has one model with a 5.5 foot bed size, another with a 6.5 foot bed, and yet another with a longer bed. Various bed size options are also available for the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (69.92 inch short bed, 79.44 inch standard bed and 98.18 inch long bed). You need to choose the most suitable mattress size according to your preferences, how many people will be camping with you and which mattress will fit in your truck bed.

Step 3. Choose the right type of mattress

air mattress

An air mattress is a good choice for truck camping as it is very convenient. Many are specifically designed to fit the unique contours of a truck bed. You can store it deflated, which gives you the space you want, and inflate it when needed to give you the comfort you need for sleeping. You can view a bestselling air mattress on Amazon here. Air mattresses are available in different dimensions to fit different truck bed sizes

If you have an air mattress, take extra care that there are no sharp objects nearby, because as soon as it has a small tear or air leak, it becomes unusable. When the weather is really cold, an air mattress is not a perfect choice, although some brands have insulating properties. If you expect extreme cold at your travel destination, buy a mattress topper with heat-retaining properties and read our article on using a mattress topper on an airbed.

Memory foam mattress

If you choose a memory foam mattress, you can recreate the same comfort and support of your bed at home in your camping mattress. Then the insulating properties of memory foam also ensure a warm sleeping environment, as the thickness of the mattress provides an excellent buffer against the elements – allowing you to camp at any time of the year.

A memory foam mattress takes up a lot of space, even when rolled up, and needs to be cleaned thoroughly after the trip. Be sure to read our article on cleaning a futon mattress because these useful tips can be applied to cleaning a camping mattress too. Because of the space a memory foam mattress takes up, it’s not for everyone, but it can be easily customized to perfectly fit your truck camp bed. Here’s a portable memory foam mattress on Amazon that’s lightweight and compact.

Step 4. Bring pillows, sheets and blankets

Some camping mattresses come with pillows attached, but they’re usually not particularly comfortable. So one option is to bring your favorite pillow from home and – depending on the weather – take a blanket with you or even use it as an extra pad. Another option is to purchase a special set of easy-to-wash bedding, especially for camping. Duvet bags like these from Amazon help keep your duvets and pillows clean when you travel.

If you’re young, resilient, and frugal, you might want to buy a sleeping pad to put on your mattress. Sleeping pads offer extra comfort after a long day of hiking and camping. They are practical and available in different versions for different levels of comfort. There are self-inflating sleeping pads that come in different thicknesses to protect you from the ground and give you a good night’s sleep. Here is a highly recommended self-inflating sleeping pad from Amazon

There are also affordable memory foam or cotton mattress pads that are quick to pack and unpack. Read our article on installing a mattress topper on a foam mattress to learn more about the pros and cons of using a mattress topper.

Sleeping bag

A sleeping bag is an obvious choice for some people. However, you need to make sure that the sleeping bag has a synthetic upper that won’t be affected by the condensation and moisture it’s inevitably exposed to.

It’s also important to pay attention to the temperature rating of the sleeping bag to ensure it’s suitable for the weather you’ll be camping in. Read this article titled “Comfort Temperatures for Sleeping Bags” to learn more about the insulation ratings of sleeping bags.

Sleeping bags provide decent warmth when camping in cold weather, but can also be paired with a sleeping pad for extra insulation and padding. This sleeping bag from Amazon has different insulation options and goes well with this sleeping pad for camping.

How to make a camping bed warmer for a truck

As the sun goes down, the temperature will likely drop in most camping situations. While camping on a truck bed gets you off the cold ground, the truck bed itself can also get cold.

To make a truck camp bed warmer, use a well-insulated truck cover or tent, a warm memory foam mattress, a down sleeping bag rated for the temperature you will be sleeping in, and keep everything dry.

Tip 1. Insulate your shelter completely

Ensure your tent or shell is fully insulated against the outside elements with no cold spots or leaks. If there seems to be a leak, you can add additional fabrics or seal the leak. You can also place an insulating mat like this on the floor of your truck bed before setting up the tent to isolate the bed from the cold metal.

Tip 2. Use a sleeping bag and memory foam mattress

If the weather is very cold, you should have both a good quality sleeping bag and a memory foam mattress for truck camping. A memory foam mattress acts as a thermal barrier against the truck bed floor. Memory foam is notorious for retaining heat, which is sometimes considered a flaw but can be very welcome in a truck camping experience. You can find a quality sleeping bag with temperature ratings from 15°F to 0°F and well below. We recommend this Amazon zero degree sleeping bag for truck camping in extreme weather.

Tip 3. Keep things dry

Accumulated moisture in the form of morning dew can cause you to wake up feeling cold. You need to make sure you are completely dry to be able to maintain your warmth while you sleep. Choosing waterproof camping bedding with synthetic outer layers helps wick moisture away from the surface before it can penetrate the bed layers. Also, make sure your mattress and all your other bedding stay dry, not just from rain but from condensation as well. If they get damp, make sure you dry them thoroughly. This camping blanket has a down filling for warmth and a nylon shell for water resistance.

Pull the fabric taut over the foam (which sits on top of the wood) and the wood panel. Pull the overhang around the back of the board.[5]

When measuring, allow for an overhang of approximately 12 inches or 30 centimeters (11.8 inches), or enough to cover the board and foam pad as shown in the image. The next part is easier if you have a friend to help you hold the board and turn the board while you work on it.
