In fact, we only change the oil and oil filters and the fuel filters regularly and have not spent a single dollar on diesel engine components since using CEM products. Modern diesel vehicles (since 2009) must be fitted with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) in the exhaust to prevent this soot from entering the atmosphere.

The target is an 80% reduction in particulate emissions, but the technology is not without problems and our patrols are often called to cars with clogged DPFs.

With Interim Tier 4 equipped machines making their way into the field, we have found that exhaust filter regeneration remains a source of questions for many operators. To answer these questions, let’s take another look at the basics of exhaust filter regeneration. Before we begin, be sure to check out our earlier video blog titled Exhaust Filter Cleaning 101 for a little more background on the basics of John Deere exhaust filter regeneration strategies.

It is important to understand that in most cases the regeneration process does not affect machine operation or require operator involvement. Our exhaust filter regeneration strategies include:

Passive regeneration

John Deere engines and exhaust filter components are designed to operate continuously using passive regeneration, a natural cleaning process in which engine exhaust temperatures are sufficient to oxidize particulate matter (PM) trapped in the exhaust filter. The process runs continuously under normal engine operating conditions – more than 30 percent load factor – and is the most fuel-efficient way of cleaning.

Active regeneration

If the conditions (temperature, load or speed) for passive regeneration cannot be reached, PM must be removed by active regeneration, an automatic cleaning process. This requires injecting a small amount of fuel into the exhaust stream for a short time and raising the exhaust gas temperature to clean the filter. It is important to remember that in most applications active regeneration cleaning will only occur when passive regeneration is not possible due to temperature, load and speed. It serves as a backup system.

Active regeneration begins when the filter is partially clogged. The process takes about 25 to 50 minutes from start to finish. When normal operating conditions cannot be achieved and filter loading occurs, John Deere’s exhaust gas temperature management (ETM) system manages the start and duration of active regeneration. The actual cleaning process takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

Keep in mind that in most cases the regeneration process uses the exhaust heat generated under normal engine operating conditions, so the operator doesn’t even realize it’s taking place. If active regeneration is required, the engine’s control system can increase the exhaust gas temperature to regenerate the filter. In both cases, regeneration does not affect machine operation.

Our exhaust filtration system has been designed to properly maintain itself without operator intervention while being completely transparent to the operator. Most processes involving John Deere Interim Tier 4 engines take place behind the scenes, allowing operators to use their machines in the same way as previous machines powered by John Deere engines.

How long does it take to clean a diesel exhaust filter?

Clean DPF

Once a mechanic arrives at a truck, it usually takes about 60 to 90 minutes to remove the DPF, put it on a machine, clean it for about half an hour, and then put the filter back on the truck. When baking, it can take up to eight hours in the machine. The benefit is that the original DPF stays with the truck, which could increase resale value as its owner can provide full service records.

An alternative is for the owner to remove the DPF and take it or part of it to a service shop. Here the owner gets their DPFs back even if they move them between vehicles of the same specification in the fleet. This requires him to keep a supply of new or cleaned DPFs to install when loaded units are removed. One advantage is the short downtimes of individual vehicles.

Some DPF manufacturers offer an exchange program. Owners send in dirty DPFs and receive already cleaned ones to use in their trucks. This reduces the need to store lots of DPFs, and the cleaned units are guaranteed – but the owner doesn’t know where they’ve been. As long as they work well, most owners don’t care. A new exchange program from Cleaire charges $450 to $650 to swap out a dirty filter for a clean one.

Recently, every DPF manufacturer had to contact CARB to approve this replacement program. Swapping refers to the movement of the same DPFs between different vehicles within the same shared ownership fleet. Renaming means transferring a used DPF from a suitable engine and applying it to another within the same fleet.

Not all manufacturers allow component replacement and/or re-naming. Therefore, in some cases, the original filter must remain on the original vehicle to maintain CARB compliance.

A manufacturer may deny a warranty claim if a fleet owner performs an exchange or renaming and either the manufacturer’s approved guidelines are not followed or the guidelines are not approved in writing by CARB.

Most soot is burned off over the course of a truck’s operation, but ash remains in the filter’s honeycomb substrate and is removed by regular maintenance. The exhaust gases in long-distance trucks are usually hot enough to burn off most of the soot in a process called “passive regeneration”. However, those who drive stop-and-go or idle a lot will not get their exhaust hot enough. The latter must “actively” burn out soot from the substrate by injecting additional fuel just ahead of an oxygen catalytic converter or by connecting an electric heater when parked. It sends pressurized air through the substrate in a series of measured bursts. Detroit Diesel filters are pressure washed with deionized water and then dried. Most filters seen by Cleaire Advanced Emissions Controls, which cleans air from previously manufactured and sold DPFs, collect about 200 grams (7 ounces) of ash. Some come in at up to 600 grams (21 ounces). Ash blowing or washing out must be done every 50,000 miles or once a year. This is also indicated by a warning light. Large fleets have purchased machines to do the cleaning themselves, but most owners take filters or entire trucks to dealers and independent shops for cleaning Trucks with DPFs, only to find that they often need to be removed and cleaned. Therefore, it is important to find out in advance what the cleaning requirements will be, how long they will take and how much they will cost. Sometimes an engine produces extra soot or spits out unburned fuel and burnt engine oil. These too are caught by the DPF and normally cannot burn them out through normal processes. Therefore, the substrate must occasionally be removed from the DPF, then heated and baked in a special machine to burn out the dirt. About 10% of filters brought in for service require it, manufacturers say.

This forces unburned soot through the exhaust system where it eventually settles in the DPF.

It’s important to remember that diesel vehicles are designed for longer journeys and rely on reasonable run times to operate efficiently.

If you mainly drive a diesel vehicle on congested city routes or go to nearby shopping, you’d better switch to a gasoline or electric engine to avoid further engine damage.

How can I fix a clogged DPF?

How does a DPF filter become clogged? If you think about it, like any other filter, there may come a time when it becomes clogged and needs to be emptied and cleaned. This in turn urges the filter regeneration process to start and burn off the collected soot. After this procedure, the results of this regeneration allow the clogged filter to work efficiently again. In automotive, industrial, commercial and residential environments, as well as in common appliances such as vacuum cleaners and HVAC systems, exhaust filters clean the air before it is returned to the normal cycle either in an enclosed space or to the atmosphere.

Because HVAC ventilation releases air into indoor spaces, in both commercial and residential buildings, it is important that they use air filters to ensure high air quality. Often ventilation systems like these use HEPA filters or ULPA filters at their exit point as they remove up to 99% of the microscopic bacteria, diseases and allergens that pose serious health risks.

Household uses for exhaust filters are numerous and important; However, industrial fumes are often extremely hazardous and should not be vented back into a room or into the atmosphere. Unburned hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and sulfur are among the many harmful pollutants released by engines and other combustion processes. If left unfiltered, these gases pose a serious threat to cardiovascular and pulmonary health, as well as increased ozone depletion.

Exhaust filters are an essential part of industrial air pollution or emissions control systems and are often far more complex than commercial and residential filters.

Important specifications to consider when determining an exhaust filter type are porosity, filter size and fiber size, and the required efficiency of the system. The three most common types of household and appliance filters are fiberglass, electrostatic, and polyester filter media pads.

The basic construction of these exhaust filters is a filter panel, or physical barrier made of spun fibers that attract and trap pollutants, held in a frame and placed in a duct system through which an airflow is drawn. However, engine and industrial filters use more complex processes, although filter plates are often an additional pre- or final filter means.

Many of these exhaust filters use a variety of processes that require exhaust chambers, chemical separators, and even incinerators to dispose of hazardous materials. Air scrubbers, thermal afterburners, and mist eliminators all function as industrial exhaust filters. Mist eliminators are popular because they collect expensive materials such as oil that have been atomized by the combustion process and return them to the production process. This option not only reduces harmful emissions but also lowers costs by reducing process waste.

How do you clear a DPF warning light?

If you get a warning light showing that the filter’s blocked, it should be possible to complete an active regeneration cycle and clear the warning light by driving for 10 minutes or so at speeds over 40mph.

Diesels produce a lot of soot (particulate matter), which can cause breathing problems and contribute to the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Modern diesel vehicles (since 2009) must be fitted with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) in the exhaust to prevent this soot from entering the atmosphere.

The target is an 80% reduction in particulate emissions, but the technology is not without problems and our patrols are often called to cars with clogged DPFs.

To maintain performance, a DPF needs to be emptied regularly. This usually happens passively in a process known as “regeneration”: when the exhaust gas temperature is sufficiently high, on motorways or fast federal highways.

The collected soot is burned, leaving only a tiny ash residue.

The ash cannot be removed – unless the DPF is removed from the vehicle and sent for specialist cleaning – but a DPF in a car, used properly, should be good for well over 100,000 miles.

Active regeneration

Many cars don’t have the proper usage for passive regeneration to work, so automakers build in “active” regeneration, where the engine control software detects that the filter is clogged and injects additional fuel into the engine to raise the exhaust gas temperature increase and trigger regeneration.

Active regeneration is initiated approximately every 300 miles depending on how you use your car and takes 5 to 10 minutes. But it’s a problem when your journey is too short and regeneration isn’t complete.

During active regeneration, you may notice:

fans are running

Higher engine idle speed

Auto stop/start does not work

Increased fuel consumption

A hot, acrid smell from the exhaust.

The engine sounds different

Don’t ignore a warning light

If you get a warning light indicating the filter is clogged, it should be possible to complete an active regeneration cycle and clear the warning light by driving above 40mph for about 10 minutes.

If you ignore a DPF warning light and continue to drive in a relatively slow stop-start pattern, soot will build up in the filter until your car goes into “reduced power mode” to prevent damage.

If you let it get this bad:

Just driving at speed is not enough.

You will need to ask a dealer to do a manual or “forced” filter regeneration.

In extreme cases they may need to replace the filter which can cost at least £1000 plus labour.

In most cases, there is only a short time between a partial clogging of the DPF and one so clogged that manual regeneration is required.

If there is a fault with the DPF or the differential pressure sensor that informs your car of the status of the DPF, the check engine light may also come on.

If you buy a new car and use it mainly for city driving and stopping and starting, you should avoid diesel engines with particulate filters

Even if your driving isn’t primarily urban/stop-start, you may need to change your driving style for the system to work properly. Follow all instructions in your vehicle manual.

What prevents normal regeneration?

Frequent short trips where the engine does not get hot

Wrong type of engine oil – check your manual

A fuel system or exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) problem causing excessive soot.

A warning light on the dashboard or a diagnostic trouble code stored in the engine management system.

Exceeding the recommended maintenance interval

If the vehicle is using Eolys™ additive, a low level in the tank may prevent regeneration.

A low fuel level – generally less than a quarter of a tank of fuel – prevents active regeneration.

DPF additives

Most DPFs are installed near the engine where the exhaust gases are hottest, making passive regeneration more likely to work.

However, some cars use a different type of DPF that requires a fuel additive (Eolys™ fluid) to lower the ignition temperature of the soot particles to allow regeneration to occur at a lower temperature.

Additive is stored in a separate tank and automatically mixed with the fuel.

A full additive tank should last about 70,000 miles.

You have to pay (around £200 for fluid and labour) to have the additive tank refilled.

Don’t ignore a warning light indicating that the additive tanks need topping up – without additive, the DPF will quickly clog.

Removal is not a legal option

It is sometimes suggested that you can cut a DPF out of the exhaust and reprogram the engine management software instead of paying for the repair.

DPFs are fitted to meet European emissions regulations and it would be a criminal offense (under the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations) to use a vehicle that has been modified to no longer meet the emissions standards for which it was designed to meet.

Removing a DPF can also void insurance coverage as it will lock the vehicle out of traffic.

Since February 2014, a missing DPF, where one was installed when the vehicle was built, has led to a TÜV failure.

Particulate filters capture more than 95% of harmful particulate matter. Particles from diesel cars pollute the air and are harmful to health and the environment. The particles contribute to the formation of fine dust in the air. These particles are caused by incomplete combustion of the fuel. The quality of the fuel is also an important factor, as is a well-functioning fuel system.

However, the particles remain in the particle filter. The filter fills up over time. The engine management in the car then ensures that the temperature of the exhaust gas is briefly increased to 600 degrees Celsius. This then removes the particles still in the filter by burning them. This process is called regeneration. The service life of the particulate filter is highly dependent on correct regeneration. If this does not happen, the particulate filter will eventually become clogged. When the particle filter becomes too full, the particle filter indicator lights up. Also, the engine may produce less power, be dampened, or not be able to rev up. A particle filter has a service life of 130,000 to 200,000 kilometers. The better you maintain your car and particulate filter, the longer the particulate filter will last. Here are a few tips:

Tip 1 Do not drive at low speeds

The new way of driving encourages driving at low revs, but practice shows that this is not always a good thing. Many motorists drive at too low revs, as a result of which the engine warms up too slowly and the regeneration process does not start; the particles are not burned since no regeneration takes place. Over time, the accumulation of particulates will cause the particulate filter to become clogged.

Tip 2 Drive long distances

If you drive longer distances, the engine can reach its operating temperature and the regeneration process (the actual burning off of the particle filter) can be completed. If this process is constantly interrupted, for example when driving short distances or only in city traffic, the particle filter will clog faster.

Tip 3 Use the right engine oil

The effectiveness and, more importantly, the service life of particulate filters in diesel and gasoline engines are partly determined by the choice of oil. Choosing the right engine oil is just as important. We recommend the use of “Mid SAPS” or “Low SAPS” engine oil in vehicles with particulate filters. SAPS stands for sulfated ash, phosphorus and sulfur.

Tip 4 Have your particle filter checked

When you have your car serviced, make sure your particulate filter is properly inspected. Your local workshop can do this with the help of diagnostic equipment. This shows how full the particle filter is and whether it needs to be cleaned.

Tip 5 Use a DPF cleaner

Use an additive to preventively maintain the particulate filter. Eurol Diesel DPF Cleaner Plus was developed to facilitate the regeneration of a diesel particulate filter when the diesel particulate filter has an above-average particle load. Eurol Diesel DPF Cleaner Plus uses a fuel-borne catalyst to lower the regeneration temperature from 600°C to 400°C and burn carbon more easily. Preventive and regular use of this additive can prevent particle filter problems.
