Gold Mickey Mouse Platy – Platies – Xiphophorus maculatus

These fish are orange with black. Females can reach up to 3 inches while males only reach up to 2 inches. To keep these fish in captivity, the pH of the water should be between 7.0 and 8.2 and the water temperature should be between 70°F and 77°F. The tank should be densely planted and have open areas for swimming and floating vegetation. They are peaceful and can be kept in community aquariums with equally peaceful fish, and should be kept in groups where there should be more females than males. A 10 gallon tank is the recommended minimum for a party of 5 people.

The water in which these fish are packed is different from the water in the tank, as these fish are extremely sensitive to water conditions, the acclimatization process is very important. This process should never be rushed. The aquarium lights should be off for at least the first 4 hours of the fish in the new tank and they should not be fed for the first 24 hours. There are two acclimatization methods: the floating method and the drip method.

Floating method – the aquarium lights should be off, and the lighting in the room should be low. The bag that the fish is in should float on the surface of the water for about 15 minutes to allow the water in the bag to adjust to the water in the tank. The bag should then be cut open under the knot and the top edge of the bag should be rolled down 1 inch, then ¼ cup of aquarium water should be added to the bag, this step should be repeated every 4 minutes until the bag is full, then should discarding half of the water in the bag and refloating the bag, adding ¼ cup of aquarium water to the bag every 4 minutes until the bag is full. The discus can then be moved to the aquarium.

Drip method – the aquarium lights should be off and the lighting in the room should be dim, the bag containing the fish should float on the water surface for about 15 minutes to allow the water in the bag to adjust to the water in the tank. The contents of the bag should be poured into a 1 gallon bucket that has never been cleaned with chemicals, the fish should be enterally immersed. A siphon with air hose should be set up and a drip line should run from the main aquarium to the bucket. Several loose knots should be tied in the air hose to regulate flow. A siphon begins by sucking on the end of the air hose leading to the bucket, the flow should be regulated to 2 to 4 drops per second. Once the water in the buckets doubles, half should be discarded and the process repeated until it doubles again. The fish can then be transferred to the aquarium.
