How Long Does Lipsense Last Once Opened? The 135 Top Answers

lip sense. I’m sure you’ve seen the evidence videos – ladies who take a finger or two and draw them across their lips… and nothing budges. They’ve been popping up in my Facebook feed for months and I’ve been so intrigued. They seem to be the answer to all of our no-budget lipstick dreams. But are they really? Let’s dive into all the details of this magical product!

Let’s break it down first. In order to use the product, you need to buy a color, lip gloss and remover. Without the gloss, the LipSense lip color becomes incredibly sticky and doesn’t work. And trying to remove this at night is almost impossible without the opps remover. So, to try this concept, it costs $55. Or bought individually: lip color is $25, lip gloss is $20, and remover is $10. So this is NOT a drugstore! 😛 I personally think it’s a bit weird that you don’t save at least a few euros by buying it as a set… but maybe that’s just me.

The pattern on my hand was just one layer. These products are meant to be applied in very thin layers, so don’t be alarmed that the pattern is barely visible on my skin. They recommend using three coats to get the most lifelike color and best wear results (see image below to see what three coats look like). To reiterate, you’ll need to apply three coats – waiting 10 seconds between each coat – and then wait a full minute before applying the lip gloss to seal it all in.

How is it used?

The LipSense lip color product feels very thin and runny – almost like putting water on your lips. If there are cracks or dry patches on your lips, I’ve noticed that it could burn easily. Nothing extremely painful, but definitely a little uncomfortable/noticeable. Within ten seconds it seems to be dry and I felt a slight tightness on my lips. Each layer amplifies this tightening feeling. However, once you apply the gloss, your lips will feel much better. That said, this is still the kind of lip product you can feel on your lips all day.

How long does it actually take:

The claim for these lipsticks is that they can last between 4 and 18 hours. Well… for me that’s a very wide range. And 4 hours is still acceptable with many liquid lipsticks… In any case, it easily took 4 hours for me. As soon as I started eating or drinking, it eased up at the corners and inner edge of my lips. Reapplying wasn’t really an option unless I wanted to completely remove the product and reapply… and in my opinion it didn’t look bad enough for that, so I just left it as it is. I wore this consistently for a week and was able to walk all day with most of the product staying in place. Only the corners and inner rim consistently wore out after a few hours.

The “Adjustment Period”:

What I wasn’t aware of before trying LipSense was that there is an adjustment period that can last a week or more. It has something to do with your lips being used to waxy lip balms and lipsticks. Because LipSense is a wax-free lip product, with consistent use, it penetrates your lips with real moisture and the wax debris in your skin will eventually slough off. Once this happens (may take a week or two) the LipSense product works best and stays in place the longest. During this time the lips can look extremely dry and flaky which I have experienced. By the end of a week my lips were already looking a lot better, but wearing LipSense didn’t change it.

So… is it worth the hype?

Yes and no. I know that’s not really an answer, but listen to me!

If you’re not a makeup junkie and would rather just use some simple lipsticks, you’ll love LipSense. They have a shade for everyone and once your lips get used to the product they will last for hours. No more worrying about smudging, fading or peeling. It really is a fantastic product!

For beauty bloggers like me — or any makeup junkie — it’s just not for me. The main reason is that you need to stick to just this line of lipsticks for a long time to really wear for a long time. And if you use other products that contain wax, it will – once again – affect the performance of your Lipsense lipstick. Since I’m a beauty blogger…and I get or buy new lip products all the time…I just can’t commit to one lipstick brand. When I alternate Lipsense with other lipsticks, I only get average wear for a liquid lipstick. And since I don’t particularly like feeling the product on my lips all day and the price is on the higher end of things, LipSense just isn’t for me.

Now that there’s this little army of women who need to know how LipSense works, I take that responsibility very seriously. I want to make sure you know exactly how to wear it because there is a slight learning curve with LipSense. If you’ve tried it and you don’t like it, chances are very high that you’re using it incorrectly. I know this because I wore it the wrong way for months so I wasn’t totally obsessed with the stuff to begin with. Luckily I have a very pushy good friend who loves me enough to make me wear it properly. Bless her heart, I will love her forever.

Okay, let’s break this down, shall we?! Let’s learn how to apply LipSense! I will use the color Coral Reef + Matte Gloss.

Step 1: You MUST have healthy lips! LipSense molecularly bonds to your lips – which is why it lasts all day! So before I apply my LipSense color I like to give my lips a good scrub to ensure my lips are nice and exfoliated. I usually do this in two ways. First, I dab some LipSense lip balm or coconut oil (don’t use other products like Carmex or Vaseline) on my finger, then dip it in a small bowl of sugar that I set by my sink. Then scrub, scrub, scrub! Do this right after your shower so your lips are completely dry when you’re ready to apply your lip color.

The second option is to use a special toothbrush for exfoliation. That seems to be what I do most often because… well, I’m so lazy.

Step 2: Make sure your lips are COMPLETELY dry. I like to take some toilet paper and dab the waterline of my lips to make sure no moisture is left on the lip.

Step 3: Shake your paint tube!

Step 4: Start at your cupid’s bow and pull down the corner of your lip.

Step 5: Add more color to your applicator if needed and then fill in the center of your lips and then pull down to the other corner.

Step 6: It was difficult to get a good picture from this step, so this photo is actually my second layer, but still the same. You will now fill in the waterline of your upper lip – in one go.

You know when you draw with a dry erase marker? If you go over the same spot twice, does the first layer lift a little? It’s very similar with LipSense. Try not to layer the passes until they are completely dry!

Step 7: Add more color to your applicator (if needed) and draw from corner to corner on the outside of your lower lip.

Step 8: Fill in the waterline of your lower lip.

Step 9: Allow this first coat to dry COMPLETELY before applying your second and third coats. It’s also like painting your nails… you know how when you go over wet nail polish, sometimes you smudge the first coat if it’s not completely dry? It will do just that. The new coat can ruin that first coat if it’s not completely dry, so just be patient and wait. It will be tempting, but I believe in you. It should only take a few extra seconds.

Then REPEAT 2 more times! You can use different colors or you can use the icicle color if you don’t want to deepen the color of the first coat but NEED three coats of the product. It just works like that. For a long time I only wore one layer because I didn’t want to darken the color anymore, or I didn’t exfoliate beforehand and was surprised that my color flaked off a few hours later.

If your color is coming off or appears blotchy, it’s not the product. I thought it would be. But honestly, it was mine. If you’re used to wearing lip balm and petroleum jelly, other waxy lipsticks, you’re going through an exfoliating process. It will take a few weeks.

That’s the deal. LipSense contains medicinal alcohol. This exfoliates the lips over time and it’s actually a great thing because it keeps your lips healthy! But if you’re constantly wearing waxy products, the LipSense works to work on that wax buildup instead of your lips. It’s not able to molecularly bond to your lips like it should. If you have problems, give him two weeks. I was very stubborn – I don’t have time for that!!! It took me 6 months to realize that I was the one missing out. But that doesn’t happen for everyone, so don’t worry, there’s just a slight learning curve!

Step 10: When your three coats are dry, seal in your color and rehydrate the lips with your gloss. The color does not hold moisture and feels sticky, similar to gel nails, until you seal it with the shine. Glossy gloss is the most moisturizing of all glosses. If you are new to the system, this is the one recommended to start with and I highly recommend starting with it. It’s a bit stickier and I really hate sticky lip gloss. So what you can do is apply the glossy gloss, rub it in nice and good to bring moisture into the lips, and then go over it with another gloss, like the matte one.

My favorite gloss is the Bougainvillea gloss (why did they have to call it that?! I have to google it every time I want to spell it, haha) which has a bit of a shine but isn’t sticky and is more moisturizing than the matte. If you’ve been a LipSense girl for a while, try the matte lip gloss! It’s one of my favorites!

And that’s it!! Throughout the day you should apply the LipSense Gloss as needed, but you should no longer need color. If you need more color, say it’s fading on the waterline or flaking a little (it shouldn’t after a few weeks of heavy use), simply swipe the gloss off, make sure your lips are dry, and then apply the paint.

Can I wear lip balm over my color? No way! The lip balm is the bomb. However, it must be worn when not wearing LipSense! It will degrade the color. LipSense is a system and must be worn with the gloss – any other gloss/balm will destroy the colour.

Why doesn’t my color last long? It’s peeling, that’s ALL!! LipSense is so great that it works to remove our dead, nasty wax that has built up on our skin! Who wants it to stay that way, right? When the lips are dry and wax has built up (from waxy lipstick, chapstick, etc.) a peeling process can occur. That is a good thing!!! Keep wearing only LipSense products, anything else will interfere with LipSense’s work! Throw that chapstick! Shine at night or apply balm to speed up the process!

Does LipSense have a sun protection factor? Not chemical BUT LipSense has mechanical protection equal to SPF 15!!

What are your favorite colors? Haven’t tried them all yet – although I’ve just bought a bunch more and I’m very excited to try them! So far my favorites are:

You’ve all heard me talk about my favorite lip color, LipSense, which is truly magical. It’s non-staining and lasts 4-18 hours while keeping your lips soft and moisturized. Her!! I swear it has unicorn dust or something that makes it so amazing. Since we don’t have access to a unicorn, we need to follow a few steps to make sure we wear the magical LipSense for as long as possible.

Before applying LipSense, clean your lips with water and then dry them. When you apply your makeup, tiny molecules fall onto your lips, so cleaning your lips leaves a nice, clean surface for the Lipsense to bond to. Then dry your lips so that no water remains. Shake the tube before opening. This will help mix the color properly. Thin layers are key! When you pull the wands out, I suggest scraping most of the paint off the wand back into the tube so there isn’t a lot of paint on the wand. Apply color in one direction. You know how the writing comes off when you use a dry erase marker on a white board and write over it? Same concept. As you go back and forth with LipSense, the wand removes color, so start at one corner of your mouth and go in one direction. If you have to go back and swipe again to get the rest of the lip, that’s fine, but you just don’t want to start in the middle of the lip and go back and forth. Make sure the layers dry before applying the next layer. Three layers is what you want to apply. Top with Glossy Gloss! This seals in the color and moisturizes the lips.

Pro tip: Ditch the wax-based lip balms or lipsticks you use. These contain wax that dries out your lips. Chapstick addiction is real. Thats how it works. You put these products on your lips and before long your lips feel dehydrated and you put more on your lips. It is a doom-loop. Since these contain wax, it acts like a barrier on your lips and prevents your lips from getting hydrated which is why you feel like you need more.

Here’s a way to think about it; You know how when you wax your car (with wax) and then it rains and the rain pearls on your car? Well this wax doesn’t let the rain get into the pain and it just beaded and beaded. The same applies to your lips if you use wax products.

If you use these products while using LipSense, you will not get the most out of your magical LipSense. This is because LipSense actually helps you get rid of the wax buildup in your lips, and if you keep adding wax LipSense just keeps struggling to get it out. Plus, Glossy has Shea and it actually penetrates the color and sinks into your lips, leaving them so soft and healthy you won’t want anything else. Trust me.

My final tip is to exfoliate your lips once a week. I’m a big fan of our Lip Smooth Conditioning Polish. It exfoliates beautifully AND smells like cupcakes. What more could a girl want other than maybe a unicorn to hang out with her in her bathroom? At night, when I go to bed, I apply the moisturizing lip balm. It has more of a lipstick consistency and is matte but when I wake up my lips feel like butta especially after the lips are smooth!!

Staying hydrated will keep your LipSense happy too. If your body isn’t dehydrated, your lips will be happier and not flaky, which will cause them to lose their color. I know this is a struggle for me and I can’t be the only one out there.

Tips for choosing your lip color:

I’ve seen far too many girls become Lipsense reps lately so today’s #SwapItOutSunday is all about this brand as I’m certainly avoiding them. If you’re new to my blog, every Sunday I encourage women to swap out a dirty item for a clean item with the goal of reducing their exposure to toxins. LipSense is not the first nor the last brand that I will bring ingredients attention to and the point of this post is mainly for those who might be misled by this brand as many ask me via email whether this product is clean or not.

This post was inspired by various groups such as EWG and Think Dirty, with all sources linked in each ingredient. Also to anyone who says these are not the ingredients, these are from different Lipsense products, not just one product. If you go to the Lipsense website and explore the LipSense products you will find every single ingredient listed below in these articles – LipSense Liquid Lip Colour, LipSense Gloss, LipSense Ooops! remover and the LipSense lip balm.

There is also a blog that Lipsense reps like to use to dispute this from some chemists and while yes she does share some truths in her scientific findings she totally ignores the fact that there are various studies showing the use of similar products can pose health risks when used together over time. I’ve also worked with chemists on various projects throughout the year and let me tell you that they also share incorrect information. Research is for those out there looking for it, and ultimately it’s up to each person to decide which products to use. Using Lipsense once probably won’t cause these problems, but when you use it for years along with 30 other products with similar ingredients, you start to put yourself at greater risk.

First of all, if a product stays “too long” it’s usually not a good sign as it’s likely made up of long-lasting varnish-like chemicals that I don’t want on my skin, especially in an area where I might ingest it. Second, I don’t like their selling points as most mean very little. Just because something is vegan or cruelty-free doesn’t make it safe. Often this just means they use plastics instead of those items and probably leave the animal testing to their supplier instead. They also mention that their products are {gluten-free}, but did you know that the gluten molecule is too big to penetrate your pores?

While yes, you should be aware of and consume gluten near your mouth, with cosmetics in general the risk of absorption is scientifically non-existent. Fluffy selling points aside, the ingredients are far from clean, as women have had negative reactions like chapped and flaky lips. Many Lipsense reps try to defend the tingly and sizzling women’s experience, but personally I wonder why anyone would want to experience that when there are natural, clean, non-irritating lip glosses on the market?

What you can find in different Lipsense products-

Propylene Glycol – Lipsense glosses actually contain propylene glycol, an ingredient in antifreeze, paint and electronic cigarettes. Many proponents claim that alcohol destroys people’s lip skin, but this ingredient poses risks of skin irritation and should never be used, especially in pregnant women.

Parabens – According to EWG, this preservative has been found in breast tumors with links to hormonal imbalances, allergic reactions, and more.

Disodium EDTA – This is a penetration enhancer, meaning other bad ingredients are more easily absorbed into your skin.

Phenoxyethanol – A common substitute for parabens with links to dermatitis, organ system toxicity and reproductive complications.

Alcohol Denat – This is basically what you drink when you drink alcohol, it’s just been “denatured”. Not only is this super drying on the lips when consumed, but it also has links to birth defects and cancer.

Ferric Ferrocyanide – This ingredient is classified as Probable Toxic with links to organ system toxicity and allergic reactions.

Perfume – I always avoid any product with the word “perfume” or “fragrance” unless it’s 100% natural. Synthetic fragrances are disruptive and carry the risk of hormonal imbalances and allergic reactions.

Acrylate Copolymer – This ingredient, frequently tested on animals, has links to skin irritation and allergic reactions, which depending on the source may be contaminated with toxins.

Propylene Glycol – Links to Contact Dermatitis, Organ System Toxicity + Allergic Reactions.

As you can see I wouldn’t use this line but luckily there are other brands without all of the above! If you need help choosing a cleaner lip gloss, you can explore my favorite more natural alternatives here.

Anyone who wears lipstick wants it to last a long time. Apply it once in the morning, maybe touch it a few times during the day – at most. But we’ve all had lipsticks that require too much maintenance and not enough payoff.

Now there’s a product called Lipsense that has caused the opposite problem: how do I get the damn stuff off? The lipstick is waterproof and lasts up to 12 hours. According to the company, it won’t “kiss off, rub off, rub off, or peel off,” but for many women, both application and removal could be more of a hassle than it’s worth.

What is Lipsense?

Beauty company SeneGence International’s lipstick is sold as a lip kit that includes lip color, gloss and a glycerin-based product called Oops! remover. It is available online or from direct sellers, similar to the Mary Kay model. (And these hustlers are all over Facebook).

The application process is somehow so tedious that it requires an instruction page and instructional video on the website. First, apply three coats “in one smooth, sweeping motion, without lifting the applicator,” and wait for your lips to dry completely between each application. Then apply a layer of lip gloss to keep your lips from drying out.

How to remove Lipsense

If applying is a pain, removing as a whole is a separate (lip) pain. The LipSense lip kit comes with an Oops! Remover that supposedly removes lipstick with one wipe, but apparently it’s not always that simple.

Youtuber Elissa Bruce says the remover is better at fixing mistakes you make while applying than removing it. She recommends Fooops! Remover, also from SeneGence. Shake, spread on your lips and leave on for 20 seconds before rubbing off with a washcloth. She also suggests coconut oil and even a Neutrogena facial soap, which she dips with a cotton swab and then rubs onto her lips before applying a damp washcloth.

Refinery29 writer Cat Quinn likened trying to get it off to “removing gel polish but on your lips.” She applied Shu Uemura oil, two rounds of Sara Happ lip scrub, and used a toothbrush and washcloth on her lips before gutting them completely. Cosmetic chemist Ni’Kita Wilson told Refinery29 that the product’s tenacity is due to its water- and oil-resistant ingredient called Acrylates/Octylacrylamide Copolymer, which is also used in waterproof mascara.
