How Long Travel-Sized Shampoo Will Last You
Ever get ready for a long journey and wonder if that travel size bottle of shampoo will do? Should you throw in another bottle just in case?
Sometimes, when I have a particularly long trip ahead of me, I’ll toss in a bottle of the same kind, so two more shampoo bottles, just to make sure my bases are covered. If I don’t have room for the extra bottle, I still save more money by not checking in ($25 for a household bag) and buying an extra travel-size bottle later (usually no more than $1-3). In the end, you’re still making progress.
But how the heck do you know how long a travel-size product will last? TripAdvisor poster TABofotd claims a travel size shampoo lasts 3 weeks, conditioner 6 weeks, hairspray and hair gel a month.
For a guy, that might work. As a girl, I totally disagree – and so does Aida, founder of LippieHippie.com. To answer this question, I decided to test everything crazy to see how long a full TSA-approved bottle of shampoo would last me. It turns out that most people should estimate around 2 weeks, maybe longer depending on a few factors.
First, we need to be clear about how big a travel-size bottle actually is. The amount you are technically allowed to continue is 100 ml or 3.33 ounces.
Most people in the world know that it’s just easier to use 100 by default, but if you’re from the US most people generally round down to 3 ounces because that’s a lot easier to remember. However, if you really want to pack every single drop of liquid, you can get away with 3.4 ounces.
However, there are two factors you need to consider before figuring out how long this tiny little bottle will last you.
The first thing to note is that each “travel size” product is 3 or 3.4 ounces; When the manufacturer gossips “travel size,” it just means the amount of liquid it holds is less than the TSA limit.
(I’ve had a lot of travel-size products with only about an ounce in them, so I research that number on the bottom a bit more in the business these days. One ounce is hardly going to get me through three or four days!)

The second thing to remember is that personal use is different from everyone else as everyone has their own shower habits.
For example, I have long thick Asian hair and sometimes I really need to use more than the average person just to get a good lather. Additionally, I go through conditioner much quicker than shampoo to comb out any tangles. Some people condition only occasionally; I am forced to condition every day.
If I use about a tablespoon of product each time — a generous amount IMO — that should last about 6 uses in a 3-ounce bottle (6.8 uses in a 3.4-ounce bottle). On the realistic side, if you cut in half how much you use each time, you could get away with 12 uses or more (13.5 uses in a 3.4-ounce bottle). This means you’ll average about 1.5 teaspoons or less each time.
Assuming you shower at least once a day and depending on your usage, a travel size bottle should last anywhere from a week to two weeks. Boys should have it a lot easier.
To make it easy, I took two of the most common sizes and did a few calculations to get an estimate of how long a shampoo (or even body lotion) would last on me:
Bottle size Amount you want to use 1 tbsp 1.5 tsp 1 tsp 3 oz (89 ml) 6 12 18 3.4 oz (100 ml) 6, 8 (~7) 13.6 20.3 (~20)
Then, to see how that stacked up in real life, I took a 3-ounce bottle of shampoo to the street…and I kept counting until I ran out of product.
About a teaspoon on average (I needed a lot less for this particular brand) which is far less than what I usually use, it lasted 22 uses or 22 nights or about three weeks. That means I’ve had about four more uses of it than I thought I would. (At the same time, I tried to squeeze out every bit at the end, so that’s it.)
The table above is a guide only, but there is room for variation. Says my unscientific test. Your mileage may vary depending on how much hair you have.
