Intelligent and fragile, the squirrel family is one of the most widespread on earth. And Super Squirrels, a show by Tom Jarvis which premiered on Sony BBC Earth on Saturday, reveals these cheeky creatures’ extraordinary abilities and sees their problem-solving skills put to the test.
The show also features some extraordinary discoveries the team made about the fox squirrel species and the gray squirrel species that can make giant treetop leaps. Jarvis, known for directing various wildlife series such as Nature, Tigers About the House and Deadly Mission Madagascar, said he was fascinated by squirrels’ black eyes and squishy stories.
I’ve always been curious about this animal, how they silently conquered the planet. They are very adaptable. This show is very different from the ones I used to do because it’s the most popular animal and people know little about it, he told Mail Today.
You watch this and you will see how incredible and adorable they are. At the same time they are brave. It would be really nice to spend some time observing about squirrels with your family.
The show also follows a Eurasian red squirrel named Billy who was raised at a sanctuary in Scotland as he develops the skills he needs to be released back into the wild. Jarvis spent almost six months with Billy and absolutely loved being a part of his journey.
Squirrels are amazing. They can survive temperatures we never could. Some can practically leap five feet in the air, and it’s amazing how their muscles allow them to do so. In fact, scientists are trying to understand these giant leaps, Jarvis said.
The Indian red squirrels also fascinated the filmmaker as some of the largest and most colorful species are found in the Western Ghats.
We were able to present that with the help of some local cameramen. I had read about them online and found they often come out during ginger jackfruit season, Jarvis added.
Luckily, they got footage of a squirrel trying to crack open a jackfruit. Among other things, the team found that the squirrels have an incredible grip.
They can easily run up and down trees, which means they use hyper-flexible ankles that rotate easily, Jarvis explained.
Jarvis has spent 15 years training himself and filming wildlife. We rely heavily on the connections we have within the scientific community. With the scientific data, we learned about a squirrel’s memory, flexibility and much more. Research aside, there’s a lot of planning involved before launching a show, he added.
The crew often faced challenges, including a gray squirrel named Contel. We were outwitted by Contel on the obstacle course. Every time we reached him, he quickly found a roof to climb and hide on. He would disturb the other squirrels by jumping over them. One of the other challenges we faced was shooting alongside different species of squirrels, Jarvis said.
But the director also had fun. The squirrels would jump on our gear. They sat on my lap for hours and played. I became part of their playground, which I absolutely loved, he happily recalled.

And anyone who thought hanging the feeder by a rope or wire instead of a pole would stop determined seed thieves was in for a surprise. And to be completely honest, I can understand this peculiarity of theirs. What can I say, I take food very seriously.
