But luckily, the process is pretty simple.

Get ready for many visits to the DMVs office to fill out multiple forms. It helps if you have the forms ready to save time.

You fill out the Original Registration Application, a self-explanatory document that allows you to register the vehicle on the books of the state DMV.

You must also complete the Declaration of Construction, which allows the department to determine the value of your kit car for tax purposes.

And there is vehicle shape verification and many others.

You must also obtain the California Vehicle Identification Number, among other documentation. In addition, the vehicle must pass emissions tests and the brakes and lights must be certified by a qualified workshop.

There’s a lot to do before California allows your kit car to share its roads with other road users.

But with the right information, patience and a bit of luck, everything will fall into place.

What are the requirements for a street legal car?

So what does street legal for a car mean and what are the requirements?

A street legal car is a car that has all the features and equipment required by law to be used legally on public roads without restrictions or special permits.

The Department of Motor Vehicles in each state sets the road legal standards for vehicles operating on its territory.

Because of this, it can be extremely difficult for kit car drivers to gain street legal status in places like California, New York and New Jersey because of their strict emissions standards, while places like Florida are more lenient.

However, there are universal requirements that all vehicles in the United States must meet in order to be street legal. They include:

In order to use a car on public roads, it must have working bumpers front and rear, and they must meet DOT specifications for material and ride height.

To be street legal, your vehicle must carry a license plate on a lighted area of ​​the car so it can be seen from 100 feet away.

Most states are lenient if you make a kit car based on the chassis of old vehicles, e.g. from before the 1950s. The reason for this is that vehicles from that era are still allowed to drive on the roads with little control.

So if you can get an old pre-50’s hood or frame for your dream car, you can skip rigorous inspections. The process becomes more tedious and lengthy if you are using a new chassis or the car is a newer model from a major manufacturer.

You may be subject to strict emission standards, crash tests and several other energy-sapping formalities.

Depending on your state, legalizing your kit car will look like this:

Contact the DMV office for forms and other documentation. In California, this includes the application for ownership or registration, the declaration of construction, and other such forms.

When the lockdown is lifted, more people will want to get their car back on the road and that means you need to reverse the SORN process. Luckily it’s very easy. All you have to do is visit the dedicated DVLA website and re-register them for tax. You can start using your car again immediately once you have completed the process online, paid taxes and re-insured the car as the records are updated instantly.

If you obey the motor vehicle laws as set out in the UK, you shouldn’t have any problems if you’re ever stopped or stopped by a police officer, provided you’ve obeyed all traffic rules!

Have you ever wondered how much work it actually takes to build a car and make that magic happen? An average car has around 30,000 parts. Once these parts are made and brought to the final production line, it takes automakers around 18 to 35 hours to produce a mass-market vehicle — from welding to full engine assembly to painting. That’s around 3 to 4 typical shifts, with hundreds of skilled workers supporting different parts of the process.

Build the concept, build the parts

Design and engineering come first before any part comes off the press. Car and Driver provides a breakdown and general timeline of these early stages. Deadlines depend on how new a design is – or how much invention and development engineering will be required. The concept design phase (just developing the vehicle’s looks and basic aerodynamics) can take two years or more. Engineering and continuous development are prerequisites to staying at the forefront of the industry, so measuring the time spent on these efforts is not easy.

To build a new car, car companies need to have all the parts made in one place. If the vehicle is mass-produced, volume automakers will outsource many of the parts from suppliers unless those parts are protected as top-secret intellectual property. Vendors include machine shops that make the tools, suppliers of mass-produced and specialty parts, technology companies, distribution facilities, and so on. Car companies have very different opinions on how much work can be outsourced: some prefer to retain direct control of all assembly, engineering and so on. Others turn to OEMs, suppliers and other outside innovators for parts of the build process and high-end technology development, and the automaker focuses on brand-defining efforts such as quality testing, design and marketing.

By the time you finish reading this article, seven more Dodge Calibers will be built at Chrysler’s Belvidere Assembly Plant. That’s one that completes every 42 seconds. Not bad considering that just 19 hours ago each car was made from little more than steel and around 1,800 different parts.

The Caliber is one of three automobile models to be manufactured by the Chrysler Group at the massive facility roughly the size of 77 football fields.

Every day, more than 3,400 people and 900 robots work three shifts around the clock to convert these parts into nearly 1,450 Dodge Calibers, Jeep Patriots and Jeep Compasses.

These cars travel about 11 miles along the assembly line, a series of automated elevators and conveyors that transport them to and from the work stations where the cars are assembled.

Teams of workers and robots cut, shape, form, weld, sand, wipe, paint, fasten, move, wire, polish and inspect the cars at various stages of the process.

If all goes well, the line only stops for a few scheduled breaks and when the workers have a quick lunch. Every man, woman and machine has to work fast. Because to build a car, teamwork is essential. If part of the assembly process fails, production in other areas of the plant usually also stops.

The workers depend on each other – and on the machines that help them build the cars. Each person’s role is important, as is the role played by teammates on a sports team.

Two of those team members are Cardell McAlister and Al Porter. They work at the beginning of the assembly line, in the “punching”. It’s a part of the plant where coils of steel weighing as much as six elephants are unloaded from trucks. The steel is used to make what is known as the underbody or metal skeleton of an automobile. A steel “skin” also covers the underbody. No plastic body panels are used on these cars.

It is up to Mr. McAlister and Mr. Porter to use heavy machinery to load the coils of steel onto a press called the Blanker. It’s a huge, orange machine, about the size of a two-car garage. The blanker unrolls and cuts the steel into car parts much like a cookie cutter shapes dough.

Every few seconds, the noisy blanker will pinch and shoot out different sized steel shapes that are welded (or bolted) together.

Behind a clear Plexiglas wall, Mr. McAlister and Mr. Porter monitor the process using a giant computer. When a coil of steel runs out, they quickly replace it so their colleagues down the assembly line have the parts they need to get the job done.

In the tool shop, the next station on the assembly line, the most distinctive parts of the steel body of a car – for example the doors and the hood – are formed.

Next week, as we continue our journey to see how cars are made, you’ll hear about storage racks that appear to move around the factory on their own, and emu feather dusters preparing cars for painting.

How long does it take to make a car?

Have you ever wondered how long it takes to build a car? It’s a lot less time than you think. But before we look at the actual numbers, let’s take a look at history and then settle on some definitions.

The finest example of automobile manufacture from the olden days is the Model T. Henry Ford is credited with revolutionizing the automobile industry, but he did much more. He revolutionized manufacturing in general – in all industries. He did this by standardizing parts, limiting options, and choosing materials that lent themselves to quick assembly. Most importantly, he developed machines that would either perform tasks independently or assist workers and speed up the process. Was he successful? Let’s put it that way. He and his associates developed systems that reduced the total assembly time for a Model T from 12.5 hours to 93 minutes. That’s a pretty impressive 87.6% reduction in production time.

How does that compare to today’s assembly time? It’s not a fair comparison. Today’s vehicles are a good deal more complicated than they were in 1925. They’re designed to be safer, capable of speeds unheard of in 1925, and to last for years.

One of the things that made Henry Ford’s factories even more relevant today is their use of pre-assembled parts. So let’s agree on some definitions. When I talk about how long it takes to “build a car”. I am referring to the time it takes to assemble all the parts brought together at the final assembly factory. It is assumed that many assemblies or sub-assemblies come into the plant ready for installation. That seems to miss a large part of the overall manufacturing process, but it still involves a lot of work.

The bodies are stamped out, interior fittings installed, wiring harnesses laid – that’s a lot of work. Toyota estimates that its SUVs have around 30,000 parts. Some may come into the final factory as part of an assembly ready to be integrated into the new car. Some come in as raw materials that are made on site.

A large part of the car arrives at the final assembly plant ready for installation. Things like seats, radios, wiring harnesses and motors to run all the different power supply accessories all come into the assembly plant ready to be installed. However, the body itself is usually made at the final assembly plant and controls much of the assembly process.

Body assembly is amazingly complex. Steel of many different types is stamped and shaped. The different materials are carefully placed according to the engineers’ design and ensure things like crumple zones, penetration protection and cabin integrity. The various materials are robotically welded into a unit that superficially resembles a car, known in the industry as the “white body”.

The white body is then inspected both by laser-guided systems and by hand. From there it is cleaned, coated with a primer, dried and inspected again. If it passes inspection, it gets its coat of paint, further drying, and then a clear coat. The final step is a few minutes in an oven to bake the finish and set the color. Only then does it go into the production line to be assembled with the interior, drive train and remaining parts.

The sum?

So we cheated a bit by just counting the time it takes for final assembly. It would be impossible to track the production time for every screw, nut and bolt.

The assembly time is very different. The entire process varies from car to car and from manufacturer to manufacturer. Cars with a lot of manual work, like a Rolls Royce, can take up to six months to produce. Rolls Royce has very limited sales and the slow production time is not a problem. Also, many people expect the slow speed of production and assume that this allows for a higher level of quality and personal attention.

Amazing is the speed at which cars and trucks can be made in high production. Toyota publishes a considerable amount of information about its production processes and figures. They estimate that assembling a well-equipped car, truck or SUV takes around 17 to 18 hours. Other manufacturers have similar numbers. Some less well equipped vehicles can be assembled in as little as 11 hours.

The surprising thing is that they take about one vehicle off the production floor every 45 to 90 seconds. The largest factories produce over 400,000 cars a year.

I know what you’re thinking. Henry Ford released cars with an assembly time of 93 minutes and that’s a lot more impressive. But is it really? I think it’s hard to compare. What he did was amazing. He was a true trailblazer, transforming manufacturing and modern life for all of us.

Admittedly, the speed with which he could get a car out was – and is – impressive. But let’s make sure we’re comparing apples to apples.

The car that Henry Ford produced had approximately 1481 parts. The current Toyota SUVs have about 30,000 parts. So instead of looking at total assembly time, let’s look at the number of seconds it takes to install a part in a Model T and modern car. The Model T, with its impressive assembly time of 93 minutes, required an average assembly speed of 3.76 seconds per part. Today’s Toyota manufacturing process is much faster. They are an average of 2.04 seconds per part.

After all, what do you think takes longer to install a 2-speed transmission with cotton and wood trim or an 8-speed 4WD transmission with as many parts as the entire Model T?

If you’re trying to build a sports car from a kit (not uncommon) it will likely take longer than trying to build a sedan (not recommended). Some basic handy things to chew on: If you live in a colder climate, especially one with very harsh and snowy winters, you won’t be able to work comfortably during the winter months. Even in a garage, the cold penetrates and makes working on the car more difficult. As expected, larger cars take longer to build.
