Region in Ladakh, India

Nubra, also called Dumra, is a historical region of Ladakh[1] currently administered as subdivision and Tehsil in Leh District. Its inhabited lands form a three-armed valley bisected by the Nubra and Shyok rivers. Its Tibetan name Dumra means “Valley of Flowers”.[2] Demands have been made and the BJP has indicated the creation of Nubra as a new district.[3] Diskit, the headquarters of Nubra, is 120 km north of Leh, the capital of Ladakh.

The Shyok River meets the Nubra River (or Siachan River) and forms a large valley separating the Ladakh and Karakoram ranges. The Shyok River is a tributary of the Indus. The valley’s average elevation is more than 10,000 feet (3,000 m) above sea level. The usual access to this valley is via the Khardung La pass from Leh.

Foreign nationals require a protected area permit to visit Nubra. Since April 1, 2017, Indian citizens have also had to obtain an Inner Line Permit for the visit.[4]

Nubra (Tibetan: ནུབ་ར, Wylie: nub ra, THL: nup ra) means “west” in Ladakhi, referring to the “western valley”, perhaps distinguishing it from the sparsely populated eastern Shyok River valley. The traditional name of the region is Dumra (Tibetan: ལྡུམ་ར, Wylie: ldum ra, THL: dum ra), meaning “Valley of Flowers”.[2]

Alexander Cunningham listed Nubra as one of the five natural and historical divisions of Ladakh.[5] Nubra occupies the north-eastern part of Ladakh, bordering on the north with Baltistan and Sino-Turkestan, and on the east with the Aksai Chin plateau and Tibet. In Cunningham’s view, Nubra encompasses the entire region drained by the Nubra and Shyok rivers. It is 128 miles long and 72 miles wide, forming an area of ​​9,200 square miles. It extends south to Pangong Lake.

In modern nomenclature, the Nubra region is divided into “Diskit Nubra” in the north and “Darbuk region” in the south, both of which are considered tehsils and subdivisions of Leh District.[7] The Diskit Nubra region includes the Balti-populated Turtuk bloc, which became part of Indian-administered Kashmir after the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War, and the uninhabited region of the Siachen Glacier.[8]

The settled part of Nubra is often described as a “three-armed valley”,[9] the three arms are:

Topography[ edit ]

Like the rest of the Tibetan Plateau, Nubra is a high-altitude cold desert with infrequent rainfall and sparse vegetation except along the river beds. The villages are irrigated and fertile, producing wheat, barley, peas, mustard and a variety of fruits and nuts including blood apples, walnuts, apricots and even some almond trees. Most of Nubra is inhabited by Nubra dialect or Nubra Skat speakers. The majority are Buddhists. At the western or lowest end of Nubra near the Line of Control, i.e. the Indo-Pak border, along the Shyok River, the residents of the village of Turtuk Balti are Gilgit-Baltistan speaking Balti and Shia and Sufia Nurbakhshia Muslims.

The Siachengletscher lies north of the valley. The Sasser Pass and the famous Karakoram Pass lie in the northwest of the valley and connect Nubra with Uyghurs (Mandarin: Xinjiang). Much trade used to flow through the area with western China’s Xinjiang and Central Asia. The people of Baltistan also used the Nubra Valley to cross to Tibet.[11]

Places[edit]

The town of Diskit in the valley has become the meeting place for the people of the region. Diskit is the headquarters of Nubra and therefore has many government offices with basic facilities. It is also connected to Leh by road.

Along the Nubra or Siachan River lie the villages of Sumur, Kyagar (called Tiger Hill by the Indian Army), Tirith, Panamik, Turtuk and many others.

Itineraries[ edit ]

The main road access to Nubra is via the year-round Khardung La pass. The highest elevation of Khardung La is 5,359 m (17,582 ft), its status as the world’s highest motorable road is no longer accepted by most authorities.[12] An alternative route, opened in 2008, crosses the Wari La of Sakti east of Khardung La and connects to the main road system of Nubra via Agham and Khalsar along the Shyok River. There are also walkable passes across the Ladakh Range from the Indus Valley at various points. Routes from Nubra to Baltistan and Yarkand, while historically important, have been closed since 1947 and 1950 respectively.

The Nubra Valley was open to tourists until 2010 as far as Hunder (the land of sand dunes). The region beyond Hunder gives way to a greener region of Ladakh due to its lower altitude. The village of Turtuk, unseen by tourists until 2010, is a virgin destination for people seeking peace and an interaction with a tribal community of Ladakh. The local Muslim tribe, the Balti, follow their age-old customs in their lifestyle and speak a language that is only spoken and not written. For tourists, Turtuk offers quiet campsites with environmentally friendly infrastructure.

Panamik is known for its hot springs. Seven kilometers of sand dunes lie between Hundar and Diskit, and Bactrian camels (two-humped) graze in the neighboring ‘forests’ of sea-buckthorn. Non-locals are not allowed to enter the Balti area below Hundar village as it is a border area.

Monasteries[ edit ]

The 32 meter tall Maitreya Buddha statue is the symbol of Nubra and is maintained by Diskit Monastery. The main village of Diskit on the Shyok River is home to the dramatically situated Diskit Monastery, built in 1420 AD. Hundar was the capital of the former Nubra kingdom in the 17th century and is home to the Chamba Gompa.

Samstanling Monastery is located between the villages of Kyagar and Sumoor. Across the Nubra or Siachan River at Panamik lies the remote Ensa Gompa.

Flora and fauna[edit]

The valley is famous for its forest of Hippophae shrubs popularly known as Leh berry. In this scrub forest one can observe the white-browed tit warbler. One can also see the Tibetan Lark, Hume’s Short-toed Lark and Hume’s Whitethroat. The various waterfowl such as shelduck, garganey, pintail and mallard can be seen at several small bodies of water along the route. In addition, shorebirds such as black-tailed godwit, sandpiper, greenshank, redshank, green sandpiper and ruff can be sighted in Nubra.[13]

Education [edit]

The valley was remote, like most of the outer parts of Ladakh. Almost the entire region struggles to get quality education. There have been government initiatives in the past, but extreme weather conditions and proximity to borders have been a major hurdle in implementing a solid educational base. There is also a migration of population coming to the major cities of India and hence people do not benefit from their local learned population. There are very few non-governmental organizations active in the Nubra region.
