I don’t know how many times we’ve seen this. It was, after all, one of his absolute favourites. Pixar’s blockbuster The Cars, the computer-animated story of Lightning McQueen who aims to become the first rookie to win the famous Piston Cup race. The film would begin with McQueen’s above monologue, a self-motivating mantra he repeats before each race. When the timer runs out, the doors of Mac, the veteran supporter wearing him, would open; and we hear the battle cry “Oh yeah” as the cameras flash in the background. Every detail of that opening scene was engraved in our minds; such was the time of the exclamation. We shouted with him: “Oh yeah”. Because we were McQueen.
I never realized how much McQueen’s mantra described me, from my mannerisms to my entire philosophy of life, until he was gone. I was speed; I had to be faster than fast, faster than fast. I had to be active, or “proactive” if you’re into those fancy neologisms, to just live. Speed and action were a means of survival. I felt like I would die, cease to exist if I slowed down, let alone stop.
Now people are telling me to slow down. People who genuinely love me and care about me with the best of intentions. I know they are right. Both in their diagnosis and in their proposed cure. “Slowly,” they say. “You’ve been racing all these years. Now is the time to slow down and take care of yourself.”
Some, like the wise P., introduced me to Slow Living, the movement born in Italy in 1999, through the idea of cittaslow or slow cities. “Cities where people are still curious about the old times, cities rich in theatres, squares, cafes, workshops, restaurants and spiritual places, cities with untouched landscapes and charming craftsmen, where people still recognize the slow passage of the seasons can and their genuine products that respect taste, health and spontaneous customs,” as explained in the Cittaslow manifesto.
Others warn me about the dangers of speed, especially after a traumatic experience. “We know you are seeing tangible results and want to start your life over. A life that is not structured around him. A life that includes him, but doesn’t just consist of him.” “It’s all very understandable,” they say, “but not feasible”. Again, I know they’re deep inside. It is neither realistic nor healthy to expect others to match my pace. Why should they? You have not experienced what I have experienced. They may have had similar traumas in their past, but there is no set way to recover from coping with the loss. And people are different. As far as we know they may have the opposite need not only to slow down but also to isolate themselves, to enter into a dialogue with their inner selves. Who can I expect to hold my hand and run with me to an unknown, undefined destination?
So where does this leave me? How am I supposed to break the impasse? It’s not that I’m not trying to slow down. To breathe and enjoy every single breath. But the moment I slow down, my mind starts playing tricks on me. I start asking questions and soon I’m faced with the worst question of all: “Why?”. Unable to find a reasonable answer, I become completely van Gogh, disappearing into a dizzying labyrinth of memories and images, paralyzed by a sudden outburst of anger. Like van Gogh, the anger is directed at myself because, as he put it in a letter to his brother Theo, “I can’t do what I want to do, and in a moment like that you feel like you can bound hand and foot, feet lie at the bottom of a deep, dark well, utterly helpless.”
And that leaves me nowhere. My dead end is a deep, dark well. I fill the well with projects, words, (often failed) connections, but the well leads nowhere. It’s really deep and dark. Speed keeps me alive. anger too. For now.

Montgomery “Lightning” McQueen is a fictional anthropomorphic stock car who is the protagonist of the Pixar animated film series Cars, including Cars, Cars 2 and Cars 3. He also appears in the television series Cars Toons. McQueen is a playable character in every installment of the Cars video game and also in other Disney/Pixar video games. He has a cameo appearance in Planes: Fire & Rescue.[1] Lightning McQueen is the face of the Cars brand and a popular Disney mascot.
McQueen is a professional racer in the Piston Cup circuit, which is modeled after the NASCAR Cup Series, and has achieved seven Piston Cup victories over the course of his career. In Cars 2, he moves to compete in the World Grand Prix. At the end of Cars 3, he retires into a mentoring role for a new generation of racers.
In the films, McQueen is sponsored by Rust-eze Medicated Bumper Ointment and wears their decals. His body is red with yellow and orange decals, displays the number 95 on his sides, and has blue eyes. Its looks are updated through the films but generally maintain the same image. McQueen is briefly seen in Cars 3 with no paint or decals. He is voiced in the films by actor Owen Wilson.

You see Jordan in his prime against every other player, he’s playing a different game. McQueen’s design is primarily inspired by and based on various 4th generation NASCARs. However, it has a curvaceous body like the Plymouth Superbird and Dodge Charger Daytona NASCARs. The exhaust pipes are from the Dodge Charger NASCARs of the 1970s, but with four (two on each side) instead of two on one side or one on both sides. Its body takes cues from the Ford GT40 and Lola T70, along with the cab of a 1990s Porsche 911.[4] Its number was originally intended to be 57, Lasseter’s year of birth, but was changed to 95, the year Pixar released his first film, Toy Story. McQueen’s engine sounds emulate a Gen 4 NASCAR in Cars, and in Cars 2 his engine sounds are a mix of a Gen 5 COT NASCAR and the Chevrolet Corvette C6.R, and in Cars 3 his engine sounds reflect a Gen 6 NASCAR.

A rookie racer in the Piston Cup series, Lightning McQueen secretly despises his sponsor, Rust-eze, hoping to be sponsored by the much more glamorous Dinoco oil company. McQueen is portrayed as ungrateful, obnoxious, selfish, and sarcastic. Heading to California for a tie-breaker race, McQueen begins to realize he has no real friends. After an encounter with a quartet of tuner cars, McQueen is separated from his van Mack and lost in Radiator Springs, a forgotten town on the U.S. Route 66. There he is soon arrested and impounded.
In Radiator Springs, the local judge, Doc Hudson, the other townspeople, and Sally Carrera vote to have McQueen repave the road he destroyed as punishment. He rushes and doesn’t get it right at first before reluctantly accepting help from Doc. In the process, McQueen learns about the history of Radiator Springs and begins to identify with its residents. McQueen befriends a tow truck named Tow Mater and falls in love with Sally. During his time at Radiator Springs, McQueen’s personality slowly begins to change. He begins to care more about others than just himself. He also learns an expert turn from Doc and some unorthodox moves from Mater, which he later uses in the tie-breaker race.
On the last lap of the race, McQueen witnesses a fall behind him and loses the win to help Weathers finish the race. McQueen is nonetheless praised for his unselfish sportsmanship, so much so that Dinoco Race Team owner Tex offers to hire him to replace Weathers. McQueen declines, instead choosing to stay with his Rust-eze sponsors because they managed to get him to where he was. Tex respects his decision and instead offers to do him a favor anytime he needs it. McQueen uses the favor to give Mater a ride in the Dinoco helicopter and fulfills Mater’s dream.
McQueen returns to Radiator Springs to set up his racing headquarters. He resumes his relationship with Sally and becomes Hudson’s student.
Cars: The Video Game (2006)
Considered a direct continuation of the Cars narrative, the story of this game picks up where the film ends. McQueen is about to start the next Piston Cup season. With the help of the citizens of Radiator Springs, McQueen prepares to begin his quest for the Piston Cup. He takes lessons from Doc, Fillmore, Mater. Using his new skills, McQueen finds himself back in position to win the Piston Cup, much to Chick Hicks’ annoyance.
McQueen’s racing gear is stolen from Mack on Interstate 40 when Chick enlists the help of The Delinquent Road Hazards, the same crew who molested Lightning in the first film. McQueen is able to retrieve his gear and bring the offenders to justice before winning the next race, sending Chick into a frenzy. Lightning challenges Chick to a Grand Prix at Radiator Springs followed by another Piston Cup race in L.A. McQueen wins these events and wins the Piston Cup in his second season.
In the end, McQueen, Mater and Sally decide to take a celebratory trip across the country. When asked if he brought his trophy, McQueen notes that he didn’t but left it in a good place, which is in Doc Hudson’s clinic next to the racing legend’s own three Piston Cups.
Although McQueen is still sponsored by Rust-eze, players can unlock McQueen with a Dinoco skin while playing as him in Story Mode, Arcade Mode, and VS. Mode.
Cars 2 (2011)
Five years after the events of the first film, McQueen, now a four-time Piston Cup champion (2007-2011), returns to Radiator Springs after a successful racing season to rest and reconnect with his friends. McQueen’s respite is cut short when he is recruited to compete in the first-ever World Grand Prix sponsored by former oil tycoon Miles Axelrod, who is hoping to promote his new biofuel, allinol. McQueen and his friend Mater get caught up in an international espionage scheme that puts them in danger and tests their friendship.
At a pre-race party in Tokyo, Japan, McQueen is ashamed of Mater and regrets taking him with her. After losing the first race due to Mater’s involvement with the spies, McQueen lashes out at him and tells him he doesn’t want his help anymore. Mater leaves and McQueen feels guilty for being so harsh. McQueen later wins the second race in Porto Corsa, Italy. So far, however, many cars have been badly damaged in the races, leading the public to question whether the new fuel, allinol, is the cause. In response, Axelrod decides to remove Allinol from the final race. McQueen decides to proceed with Allinol and unknowingly puts himself in danger. Mater tries to warn McQueen but fails.
At the third race in London, McQueen sees Mater and wants to apologize to him. As McQueen approaches him, Mater scoots away because of a bomb placed in his engine bay that will detonate if McQueen gets too close. Out of range of the detonator’s remote control, McQueen catches up and realizes the spy mission was real. McQueen accompanies Mater and the spies to confront Miles Axelrod, the mastermind of the murder, and force him to defuse the bomb.
Following the arrest of Axlerod and his cohorts, it was revealed that McQueen’s allinol supply was switched from Sarge to Fillmore’s organic fuel to protect McQueen from the effects of the radiation. McQueen cheerfully explains that from now on Mater can come to any race if he wants. Back in Radiator Springs, McQueen and friends host the Radiator Springs Grand Prix.
McQueen’s color scheme in this film is much the same as in the first film (his large lightning bolt is repainted dark red, and a smaller lightning bolt is threaded through his number and only has three sponsor stickers on either side), although it will be for the World Grand Prix modified with green tinted flames on the end of its large stud and a Piston Cup logo on the hood instead of its usual Rust-Eze sponsor. Its reflective lightning bolt decals have been removed, it has a different spoiler and its decal headlights and taillights have been replaced with real working lights.
Cars 3 (2017)
Six years after the events of the second film, McQueen, now a seven-time Piston Cup winner (2007-2014) and racing legend, is racing in the Piston Cup series with longtime racing buddies Cal Weathers and Bobby Swift. High-tech rookie racer Jackson Storm shows up and wins race after race. McQueen tries too hard while trying to compete with Storm and is badly injured in a dangerous accident. After his recovery, McQueen trains with Cruz Ramirez in the offseason in hopes of beating Storm. McQueen’s new sponsor, Sterling, tells him that if he loses his next race, in which Sterling plans to cash in on McQueen’s retirement items, he will have to give up. After several unsuccessful attempts at training, McQueen decides to seek out Doc’s old pit boss, Smokey, eventually meeting him at Thomasville Motor Speedway in the Great Smoky Mountains. After completing that practice, McQueen leads the first half of the Florida 500 with Smokey as his crew chief before retiring and giving Cruz a shot at glory with him as crew chief. Cruz and McQueen share the win as Lightning starts the race, and the pair earn sponsorship under the merged Dinoco-Rust-Eze brand. McQueen takes on the role of mentoring young talent, with Cruz as his apprentice.
He reverts to the body type he had in the first film, but the paintwork shows a cross between the lightning bolts from the first film and the flames from the second film. The studs are solid instead of halftone, the Rust-Eze logos have been enlarged, and he has fewer sponsor stickers than in the first film. He also has a second livery (featuring a slightly desaturated red livery, a more modern take on the Rust-Eze logo, and different flashes) before his fall, a third “training” livery where he’s darker red with metallic yellow accents, and a fourth “Demolition Derby” livery in which he is all mud brown and bears the number 15. At the end of the film, McQueen wears a blue “Fabulous Lightning McQueen” livery reminiscent of Doc Hudson’s. He also keeps his work lights.
