A great scent is a powerful thing. It can make you feel comfortable on a big day, put you in a good mood, and even make people remember you. Therefore, finding the right one is extremely important.

Thankfully, however, the pressure is off because whether you’re looking for a deliciously scented gift for a loved one or you’re looking for your own signature scent, we’re here to help with our list of the best men’s fragrances out there are available.

How to choose the best fragrances for men

Not sure what you like or don’t know how to put your own preferences into words?

Fragrance families can be a good place to start: Fragrances fall into a floral, fresh, fruity, citrusy, oriental, woody, or spicy category—all pretty simple and meaningful.

But even the highest quality fragrances can suffer a little from poor use. Every sitcom has at least one episode where a young man going out on his first date is punished for wearing too much perfume, so don’t let that be you.

A spritz on dry skin is usually enough for a polite sillage (that’s how long the scent lingers in the air after you). Fragrances are best applied to the warmest parts of the body to help them stand out, so choose a spot from the neck and lower jaw, chest, wrist and forearm, or inner elbow.

If you put it on your wrists, don’t rub them together as this can break the molecular bonds in the perfume and “kill” the note – and nobody wants that.

What is the difference between aftershave, eau de toilette, cologne and perfume? First, let’s clarify the difference between aftershave, eau de toilette and cologne – it’s a common misconception that the terms are interchangeable. It’s all about strength. An aftershave is the weakest and consists of about 1%-3% perfume oil. To soothe your skin after a shave, it usually contains soothing and cooling ingredients like aloe vera. It should only last about two to three hours after application. An eau de toilette (EDT) consists of about 4% to 8% perfume oil. This is too much oil to apply to the face, so it should be applied to the “pulse points” (neck, wrist, or chest). It should last about six to eight hours after application. A cologne contains between 2% and 5% oil and is a good middle ground between aftershave and EDT. Finally, if you are looking for something really powerful, a perfume or perfume contains around 15%-30% oil. This means you only need a tiny amount at the pulse points to last a long time. It’s pretty rare and expensive.

How we test the best men’s fragrances

We’ve all walked into a store at some point in our lives, sprayed a few different colognes on our wrists, immediately sniffed them, and then made a quick decision on which one we like best. This might seem like a good way to test fragrances, but it’s not, and you’ll be glad to know that at T3 we spend a little more time finding the best men’s fragrances and colognes.

We either spray the scent on blotting paper from a distance of about 15 centimeters or test the scent on our own skin. This gives an accurate representation of how the fragrance actually smells.

We pick up the strong top notes that hit immediately. Of course, we will then come back to the fragrance further to test how it evolves over time as the heart and base notes emerge. This is important as this “drying out” will be the scent for most of the day.

It’s important to note that at T3 we don’t test men’s fragrances in a lab – we use them exactly as you would. This allows us to know how they fare in the real world and provide accurate recommendations based on our experience.

Below, I’ve sniffed at some enduring classics—like Calvin Klein’s Eternity, which has been around since 1988—and also some new favorites, like Last Day of Summer by Gucci the Alchemist’s Garden (Gucci’s high-end perfumery line), which smells as good as I can described as a warm summer hug. (The latter eventually became my new spring pick—with Tom Ford’s Oud Wood and Maison Margiela Replica’s Jazz Club runners-up.)

What is the difference between Perfume and Perfume Oils?

We are in the process of launching a new range of perfume oil products but before we do so we thought it might be useful to explain what they are and how they differ from the perfume you may know when you buy it in department stores or supermarkets.

What is a perfume oil?

To understand this better, it is better to say that all perfumes as you know them from department stores are actually perfume oils that have been diluted to be sprayable. The diluent is typically 95 percent denatured (i.e. undrinkable) alcohol. Perfume oils that you buy are also diluted, but with an unscented carrier oil, which can be jojoba oil or fractionated coconut oil.

Differences between perfume and perfume oil

I found an interesting article from about 10 years ago written by an E-Bayer that is still valid today that I would like to share with you.

The history of perfume oils dates back to ancient Egypt when these fine fragrance oils were given as gifts to kings.

As for the UK, according to Wikipedia,

“The use of perfume peaked in England during the reigns of Henry VIII (r. 1509–1547) and Queen Elizabeth I (r. day took great pride in creating delightful scents and they displayed their skill at blending scents.

However, in this day and age, when most people hear the word “perfume,” they think of department store fragrances, which are primarily made up of the concentrated oil-alcohol solution. Nevertheless, perfume oils are enjoying great popularity as more and more people learn about them. Here are some interesting facts about perfume oils:

1) Scent Strength – Perfume oils are highly concentrated and up to ten times more concentrated than department store perfumes. This quality allows oils to last longer than their Eau de Parfum counterparts.

2) Alcohol – Perfumes contain alcohol which creates different olfactory effects. Most body oils use carrier oils like jojoba or fractionated coconut oil instead of alcohol. With some fragrances, the smell can change as the alcohol volatilizes different fragrance notes over time. With oils, the scent is more constant.

3) Price – A noticeable difference between perfumes and perfume oils is the price. Perfumes have very high premiums and large profit margins, which is why many celebrities have embraced the trend of creating their own perfumes and colognes. Depending on the market positioning, perfume oils can be sold very cheaply or even more expensively than perfumes.

4) Body Chemistry – Just because a perfume or cologne smells good on you doesn’t mean the oil version will do. Perfumes only have a small amount of oil and are therefore very different from pure body oils. This interaction between the scent and your body can lead to a completely different scent perception.

5) Packaging – Of course, department store perfumes are packaged very nicely, making them great gifts for friends and family. Many perfume oils are sold in less than attractive containers, which is one reason for their lower price.

6) Uses – Perfumes are intended for body use only, but perfume oils can be used to make a variety of scented products, such as soap, candles, bath oils, air fresheners and many other types of scented products. Note that there are different types of fragrance oils and that pure, uncut oils are not safe for use on the skin.

Here are a few more differences I would add to the article :-

7) Perfume oils are non-flammable and can be shipped without special precautions. Perfumes are highly flammable and are a restricted item in the UK, meaning every item sent must have a declaration on the outer envelope or packaging along with a warning.

8) Perfume oils last longer than perfumes because they do not evaporate (the alcohol in perfumes evaporates).

9) Perfume oils are far less likely to trigger allergic reactions than perfume, which is highly likely due to the very high alcohol content.

When you look at these differences, you have to stop and ask yourself, why the heck do people buy perfumes instead of perfume oils? Personally, I think a lot of it is the ongoing marketing and hype in magazines, TV ads, celebrities, etc. sending buying signals to your brain. If perfume oils were disguised like this, maybe more people would buy them, even though they were more expensive because of the packaging.
