Trader Joe’s Strawberry Mochi Review – Freezer Meal Frenzy

The Trader Joe’s Freezer is a constant source of joy for us. Whether we’re in the mood for burgers, fried rice, or seasonal delights, we almost always find something new and exciting to satisfy our appetite.

But don’t forget the dessert options. Trader Joe’s frozen dessert selection is huge and filled with great options that will satisfy a sweet tooth. One of those options is Trader Joe’s Strawberry Mochi, which we’re reviewing today. We’ve already checked out the Coffee Mochi and the Mango Mini Mochi, so we’re curious to see how the strawberry version compares to its cold sweet brethren.

This dessert comes in a box of six, and there’s an egg-carton-like plastic container that keeps them all separate. This container didn’t stop some of our mochi balls from freezing together, we should point out.

If you’ve never eaten mochi before, the texture might seem a bit strange to you. The outside is made from a rubbery rice-based batter, meaning it’s not really cold to the touch. You’ll be surprised when you put this in your mouth at how not cold it is (considering it’s filled with ice cream).

Since the husk is made of rice, it also has an odd consistency that breaks up in the mouth (whereas a gummy tends to stay in one piece even when it breaks down). This also makes mochi a bit strange for some people.

But whether you like the texture or not (our reviewers disagree on that), the flavor here is delicious. The outer shell has a super sweet strawberry gummy flavor while the inside is delicious strawberry ice cream. The strawberry flavor is really intense in the gummy shell but quite muted in the actual ice cream, although they mix really well together.

A mochi ball gets you 80 calories, which is really not bad for a frozen dessert. However, you might be tempted to grab seconds or thirds, so be careful and try to exercise some restraint. (Or not; we’re not your parents!)

Trader Joe’s Strawberry Mochi is a delicious fruit-infused treat that you can enjoy as a sweet snack or dessert. While some cringe at the odd texture of rice dough, there’s plenty here for folks who don’t mind to enjoy.

Trader Joe’s Strawberry Mochi Ice Cream

In previous blog posts, I’ve said I want more mochi flavors. But do I really need more flavors? Not really… I agree with the current selection. Green tea is best. Then vanilla or the chocolate peanut butter for company. Trader Joe’s could honestly come out with 10 more flavors that I’d love to try. It’s just that I know that even if there were 21 other flavors, I’ll keep repurchasing the same flavors.

it’s pink Pink foods are great. Valentine’s Day is coming. Forget the overly commercialized heart foods – strawberry mochi would suffice in my opinion.

Defrosting the mochi ice cream for a few minutes before eating is key for the best texture. I’m not a huge ice cream fan, but mochi ice cream is easy to eat. They are neatly packaged and portioned. Not a healthy food but the ingredients are pretty decent. My box had some packaging issues – I don’t think the plastic packaging is airtight which is why the condensation froze into small pieces of ice. 1) The rice dough is the same as always – perfect chewiness, not too thick, not too thin. Just the perfect packaging for ice cream.2) Strawberry ice cream isn’t my favorite flavor, but I enjoy it from time to time. Was that the best strawberry ice cream ever? No not at all. I like strawberry ice cream that tastes like fresh strawberries and it wasn’t. Just a regular, generic strawberry flavored ice cream vs the freshest, best strawberry ice cream you’ve ever had. 3) So I don’t enjoy it enough to buy it again. But it is okay. It is what it is. I’m not particularly keen on this, but if you like a regular strawberry ice cream and find it more appealing than green tea or vanilla, this would be a good choice. 4) As always, $4.49 for a box of 6 mochi ice creams.

Trader Joe’s Mochi, Strawberry Ice Cream

A chewy ball of dough with ice cream inside? Yes, please. Trader Joe’s mochi ice cream is incredibly good and significantly cheaper than those sold at most grocery stores. But these little doughy rice balls with rich strawberry ice cream inside have pretty simple ingredients and always hit the spot. Mochi ice cream has only recently become a phenomenon in the US, and they can now be found in many places. But TJ’s was one of the first grocery stores to stock these little indulgence pillows. They now come in a few different flavors like green tea, Thai tea, and chocolate peanut butter, but this strawberry mochi is my favorite. Trader Joe’s mango mochi and vanilla mochi are really good too……

I usually reach for these in my freezer when I want something sweet but also carb. So something super healthy obviously. The only problem I have with this is that I always eat the batter and ice cream super fast which can lead to a crazy cold freeze in my throat which is really painful! Has this happened to anyone else? I think that’s because the rice dough around the ice blocks the cold until it’s partly down your throat and then the freezing cold hits you! Aside from that little quirk (eat these with care), Trader Joe’s mochi ice cream is absolutely delicious. If I had to rank the flavors, I would probably put mango and strawberry in the top two spots, while the other flavors are a distant second. If you love chocolate and peanut butter, these are pretty tasty. And if you can’t make it to TJs, try these…
