Spotlight Poetry – Today is Very Boring – A poem by Jack Prelutsky
Today is Very Boring by Jack Prelutsky
Today is very boring.
It’s a very boring day
there is nothing too much to see
There is not much to say,
There’s a peacock on my sneakers
There’s a penguin on my head
There’s a dormouse on my doorstep,
I’m going back to bed.
Today is very boring
it’s boring through and through
there is absolutely nothing
that i think i want to do
I see giants riding rhinos
and an ogre with a sword,
There’s a dragon blowing smoke rings
I’m positively bored.
Today is very boring
I can hardly help but yawn
There is a flying saucer that lands
in the middle of my lawn
A volcano just erupted
less than half a mile away,
and i think i felt an earthquake
It’s a very boring day.

World Poetry Day with Jack Prelutsky and Lewis Carroll
by Amy in general Tags: Jack Prelutsky, Lewis Carroll, Neil Gaiman, Poetry, World Poetry Day
Today is World Poetry Day and I didn’t want to post anything, but I was inspired by Allvce over at What I Like…& Why You Should Too, who posted her favorite Emily Dickinson poem on her Facebook page, so I chose two of mine to share favorite poems with you. I don’t read a lot of poetry so I’m sure there are far greater poems out there but these are the ones I love.
The first is Today is Very Boring by Jack Prelutsky. I first heard this poem in a 1997 episode of Arthur. In the episode titled “I’m A Poet,” Fern challenges everyone to enter a poetry contest judged by poet Jack Prelutsky, and everyone who does not win must join the Poetry Club for a full year. I hadn’t heard of Jack Prelutsky when I was 9, I couldn’t pronounce Jack Prelutsky when I was 9, but I loved his poem. I can’t find the whole episode but here is the clip of him reading the poem about Arthur. Arthur often has famous people on the show, Neil Gaiman was there (who could forget the great phrase “Neil Gaiman, what are you making in my falafel), as was Art Garfunkel and many others (check out the buzzfeed list), but I always remembered this poem by Prelutsky, although I haven’t looked up any of his work since, that may need to change.

My favorite favorite poem is Lewis Carroll’s The Walrus and the Carpenter. I mentioned in my Through the Looking Glass review that I fell in love with the movie Harriet the Spy as a kid and grew to love it more and more.
the sun shone on the sea,
Shining with all power:
He did his best to make
The waves smooth and bright –
And that was strange because it was like that
Middle of the night.
The moon shone sullen
Because she thought the sun
Had no business
After the day was over –
“That’s very rude of him,” she said.
“To come and spoil the fun!”
The sea was wet as wet could be
The sand was dry as dry.
You couldn’t see a cloud because
There was not a cloud in the sky:
No birds flew overhead –
There were no birds to fly.
The Walrus and the Carpenter
We walked close;
They cried like nothing to see
Such amounts of sand:
“If only that were cleared away”
They said, “That would be great!”
“If seven maids with seven pugs
Swept it for half a year.
Do you think,” said the walrus,
“That they could get it straight?”
“I doubt it,” said the carpenter,
And shed a bitter tear.
“O oysters, come and go with us!”
The walrus pleaded.
“A pleasant walk, a pleasant conversation,
Along the salt beach:
We can’t get by with more than four
Give everyone a hand.”
The oldest oyster looked at him
But he never said a word:
The oldest oyster blinked his eyes,
And shook his heavy head –
That means he didn’t vote
Leave the oyster bed.
But four young oysters rushed
All greedy for the treat:
Their coats were brushed, their faces washed,
Her shoes were clean and tidy—
And that was weird because you know
They had no feet.
Four more oysters followed them,
And four more;
And thick and fast they came at last,
And more and more and more –
All hop through the foaming waves
And crawl to the shore.
The Walrus and the Carpenter
Walked a mile or so
And then they rested on a rock
Pleasantly low:
And all the little oysters stood
And waited in line.
“The time has come,” said the walrus,
“To speak of many things:
Of shoes – and ships – and sealing wax –
Of cabbage – and kings –
And why the sea is boiling hot –
And whether pigs have wings.”
“But wait a little longer,” cried the oysters,
“Before we have our conversation;
‘Cause some of us are out of breath
And we are all fat!”
“No rush!” said the carpenter.
For that they thanked him very much.
“A loaf of bread,” said the walrus,
“What we need most of all:
Pepper and vinegar next to it
Are very good indeed –
Well, if you’re ready, dear oysters,
We can start feeding.”
“But not on us!” cried the oysters,
Turns a little blue.
“That would be after so much kindness
A somber thing!”
“The night is beautiful,” said the walrus.
“Are you admiring the view?
“It was so nice of you to come!
And you are very nice!”
The carpenter said nothing but
“Cut us another slice:
I wish you weren’t so deaf –
I had to ask you twice!”
“It seems a shame,” said the walrus,
“To play such a trick on them,
After we got them out this far
And let them trot so fast!”
The carpenter said nothing but
“The butter spread is too thick!”
“I cry for you,” said the walrus:
“I deeply sympathize.”
With sobs and tears he sorted out
The biggest,
Holding his handkerchief
In front of his teary eyes.
“O oysters,” said the carpenter,
“You had a nice run!
Shall we trot home again?’
But there was no answer –
And that was hardly strange, because
They ate everyone.
