Towing A Car Without Wheels? Quick Answer

QUESTION: You’re pretty good at fixing car problems, but I want to find out how good you really are. Would it harm a car engine to pull the car forward while the manual transmission was in reverse? I know the answer, but unless you want to intentionally embarrass one of your readers, don’t ask how I know.

In hindsight, I’m not really surprised at the aftermath, but I’m surprised it happened after only half a mile and at low speed. Although I’m hard of hearing, I could tell the small car (a Geo Metro being towed behind a 34-foot RV) protested mightily. Can you explain to me exactly what I did?

Ray: You screwed up a lot, Robert. When you drive a car, the engine spins and that makes the wheels move. But when you tow a car in gear, the opposite happens. The wheels make the engine turn.

Ray: Motors are not designed to spin backwards. When they do this it often happens that a loose timing belt will skip a few teeth and the valves will open and close at the wrong times. When the pistons fly up, they hit the valves directly. The result is not pretty.

Tom: You probably did, Robert. Luckily it was only a Geo Metro, so they only crushed the valves on three cylinders. Had this been a real car you would have had four or more cylinders and it would cost you even more to repair!

Tom: You can go wherever you want, Elizabeth. Some unscrupulous dealers will tell you that you have to come to them for service and maintenance or you will void the manufacturer’s warranty. But these are, as we say in the industry, complete bull feathers.

Ray: They can also tell you that you have to use “genuine GM oil filters” for example to keep the warranty in effect. That’s a bunch of crap too. There are many, many filters (manufactured by companies like Fram, Purolator and others) that meet all manufacturers specifications and are perfectly acceptable for routine maintenance. The same goes for most liquids, filters and many other things.

Tom: But that’s not true for most mechanical parts. So if you need a new water pump or alternator, for example, then you should go to the dealer. Not only will you be assured that you are not voiding the warranty, these parts are likely covered under warranty so you can have them replaced free of charge.

Ray: So you can go anywhere you want for regular maintenance. Just keep copies of your receipts in case you need to make a warranty claim later. It doesn’t matter if these receipts are from your GM dealership or from Fred’s Auto Repair and Dancing School. You are still insured.

Example: A store parking lot states that parking is for customers only. If you park there, you can only be towed after an hour.

The California Vehicle Code towing regulations include four distinct situations that are governed by law when vehicles may be towed from private property. First if there are signs prohibiting public parking. This is by far the most common scenario covering shops, restaurants, homes and the like. Otherwise, if a vehicle is inoperable, has received a parking order, or is in someone’s home, it may also be towed.

These situations are governed by vehicle code 22658. These are California towing company laws. 22658 is the primary California car towing statue. If another law allows a vehicle to be towed, that law provides additional grounds for towing.

Signs prohibiting public parking

What notice must be provided before you are allowed to tow a car off private property?

If there are signs on private property prohibiting public parking, an unauthorized vehicle may be towed. Here are the signage requirements:

– Signs must be posted at all entrances to the property.

– Signs must be clearly visible.

– Signs must be at least 17″ by 22″.

– Signs must be at least 2.5 cm high and contain the following: * Public parking is prohibited

* Vehicles will be towed at the owner’s expense

* Local law enforcement phone number

If signage is improper, the property owner or an HOA will be liable for double the towing and storage fees.

Advice on parking violations

If a vehicle receives a parking violation and 96 hours (4 days) have elapsed, the vehicle may be towed.

What to do if your vehicle is towed in California:

When you collect your car or truck, you must be given a copy of the written authorization given by the tow truck to tow your vehicle prior to payment.

California car towing laws require the towing company to provide you with a notice stating, “If you believe you have been improperly towed, please contact the local law enforcement agency or district attorney’s office at [applicable phone number insert].” The notice must be in English and in the language most commonly spoken in the region.

If you can’t pay the towing and storage fees, you’re still entitled to get all your personal belongings out of the car for free.

California vehicle towing law distinguishes between personal property and the vehicle. The towing company can detain the car pending payment of the towing and storage fees, but cannot detain your personal belongings from the car.

How long should my tow rope be?

There is no legal minimum length, but common sense dictates leaving enough space between the two cars to allow the rear end enough time to react to braking and cornering.

However, there is a maximum length of 4.5 meters, and if you use a rope longer than 1.5 meters, the law requires you to attach a fluttering piece of colored fabric in the middle so other riders can see the rope. Avoid dramatic maneuvers, sudden braking or acceleration – remember, if the car being towed doesn’t have the engine running, it won’t have power steering or brakes either. Which could result in two dead cars instead of one.

Towing a car: How should the car to be towed be driven?

Even more careful than the tow truck – this is probably the tougher end of the mission. First of all, the car being towed may not have engine power, which means that power brakes and steering require much more physical effort to work. Remember to make sure the car is idling too.

Keep an eye out for brake lights and turn signals on the tow truck and be ready to coordinate your steering and braking actions.
