Ladies and gentlemen, girls and boys, and dudes of all teenages (as well as the, uh, gals). I present to you: the TRUE and HONEST Sonichu, collecting issues #0 – #10, plus the four specials.
The CBRs contained in this collection were originally made by a user from Kiwi Farms named Boxxychu, with the goal of being as close to the original releases as possible. While they did contain an error or two (which I corrected myself), they’re still the best and most complete versions of Sonichu I could find. Many thanks to them for making it!

Sonic and Elise had landed on the waterfront of what looked like a tropical village, with the sun blazing high in a cloudless sky. Sonic glanced about for any other signs of trouble, but soon was certain they were clear. “Hold on tight!” he said. “This may get a little rough.” “OK,” Elise replied, adjusting her grip slightly. He then slid under a swinging axe, thereby avoiding injury and then boosting through a box (although he was rather surprised that he was surrounded by a red shield as he did so). He used a homing attack to dispatch a robot, and then continued along the boardwalk dodging evironmental hazards until he was thrown from a spring and onto the next part of the area. TITLE: Sub-episode 4: Christian Chandler in McAttack Drawn June 20, 2005 CHRISTIAN WESTON CHANDLER: Well, it’s been over one-year and ten-months now since I started my Love Quest… I still haven’t found an 18-23-year old white girl to build a relationship from the ground-up with. I detest the men, except for my father and me, because they take all the pretty girls, leaving me with none to choose from. This sucks; I’m very lonesome, and there are prople around here who do what they can to keep me from getting one… I feel the world is against me finding a girlfriend of my own. Sonichu #3 is the last issue to follow the format of a multi-chapter Sonichu storyline followed by a “sub-episode” dramatizing the author’s real-life struggles to find love. During the production of this issue (June 2005-February 2006), Mr. Chandler produced no less than five sub-episodes; this is the first of them. The rest would be presented all at once in Sonichu #4.
This story was commenced on June 20, 2005, on the same day as some of the events which inspired it. As with Sub-episodes 1 and 2, Chris begins by declaring the approximate number of years and months he has pursued his “Love Quest,” wherein he sought female companionship by loitering in public places with a sign inviting women to speak to him.
The title “McAttack” is the first hint this story gives that it takes place in the dining room of a McDonald’s restaurant. (The “M” in the title is drawn to resemble four french fries.) Curiously, McDonald’s is never directly identified as such in the story, even though the author has rarely shied away from using the names of real people he includes in the series.
The opening narration provides the most comprehensive description in the series of what kind of woman the author is searching for:
“18-23-year old” – The maximum age is 23 because Mr. Chandler was 23 when he wrote the story; the minimum is 18 solely because he knows he cannot marry or bed a minor.
“Boyfriend-free” – Chris is so terrified that any woman he meets will tell him she already has a boyfriend that he insists that he will only date single women that are single.
“Caring” – This is often included in lists like this one, as if it must be stated up-front that he has no interest in a frigid, amoral soulmate.
“Smoke-free, non-alcoholic” – Chris has railed against the even the slightest use of tobacco and alcohol for most of his life (although he relented on alcohol in 2009). It is not uncommon to consider these qualities in a romantic prospect, but it is rather odd to raise these points as frequently and as prominently as Chris does.
“White” – Chris has demonstrated enough racist tendencies to fill this article. In this case, however, he has argued that the only reason his lover must be white is that his daughter, foretold in a childhood dream, must also be white.
“Girl” – Chris is both heterosexual and extremely homophobic, so this part is obvious. In this context he rarely uses the term “woman,” perhaps to avoid making his future mate–and thereby himself–seem older.
“To build a relationship form the ground-up with” – This is a typical CWC-ism to add a redundant qualification; it should be self-evident that he wants to meet a girl to start a relationship.
Although the author has apparently always had difficulty coexisting with other males, this story is from a period in which that antagonism was at its peak. As he explains here, he has no regard for any males other than himself and his father. (At times other exceptions have been mentioned, but these are generally people he respects in theory but has never met, such as the President of the United States.) This attitude would subside in 2006, as Chris’s relationship with Megan Schroeder gave him a tangible goal to pursue, reducing the time spent dwelling on his scapegoats.
Chris’s misandry is ostensibly fueled by jealousy or men who have mates and terror of men who might seek to mate with him. However, I submit that the deeper issue is that the people who have given grief throughout his life have been predominantly male, from the schoolyard kids who teased him, to authorities that tried to have institutionalized, to the security details that have enforced bans on his Love Quest. No doubt girls and women have been involved in these incidents as well (most notably Mary Lee Walsh), but Mr. Chandler surely sees that it would be self-defeating to reject the entire female population and risk alienating his future wife. The net effect is that the author idealizes women as a whole to curry their collective favor, while the male population can offer nothing he wants and is summarily damned.
The convention that Chris recalls attending is the 2005 Anime Mid-Atlantic show in Richmond, which would have ended the day before this page was drawn. Because of various photos he took to remember his trip, we know that he attended the convention (as well as the previous edition in 2004). In 2010 the website Topless Robot published an email from someone who hosted a panel at the show, recalling the bizarre man he encountered that he now knows was Mr. Chandler.
We can reasonably assume that if the fictional Chris obtained hair clips in the shape of cartoon wings at the convention, then the real Chris must have done so as well, or he would not raise the point. Why he believes he “earned” them is unclear–perhaps he won them in a contest or a random drawing. The wings are obviously intended for women, or at the very least men with long hair; Chris’s insistence upon wearing them seems to foreshadow his future interest in cross-dressing. However, in this story he seems unaware of the implications about his gender role. It may be that he innocently liked to pretend the wings gave him some sort of enhanced abilities (i.e., “the level-up”), a fantasy that this story will expand upon.
Chris is, as ever, occupying his Love Quest time by listening to music on his Nintendo DS and writing/drawing on a sheet of paper. He does not appear to be eating or drinking anything, which would suggest that he has no further business at McDonald’s.
