All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go
The lookout is nice, but is so high up you can’t really see anything in detail. However, there is a hike that takes you to the actual beach by Bird Island. That is a great hike, and the snorkelling there is terrific – on a calm day. We loved it so much on our first visit, we went back again at the end of our stay. Unfortunately, the waves were big, and the snorkelling was cloudy and difficult to fight the current. On the good day, we saw a huge variety of sea life including a smaller black tip shark (these are safe and non aggressive).

About this project:
The Bird Island lookout is one of Saipan’s most famous tourist attractions. As the vision for a world-class destination stands, the transformation of the Bird Island lookout has received the following upgrades: 1) replacement or the trash bins, 2) removal of the cigarette receptacles (this is a smoke-free zone), and 3) installation of lookout and trail signs. The remaining transformations will be made soon and include the following: 1) repairing the railings, 2) reconstruction of the stairway, 3) removal of items/objects that obstruct the panoramic view, 4) painting in the parking lot, and 4) implementation of the landscape design.
About this site:
Situated in a picturesque bay in Saipan’s rugged northeastern coast, the tiny, rugged island is separated from Saipan by a fringing reef, a narrow stretch of shallow lagoon and a lovely white sand beach. During the Japanese administration, the island was known as tsukimi or “moon viewing island.” So named for the hundreds of birds that nest there, Bird Island is a must-see attraction in Saipan. One of the marine sanctuaries where fishing is strictly prohibited, it is also one of the three areas on Saipan with volcanic deposits. (Courtesy of the Marianas Visitors Authority)

Bird Island Trail
The trail starts at the Reserve’s southernmost parking area. Round trip: 0.8 mile. Habitats: pine forest, coastal scrub, rocky shores. Provides access via staircase to sandy Gibson Beach and views of Bird Island and China Cove. Other than Gibson Beach, the trail is fully accessible.
On the way to the Bird Island overlook, you pass between Monterey pine woods and the sea. There are lovely views of two white sandy beaches: the small one in China Cove, and the longer Gibson Beach. Gibson Beach is accessible via a staircase. China Cove, with its sparkling jade-green waters, is one of the Reserve’s most stunning sights. In spring this spot becomes home to harbor seals, nursing their newborn pups; for their protection. Watch from the trail above – and don’t forget your binoculars (also available on loan from the information station at the Sea Lion Point parking area).
The sea pounds against these cliffs much of the year, enlarging the natural cracks and faults in the granite, and in time creates caves that slowly become arches. Look for the rock forms created by this coastal erosion as you head out to the Bird Island overlook. The arches eventually collapse, forming isolated outcrops such as Bird Island.
Walk between displays of brilliant wildflowers out to Pelican Point. Here you can get a close look at Bird Island, which becomes a large sea bird colony in spring and summer. Hundreds of Brandt’s cormorants nest close together. You will also see Western gull chicks, and, if you’re lucky, nesting Black-crowned night herons. In the waters below, a great blue heron might be standing on a piece of driftwood, watching patiently for prey. Scan for sea otters diving to feed or resting in the kelp, and for harbor seals hauled out on low-lying rocks.
