Canon 7D vs Canon 550D Detailed Comparison
Here we are comparing 7D and 550D, two DSLR cameras by Canon. Canon EOS 7D is a Advanced DSLR class camera and Canon EOS 550D is a Entry-Level DSLR class camera.
Canon 7D was introduced to market in November 2009 and Canon 550D was launched in April 2010. There is only 5 months difference between 7D and 550D so we are expecting this to be a fair comparison regarding age and technology level.
Here is a brief look at the main features of Canon 7D and Canon 550D before getting into our more detailed comparison.
Canon EOS 550D vs Canon EOS 7D: What is the difference?
1. weather-sealed (splashproof) ✖ Canon EOS 550D ✔ Canon EOS 7D The device is protected with extra seals to prevent failures caused by dust, raindrops, and water splashes.
2. screen resolution 1040k dots 920k dots A higher screen resolution provides a sharper image, making it easier to review your photos.
3. EVF resolution Unknown. Help us by suggesting a value. (Canon EOS 550D) Unknown. Help us by suggesting a value. (Canon EOS 7D) An electronic viewfinder (EVF) with a higher resolution provides a sharper image, producing a view comparable in quality with the one displayed on an optical viewfinder.
4. Has a built-in focus motor ✖ Canon EOS 550D ✖ Canon EOS 7D The focus motor moves the lens in order to autofocus. For system cameras, having a focus motor in the camera’s body allows you to use a wide range of lenses, including lenses which do not have their own focus motor. For compact cameras, a focus motor is usually built-in.
5. Has a flip-out screen ✖ Canon EOS 550D ✖ Canon EOS 7D Flip-out screens can be useful for tricky shots.
6. has an optical viewfinder ✔ Canon EOS 550D ✔ Canon EOS 7D An optical viewfinder (or OVF) allows the photographer to compose a shot while seeing exactly what the lens will capture. OVFs have no time lag and require no power – as opposed to electronic viewfinders, which can drain battery life. OVFs are also better in low light situations.
7. Has an electronic viewfinder (EVF) ✖ Canon EOS 550D ✖ Canon EOS 7D An electronic viewfinder (or EVF) is a small display which shows the framed image. Benefits of these over optical viewfinders include: they show more of the image; they can be more compact; it’s easier to focus with digital zoom; and they sometimes offer extra info on the display (such as a live histogram).
8. viewfinder coverage 95% 100% With 100% coverage, you can compose the image correctly when you capture the photo. With less than full coverage, you may have to crop your photos afterward to get them looking perfect.

Canon 550D vs 7D
The Canon EOS 550D (called Canon T2i in some regions) and the Canon EOS 7D are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in February 2010 and September 2009. Both are DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras that are equipped with an APS-C sensor. Both cameras offer a resolution of 17.9 megapixels.
Below is an overview of the main specs of the two cameras as a starting point for the comparison.
Headline Specifications Canon 550D Canon 7D Digital single lens reflex Digital single lens reflex Canon EF mount lenses Canon EF mount lenses 17.9 MP – APS-C sensor 17.9 MP – APS-C sensor 1080/30p Video 1080/30p Video ISO 100-6,400 (100 – 12,800) ISO 100-6,400 (100 – 12,800) Optical viewfinder Optical viewfinder 3.0″ LCD – 1040k dots 3.0″ LCD – 920k dots Fixed screen (not touch-sensitive) Fixed screen (not touch-sensitive) 3.7 shutter flaps per second 8 shutter flaps per second not weather sealed Weathersealed body 440 shots per battery charge 800 shots per battery charge 129 x 98 x 62 mm, 530 g 148 x 111 x 74 mm, 860 g
Going beyond this snapshot of core features and characteristics, what are the differences between the Canon EOS 550D and the Canon EOS 7D? Which one should you buy? Read on to find out how these two cameras compare with respect to their body size, their imaging sensors, their shooting features, their input-output connections, and their reception by expert reviewers.
Body comparison
An illustration of the physical size and weight of the Canon 550D and the Canon 7D is provided in the side-by-side display below. The two cameras are presented according to their relative size. Three consecutive perspectives from the front, the top, and the back are available. All size dimensions are rounded to the nearest millimeter.
If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon 7D is notably larger (30 percent) than the Canon 550D. Moreover, the 7D is substantially heavier (62 percent) than the 550D. It is noteworthy in this context that the 7D is splash and dust-proof, while the 550D does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. In this particular case, both cameras feature the same lens mount, so that they can use the same lenses. You can compare the optics available in the Canon EF Lens Catalog.
Concerning battery life, the 550D gets 440 shots out of its LP-E8 battery, while the 7D can take 800 images on a single charge of its LP-E6 power pack.
The adjacent table lists the principal physical characteristics of the two cameras alongside a wider set of alternatives. If you would like to visualize and compare a different camera combination, you can navigate to the CAM-parator app and make your selection from a broad list of cameras there.
Any camera decision will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The 550D was launched at a markedly lower price (by 59 percent) than the 7D, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
Sensor comparison
The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor and have a format factor (sometimes also referred to as “crop factor”) of 1.6. Within the spectrum of camera sensors, this places the review cameras among the medium-sized sensor cameras that aim to strike a balance between image quality and portability. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.
The two cameras under review do not only share the same sensor size, but also offer an identical resolution of 17.9 megapixels. This similarity in sensor specs implies that both the 550D and the 7D have the same pixel density, as well as the same pixel size. It should, however, be noted that the 550D is a somewhat more recent model (by 5 months) than the 7D, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time.
The Canon EOS 550D has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 6400, which can be extended to ISO 100-12800. The Canon EOS 7D offers exactly the same ISO settings.
Technology-wise, both cameras are equipped with CMOS (Complementary Metal–Oxide–Semiconductor) sensors. Both cameras use a Bayer filter for capturing RGB colors on a square grid of photosensors. This arrangement is found in most digital cameras.
For many cameras, data on sensor performance has been reported by DXO Mark. This service assesses and scores the color depth (“DXO Portrait”), dynamic range (“DXO Landscape”), and low-light sensitivity (“DXO Sports”) of camera sensors, and also publishes an overall camera score. The Overall DXO ratings for the two cameras under consideration are close, suggesting that they provide similar imaging performance. The adjacent table reports on the physical sensor characteristics and the outcomes of the DXO sensor quality tests for a sample of comparator-cameras.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, and both provide the same movie specifications (1080/30p).
Feature comparison
Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. The 550D and the 7D are similar in the sense that both have an optical viewfinder. The latter is useful for getting a clear image for framing even in brightly lit environments. The viewfinder in the 7D offers a wider field of view (100%) than the one in the 550D (95%), so that a larger proportion of the captured image is visible in the finder. In addition, the viewfinder of the 7D has a higher magnification (0.63x vs 0.54x), so that the size of the image transmitted appears closer to the size seen with the naked human eye. The adjacent table lists some of the other core features of the Canon 550D and Canon 7D along with similar information for a selection of comparators.

One feature that is present on the 7D, but is missing on the 550D is a top-level LCD. While being, of course, smaller than the rear screen, the control panel conveys some of the essential shooting information and can be convenient for quick and easy settings verification.
The 550D writes its imaging data to SDXC cards, while the 7D uses Compact Flash cards.

If the count of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a measure, the 7D is the clear winner of the contest (9 : 5 points). However, the relevance of individual strengths will vary across photographers, so that you might want to apply your own weighing scheme to the summary points when reflecting and deciding on a new camera. A professional wildlife photographer will view the differences between cameras in a way that diverges from the perspective of a family photog, and a person interested in architecture has distinct needs from a sports shooter. Hence, the decision which camera is best and worth buying is often a very personal one.

How about other alternatives? Do the specifications of the Canon 550D and the Canon 7D place the cameras among the top in their class? Find out in the latest Best DSLR Camera listing whether the two cameras rank among the cream of the crop.
In any case, while the comparison of technical specifications can provide a useful overview of the capabilities of different cameras, it remains incomplete and does no justice, for example, to the way the 550D or the 7D perform in practice. User reviews that are available, for instance, at amazon can sometimes shed light on these issues, but such feedback is all too often partial, inconsistent, and inaccurate.
Expert reviews
This is why expert reviews are important. The adjacent summary-table relays the overall verdicts of several of the most popular camera review sites (amateurphotographer [AP], cameralabs [CL], digitalcameraworld [DCW], dpreview [DPR], ephotozine [EPZ], photographyblog [PB]). As can be seen, the professional reviewers agree in many cases on the quality of different cameras, but sometimes their assessments diverge, reinforcing the earlier point that a camera decision is often a very personal choice.
The above review scores should be interpreted with care, though. The ratings are only valid when referring to cameras in the same category and of the same age. Hence, a score should always be seen in the context of the camera’s market launch date and its price, and rating-comparisons among cameras that span long time periods or concern very differently equipped models make little sense. It should also be noted that some of the review sites have over time altered the way they render their verdicts.
