Founded in 1141 and its land never been parcelled out for almost 10 centuries. The walled vineyard of Clos de Tart is a 7.5 hectare site and one of the seven Monopole Grand Crus in Burgundy, sitting between Bonnes Mares and Clos des Lambrays. Vines cultivated on near organic principles and are mostly more than 50 years old where the oldest could be more than 100 years old. The word ‘Monopole’ simply means the whoe vinyard is own by a single owner which is one of the few Grand Cru Monopole in Burgundy, yet the better known is Romanee Conti.
Bright ruby-red. Reticent notes offers currant, licorice and spicy new oak. Sweet, supple, broad and lush but not yet complex. Initially seemed less minerally and delineated than the 2007, but aeration brought lovely cut and energy. The flavors of bitter cherry, dark chocolate, minerals and fresh blood are supported by firm underlying structure.

Clos de Tart Grand Cru – Monopole 2007 – Wine

Tasting note Intense aromas of graphite and mineral make an immediate impact, with black cherry, black currant and spice flavors adding depth and dimension. This has concentration and juicy texture, pushing the long, peppery aftertaste. Shows fine harmony and expression overall. Best from 2012 through 2024. 94/100 (Bruce Sanderson – Wine Spectator Insider – 04 août 2010). Cropped at 27hl/ha, this has a very intriguing nose; much “controlled” than anticipated; not light, but very refined with great delineation, brambly red fruits, a hint of wild strawberry complemented by smoke/woodland. It is almost the antithesis of the 2003. The palate is medium-bodied, beautifully balanced, very feminine with wonderfully integrated new oak. I love the poise of this wine, wonderfully retrained, a paradigm of a “less is more” Pinot Noir. Wonderful structure on the finish that suggests this will be one of the longer lived wines of the vintage. Drink 2012-2020. 93/100. Tasted March 2009. (Neil Martin’s Wine Journal) Informations The most important feature of year 2007 is earliness. The full flowering of the grapes occurred on May 23rd about 3 weeks ahead thanks to an early spring season and an exceptionally warm April month as it totalled 20 days with temperatures reaching over 20°C (68°F) including 7 days at over 28°C (84°F) and only 1.2 mm rainfall. This unusually early flowering in Burgundy led most of the winegrowers to start harvesting in August. The Clos de Tart, always in favour of picking fully ripe grapes started harvesting on September 6th which was quite later than most of the other Domains of the Côte de Nuits. Nevertheless this harvesting campaign was still three weeks ahead of the average picking date. Other harvests have started quite early in the past : 2003 harvesting date : September 2nd 2000 harvesting date : September 18th 1989 harvesting date : September 18th 1976 harvesting date : September 16th 1937 harvesting date : September 16th Despite a gloomy summer season, the earliness of the growth cycle combined with a stringent annual work on the vines (de-budding, thinning and green harvest), the return of sunshine and dry weather from August 20th on, all these factors enabled us, after a drastic sorting out, to vat very ripe and healthy grapes. Here are some of the main technical features of the 2007 Clos de Tart : Flowering : May 6th Véraison : mid-July (grapes turning to purple) Beginning of harvesting : September 6th Yield : 27 hl/ha = 1.40 tons/acre End of malo-lactic fermentation: July 4th 2008 Average natural alcohol content : 13°66 Average Ph : 3.62 Ageing : 18 months in new oak The bottling is planned for the beginning of April in our premises. As usual, this will be done without any fining or filtration, only by gravity and manually, bottle after bottle. We will put on the market 18,300 bottles of Clos de Tart Grand Cru and 4,500 bottles of La Forge de Tart Premier Cru, the Clos de Tart second wine. Here are the first tasting notes concerning the 2007 Clos de Tart tasted from the cask before bottling : “An expressive nose of floral notes, wood toasts, spice hints and ripe black Pinot and plum intermingle with rich, delicious and impressively concentrated big bodied flavours that possess really lovely acid/fruit/tannin balance, all wrapped in a complex, serious and palate staining finish. The subtle influence of the stem tannins gives the very rich, indeed almost lush finish an appealing sense of lift at this early stage. This displays excellent potential to develop over the next 10 to 15 years and it should last 30” (Allen Meadows, Burghound.com, January 2009) “Good deep ruby-red. Knockout nose offers black cherry, dark raspberry, minerals, mocha, licorice and soil tones. Dense but juicy and sappy, with insidious sweetness to the dark berry and mineral flavors. Finishes very long, vibrant and precise, with intriguing saline, mineral, licorice and torrefaction nuances. This one really excites the taste buds”. (Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar, March-April 2009) As far as we are concerned, we think that 2007 Clos de Tart with its floral aromas of violet and rose reveals itself as a gourmet’s delight. One of its characteristics is that it is more elegant than powerful. That is why it will be possible to taste it in its youth thus allowing to wait for the full maturing of the previous, more powerful vintages such as 2005 and 2006. We think that this 2007 has an aging potential of 10 to 15 years. What’s new on the vineyard ? Use of rotary inter-vine hoes for a proper work of the soil beneath the row. Planting of 300 non grafted vine plants (« franc de pied » in French), as an experiment. A new soil and sub-soil study to complete the 2005 works carried out by Claude Bourguignon in order to refine our knowledge about the distinctive terroir of Clos de Tart. What’s new in the winery ? Installing a vast brand new bottling room (washing, capsuling, labeling, packing) with high-tech equipment. Each bottle will receive an individual number engraved in the glass using a laser. This personalised marking (buyer’s code + vintage year + bottle number) which will also be found on the buyer’s invoice, will enable a better traceability of each bottle.

Tasted at the pre-dinner vertical to mark Sylvain Pitiot’s retirement from the domaine, the 2007 Clos de Tart Grand Cru is more easy-going, more nonchalant than the 2008 with bright redcurrant and cranberry fruit mixed with a subtle marine influence; although, it does not have the thrust, the momentum of the ensuing vintage. The palate is balanced with plenty of sappy red fruit. There is something almost Oriental about this Clos de Tart – touches of Hoisin and spice developing towards the finish that has melted in recent years, and become more fleshier and corpulent. I would drink this now and over the next decade.

When you get to the bottom of the stairs and turn right, you enter the coolest, darkest crevices of the cellar. Here lie stocks of Clos de Tart going back decades, and further! The Domaine’s 2007 Museum Release is a vintage–and a wine–that is terrific drinking now, but it will also keep going for years (especially from magnum).
