MD100 – Plans for Modern Shed · Red Cover Studios
I’m in the process of building a shed which was first featured in ReadyMade Magazine. (sadly no longer around.) I managed to grab the plans and some photos from the site before it went offline.
These are the plans for the MD100, by architect Edgar Blazona. It’s something that you should be able to do yourself for about $1500. I’ve modified his 10 x 10 foot design to work in our backyard.
I’ll post the full set of pictures of our building process once we’re done. In the mean time, here are the plans from ReadyMade.

Then I recalled these awesome modular plans published in ReadyMade Magazine back in the day. It took some sleuthing but I finally found the plans. Since they only seem to be in a single place on the internet currently I thought I’d post them here as well for posterity sake.

Edgar Blazona sure is one funky, creative, dude, and I’ve posted before on his free plans MD100 mini-house/studio that was once featured in Readymade Magazine (R.I.P.). I really like the concept and design, and this REALLY COOL time lapse video shows some of the ins and out of the build.
My only question/concern is the HUGE front plexiglas window, which in high winds might buckle/give like a sail, but I could be wrong (and perhaps we could get Edgar to chime in on this, and other things he’s working on, at some point). The video below CRIMINALLY has few views….lets change that for the guy who filmed it- he did a GREAT job. Edgar’s site is listed below too- be sure to visit it- some GREAT eye candy there!
Regardless, its a really cool structure that can be built for approximately $2000 in materials, and where a high level of skill isn’t needed. Below, are a few other photos of this build/model that I’ve found online. Enjoy.

Plans like these, and the ideas, take ALOT of work to produce, so if you ever do go an build the MD100, please be so kind as to send Edgar photos, or support him in some way (if he sells a book, buy one, etc- I’m not sure- a donation?). Free plans, especially good ones, are hard to come by.

Avid readers of ReadyMade magazine may recognize the work of Edgar Blazona. The San Francisco based designer created a do-it-yourself modernist outbuilding featured in issue #10 a while back (see below). Utilizing entirely off-the-shelf materials available at your local Home Depot (for about $1,500), this “prefab” project was a sensation….

MD 100
Even though MD 100 is one of the smallest properties in the Modular Dwellings catalogue, it still varies considerably from MD 42. Subsequently, MD 100 can be used for slightly more reasons than other products in the catalogue, with some even suggesting that it could be used as temporary accommodation.
does MD 100 look like externally?
From an external perspective, MD 100 shares some similarities to all of the other products in the Modular Dwellings range. It focusses significantly on unfinished timber, with this at least providing buyers with the opportunity to brand the product in their own way in the future. The use of corrugated metal also provides some variation.
It could be stated that MD 100 simply takes all of the principles that were prevalent in MD 42 and takes them a step further. For example, the front of the building looks almost identical, with a large window panel sat beside the entrance. Above this, there is another horizontal window – which means occupants have several options if they decide to add curtains.
One of the differences between MD 100 and smaller properties in the range is the emphasis on openings. On some of the buildings, the architects have included a narrow window at the back to at least provide some ventilation. However, this is not the case with MD 100, with the door at the front being the only major opening within the building.
What does MD 100 like from an internal point of view?
Like a lot of the products in the Modern Dwellings catalogue, the design of MD 100 can only be described as being very limited as it makes use of just one room. This is mainly down to the small overall size of the property, with possible uses including:
Garden shed
Pool house
Summer house
Small guest house
A lot of the promotional material for MD 100 focusses on the last option, although whether or not MD 100 is substantial enough to facilitate bedroom facilities is another matter. Instead, one has to imagine that the most popular use for the building will revolve around a small garden outbuilding, with the large amount of natural glass making this possibility very appealing.
On the subject of the internal design, it should be mentioned that Modular Dwelligns have attempted to include as much wood as possible inside the property – although some individuals may wish to finish these off to a much extravagant extent if they are going to be spending a considerable amount of time in the building.
A summary on MD 100
It can certainly be said that MD 100 is a rather specific prefab and will only apply to a small section of the market. Just like most of the products in the range, it takes on that shed-like appearance although the 100 square foot size means that some people may be tempted to use it for temporary living purposes. On the whole, most are probably going to take advantage of it for a small garden social building, though.

Ashley and Jason Get Modular
Though I failed to provide regular status updates on the dwelling, I thought I’d post pictures of our finished product, just in case anyone building their own MD100 happens upon this blog.
We treated the plans for the dwelling as opportunity. Treating the plans as a blank canvas allowed us to be really creative in terms of the structure’s capabilities and functions. While I envisioned a quiet reading space, it soon morphed into a very tiny theater. We have a 90-inch projector screen and wired for surround sound. We also have cable, a DVR, and wireless Internet in the dwelling, along with a very small air conditioner that we cut a special hole for in the back. Obviously, since our version of the dwelling uses quite a bit of electric, it even has its own breaker box (hidden behind the door behind the couch).
In terms of the outer structure, we stayed true to the plans, but did add a little “porch” to the front, where our dogs enjoy sunbathing. We also obviously insulated the walls, and added bamboo flooring, a ceiling fan, and several pendant lights.
It took Jason about 4 months (October-January) with a couple of snow-related delays, since apparently we thought it would be a good idea to build over winter. We also had to go through several electric inspections to get all of this done and Jason never had any building experience prior to jumping into this project, so it was a huge accomplishment! Costs are more difficult to estimate, since we went crazy with updates, but we imagine somewhere between $8,000-$10,000 – which would include everything from lumber to the projector, air conditioner, furniture, and landscaping. But it was well worth it.
