Fisher SA-1000 Legendary Tube Amplifier

The replacement and upgrading of all capacitors in the signal path. Testing of all tubes. Lubrication of all pots. Bias of all tubes. Installation of a power-on delay board for a softer power-on start. This helps extend the life of all components. Testing and replacement of all resistors that measured out of spec or that showed signs of aging. Replacement of diode rectifiers in the power supply for reliability and performance. installation of a MegaSurge InRush Current Limiter for softer and safer starting.

The Fisher SA-1000 is a legendary tube amplifier – right up there on the “Holy Grail” list of HiFi pieces that every audiophile must own at some point. This list includes items like the Quad ESL57, Rogers LS3/5A, Audio Research D79 amp, McIntosh MR78 Tuner, etc.

Many of these changes were made to increase the longevity of the amplifier, and to ensure sure your investment is well protected.

Physical condition is good for the age but far from perfect.

The good:

Faceplate is super clean and free from dents or scratches. Writing is very clean. Tube case is intact and free from dents. All knobs are present and original. The door functions and is solid.

The not so good:

The brown paint on the side of the chassis is flaking off a bit. The transformer tops have a few scratches. The tube case could benefit from a re-spray.

We chose not to re-spray this unit mostly because it’s a collectors item and we’re how it would affect its value.

If you’d like to purchase this piece restored, simply let us know and we will provide a quote. If it was ours to keep we would certainly repaint, as we like things neat and tidy.

Our Testing Process for Amplifiers (Tube) at SkyFi:

We start with a visual inspection of all internal components to make sure there are no signs of stress or aging. Capacitors are checked for telltale sings of bulging or leaking, resistors are checked for signs of overheating or cracking, and tubes are inspected for signs of stress overheating or cracking.

We then power up the unit carefully and run a simple 1k sine wave while monitoring the output on an oscilloscope for signs of distortion or noise. Finally we run the amplifier to its full rated power into the appropriate resistive load provided by our Sencore amplifier tester. If there is an issue, it will usually be noticeable at this point. If it all looks clean we will often test for THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) measured by our Keithley distortion meter, and compare it against the original manufacturers specifications. The amplifier the remains powered on to “burn in” on our test bench for a few hours to make sure there are no heat related issues. If there are balanced inputs available they will also be tested.

We also test all tubes for output gain and leakage on our calibrated B&K 747 tester against the original manufacturers specifications. If needed, the tubes will be replaced from our vast NOS (New Old Stock) vintage or modern inventory.

Final testing involves pushing actual music thorough the amplifier. We’ve learned over time that some issues are only noticeable to a trained ear while listening to familiar source material. Our test bench has reference vintage Kef speakers that we’re very familiar with which quickly reveal any discrepancies. Some amplifiers will then move into our listening room where they are tested with our in-house reference speakers of choice.

Classic Fisher Tube Amp Makes Rare Appearance

The Fisher SA-1000 tube amplifier is a sight to behold with its stately gold faceplate and signature tube cage. The amp also happens to be a legendary piece of audio gear that dates back to the early days of hi-fi.

“It’s a big collector piece,” explains Fernando Zorrilla owner of New Jersey-based SkyFi Audio, a joint venture with New York City’s Stereo Exchange that deals in vintage and esoteric audio gear. “The SA-1000 competed with the Harman Kardon Citation and McIntosh MC275. At the time it was a big powerful tube amplifier — it probably weighs 80-90 pounds.”

The Fisher Radio Corp., founded in 1945 by amateur violinist and patron of the arts Avery Fisher, was a pioneer in high-fidelity audio along with the likes of McIntosh, Harman Kardon, Marantz, and H.H. Scott. And like those fabled brands, Fisher was born out of a passion to advance that state of music reproduction for fellow enthusiasts and, eventually, the public at large.

“This was my hobby,” Fisher said in a 1976 Rolling Stone interview. Before Fisher Radio, he began building radio consoles while working his day job as a book designer, which led to the birth of the short-lived Philharmonic Radio Company. “I started putting these things together for friends and before I knew it, it looked like it could be a supplemental income. I still didn’t dream it would become a full-time occupation…”

Fisher was forced to sell the company during World War II at a time when companies were mobilized to help the military effort. He agreed to stay on as president but the new owners shifted focus to table radios. “I had no interest in that…so when the war was over I resigned and, taking certain key people with me, started Fisher Radio.”

One of Fisher’s many notable achievements, the SA-1000 was introduced in 1963 as a 58 watts/channel step-up to the 24 watts/channel SA-100.

Here’s how Fisher described the amp in its 1963 catalogue: “A new, fresh approach to the art of music reproduction and a concentrated ‘no-compromise’ design effort by world-famous Fisher Engineering Laboratories — these are the ingredients that have created the Fisher SA-1000. With 150 watts IHF [single 75-watt channel driven at 0.5% THD] and 130 watts R.M.S. Power [single 65.5-watt channel driven at clipping or 0.15% THD], this instrument possesses ample reserve capacity for all applications, including use in the largest auditoriums and theatres.” (The 58 watt spec is both channels driven at 0.11% THD.)

The SA-1000 draws on a complement of nine tubes — four 8417’s and pairs of ECC83’s (a.k.a. 12AX7) and ELL80’s around a single ECC808 preamp tube ensconced in a metal canister. The front panel is sparsely appointed with only three knobs and a bias meter. Left of center is a five-position bias-meter selector while the two knobs to the right provide six input-attenuation settings for either channel.

“They’re usually pretty rough when they come in, especially the paint on the transformers,” Zorrilla says. “They’ve typically lived through generations of use having passed from grandpa to the dad to the son so they’re usually pretty beat up and oftentimes missing either a whole knob or the gold cap from the knob, which is hard to find. The glue that held those caps in place would fail.”

Remarkably, this is the second SA-1000 SkyFi has come into possession of in about as many months. The first one sold quickly. “It came to us with a matching preamp from a gentlemen in Montreal who’d had them his whole life. He tried to pack them and sent us pictures two or three times and every time we said, “No, you can’t send them like that.” So one day he drove down and dropped it off at our showroom [in Glen Rock, NJ.] For the record, that’s a 5 to 6 hour trip one way.

There’s no story attached to the current specimen, but Zorrilla confirms that the amplifier is original with no upgrades or modifications and currently works, though he recommends an electrical restoration to ensure reliability over time. It’s also in good condition for a piece of gear that’s almost 60 years old, with clean wiring and a faceplate and tube cage that are free of dents and scratches.

SkyFi’s “as-is” price is $4,999 — just a tad more than the $329.50 it sold for back in 1963. A full-blown restoration with an electronics and cosmetic overhaul could add another $2,500, depending on the components used, or the buyer could opt to restore either the electronics or the cosmetics for about half that.

An electronics restoration includes replacing and biasing all tubes, upgrading all capacitors in the signal path, lubricating or replacing all potentiometers (pots), installing a power-on delay (which helps extend the life of all components), testing and replacing resistors that are out of spec or show signs of aging, replacing diode rectifiers in the power supply, and installing a MegaSurge inRush current limiter for softer, safer starting.

When SkyFi does a cosmetic restoration, the entire component is disassembled and the transfomers, chassis, and tube cage are prepped, primed, painted with period colors and then clear-coated. Brass parts are polished and buffed, knobs are polished (or replaced if necessary), and all writing and numbering is re-stenciled.

“Vintage electronics are weird in that sense where there’s no hard set rule on what makes it more valuable — whether it has original paint or brand new paint,” Zorrilla observes. “It’s really person by person so we will often will leave it up to the customer. They’ll be like, ‘Oh, I want to buy this. Go ahead and give it a full re-spraying and make it look brand new — I don’t really care whether it’s the original paint or not.’”

THE EQUIPMENT: Fisher K-1000, a basic or power amplifier available

in kit form. Supplied with metal cage. Dimensions: l5¼ by 7¾ by 12

inches. Weight: 71 pounds. Price: $279.50. (Factory-built version,

Model SA-1000, $329.50.) Manufacturer: Fisher Radio Corp., 21-21

44th Drive, Long Island City, N.Y., 1101.

COMMENT: The K-1000 is the largest and most powerful amplifier yet

offered by Fisher. Tests of a kit-built sample, conducted at United

States Testing Company, Inc., indicate that it meets its power and

distortion specifications with room to spare. The output circuit

uses a new type of tube, the 8417, which was designed especially for

this amplifier and which is energized by three separate power

supplies, one each for plate, screen-grid, and control-grid

voltages. The input stage uses an unconventional circuit designed

with wide-band characteristics and associated with a step-type

attenuator designed to control signal level without rolling off the

high frequency response. There also is a subsonic filter to prevent

overloading the amplifier with low-frequency noise sources. The

input attenuators (one for each channel) are on the front panel of

the K-1000, along with a pilot lamp, a meter, and another knob for

adjusting the output tubes. Also on the front panel, but concealed

behind a hinged section, are the screw-adjustments for bias and

balance, as well as the subsonic filter switch. The rear of the

amplifier has two pairs of left and right input jacks, a test jack,

a fuse-holder, and left and right speaker terminals of 4, 8, and 16

ohms. Separate grounding terminals also are included on the speaker

terminal strips. No off/on switch is provided; the K-1000 is

intended for use with a control unit that has an AC convenience

outlet into which the K-1000’s line cord would be plugged so that

both units are turned on or off together.

The hardiness of this amplifier is indicated by the fact that USTC

measured its continuous power at the same level specified by Fisher

for its music power rating (the former usually is lower). Harmonic

distortion was found to be very low at all power levels. IM

distortion remained below 0.5% up to 60 watts output, and rose to

only 0.6% at 65 watts output.

Frequency response extended well beyond the 20 to 20,000cps range.

When the subsonic switch was in the OFF position, the bass response

was flat down to 7 cps. When ON the filter caused the extreme low

end to fall off more rapidly, but not until well below 20 cps. The 5-

position attenuator—which may be used to adjust the amplifier’s

gain to suit different input signal levels and to help balance the

two stereo channels— made a difference of about 1 dB in the

response past 20,000 cps, thus confirming the manufacturer’ s claim

that its use will not cause high frequency degradation. Square-wave

response of the K-1000 was very good. The low-frequency photos show

one slight tilt and the more pronounced tilt when the subsonic

filter was OFF and ON respectively; the high frequency photo shows

only a slight ringing and is indicative of good stability and

transient response. The difference in power bandwidth measured on

the two channels is not very important, and means only that the left

channel distortion may be slightly higher than that of the right

when the amplifier is called on to deliver maximum power above 10

kc—a situation relatively infrequently encountered in normal

program reproduction.

The Fisher K-1000, in sum, is one of the better basic amplifiers

available today, being an extremely high-powered unit with very low

distortion, and offering such “response-tailoring ” features as an

input filter and attenuator that do not compromise its important

performance characteristics.

Fisher SA 1000 Amplifiers user reviews : 5 out of 5

[Jun 01, 2006] Sutton Rigg Audio Enthusiast Strength: The overall authority this amp exhibits, from the top octave to the bottom and everything in between. Just music, the way it was recorded. No signature sound, other than the warmth and realism that is thre in recordings that were done right. Not analytical, but not warm and fuzzy either, just solid and true from top to bottom. It is also a beauty to look at. That nice champagne colored potted transformers, complimented with a nice clean layout. Just stunning, but at the same time understated. The KX-200 is a great little amp, the 400 500 series and the 800 series recievers all exhibit similar characteristics, as do the 80 AZ and the 300 and 300B, but this SA-1000 is just something special. Gt one if you can. Reeplace as few components as necessary, and if you must don’t go for the high end esoteric caps and other parts. Stick to orange drops and anything close to the original so you don’t strip away the magic. Too many people with good intentions do just that, they rob the soul of the piece. Weakness: The tubes are getting hard to find and are getting EXPENSIVE! Plus, I’ve watched the price for this amp increase 50% in the last year or so..Other than that, none… Overall I feel that this is one of the finest vintage amplifiers produced during the heyday of the high fidelity era of the early to late 1960’s. Among the contenders were the venerable Marantz 8 and 8B, the Harman Kardon Citation II, Marantz MC275, Dynaco ST 70, and all the others. It is an extremely powerful, beautifully designed amplifier, and in my opinion outshines them all. If you can find one, pick it up. the price on these continues to soar along with all the other comperable gear from the era. The ELL80 and the 8417 are both getting harder and harder to obtain and are no longer in production, so better stock up on an extra set of tubes or two as well. Customer Service
