Danny Koo – TEDxBoston

Described as “unstinting in energetic projection every step of the way” (Calgary Herald), violinist Danny Koo has carved out a distinctive professional profile as a chamber musician, soloist, and recitalist in appearances throughout the world.

Upcoming performances until January 2019 include recitals at Snape Maltings (UK), Mazzoleni Hall (Canada), COC Richard Bradshaw Ampitheatre (Canada), 10 city-tour of South Korea with Bach’s A minor Concerto, duo recitals with double bassist, Minje Sung and violinist, Stefan Jackiw. Arvo Part ‘Tabula Rasa’ with Toronto’s 21c festival.

An avid and sought-after chamber musician, Danny has most recently collaborated with Kim Kashkashian, Jaime Laredo, Andres Diaz, Roberto Diaz, Clive Greensmith, Soovin Kim, Lluis Claret, Joseph Kalichstein, Barry Shiffman, Vivian and Donald Weilerstein. He regularly performs with leading ensembles including ECCO, DITTO, Kafka Quartet, Music Street, Wellesley Chamber Players, duo Punch, Constantia, and the Chameleon Arts Ensemble. In addition, Danny has been participated in a number of high-profile music festivals, including the Transatlantic Encounters at Snape Maltings, Rockport Chamber Music Festival, Music@Menlo, Lake Champlain Chamber Music Festival, Summerfest at La Jolla, Perlman Chamber Music Program, and Banff Chamber Music Program. He has also presented acclaimed recitals in the US such at the Kennedy Center, Jordan Hall, Fanneuil Hall, and Old South Meeting Place.

An outgoing and engaging personality, Danny is well-known media personality and has been profiled on Korean television media such as JTBC “Classic Today,” Mnet “Classic Dominant,” Arirang “Heart to Heart,” and in print media, Marie Claire Korea, and was Playbill’s Choice in Scene Playbill Magazine. He has also garnered worldwide attention as a speaker, giving lectures in Korea sponsored by Lotte and the COEX Starfield Library. Most recently, Danny shared his artistry and commentary at a TEDxBeaconStreet conference, held at the historic Fenway Park.

Music education is a priority for Danny; he has taught at New England Conservatory’s Preparatory School, and leads Toronto’s Academy Chamber Orchestra alongside Barry Shiffman at the Royal Conservatory of Music. In Korea, he has also been featured with Korea’s “Sesame Street” equivalent, the character “Pinkfong” to educate and excite the youngest generation of our world about the impact of music.

A strong believer in creating a tangible change in the world through the arts, Danny was a regular participant of Kim Kashkashian’s “Music for Food”, a community project in which musicians volunteer their performances, and audience donations go to a local food pantry. He has done this since its inception, serving as a coordinator for the (organizing performers to share their music with the wonderful ladies at the shelter) Women’s Lunch Place Concert Series for five years. In addition, he is a proud representative of OXFAM Korea.

Danny’s personal interests include taking long walks, drinking tea, listening to jazz (dreams of jamming with Bill Evans) loves food and is in search of the perfect Bibimbap. (His love for Asian cuisine forces his regular appearance at the gym.)

Born in Chicago in 1991, Danny is currently a Rebanks Fellow at the Royal Conseratory of Music under the direction of Barry Shiffman. Danny holds a Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from the New England Conservatory in Boston, where he studied with Donald Weilerstein, Soovin Kim, and Malcolm Lowe. He plays on a violin made in Naples by Vincenzo Postiglione in 1901.

Danny is represented in Korea by Credia International (크레디아 인터내셔널).

Rebanks Fellow: Danny Koo

I am a firm believer that the violin can not only express human emotions, but also low, earthy grit, and at the same time, soar. It can do everything. I love the violin!

As is the case with many of the other 2018-19 Rebanks Fellows, Koo was struck by the wide range of musical projects he could pursue, as well as the incredible amount of support he received to complete them.

As a Fellow, “you can curate whatever kind of project you want,” says the Chicago-born musician. “It’s so nice. It’s so freeing. And there’s so much support.”

He worked with Riddle Films to record Bach’s chaconne for violin and singers, and collaborated with Korean rapper Lafic on a striking series of promotional videos. Most recently, Koo released his first mini-album, amusingly titled, Danny Boy.

Koo was struck by the immense support he received during his time in the program. “As soon as an idea germinates, staff immediately take action,” Koo says. “I’ve never been involved in a program where everyone is so proactive.”

Koo also credits the program for enabling him to play for his heroes. He was one of several Rebanks Fellows sent to the Lunenburg Academy of Music Performance, where he performed for legendary violinist Gidon Kremer.

“That was a gift,” Koo declares. “It’s in this program that dreams become reality.”

On Classical Music…

DK – Danny Koo

T – Tordney

T: When did you start learning violin?

DK: I started learning the violin at the age of 6. My folks and I used to live in a very small 1 bedroom apartment and whenever my uncle would come to visit, he would practice his viola. I fell in love with the sonority of the string instrument and asked my mom if I could learn the violin!

T: Why do you choose classical music as your career?

DK: I chose fairly late compared to others in my profession. I loved learning and always played the violin as a hobby. The summer before my last year of high school, I went to this incredible festival called ‘Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Arts’ (a 5-week program for music, creative writing, acting). Here was when I really felt the power of the arts and how the arts could have a tangible effect on the world. I was hooked and I’ve been going strong ever since.

T: You said that classical music has the power to change people’s life. How did classical music change you? What are some of the most important and beautiful lessons classical music has taught you?

DK: I was never a social butterfly in high school… I think I always felt a sense of insecurity in my identity as a Korean American and as a short guy that likes music in a school system that rewarded athleticism over the arts. But every summer I would go to a classical music festival and I always loved the ‘Danny’ that I was at these festivals; I felt comfortable being in my own skin. These were chamber music festivals where around 12 of us would all take turns playing with each other in preparation for concerts at the end of the 3 weeks. I learned how to listen to others, how to encourage my peers, how to feel vulnerable, and how to get and also give inspiration to my fellow musicians. Classical music is such a personal thing because there aren’t lyrics and there isn’t a story. Listeners have the opportunity to write their own lyrics, and make their own stories. Everyone is different, and classical music accepts and thrives on that difference.

T: What is practicing like for you? What have you learned from it?

DK: I love practicing because I am a big advocate on becoming one’s best self every single day. I love the patience it requires and the endless creativity. I think every musician has their own way of productive practicing. I love to sing phrases and bass lines while I practice the violin because this helps me vocalize the most natural phrasing and hear the over-arching harmonic progressions in the music!

T: Through your music journey, who would you like to thank?

DK: My parents for never pushing me, and my teachers for always believing in me.

T: Your violin has to be one of your best companions. Can you tell us about the violin you play on?

DK: I play on a Postiglione violin made in Italy in 1902!

For long walks…

T: Is it correct that you like to take long walks?

DK: I love taking long walks. Gives me a chance to enjoy and be inspired by nature and my environment!

T: What discoveries have you made during those walks? Where do you like to walk?

DK: The reason I love Boston and Toronto has to be the walkability of these two cities. I like the spontaneity of walking wherever my feet take me.

About Me…

T: What was 2018 like for you? Can you share with us your New Year’s Resolution?

DK: 2018 was an epic year of hustle and change. I’ve never had as many concerts as I did in 2018 and I’m incredibly grateful for all the opportunities I’ve had so far to share my music and my thoughts. I’m excited for 2019 because my calendar is already booked through July!! So excited for all the music I have to perform and all the various projects that are slowly coming into fruition. My resolution is to keep working hard, always be grateful, and to never stop dreaming.

DANNY KOO – A MAN WITH MANY STRINGS TO HIS BOW!

The Korean-American violinist has always been disciplined throughout his career, practising musical scores over and over again. He knows the meaning of hard work and realises that it is a prerequisite for success. As an accomplished violinist, Danny Koo has made a career by understanding the importance of timing. However, he has also grown to view time at a macro level. «Time is routine and routine is a key component to my life.»

However, Danny also appreciates the value of time from a philosophical perspective. The quote ‘Success is a journey, not a destination’, is clearly something that resonates with Danny. «It is so important to realise the beauty of the present. A few years back, I found myself always focussing on the next destination, next piece of music, next concert and I realised I wasn’t truly enjoying the ‘now’.» Often with age and experience comes maturity and Danny has realised that to remain ambitious and motivated, he has to enjoy the present.

Similar to Danny, Maurice Lacroix employs much creativity in order to produce new watches. It is this shared vision that appealed to Stéphane Waser, Managing Director: «We support talented individuals who have a strong desire to realise their ambitions. Danny shares our values. Like Maurice Lacroix, he appreciates the importance of precision timing. For Maurice Lacroix this may mean skilfully regulating a movement while for Danny it means hitting the right notes at the right time.»

Danny has enjoyed the sweet taste of success on several occasions, but he continues to push himself, seeking fresh challenges and new journeys. Recently, he released a new album called ‘Connected’ and he hopes with its release, more people around the globe will discover his music.
