This year, Joan Baez celebrates a half-century in music; it’s an extraordinary career as both a singer and champion of human rights and social justice. Q:People don’t really know you’re funny.
A: They do by now. A little bit. Been around for 50 years. It depends on which shows you went to – the last 20 years or the first 20. It’s the 50th year of this s- and people who’ve been, they came out of the funny, funny closet a while back. That’s all right. I can still spring it on ’em.
Q:Fifty years? Are you doing anything to mark that milestone?
A: There’s a documentary, “American Masters.” It will be two hours long. I’m doing three tours this year; two in the States, one in Europe, with new musicians. Thank God, they’re wonderful. I put out a new album, which got nominated for a Grammy and didn’t quite make it. Spent a lot of time with Gabe, who sometimes tours with me as a percussion player. I’m looking after my mom, who just turned 96 and had a giant birthday party. She had 96 cupcakes and next year she wants to have 97 men.
Q:Ninety-six – how’s she doing?
A: She’s doing stunningly well. She’s a very, very healthy woman. So the normal stuff, like her leg, it’s hard for her to walk, though. Mom catches a cold, it never turns into anything; she just sneezes a few times and then three days later she’s just fine. It’s that constitution that’s so wonderful.
Q:You’ve made so many albums, what does an album mean to you at this point in your career?
A: This last one meant I met Steve Earle, among other things. I reinvent myself, as you know. At this stage of the game, you have to in order to make any sense. So it was Steve and it was roots and, once again, finding the right songs. It must have been a combination of the songs and Steve and myself and digging into the right studio where they make biscuits every morning. You have biscuits and coffee and just get in there and do it. I’m not sure what the combination is, but it was just standing three-quarters of an inch away from the microphone and doing it one more time and somehow it came out really fresh.
Q:Did anybody notice?
A: Yeah. When you get nominated for a Grammy, somebody noticed.
Q:What’s your No. 1 cause these days?
A: My No. 1 cause is probably my family.
Q:Off the political scene?
A: There’s really no way to really put me off the political scene. Last Thursday, I sang with the Gay Men’s Chorus. I can’t say that’s drumming up a political campaign. It’s just the way I keep in touch with things. I’m going to be part of a big benefit for the local homeless center – InVision it’s called – in this Palo Alto-San Jose area; feeding, clothing the homeless, kind of local stuff. The rest of it, you know, when I walk out onstage I represent a bunch of things. I made up my mind that, at this point, that if something stares me in the face and makes absolute sense for me to do, then I’ll do it. Like when Crawford, Texas, happened. It made absolute sense and there was no question in my mind but that it was something I wanted to support. I got in a plane and went. I’m not looking at the moment. Some things are so obvious when they appear, but I do want to spend time with my 5-year-old granddaughter the way I never did with my 5-year-old son.
Q:What kind of a grandmother are you?
A: She calls me abuela, first of all, which is grandmother in Spanish, because I wouldn’t allow her to call me Grandma. The image of me taking cookies out of an oven with this old gray bun in the back of my head, I thought it was revolting. She was trying. I said, ‘Listen, every time you call me Grandma, I’m going to call you George.’ That’s what finally worked. I play in the mud a lot – I’m that kind of grandmother. We just get down in the mud and play. We play fairies and we play mud. At my house, right now, in the spring, the flowers are blooming. She says ‘Can I pick a flower?’ I say ‘Pick all the flowers you want.’ She comes in laden with flowers and we find all these bowls to put them in. What a place for a kid to be. Yeah, and what a grandmother for her to have.
Q:What are you doing for fun these days besides playing with your granddaughter?
A: I just went over with a friend to Santa Cruz because someone Brazilian was getting married, which meant after the wedding there would be Brazilian dancing and that, to me, is more fun than anything in the world, Latin dancing – at least way up on the top there.
