Sold by Amazon.com, about $800.Kindly refer to the video review. My review is more technical than of the sound per se. However, I do cover the sound toward the end. In summary: Cosmetics are good, build quality acceptable-to-good for the price, sound quality is OUTSTANDING; treble A+, midrange A, bass B- but well controlled and tight. One technical issue with the balance between the left and right channels (video), could use a balance control but doesn’t have one. This is a 1 Watt amplifier (see the video), NOT 8 Watts as specified. However, all-in-all, highly recommended due to it being an excellent value for the price. Regards, Brian.

GemTune GP-01 Review
INTRO
I have been a long time lover of vintage audio gear. I have owned a few tube amps in the past, but ever since ~2 years ago, I started to heavily invest into good audio equipment.
However, there are some problems with modern tube audio equipment. Most modern tube amps use tubes as gimmicks. The manufacturer will simply stick a tube in the amp circuit that does little to nothing. It is just there to jack up the price. Lost of other tube amps simply are not designed, and many more use very low quality parts. The few amps that are actually really good come in really fancy cases, and they add on unnecessary features that drive the price way up. Audionote is a really good example of this. You can put a healthy size deposit on a house for the same money it would take to buy a decent kondo audio note amp.
Now you can always buy vintage tube amps, but they are hard to find, the prices fluctuate constantly, and can sometimes even be a dangerous fire hazard. So unless you know exactly what you are buying, you could easily buy a ticking fire bomb. Older stuff simply was not designed with UL certification in mind.
Yeah another option is DIY. However, unless you are fairly experienced with circuit building, you can can easily hurt yourself in the process.
Yet another option is you can find companies that try to produce cheap quality tube amps. Jolida is one such company and there are a few other small companies that I have recently learned of that are located in canada. However, they try and take short cuts to get the price down. The amps still sound great, but they do not sound as good as the could be.
So, what else can you do?
Normally tube amps come from the western world. The US, UK, CA, and Russia all produce tube amps. Some are good, some are bad, but they are always expensive compared to SS amps.
China has recently started to produce more and more tube equipment. Normally Chinese amps are horrible. They use horrible tubes, terrible parts, and some people have described the build quality as “is this thing trying to kill me?”.
My tube amp recently fried from being exposed to a power surge, so while it is being repaired, I thought I would try and see if I could not find a decent Chinese tube amp for less than 1K that would not blow up, and would sound pretty good compared to higher end tube amps.
The same guy who built me my tube amp recommended I try the Gemtube GP-01. It was 800 bucks on amazon and 1 day shipping was only 11 bucks so I figured why not.
FIRST IMPRESSION
At first glance, the amp is quite impressive. The amp uses two 300b power tubes, two 6N8P preamp tubes, and a 5Z3P rectifier tubes.
The 300b tubes are Psvane tubes which is pretty nice to see considering that a matched pair of these tubes is about 150 bucks. So already a hefty chunk of your purchase went straight into tubes and not into some stupid gimmick. However the rectifier tubes and the two preamp tubes are some weird chinese brand of tube that I have never seen before. I will discus this more in depth later on.
Some people might not care, but I was quite pleased to find that the power button, volume knob, and input knob are all well built and are quite heavy and strong.
There are also some dials on the front. I believe they are there to monitor the voltage (someone can correct me if I am wrong). The dials are not that well built and they look kind of cheap, but they do have a nice orange glow. So for most of you out there, I believe this feature is completely useless.
On the back, the build quality continues to impress me. You get three RCA inputs for CD, DAC, and AUX. It is nice to actually get the ability to have multiple inputs and select between them. I know a lot of people will often times struggle with various inputs and will often times end up buying some cheap switch. This amp takes care of it for you.
The amp also has 3 binding posts per channel. 1 post is ground and the other two are positive, but one positive is meant for 4 ohm speakers, and the other is meant for 8 ohm speakers. So if you buy this, make sure you double check what your speakers require.
Lastly, the amp looks quite nice. It has a brushed metal face plate, the tubes are positioned in such a way where they are symmetrical, and the black metal housing is powder coated and not painted.
FIRST LISTENING IMPRESSIONS
Since most of my gear is tubed, I had to barrow some of my mom’s gear to accurately review just the amp.
I have a very simple setup. I am using a Myryad T-10 CD player, the GemTune amp, and my Snell J3 speakers.
I will have to go buy more CDs tonight to really have a good listen to this amp, but my first thoughts with the AC/DC back in black CD is that this amp actually sounds quite good for what it is. Considering the 300b tube is known for lots of bass and a really warm sound signature, the amp sounds a bit thin. It still sounds a heck of a lot fuller than most tube amps I have heard, and I would dare say that it even sounds better than the border patrol amp I heard at CAF last year. But the bass is still lacking by just a little bit.
I have a feeling that it is due to the weird Chinese tubes I was talking about earlier. The preamp tubes in particular are very important because they feed the 300b tube. If the 300b tube is not being fed correctly, then it is not going to sound it’s best.
Even still, the highs are strangely well presented. Normally the highs on tube amps are sort of rolled off a bit and can cause a suffocated sound, but not here. The highs very smooth. In fact I would say that the highs are similar to how a higher end SS amp sounds like.
The mids are a bit recessed, but again, I believe the preamp tube is to blame for that.
Something odd I have noticed is there seems to be a volume threshold before the amp starts to sound good. At low volumes, the music sounds really flat and kind of boring. My normal listening levels are kind of on the high side, and I have to turn it up even a bit higher still for the amp to really start producing some decent bass. This could change over time, but I will keep this thread up to date until I have completed my full review.
Side notes
There is more to come and I have yet to proof read this review. I just want to get it online so that I can see what I have done and make changes and corrections as I go along. This is far from being a complete review, so please be patient.
