In modern society, many are envious of tall people. Many parents are searching for food and exercises that are believed to help their children grow taller. Their desire has even created a market for nutrition supplements for growth and growth hormone injections.

In North Korea, it is said that a “height-growth” campaign has been staged nationwide. Today, we’ll talk more about this story with Dr. Heo Jeong-pil at the Institute for North Korean Studies Dongguk University.

In North Korea, people prefer taller men and women, although they do not say so explicitly. North Korean media reports, food, and products indirectly tell us that North Koreans are greatly interested in their height and make great efforts to grow taller.

The country recommends stretching and jumping exercises as well as basketball and volleyball for those hoping to increase their height. The first page of physical education textbooks in schools states that one must do physical activities to get taller. North Korean schools organize exercise classes solely for that purpose—a scene not found in South Korea. It shows that North Korean schools put quite a bit of emphasis on height growth.

According to the study on the change of the average height of men and women in 200 countries from 1914 to 2014 at the Europe Science Open Forum in 2016, South Korea marked the largest height increase among the countries over the last century. During the period, the height of South Korean women rose 20.1 centimeters to 162.3 centimeters, while men’s average height increased 15.1 centimeters to 174.9 centimeters.

The report also showed that the height of men and women in North Korea, too, increased considerably. In 1914, North Korean women were even taller than women in South Korea, standing at 149.1 centimeters tall on average. In 2014, the height of North Korean men and women rose to 172 centimeters and 159 centimeters, respectively. Still, they both are shorter than their South Korean counterparts.

From an anthropological perspective, people in North Korea should be taller than those in the South. In general, the body size of people in cold climates is larger than those in warm climates. But North Korean people are on average smaller than those in South Korea and also in Asia overall. I think the biggest factor is malnutrition.

After former leader Kim Il-sung died in 1994, North Korea underwent an extremely difficult period known as the “Arduous March” from 1995 to 1998. The severe food shortages at the time caused local people to remain undersized and smaller in stature, compared to people in other countries.

North Korea has stressed the importance of height growth through instructions of its top leaders. Former leader Kim Jong-il underlined the height-increasing campaign through the introduction of the physical culture and sports law in 1997. Article 32 of the law stipulates that research on physical education for the public should promote people’s health and help teenagers grow taller and develop a balanced body.

The height-increasing movement also existed during the years of Kim Il-sung. The key of the movement was to get all the people well prepared for labor and national defense through physical training. Physical education was a crucial subject in school so students could increase their height and develop their body in a balanced way.

The height-growth campaign during the Kim Il-sung era was associated with state security, while the same campaign in the following Kim Jong-il era was more about regime integration and governance. During the years of Kim Jong-il, basketball and other indoor activities like jumping exercises were recommended to further promote the campaign.

Surveys about North Korean defectors who have resettled in South Korea found that North Korean people have grown taller. The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency conducted a survey on 8,000 North Korean newcomers over the age of 19 between 2005 and 2008. According to the survey, the average height of men and women was 165.4 cm and 154.2 cm, respectively. A 2014 report by the Korea Hana Foundation shows that the average height of men and women aged over 15 increased to 167.3 cm and 155.8 cm, respectively.

In 2015, leader Kim Jong-un instructed his people build a physically strong country based on the revolutionary spirit of Baekdu and open a new golden age. From 2012 to 2015, North Korea built many gyms and cultural facilities so local residents could do exercises in a better environment. It released a research paper, indicating that basketball, the standing long jump and jumping exercises are helpful for increasing height. On March 31, 2019, the official Rodong Sinmun newspaper said that doing exercises about two hours after dinner would help produce more growth hormone than in normal times and would also be good for physical development.

In August 2019, a North Korean propaganda outlet carried an article about the development of a hat and a headband that promote height growth. It claimed that infrared radiation and anions emitted from the hat help the wearer grow taller. It seems North Korea will conduct more extensive research on height growth down the road.

After Kim Jong-un came to power, North Korea expanded its compulsory education from 11 years to 12, reflecting that the leader is interested in and committed to training young students. As a result, schools have stressed the importance of proper growth of students. Schools in North Korea, just like those in other countries, keep a record on students’ development. They measure the heights of students, let them do exercises and check how many centimeters they gained in height. This shows that the schools keep watching whether and how children grow. I guess North Korea will continue to carry out scientific research on this subject.

The country shares borders with China and Russia. I imagine North Koreans may feel stress from being smaller and shorter than their Chinese or Russian counterparts.

They will probably make constant efforts to increase their height. If the top leader continues to show interest in this matter, North Korean people will improve their physique to some extent.

To increase height, it is crucial that people eat a balanced diet and get all the nutrients their body needs.

According to the 2021 edition of the joint research by the U.N. Children’s Fund, the World Health Organization and the Word Bank on the estimates of malnutrition among children, 317,800 North Korean children under the age of 5 suffered from stunted growth in 2020, with the child stunting rate reaching 18.2 percent. The situation improved from 2012, when the figure was 26.1 percent. But it still falls below international standards. The report points out that stunted growth resulting from poor nutrition may negatively affect height growth and brain development as well. It seems proper nutrition should come first in North Korea’s height-growth campaign.

Creatrip: How The Average Height In Korea Changed Over The Years

Many Koreans tend to be obsessed with height. From foods to help them grow to growth hormones to growth clinics, parents work hard from an early age to help their child grow tall.

So how tall are Koreans? Are they all tall like celebrities? And what height would they prefer in a partner?

Today we’ll dive into the height of Koreans! Oh, and since statistics are so diverse, please be aware that there may be an error of about 1-2 cm for each.

The Average Height Of Koreans

Based on the numbers by Statistics Korea in 2020, the average heights of Koreans is as follows.

20’s 30’s Men Women Men Women 173.80 cm

(5’7 ft) 161.40 cm

(5’2 ft) 174.05 cm

(5’7 ft) 161.18 cm

(5’2 ft)

By looking at the numbers, you can get a rough idea right? I’ll give you some more examples with visuals!

BTS Jimin and Suga are the average height of Korean men in their 20’s!

Red Velvet Seulgi and Twice Momo are the average height of women in their 20’s. These women have good proportions so they look taller than they are but you can get a good sense!

According to a study by Imperial College London in the UK, Korean men ranked 68th in height and women ranked 60th at 19 years old.

Source: KBS

According to a 2014 survey, Korean men have grown about 15 cm (5.9 in) and Korean women have grown about 20 cm (7.8 in) over the past 100 years. Isn’t it a HUGE change?

In fact, it is said that Koreans have grown the most in the world over the past 100 years.

Even within the family, you can notice a difference in height from generations.

Let me show you an example. This is a photo of my family taken a few years ago. The far left is my father, the middle is my grandfather and the far right is my brother.

My grandfather was born in the 1930s and is 163 cm (5’3 ft), my father was born in the 1960s and is 169 cm (5’5 ft), and my brother was born in the late 1990s and is 181 cm (5’9 ft)!

Although height decreases gradually when you age, there is a noticeable difference between each generation.

What has happened in Korea in the last 100 years for the average height to increase like this?

Why The Average Height Increased

Nutrition is probably the biggest reason why the average height increased.

Source: GQ

Korea began to modernize at the end of the 19th century and achieved rapid growth in the 1970s and 80s! The photo above on the left is from the 1950s and the right is the present.

Surprisingly, both are photos of the Seoul landscape from Inwangsan. You can really see how it has developed over the last 70 years!

Source: Florida Korea

Before its modernization, Korea heavily relied on agriculture and children couldn’t get enough nutrition due to the poor state of the country. In really difficult times, people peeled bark and ate the mud. My parents tell me that if they also got enough nutrition as we do now, they’d have grown more as well.

In other words, most people these days get a lot of nutrients so they grow a lot taller.

Also, rather than simply increasing the amount of food consumed, the changes in the food have a lot of influence as well. In fact, Koreans were known to eat a lot 100 years ago too!

Western missionaries who visited Korea in the past are said to have been amazed at how much Koreans ate. One missionary even left a record saying, “The average amount of a worker’s meal is 1 liter of rice. Many people easily eat more than 2-3 servings. An old man emptied five bowls even though he claimed to have no appetite.” Even though they ate so much, why didn’t they grow?

It is because of the lack of meat consumption! Koreans farmed a lot, but because meat was so precious, ordinary people ate much more rice than meat. Can you believe the size of that bowl on the photo above? I was really shocked when I saw the photo for the first time. That’s almost enough to feed a family of 4!

These various kinds of Korean full-course meals (Hanjeongsik) could only be eaten by royals, and commoners could only eat rice and simple side dishes.

Source: Zen Korea

A Korean ceramics company compared the sizes of rice bowls by each time period. It is said to have been about 680ml in the 1940s, and about 190ml now. 680ml is almost four times our bowls now! I haven’t seen anyone around me eat that much. If you are a Mukbang Youtuber, then maybe!

As the amount of rice intake decreased, the amount of meat intake increased dramatically. You probably know many meat dishes that Korea is known for such as chicken , galbi, samgyeopsal and more! As the carbohydrate intake reduced, meat intake increased. Which helped the nutrients intake increase overall!

Don’t get the wrong idea though, Koreans still LOVE rice! There is also a saying that Korean desserts are fried rice. Whatever we eat, we ALWAYS eat fried rice at the end. Many of my friends actually prefer the fried rice at the end more than the main dish.

The Difference Between North Korea

We can see that nutrients impacted the average height increase of South Koreans when compared with North Korea.

Source: Wolgan Chosun

When measuring North Koreans who escaped to South Korea, the average height of an adult male was 165 cm (5’4 ft) and that of a woman was 154 cm (5 ft). There is about a 7cm (2.7 in) difference when compared with South Koreans. Even though South Koreans and North Koreans share the same gene, the difference is that many people in North Korea can’t get proper nutrients because of the economic situation there.

Will The Height Continue To Grow?

If the average height of Koreans has grown significantly over 100 years, wouldn’t it be possible to grow even taller in the future? However, statistics show that there hasn’t been a huge growth recently. These statistics are accurate as Korean men go through physical examinations to go to the military. There may be limitations in genes, but it seems to also be related to the amount of sleep people get.

The average hours of sleep for Koreans is 7 hours and 41 minutes, which is almost 40 minutes less than the OECD average. When researching adults ONLY, the average amount decreased to 6.8 hours only.

Source: Oh my news

Students don’t get enough sleep due to excessive schooling as university entrance exams approach. Then as an adult, excessive work also affects the amount of sleep they can get. I remember sleeping only 5-6 hours a day when I was preparing for my university entrance exam. My friends who studied even harder only got around 4 hours of sleep per day.

Height Preferred By Koreans

Each person’s preference may differ, but I’ll explain what I personally feel as a Korean myself. Also, I’ll provide actual data from a survey.

Source: The celeb

First of all, the standard of height for a Korean man is around 180 cm (5’9 ft). This can be used as a standard to determine if an individual is short or tall. So usually people that are close to 180 cm (5’9 ft), just round it up to seem tall.

As for Korean women, the standard of height is around 165 cm (5’4 ft). It seems that you’re labelled as a tall woman if their height exceeds this number. These are my personal thoughts, now I will show you some actual data!

According to the results of a survey conducted by a Korean dating app Amanda, the most popular men amongst women were 176-180 cm (5’7-5’9 ft) tall. The second popular height was around 181-185 cm (5’9-6 ft). Considering that the average height of Korean men is 173-174 cm (5’6-5’7 ft), isn’t it a lot taller? It seems that Korean women usually prefer men who are 10-15 cm (3-5 in) taller than them.

The most popular women amongst men were around 161-165 cm (5’2-5’4 ft). The second most popular was 156-160 cm (5’1-5’2 ft). Considering that the average height of Korean women is between 161-162cm (5’2-5’3 ft), there is not much of a difference! It seems that women certainly prefer taller men, possibly because being tall is linked to masculinity and they feel protected. On the contrary, men seem to prefer shorter women.

That wraps up the post for today! Did you learn something new? I learned a couple of things as I was doing my research that I was quite shocked about! If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment down below.

[Weekender] Korea’s obsession with tallness

“I’m a 12-year-old girl and 158 centimeters tall. All my best friends are at least 160 centimeters in height. My goal is to eventually reach 180 centimeters. Please advise how I can grow taller.”

The anonymous writer of the post on web portal Naver speaks for many others — children and parents alike — in their quest to stand above others, literally.

The average height of Koreans was 170 centimeters for men and 157 centimeters for women in 2017, according to the national statistics body’s January 2019 report.

By age group, the figures are slightly higher among those in their 20s and 30s, averaging at 173 centimeters for men and 161 centimeters for women. The anonymous writer is well over the average female height at age 12 and has the potential to grow taller before her growth plates close between age 13 and 17.Koreans’ fixation with height came under the spotlight in 2009, when a female university student commented on the program “Global Talk Show” that any man shorter than 180 centimeters was a “loser.” Her remarks were met with shocked protests from men, which later turned into self-deprecating jokes among those below the 180-centimeter mark.Obsession and social discrimination associated with tallness are rampant everywhere — not just in Korea. The perils of heightism are debated constantly. Contrary to popular belief, being tall is more related to genes and nutrition than race, with health experts pointing to the increasing average height in emerging Asian economies and the relatively unchanged average height in western countries like the US.With tallness considered a social advantage, parents often wish their children would grow up to be taller than their peers.“Since both my husband and I are considered short on average, I am most worried about our son inheriting that and plan to do everything I can to help him grow taller so that he won’t face heartache or discrimination over his height,” said Kim Eun-joo, a mother of a 6-year-old.This desire has created a niche market for growth hormones and pediatric nutrition supplements. The market for pediatric growth supplements shot up from 6.7 billion won ($5.8 million) in 2017 to 20.7 billion won in 2018, according to the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. For children who show signs of growth problems — if they are 10 cm shorter than the average height for their age and grow less than 5 cm a year — such growth deficiency is often treated with hormone injections. The market size for prescription-based growth hormone treatment in Korea is roughly 100 billion won, according to Dong-A ST, whose Growtropin human growth hormone brought in 19.5 billion won in revenue here in 2018.The pie is shared among Daewoong Pharmaceutical’s Caretropin, LG Chem Life Sciences’ Eutropin and global pharmas Pfizer and Merck’s products. These human growth hormone shots have to be administered weekly for about a year. It is a costly endeavor and the results are not guaranteed.Lim Jae-seon remembers receiving the weekly shots in her abdomen when she was 13. However, at her current age of 25, she stands 153 centimeters tall, while her parents are above average height.Lim sometimes wonders if life would be better taller, though she is content the way she is.Other than prescription hormones, over-the-counter health supplements are cheaper and easier to come by, but this spawns problems such as exaggerated or false claims in their marketing. In October 2019, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety identified five cases of false advertisements for health supplements claiming to have growth-triggering qualities. One such advertisement used fake reviews that said a certain patented ingredient in the food had helped children grow taller. These reviews were accompanied by convincing before-and-after photos that later turned out to have no relation to the product. Many of the products had tested their growth-enhancing features on animals or cells — not humans. The ministry determined that these tests were insufficient to scientifically back up the advertising claims. Furthermore, the amount of the said patented ingredient was too insignificant to have any effects on the human body, the ministry said. There are also products gaining popularity via word of mouth or social media.A number of Korean online bloggers have been promoting direct purchases of Japanese seaweed calcium tablets. But these were not checked for safety or efficacy by the ministry, unlike officially traded pharmaceuticals.Larger pharmaceutical companies stick to products that have official approval.Hanmi Pharmaceutical sells its chewable multi-supplement Ten Ten only through registered pharmacists. Ten Ten is not sold at online shopping malls, general retailers and supermarkets. The strawberry-flavored multi-supplement contains vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, C, D and E, calcium, magnesium, and anti-oxidant Coenzyme Q10.Chong Kun Dang’s Iker — pronounced “eye-ker” and meaning “child, grow” in Korean — comprises the patented HT042, a combination of milk vetch root extract and others, which the Drug Ministry has approved as aiding growth.Cheong Kwan Jang’s I-kicker and Hongyui General are ginseng-based drinks not directly linked with expedited growth in children, but they are advertised as being able to increase immunity in kids, helping them to be “healthy” and possibly “grow well.”By Lim Jeong-yeo ( [email protected]

South Korean supplement trends: Red ginseng and probiotics popular as 69% say they use health functional foods

The new data comes after the number of South Koreans consuming health functional foods has risen steadily in recent years.

In 2012, there were 50.2 per cent of South Koreans purchasing such product, which increased to 60.6 per cent in 2017, 63.6 per cent in 2018, and 67.6 per cent in 2019.

Last year, the figure hit 68.9 per cent.

As of 2019, the country’s health functional food production was worth KRW$2.95tr (US$2.59bn).

Red ginseng, probiotics, vitamins and minerals, as well as EPA and DHA were the most produced products. Imports wise, complex nutrients, fructo-oligosaccharides, protein were the more popular choices.

One in three respondents said he/she purchased health functional foods due to friends’ recommendation, 24.4 per cent cited internet advertisement, and 11.2 per cent said it was due to home shopping advertisements.

Another 10.7 per cent said they were attracted to the hype created around a certain product.

The MFDS said findings of the survey would allow them to design education projects and improve existing policies on health functional foods.

“It turns out that consumers are relatively well aware of health functional foods and [the related] information,” it said.

Findings showed that 70.9 per cent of the respondents knew the differences between health functional foods and general foods.

Another 74.9 per cent said they could recognise the health functional foods logo granted to products certified by the MFDS.

The percentage of respondents who could recognise the logo had increased with time, rising from 59.3 per cent in 2017 to 69.9 per cent in 2019.

Weight loss hype

The ministry also caught a burgeoning number of weight loss products that were not supported by scientific evidence or made dubious claims.

Over 1,000 weight loss products sold online were examined and 574 of them were found to have made problematic claims and advertisements.

A breakdown showed that 273 of them have marketed their product wrongly as health functional foods, 200 made false or exaggerated claims, 76 claimed to prevent and/or treat diseases, 14 involved consumer deception, and 11 could be confused as a medicine.

For example, there are products that claim to be “diet pills”, “appetite suppressants”, and “diuretic drugs”, which could be mistaken as medicines.

On the other hand, there are advertising of products with functionalities not recognised by the MFDS, such as tea for reducing puffiness.

There are also cases whereby general foods were advertised as functional foods that claim to produce weight loss, skin improvement effects.

“This inspection was conducted to prevent damage to consumers, as the amount of [physical] activities have decreased due to COVID-19 and there is an increased interest and consumption of diet products,” the MFDS said.

It had requested the relevant authorities to block websites selling such products.
