Does Tesla have a million mile battery?

Despite the anticipation, which was also reflected in a 190% stock price increase for Tesla leading up to Battery Day, Musk conceded that the million mile battery has a long road ahead, reports the LA Times. Dreams, and stock, deflated, and we will have to wait until at least 2030, according to Musk.

Battery researcher Jeff Dahn: Why the million-mile battery makes sense

The battery research team around Jeff Dahn continues to work on the million-mile battery. As the Tesla battery researcher explained at an online conference, the actual goal is not to make an electric car drive 1.6 million kilometres with it but to be able to use the battery in V2G applications.

In essence, the work was already described back in October 2020, when Dahn and his team presented a cell that is supposed to last for around 10,000 cycles and would provide traction current for over three million kilometres. Dahn also referred to these results during his appearance at the battery software conference ‘Twaice Vision’, which was organised by the Munich-based battery analytics specialist Twaice.

In some conclusions, however, Dahn, who tuned in directly from his office at Dalhousie University, deviated from previous statements. In 2020, for example, Dahn had mentioned the use in autonomously driving taxi cabs with extremely high mileage as a possible field of application for such cells.

At the Twaice online conference broadcast from Munich, the battery researcher said that the use of such long-lasting cells in private cars is not only possible, but actually necessary in the future, although not to actually drive well over a million miles in an electric car with them.

“We have to do without fossil fuels,” Dahn said during his presentation. “It is cheaper to install solar panels and wind power than coal. However, energy production is not so constant, so we need energy storage on a large scale.”

V2G solves energy storage shortage

A good thing, he said, is that battery production worldwide will increase more than fivefold by 2030, starting from 2020. Here, the vast majority of announced and planned battery cell production capacity will be for all types of electric vehicles, from e-bikes to electric cars to battery-electric buses and trucks. “Growth will be driven by eMobility applications, less by energy storage,” says Dahn.

In order to nevertheless be able to store corresponding amounts of energy in grid energy storages, the development of vehicle-2-grid (V2G) applications is inevitable, according to Dahn. With bidirectional charging, the storage capacity built into the electric car can be used for grid tasks: The consideration in and of itself is not new – most cars are stationary for most of the day.

According to the battery researcher, the cells must be suitable for this task. “If an EV battery is designed for 800 cycles, that is enough for most car applications, but it cannot be used well for V2G,” says Dahn. He calculates 400 cycles per year for grid energy storage. “At 10,000 cycles, such a battery cell will last 25 years, which also matches the lifespan of solar panels and wind turbines,” says the researcher.

To achieve such cycle resistance, Dahn’s research team works with additives for the electrolyte. In the cell, the electrolyte reacts with the electrode materials over time, which is why a thin layer of reaction products is deposited on the surface of the anode and cathode. Since many of these reaction products contain lithium, they continue to enable the transport of lithium ions, yet the “solid electrolyte interphase” film ensures reduced ion transport. As the cell ages, the usable capacity decreases.

Reactive additives in the electrolyte are meant to reduce the reaction with the electrode material and thus the formation of this film. “Using these additives, with only a few percent by weight admixture, one can considerably extend the life of lithium-ion batteries,” says Dahn.

Cells for stationary storage has different requirements than an electric car

Dahn’s team is working with an NMC532 cell with a graphite anode. These cells are purchased dry, i.e. without electrolyte, from a Chinese supplier. The electrolyte is then mixed with the additives in the laboratory. “Finding the ideal mixture of additives is a huge challenge, and we spend a lot of time on it in the lab,” says Dahn. Over several years, a combination of materials was developed that still reaches 90 percent of its original capacity after 12,000 cycles at room temperature.

Here it must be noted that such durability is currently only possible in the laboratory, and even that only with low charge and discharge powers. This cell was charged and discharged at 1C. With up to 3C, the durability is still above average, but nowhere near as good. However, operation at 1C is important for vehicle-to-grid applications when the car is charged or discharged at low power. Fast charging, however, also harms this durable battery in the long run.

At the end of his talk at ‘Twaice Vision’, Dahn reports on quite different challenges, namely, that if the cell chemistry lasts this long, other components like the housing, the module hardware or the battery management system will fail first. “We already had such a case in our lab that the charging equipment failed and we had to move the cell to a new environment,” says Dahn.

Dalhousie University’s research partnership with Tesla is exclusive and was renewed in January 2021. The Californian electric car maker is thus more than a simple third-party funder for the university. The first agreement was signed in June 2015, and officially the agreement, which began in 2016, was set to run until 2021. The current agreement runs until “at least 2026”.

Tesla builds its own battery packs, but imports the several thousands battery cells needed per pack from suppliers, mainly Panasonic. The automaker is heavily investing to change that by building the Gigafactory, in partnership with Panasonic, to manufacture both the cells and battery packs in the Nevada desert east of Reno.

But the planned output of the factory is 35 GWh in battery cells and 50 GWh in battery packs, meaning the Gigafactory will need to import 15 GWh of battery cells. Tesla already confirmed its intention to source the cells from more than one suppliers “potentially including Panasonic”, and today we learn through a new report from Asia Nikkei that the company is reportedly in the final stages of negotiations with LG Chem. expand full story

Four-million-mile battery is now a reality

Dahn, a world-renowned battery scientist and NSERC/Tesla Canada Chair, presented the exciting news during his keynote presentation (titled: More than a million miles and a century of life) at the international battery seminar (IBS) held 28 -31 March 2022 in Orlando, Florida.

The term “Million Mile” battery first came to life after Dahn’s 2019 open access publication in Journal of The Electrochemical Society (JES) stating “we conclude that cells of this type should be able to power an electric vehicle for over 1.6 million kilometers (1 million miles) and last at least two decades in grid storage”.

South Korean chemical company

South Korean lithium ion battery manufacturer and chemicals company

LG Chem Ltd. (Korean: LG화학), often referred to as LG Chemical, is the largest Korean chemical company[1] and is headquartered in Seoul, South Korea. It was the 10th largest chemical company in the world by sales in 2017.[citation needed] It was first established as the Lucky Chemical Industrial Corporation, which manufactured cosmetics. It is now solely a business-to-business company (consumer products division was spun off into LG Household & Health Care).

The company has eight factories in South Korea and a network of 29 business locations in 15 countries. This network includes a holding company in China, 14 overseas manufacturing subsidiaries, five marketing subsidiaries, seven representative offices, and two R&D centers.[citation needed] The Financial Times reported on April 2, 2017, that LG Chem would be expanding battery production in China. At the time, China accounted for one-third of the company’s total sales.[2] In April 2019, LG Chem sued rival SK Innovation for allegedly stealing trade secrets for manufacturing electric vehicle batteries.[3]

Business and product areas [ edit ]

LG Chem has three main business areas:

Basic materials and chemicals

Information technology and electronics materials

Energy solutions

Basic materials and chemicals [ edit ]

LG Chem is a supplier of petrochemicals ranging from basic distillates to specialty polymers. For example, it is a large producer of common plastics such as acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS),[4] styrene-acrylonitrile resin (SAN),[5] and polyvinyl chloride (PVC).[6] It also produces raw materials and liquids, including plasticizers, specialty additives, alcohols, polyolefins, acrylic acid, synthetic rubber, styrenics, performance polymers, engineering plastics, elastomers, conductive resins, and other chemicals.

Information technology and electronics materials [ edit ]

LG Chem supplies display and optical films, polarizers, printed circuit materials, and toners. It also supplies LCD polarizers, which are multi-layer sheets of film applied to the top and bottom surfaces of TFT-LCD panels to transmit the light from the backlight unit through the panel, and 3D FPR (film-type patterned retarder) film, which enables three-dimensional viewing.

Energy solutions [ edit ]

Chevrolet Volt, known as the Opel Ampera in Europe

LG Chem completed development and began mass production of Korea’s first lithium-ion batteries back in 1999. At the end of 2011, LG Chem was the world’s third-largest maker with an annual production capacity of 1 billion cells.[citation needed] It is also a supplier of automotive battery for electric vehicles, such as the Ford Focus, Chevrolet Volt and Renault ZOE.

LG Chem Michigan is a wholly owned subsidiary of LG Chem based in Holland, Michigan[7] which operates a plant to manufacture advanced battery cells for electric vehicles. The US$303 million Holland plant received 50% of its funding from U.S. Department of Energy matching stimulus funds,[8] and started manufacturing battery systems in 2013.[9] The plant can produce enough cells per year to build between 50,000 and 200,000 battery packs for electric cars and hybrids such as the Chevrolet Volt by General Motors,[10][11][12][13][14] the Ford Focus Electric, and upcoming plug-in electric vehicles from other carmakers.[15] Its research and development arm, called LG Chem Power, is based in nearby Troy, Michigan.[16] LG Chem Power and LG Chem Michigan were originally one company called Compact Power, Inc.[17]

Both the Chevrolet Volt and the Ford Focus Electric initially used cells manufactured in Korea by parent LG Chem[18][19] and then later switched to cells produced in LG Chem Michigan’s Holland plant once it opened.

In September 2020, LG Chem unveiled its plan to publicly list its energy division under the name of LG Energy Solution by December.[20]

Accidents and incidents [ edit ]

Visakhapatnam gas leak [ edit ]

On 7 May 2020, a gas leak incident that took place at the LG Polymer plant at Gopalapatnam on the outskirts of Visakhapatnam resulted in the death of 12 people, hospitalization of over 300 and around thousands falling sick. Nearly 3000 people were evacuated from villages in five-kilometre radius of the plant. The gas reportedly started leaking around 2:30 am when the workers were preparing to reopen the plant after the lockdown ordered due COVID-19 pandemic was relaxed in the region.[21][22]

Seosan plant explosion [ edit ]

On 19 May 2020, an alkylaluminum-based catalyst powder exploded due to high-pressure while being transported at the packing room of the LG Chem plant at Seosan. The explosion exposed the pyrophoric powder to the air, causing a fire. As a result, a 39-year-old researcher died and two more workers suffered second-degree burns.[23][24][25]

Hyundai Group and LG Chem launch EV & Battery Challenge

The chairmen of Hyundai Motor Group and LG Chem sat down recently to explore ideas for collaboration that include a joint venture in Indonesia to produce electric vehicle batteries. One early result of their efforts is the EV & Battery Challenge, a global competition seeking startups with working technologies that will add value to battery development and production, and enhance customer’s total EV ownership experience. Broken into two categories of innovation, the contest is looking for battery tech in the areas of management and maintenance, materials, reuse and recycling, and manufacturing and quality control. For electric vehicles, startups with innovations in the EV business model, charging, components, fleet management, and customer service are encouraged to apply.

LG held a similar event last year open to new inventions specifically for batteries. Nearly 130 applicants applied from 27 countries. After a Battery Challenge Pitch Day at the LG Magok Science Park in South Korea, the company chose five finalists who received up to $2 million in funding through formal partnership with the conglomerate. LG said it didn’t walk away from the 124 candidates not chosen, “continuing to work closely [with them] and offer support in terms of technological evaluation and future investment.”

The EV & Battery Challenge dangles the same prizes — financial support and the chance to work in Hyundai and LG facilities with their tools, engineers, and knowledge.

Applicants need to have a non-commercialized working prototype clearly different from what’s currently on the market, “strong expertise in the battery and mobility sector,” and “a business model based on credible commercial and economic assumptions.”

The challenge is open from now until August 28. Hyundai and LG will review applications in September, then hold video interviews with a winnowed group in October and November. In November, finalists will be invited to a two-day workshop at Hyundai’s CRADLE hub in Silicon Valley, where the automaker bases its innovation initiatives in the U.S.

New Energy Nexus, “an international non-profit that supports clean energy entrepreneurs with funds, accelerators, and networks,” is overseeing the EV & Battery Challenge. The potential reward for LG is finding a mythical piece of battery tech to counter the million-mile packs supposedly on the verge of release from China’s CATL or U.S. automaker Tesla, and fellow South Korean firm Samsung’s future solid state batteries. Hyundai will be looking for solutions to help differentiate and promote the 44 electrified vehicles it plans to launch by 2025, 23 of them to be pure electric offerings.

Hyundai, LG Chem draw contest to invest in EV and battery startups

June 22 (Reuters) – South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Group and battery maker LG Chem Ltd on Monday launched a global contest to identify up to 10 electric vehicle and battery startups for potential investment and development of environment-friendly automobiles.

The companies said they aim to select startups with technological capabilities to help the development of future non-polluting cars through the competition, called ‘EV and Battery Challenge’.

Automakers world over are making massive investments in zero-emission and self-driving technology as they look to move away from traditional internal combustion engines that produce carbon emissions to tackle global warming.

Hyundai Motor Group, which includes Hyundai Motor Co and sister company Kia Motors, has earlier said it plans to deploy 44 eco-friendly automobiles by 2025, including 23 electric vehicles.

Earlier this year, LG Chem was chosen here as one of the battery suppliers for Hyundai Motor Group’s upcoming new electric vehicles.

Applications for the competition are open through Aug. 28.

“Start-ups that have working prototypes and are building technologies in EV charging and fleet management, power electronics and components…are strongly encouraged to participate,” the companies said. (Reporting by Shreyasee Raj in Bengaluru; Editing by Shinjini Ganguli)

History of LG Chem

While the product was in great demand and selling well with high popularity, an unexpected problem occurred. Merchants often made the complaint that the container’s lid broke easily.

‘Lucky Cream,’ launched by Lucky Chemical Co., Ltd. (the predecessor of LG Chem) in 1947.

“Is there any way we can make an unbreakable lid? This is really frustrating. Can anyone do research on this?”

EV And Battery Challenge: Hyundai, Kia, And LG Chem Want Startup Help

Imagine a Shark Tank program dedicated to electric cars. This is more or less the idea behind the EV and Battery Challenge. The difference is that this startup competition is not promoted by ABC but rather by Hyundai, Kia, and LG Chem. The three Korean companies want to help the best ideas flourish – and get a slice of the cake if it proves to be delicious.

The EV and Battery Challenge will open for applications exclusively through a dedicated website from June 22 up to August 28. After a preliminary analysis of business feasibility, technology, innovation, and so forth, the startups with the best ideas will go through an online interview in October. COVID-19 times, remember?

That final selection will allow a few companies to go to the Hyundai CRADLE in November. That is an open innovation platform the Korean company has in Silicon Valley. At that point, the startups will discuss if they will have a deeper partnership with any of the Korean titans or if they prefer to keep independent.

The ideas that will be evaluated should tackle:

EV next-generation battery materials to increase mileage and safety

control and maintenance to increase battery efficiency and ease of use

Reuse and recycle technologies such as used batteries to reduce battery costs

Battery productivity improvement and quality control

Electric vehicle driving parts

Electric vehicle charging and energy management

Electric vehicle personalization service.

We strongly believe the focus will be on cell materials and improvement. As we have already discussed here many times, battery packs respond for 51 percent of the total cost of an electric vehicle. Any cost reduction in such a core component will make electric cars that lose money make a profit and profitable ones become cash cows.

When you develop stuff inhouse, you may make money with patents or with the edge you may get with the breakthroughs if you achieve any. If you don’t, you end up with meaningful losses, including having to buy the better technology someone else developed. We are sure LG, Hyundai, and Kia have their own researches going on, but it is always a good idea to listen to other people’s ideas. One of them could put them way ahead of the pack.

LG said it didn’t walk away from the 124 candidates not chosen, “continuing to work closely [with them] and offer support in terms of technological evaluation and future investment.” The EV & Battery Challenge dangles the same prizes — financial support and the chance to work in Hyundai and LG facilities with their tools, engineers, and knowledge. Applicants need to have a non-commercialized working prototype clearly different from what’s currently on the market, “strong expertise in the battery and mobility sector,” and “a business model based on credible commercial and economic assumptions.” The challenge is open from now until August 28.

The ideas that will be evaluated should tackle: EV next-generation battery materials to increase mileage and safety control and maintenance to increase battery efficiency and ease of use Reuse and recycle technologies such as used batteries to reduce battery costs Battery productivity improvement and quality control Electric vehicle driving parts Electric vehicle charging and energy management Electric vehicle personalization service.
