Starbucks is testing digital menus in some stores that can be tweaked throughout the day to promote specific menu items.
The move is intended to bolster select dayparts, specifically the afternoon, which has seen sluggish sales at the chain recently.
“Digital menu boards are one of several in-store efforts we are introducing as part of enhanced storytelling with our stores,” a Starbucks spokeswoman said Friday. “These are an example of the work underway as we focus on our operational priorities.”
The spokeswoman declined to say how many units currently have digital menu boards or reveal any plans for their future implementation, saying the company is gathering feedback on them from employees and customers.
A Starbucks in Chicago’s Loop has a six-panel digital menu, which showed images of tomato-basil soup and a grilled cheese sandwich one recent afternoon, Bloomberg reported.
Dunkin’ Donuts, Chili’s and Starbucks have all recently announced plans to beef up afternoon sales. Starbucks is focusing on its mobile app to draw time-pressed p.m. consumers seeking food and drink on the go.
“Just like we figured out and cracked the code in the morning daypart, we will do the same thing in the afternoon,” Starbucks Chairman Howard Schultz said during a conference call with analysts earlier this year.

Anticipating customer needs by continuously improving store operations and leveraging technology, Starbucks enhanced their Drive Thru experience by replacing existing drive-thru menu boards with digital order screens.

A couple of Starbucks located in Tacoma, Washington now have huge digital menu boards! Today I visited two Starbucks stores both using them. One was in Tacoma and the other in University Place (which is a small city immediately adjacent to Tacoma).
The menu boards have high quality displays with bright colors, easily popping out at you from a distance away. The displays can fade in and out – For example it might display an image promoting Blonde Espresso or alternatively it may display alternative milk options. I also saw a display featuring the Starbucks Sous Vide Egg Bites. The actual menu portion of the board uses white font against a black background.
This is not the first time that Starbucks has experimented with digital menu boards – there was a single store test in 2010!
On the plus side, no more wasted paper, constantly changing and then tossed out in a few months as promotions change. There are something like 13,000 United States Starbucks locations – that’s a lot of printed paper menus, ever changing and tossed out. On the down side, most stores are designed to have extra storage shelving immediately behind the menu boards and now with the digital menu boards, that space is lost. One concern could be that if the store has no control over what’s being promoted on the menu boards, it is possible that the menu boards could be displaying products that the store has sold out of, or for one reason or another the store doesn’t carry that product.

The director of operations at the newly built Westin Irving Convention Center at Las Colinas contacted us about designing and developing digital custom menu boards for their Starbucks Craft Coffee Shop. The design had to meet the strict Starbucks branding guidelines as well as approval by Starbucks.
The Solution:
We designed the digital boards based on branding guidelines as well as coffee shop menus supplied by the client. After design approval by the director of operations and by Starbucks we developed the boards to exact specifications. Coffee shop staff can securely update items and pricing on the fly.
