Happiness is a violin-playing goat!
At first glance, the art of Marc Chagall may seem a bit out there, surreal, even otherworldly. That’s basically how I felt, until a doorway opened for me upon listening to a short exchange in the well-known movie, “Notting Hill”. Whilst discussing Chagall’s painting “La Mariée”:
William (Hugh Grant) comments: “With a goat playing the violin.”
Anna Scott (Julia Roberts) replies: “Yes – happiness isn’t happiness without a violin-playing goat.”
“La Mariée” provides an example of a triumphant visual portrayal of emotion. What might a visual representation of happiness possibly look like? How could it be made to appear in visual art? For some, its form might be this beguiling and unforgettable work.
Marrying figure with the purest colour, movement and rhythm, Chagall’s unique vision inspires and moves. He returned a powerful figurative motif to contemporary art: dreaming, remembering, relating- Chagall’s instinctive approach to his subjects transports us into his world. We respond intuitively to visual cues such as colour, value and texture and these unforgettable images convey more than form, they have depth of feeling. For me, Chagall’s paintings are as good a representation of joy and happiness as anything possibly can be.
Art is that marvelous vehicle which often conveys us to a place where we can reconnect with our own happiness – and when we do, others invariably share it’s effect.

Happiness isn’t happiness without a violin playing goat.
I was reminded of Chagall as I watched, yet again, Notting Hill this afternoon. Art is so often fascinating, in the way that books and poetry can be. How one person perceives it may be completely different to another persons way. But let me give three of the possibilities in understanding which come to my mind when I look upon Chagall’s work.
Maybe the artist is conveying that happiness is an impossibility, that it doesn’t exist.
Maybe he is mocking people’s views of the world. Maybe what he really means is that we need to stop clinging onto impossible thoughts, and to learn to live with what we have. To stop waiting for violin playing goats and open our eyes to all the beauty that does exist. To learn to live with the many gifts we do have in this world. And to be happy. To love them, to be content with the world in which we live. Because if we spend our life waiting, we can never truly be happy. Maybe what we really need to do is see what does exist, and the love and happiness which we can find around us, without upsetting ourselves with the non-existence of things not yet of this world. Maybe they will come before we pass, maybe they won’t. Maybe they are heavenly hopes which we must wait to find. And so perhaps what Chagall is really saying is, love and happiness are all around you… stop hurting yourself with fantasies.
But maybe that’s not right either. Perhaps Chagall is really saying that love is impossible. Not in a non-existent way, but rather in the sense that no-one can ever truly understand it. Rather then, that anything is possible with love. Love is complicated. Love comes in so many forms. And many people don’t experience love in the way that you do. Types of love and happiness may seem impossible to one person, but completely natural to another. Happiness and love are personal, and only one who knows themselves can percieve love in their own way. And yet love is that which brings and unites people together, even in differences, to join as one body, as brothers and sisters. Maybe then what Chagall is really saying is, do not be afraid of love’s endless possibilities. Embrace it. Love is something that every now and then makes you stop for a moment. You look at your life, and you ask yourself… is this Real? Is this love and happiness Real? It coats you, fills you with a blissful, blessed sensation like no other, and causes you to ask yourself if you are dreaming, for life is so beautiful in these moments it is like living in another world. Living in the clouds, filled with heavenly joy, standing next to the musical goats.
As Julia Roberts says, it feels like how love should be. Floating through a dark blue sky. And maybe the sentence happiness isn’t happiness without a violin-playing goat, is simply a way of saying, love doesn’t make any sense a lot of the time. And yet it fills every happy moment, every true ‘presence’, every moment of expressive living.
So live in love, and live in happiness. Not in the way that people tell you to, not how society’s social rules tell you to. Don’t conform, but rather live in the way that you feel is right. Listen to your heart. Be open – Ephathatha. And be happy.

Marc Chagall, the Russian-born French artist, is recognized as one of the most noteworthy artists of the twentieth century. His work treats life with a streak of absurdity and fantasy that goes deep beyond the unconsciousness.
Born July 7, 1887, in Belarus, Chagall studied art in Saint Petersburg. From 1910 to 1914 Chagall moved to Paris to continue his studies. After the Russian Revolution, Chagall was appointed Director of the Moscow Jewish State Theater. Chagall painted several murals and created the scenery for numerous productions. In 1923, Chagall moved to France, where he spent the rest of his life, except for a period of exile in New York from 1941 to 1948. He died in France in 1985.
Chagall was heavily influenced by French Cubism, and his distinctive use of color and form is derived partly from Russian expressionism. Perfecting his work early, as in Lovers with Half Moon, he later developed subtle nuances. Many of Chagall’s famous paintings represent memories of Characteristic Russian-Jewish village scenes, as in The Wedding Candles, and occurrences from his private life, as in the The Cow with The Parasol, in addition to Russian-Jewish symbolism, his works combine childhood memories with Russian-Jewish folklore and fantasy.
Although his works abound with reflection, he neglected to portray the turmoil which he experienced. He communicates to those who view his works with happiness and optimism by means of vivid colors and peculiar scenes. After all, “happiness isn’t happiness without a violin-playing goat,” said Anna Scott played by Julia Roberts in reference to a Chagall oil painting (taken from the movie “Notting Hill”…).
Biblical themes characterize a series of etchings done between 1925 and 1939, illustrations from the Old Testament. In 1973 National Museum of the Marc Chagall Biblical Message was opened in Nice, France, to house hundreds of his biblical masterpieces.
Chagall involved himself in large-scale projects involving public spaces and important civic and religious buildings. One of the more famous murals can be found in New York at the United Nations Headquarters. The UN commemorated this work of art with a postage stamp.

Ready for a little stroll down Notting Hill memory lane? Julia Roberts’ Anna is a movie star trying to find a little normalcy in her life, and Hugh Grant’s William owns a bookstore far, far away from the Hollywood lifestyle. That’s a clear cut situation for a perfect rom-com.
Obviously they fall madly in love, over the course of many ups and downs, and the movie ends with them happily together. But did you happen to notice the couple’s wedding cake? Buzzfeed did and now they’ve totally made us love the move even more.
Early in the movie, while trying to hide out from the paparazzi, Anna ends up in Will’s apartment, where she notices a poster he’s got of Chagall’s “La Mariée.” The two have a quick throw-away discussion about the painting, with Anna noting that it perfectly describes how “how love should be, floating through a dark blue sky.” Will is then quick to respond, “With a goat. Playing the violin.” To which Anna then quips, “happiness isn’t happiness without a violin-playing goat.”
It’s a cute little moment where the two of them bond over something together. Later on, the painting comes back, when Anna buys Will the actual Chagall original, because they’re in luv. They’re so in luv, that when it comes time for the two to marry, their wedding cake is actually Chagall-themed.
Do you see that?? Not only is that a top-notch delicious looking wedding cake, but that most certainly appears to be a white chocolate goat with a violin. If that’s not happiness, I don’t know what is.
