Kardon A50K – History – metaruss
An integrated push-pull beam tetrode power amplifier.
The Harman/Kardon A50K was the kit version of the their A500 integrated amplifier. This one was originally built by my father-in-law, probably some time in the ’60s, and saw quite a bit of use. He gave it to me while cleaning his garage, where it had spent the prior 30 years or so. The chassis and transformers had some corrosion and was packed with bird seed (mice), but otherwise seemed to be in good condition.
I originally was going to salvage it for parts (HK had a reputation for making quality output transformers), but it appeared to be in reasonable condition, so I considered fixing it up instead. I discussed it with Jim McShane (of Harman/Kardon Citation restoration fame) and was encouraged to see if it worked. I connected the power supply to my bench supply and brought it up very slowly to attempt to reform the caps. One of the caps in the voltage doubler was drawing current and appeared to be unwilling to recover, so both of those were replaced and the amp was brought up on a variac (no tubes, of course). The results were encouraging, so I sprayed the switches and pots with DeoxIT, dropped the tubes back in and brought it back up on the variac. Everything seemed fine, so on went the test speakers and the tunes. It worked like a charm!
In the end I opted to restore it with a kit that Jim Mcshane can provide. It replaces all of the power supply resistors and caps, coupling caps, and the caps in the RIAA section. It also has replacement grid stopper and grid leak resistors for the output tubes. Some of the tubes were weak while others tested very strong. Initially I thought the 7355 output tubes were tired, so I got a set of Sovtek 7591XYZ tubes. These can be substituted after a minor change to the socket wiring and seem to work fairly well. Note that a “normal” 7591 tube will not operate properly in this amp without further modifications, due to the strange relationship between the output tubes and the preamp heater supply. The “7591XYZ” is really a re-based Russian military 6P3S, which is closer 5881 than a 7591.
After the restoration was complete, testing revealed that the original 7335 output tubes were still strong. Apparently this is because of the rather modest operating conditions for these tubes. Two of the four Telefunken 12AX7 tubes still tested strong, so those are doing duty in the RIAA preamp section. The preamp and amp input tubes were replaced with Sovtek 12AX7LPS’s. The phase splitter is a 12AU7 that also tests OK (“made in Italy”, probably Philips).

Wow kward, very much a testimate of the quality build of those tubes. My friend who tested them has the Hickock tester with the punch cards, don’t recall the model number. One of the 12AX7’s tested at 28%, the rest were pretty close to that. I think you could pretty much stick a fork in them…… The stereo/mono blend is kinda’ cool but waht the heck does the ambiance control do?Nothing as far as I can tell.

All stock under-the-hood (no mods except to set bias with 120v wall voltage- one resistor change- I also will include the stock resistor with the unit)- restored with all new caps (electrolytics and coupling caps). I forgot to take a shot of the internals before I put the bottom cover back on- but this was a pretty neat/tidy build (and I cleaned it up a bit more- so it’s really tidy inside now).

It has a set of testing-nearly-new old-stock GE 7355 output tubes, RCA gray-plate 12AX7 tubes in the phono stage, new Sovtek 12AX7s in the line stage, and an RCA 12AU7 as phase inverter.

Knobs were replaced (originals were missing/bad shape) with new machined aluminum set-screw knobs. Original knurled knob shafts were sleeved/bonded with thin-wall tubing, to allow new solid-shaft knobs to be installed. Tube shields were also refinished (black lacquer). All other finish original. Lettering on front panel in very good shape.

Chassis itself in decent condition- some minor pitting and rust spots, but nothing bad. All jacks and lettering on rear panel in good condition.

All controls cleaned, and all functions tested- unit works fine, and sounds EXTREMELY good. Phono stage is pretty quiet (very little noise), good dynamics, good tonal balance.
Selling for $500.00 plus shipping. I do not have Paypal, BTW- I usually work with USPS postal money orders for payment. Sorry, no international shipping.
This unit is also for sale locally; that may affect whether it is already sold or not, when inquiries are made here. I will sell to whomever commits first, whether here or locally.

Just so everyone knows- these HK amps are a kind of specialty for me. I’ve restored a number of these for myself, and for other people- and universally, pretty much, every owner has just shaken their head, regarding how GOOD these things sound, when they’re sorted out right. The phono stage is second to none for anything from this era, IMHO. The unit overall is quiet/ noise-free, pretty much, and easy to use (very usable tone controls, in contrast to many). They look good, and are built like tanks.
I’ve owned the little brother to this amp (the A300) for more than a decade, in my main system at home. I wouldn’t give it up for anything. In fact, if it wasn’t for that one, and another A50K that I own, I’d never have offered this one up for sale.
I’ve even built clone of this circuit design- and it’s amazing how GOOD this circuit can sound, even with a “mish-mash” of different parts from different sources. It’s just a plainly good design.

This is the only time I’m going to reduce the price. If I don’t sell it for this, I will simply just keep it and enjoy it myself. I certainly wouldn’t mind swapping this in for my A300 every once in a while…
PS: I know you can find one of these for a lower price elsewhere. Ask yourself what you’re getting for your money, though. This one has literally every cap replaced underneath (with caps that are pretty much across-the-board better than original spec, to boot), has everything sorted out for working with current-day power line voltages (bias circuit, etc), has known testing-as-new tubes, and a set of better-than-new knobs, along with everything that could be cleaned and restored, having been cleaned and restored… it’s not a “shelf queen”- it’s ready to be used every day. And it has one of the nicest faceplates you’ll ever see on one of these, to boot…
