“2019 UCI Worlds Harrogate Circuit” Route Details (Yorkshire)

Route Description

Route profile by ZwiftHub – the place to plan and track your route achievements!

Roll through the start/finish banner in Harrogate, then turn right to head up Otley Road, the longest section of straight road on the Yorkshire course. As you make your way out of Harrogate proper you’ll find yourself in the farm lands. Look for sheep, cows, and a friendly farmer on his tractor.

The Yorkshire KOM begins when you hit the stone bridge and turn a sharp left. The stream crossed here is called Oak Beck (“Beck” is used often in Yorkshire for a small river or stream). In real life, this bridge is narrow and crossing-controlled by traffic lights to be one way. But we Zwifters get to roll on through.

Crossing Oak Beck

Hit that KOM, enjoy your descent, then turn a sharp left past the Royal Pumproom onto Millionaire’s Row. You’re now on Cornwall Road, in the Duchy Estate–one of the poshest places in all of England to live.

Your next right takes you onto the forward sprint, a short but punchy effort which is mostly uphill until the final few meters. Finish that sprint, enjoy your descent, and wrap up your loop of the Duchy Estate. (Note: the sprint is so short that Strava will not let us create a segment.)

The Royal Pumproom

You will pass the Royal Pumproom again (this time on your right). In the 18th and 19th centuries, Harrogate made its fortune by drawing often wealthy people to come and take its waters, which had a supposedly curative effect. Known locally as “The Pump Rooms”, this is one location where these waters emerged from the ground.

As you turn the last right before the finish, note the Zwift Draft House on your left. This is the Cold Bath Brewery where Zwift is setting up shop and giving away its own custom brews during 2019 Worlds Week.

Almost there! The straightaway to the finish is uphill, so if you’re racing be ready for an especially challenging effort in these final meters. You will pass “Scotty’s” on the left, which in real life is Betty’s Tearooms, a huge local landmark.

This final sprint is where Mark Cavendish famously crashed out of the 2014 Tour de France. Happily, Zwifters don’t need to worry about such dangers, but you can certainly appreciate the massive effort put forth in this final drag to the finish.

Special thanks to Simon Schofield from the Zwiftcast for helping us put together these route notes. Simon is a Yorkshireman who has ridden these roads hundreds of times, so his local knowledge proved invaluable to us and to Zwift, who used his input to create and name Yorkshire’s routes.

There is a reverse version of this route, but it is event-only and thus only used for official events.

Race Recon: Yorkshire’s 2019 UCI Worlds Harrogate Circuit

Our Yorkshire map’s “2019 UCI Worlds Harrogate Circuit” route is a re-creation of the very roads raced by the world’s top riders in the 2019 UCI World Road Championships. Riders completed a long lead-in section followed by multiple laps of this circuit, culminating in a final uphill finish in central Harrogate. During race week, heavy rains made the constantly-undulating roads even more punishing. Fortunately, Zwifters can stay dry as they race this course from the comfort of their own homes!

Remember these top tips for Zwift racing (most apply outside as well!)

Warm up because the start is a hard effort Use the draft to conserve energy whenever possible Attack every punchy climb to avoid being dropped Know the route so you can pace yourself, move to the front before important climbs, etc Save a useful powerup for the finish

What follows is a detailed look at key sections of this route with racing tips from an experienced Zwifter. Simon Schofield, creator of the Zwiftcast, is a Yorkshireman who grew up riding these very roads. He’s generously shared useful tips for top results when racing the Harrogate Circuit.

Length: 8.6miles // 13.8km

Elevation Gain: 803′ // 245m

#1: The Start

Take a moment to enjoy the scenery and architecture as your race begins.

Simon says, “This is a flat roll-out until the turn at the roundabout/traffic circle, along a section of road called West Park. It’s a perfect start to get the legs spinning and the cadence up, with lots of pretty scenery because the Stray, a beautiful park, is on your right and some classic Harrogate architecture on your left. It’s Harrogate– and this circuit–at its most genteel!”

Our first climb begins quickly at the sharp right turn, so make sure you’re warmed up before the race begins!

#2: Otley Road Climb

1 mile // 1.7km, 4% average gradient

Expect the effort level to rachet up as soon as this steady, straight climb begins. “It’s ramrod straight so surprise attacks are probably not going to happen here–there’s nowhere to hide,” says Simon. “The gradient is also shallow, so not much scope to test fellow racers’ legs.”

Looking to get away with a small group or even solo? The final 200 meters of this climb, with the water tower on your right, may be the place to do it. As Simon explains, “It steepens and as you crest the hill, a very optimistic long-range attack could be launched with enough momentum to sustain it as the road starts to descend. It would be optimistic though!”

#3: Pot Bank Descent

0.4 miles // 0.7km, 16% max gradient

The Pot Bank is one of the most steep and twisty descents in all of Zwift. As such, it’s “One of the very few places on the whole course where a breather can be taken,” says Simon. “Steep enough for the supertuck to kick in and, with vigilance, this could be a good place to relax for a moment or two. But beware the climb up Pot Bank!”

#4: Climb Up Pot Bank

0.8 miles // 1.3km, 4% average gradient

The climb immediately following our Pot Bank rollercoaster descent can really make things interesting in a race. “This immediately follows the descent and it rears up good, followed by a longer more shallow section,” explains Simon. “So a really good hard kick up the short, steep pitch followed by a sustained power climb could see a gap open here. This is used IRL for circuit racing and is a notorious spot for attacks.”

Gaps can also quickly be closed here with smart riding. Coming in hot from the Pot Bank descent and looking to catch a group 5, 10, 20 seconds up the road? Hammer up the first little climb, perhaps deploying a feather powerup to keep your speed as high as possible.

#5: Forward KOM (Up Cornwall Road)

0.7 miles //1.2km, 5.5% average gradient

This is the only timed KOM on the Yorkshire map, and it’s where the race’s biggest attacks usually happen.

“In real life, this is overhung by trees and it’s almost always damp and dank. It’s pretty steep and twisty as it develops… and it goes on for longer than you think,” says Simon. “Truly a testing little climb and as it happens relatively close to the finish this is an anvil on which fellow racers can be hammered. The section up Cornwall Road is draggy and difficult after a hard effort lower down the climb.”

#6: Sprint segment

200 meters, slightly uphill

“Set amongst some of the most exclusive parts of residential Harrogate, this is comfortable on the eyes, but not on the legs. Flat or near flat, the turn on the sprint may fool a few,” says Simon.

If your race includes a sprint competition, you will want to start hammering well before the sharp right where the sprint begins. No sprint points on the line? Surf those wheels and conserve for the finish.

#7: Finish

500 meters, 2% finishing gradient

“Arguably the most testing section of a testing circuit, the finish up Parliament Street is a killer,” says Simon. “With legs already burning from earlier hard sections, it is absolutely essential to save something for this if you have any ambition of getting into the top order of finishers. Even after the slope relents, it’s not over. The final couple of hundred meters are a drag to the finish, the road still going up and the legs burning.”

If you’ve saved a feather powerup, use it as you make the sharp right, since this is the steepest portion of the finish. Feeling strong? A long attack here may open up a gap that won’t be closed, if you can sustain the watts per kilo to the end. Or try a shorter attack by popping an aero powerup after the steep section ends, hitting top speed in the final seconds.

We hope you’ve enjoyed this Race Recon. The goal of this series is to explain the features that make each Zwift route uniquely challenging for racers. Looking for more? See our complete list of Zwift Race Recons.

The 2019 UCI Road World Championships was the 92nd edition of the UCI Road World Championships, the annual world championships for road bicycle racing. It took place between 22 and 29 September 2019 in the historic county of Yorkshire, United Kingdom, the fourth to be held in the United Kingdom. The championships are traditionally hosted by a single town or city but, while each event in 2019 finished in the North Yorkshire town of Harrogate, the whole historic county of Yorkshire was the official host. Heavy rainfall caused some of the events to be re-routed and delayed.

Men and women were split into the categories of elite, under-23 (only men) and junior, competing individually in the two traditional road race and time trial disciplines of road bicycle racing. The 2019 championships saw the introduction of the mixed team relay, a team time trial which was raced together by the elite men and women. Mads Pedersen of Denmark won the men’s elite road race and Annemiek van Vleuten of the Netherlands won the women’s elite road race. The elite time trial titles were taken by Australian Rohan Dennis and American Chloé Dygert Owen.

Race locations [ edit ] [1] Starting point for the junior women’s and under-23 men’s road races in Doncaster

In July 2017, it was announced that Harrogate would host two circuit races and the other races were to start in locations across the historic county of Yorkshire, including Beverley, Doncaster, Leeds, Northallerton, Ripon and York.[2]

At the 2018 UCI Road World Championships in September 2018, further details for the championships were announced.[3] Harrogate would host the finishes for all eleven races during the eight days of racing,[4] including the new-for-2019 mixed team time trial relay; three of these races will be contested entirely within a circuit of 14 kilometres (8.7 miles) in and around Harrogate. Ripon was announced to hold the start of two time trials, while the men’s time trial will start in Northallerton.[5] For the road races, Richmond was announced as the start location for the men’s junior road race, while Doncaster would hold the start for the two remaining age-group races.[5] The elite races were announced to be starting in Bradford (women) and Leeds (men) respectively.[3]

The men’s and women’s elite road races followed separate routes before entering a 14 km (9 mi) circuit in and around the town of Harrogate. The men’s elite road race integrated the route from stage one of the 2014 Tour de France for the first 185 kilometres (115 miles) before completing seven laps of the final circuit, for a total distance of 284.5 kilometres (176.8 miles).[6] However, heavy rainfall necessitated last minute changes to the route of the men’s elite road race, shortening the route to 260.7 kilometres (162.0 miles).[7]

Schedule [ edit ]

All times listed below were for the local time – British Summer Time or UTC+01:00.

Race summaries [ edit ]

Elite men’s road race [ edit ]

Mads Pedersen surprised in the men’s road race by becoming the first Danish world champion in the event after winning the sprint in a three-man breakaway.[23] Italy’s Matteo Trentin started the sprint but took silver while Stefan Küng of Switzerland took bronze.[24] One of the favourites, Mathieu van der Poel of the Netherlands, had also been in the breakaway but could not follow it on the last lap and finished over ten minutes behind. The day was marred by atrocious, torrential, downpours and bitterly cold, windy weather. This left four men where Italy’s Gianni Moscon later lost contact; he finished in fourth place but was unable to help his teammate Trentin. Three-time champion Peter Sagan of Slovakia made a late breakaway from a larger chase group but could not catch the leaders and came fifth, followed by Michael Valgren of Denmark.[25]

Elite women’s road race [ edit ]

Dutch cyclist Annemiek van Vleuten won the race, after a solo breakaway for more than 100 km (62 mi). Defending champion Anna van der Breggen, also of the Netherlands, finished as runner-up, with Australian cyclist Amanda Spratt finishing in third.[26][27]

Elite time trials [ edit ]

The men’s time trial was 54 km (34 mi). Defending champion Rohan Dennis of Australia won by more than a minute. The silver went to the 19-year-old Belgian Remco Evenepoel who skipped the under-23 event after winning both the road race and time trial for juniors in 2018. Italy’s Filippo Ganna rounded out the podium.[28]

The women’s time trial was 30.3 km (18.8 mi). The American Chloé Dygert Owen won by 1 minute 32 seconds, the largest margin ever in a world championship time trial. Anna van der Breggen took silver. Two-time defending champion Annemiek van Vleuten, had to settle with bronze. Four days later she won the road race after riding solo for more than three times as long.[29]

The new mixed team time trial relay was 27.6 km (17.1 mi) in total, one lap for three men and one for three women. The inaugural event was won by one of the favourites, the Dutch team, with the female trio of Lucinda Brand, Riejanne Markus, Amy Pieters, and the male triumvirate Koen Bouwman, Bauke Mollema and Jos van Emden. Germany and the host Great Britain took silver and bronze, 23 seconds and 51 seconds behind.[30]

Under-23 events [ edit ]

The start of the men’s under-23 road race in Doncaster

As usual, there were only under-23 events for men. In the road race, Nils Eekhoff of the Netherlands won the sprint in a seven-man group but was later disqualified for drafting behind his team car for too long after a crash. The gold then went to Italy’s Samuele Battistella. Stefan Bissegger of Switzerland was elevated to silver and Tom Pidcock got into the podium with a bronze for the British hosts.[31]

The Danish favourite Mikkel Bjerg won his third consecutive gold in the under-23 time trial. The Americans Ian Garrison and Brandon McNulty took silver and bronze one second apart, but 27 seconds behind Bjerg who started as the last rider.[32]

Junior events [ edit ]

Both junior road races were won by Americans. Quinn Simmons finished solo in the men’s race[33] while Megan Jastrab won a sprint for women.[34] The victories contributed to the United States winning the most golds in the 2019 championships, three in total.

Antonio Tiberi of Italy won the junior time trial for men by 8 seconds.[35] Russia’s Aigul Gareeva won for women by four seconds.[36]
